Fine in fine dustwrapper, with applied label with early reviews of the book. Hamoum was born Hadidje Zennour, the granddaughter a Circassian mother and French nobleman who settled in Constantinople. While Western educated and a member of elite society, she was forced to live a life of veiled restriction in Turkey. Seeking a way to improve her situation she reached out to French author Pierre Loti, who made her (and her sister) the subject of his final novel Les Desenchantees, a tragic romance that exposed the difficult life of Turkish woman. Following the book's publication she and her sister left Turkey for Europe where she penned this travelogue of her experiences presented in a series of letters edited by British journalist Grace Ellison.       London: Macmillan & Co., Limited,. 1913. Octavo, pp. [1-8] 1-506 [507-508: ads] + undated 8-page publisher's catalogue inserted at rear,. original decorated olive-green cloth, front panel stamped in gold and black, spine panel stamped in gold.. Binding lightly rubbed at head and tail of spine panel and corner. tips, inner hinges tender with several hairline cracks, a near fine,. bright copy. A wonderful association copy. (#71689). First edition. Presentation copy with contemporary signed inscription by Blackwood to the children of English writer Hilaire Belloc (1870-1953) on front free endpaper: "To the Fairy Children / at Kingsland / from Algernon Blackwood." Belloc and Blackwood were close friends and Blackwood was a frequent visitor at Belloc's retreat at Kingsland in Sussex. The "aspect of writing for children increasingly fascinated Blackwood, especially as he was finding himself more immediately surrounded by them. There was his own nephew, Patrick, the son of his elder brother ... Baron de Knoop had children by an earlier marriage and, during the years of the First World War, Baroness de Knoop looked after three Polish orphans. Blackwood also frequently entertained the Belloc children, especially after the death of Hilaire's wife Elodie in February 1914. To all of these Blackwood became 'Uncle Paul,' and he delighted in having the fun of the children without the responsibility. Blackwood was of the opinion that children, like animals, had not lost their instinctive closeness to Nature or their innocence, both of which became dulled by civilization and overbearing adults. Children adored Blackwood because he behaved and saw the world like them -- the world of wonder in a daisy, a cloud or a butterfly. With A PRISONER IN FAIRYLAND Blackwood ... showed signs that he was losing control of his subject matter, swamping the spirit of his theme with prolixity and a surfeit of sentiment. That view, though, was not shared by all of the critics or readers of the day. A PRISONER IN FAIRYLAND went through a rapid succession of reprintings and was one of the most popular of his novels." - Ashley, Algernon Blackwood: A Bio-Bibliography, pp. 18- 19. Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 183. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy Volume II, p. 22. Bleiler (1978), p. 25. Reginald 01397. Ashley A.10.1.

        Captain Scott's Last Journey

ca. 1913.. Unrecorded lithograph by Archibald Bertram Webb, (1887–1944), illustrating one of the iconic moments in exploration history, illustrating the trek of Captain Scott, Edward Wilson and Birdie Bowers on their return from the South Pole, having failed to beat Roald Amundsen to the Pole. Evans & Oates had already perished - these three were soon to join them. The tragedy captured the hearts and minds of the British Commonwealth. Archibald Bertram Webb (1887-1944), artist, was born on 4 March 1887 at Kennington, Kent, England. He studied at the St. Martin's School of Art and at the City and Guilds of London Art School."He was a freelance illustrator and commercial artist in 1905-14 for such periodicals as the Critic, of which his father was editor, the Pall Mall Magazine, Photography and Focus, John Bull and Sketch."[ADB]. We believe that this large scale print was issued in about 1913. It is akin to the limited reproduction of the 1913 painting by J.C. Dollman, printed by Orman of Nottingham about 1913, illustrating Lt. Oates leaning into the wind. It is possible that the image was used in a magazine, and perhaps as some special large-scale edition, perhaps for "The Critic" magazine. Opportunities for commercial artists abounded at this time as the magazines and newspapers of the period were heavily illustrated, and photographs were not used much before 1914. Our research into these magazines has shown one example of his illustration in the Jul-Dec 1912 volume of the Pall Mall Magazine, to illustrate a story "A Lighthouse Christmas" by Walter H. Holton. Webb's illustration for this story are signed "Arch Webb", in the same manner as this print. In later years, his signature was more often "A.B. Webb". Suffering from the effects of rheumatic fever, he emigrated with his wife to Western Australia, landing in Fremantle in May 1915. There he worked as a commercial artist, art teacher, etcher, lithographer, public servant, college teacher & water- colorist. His images were influenced by the style of Japanese woodcuts and Art Nouveau. Webb lived in Nedlands, close to the Swan River, which was a favorite subject for his work. He is a most sought-after artist in Western Australia. RARE:We have not seen this image of one of the most iconic moments in British Antarctic exploration in 35 years of dealing in this area. Not recorded on OCLC, Trove, The British Museum, The British Library, The Scott Polar Research Institute at Cambridge, no appearance at auction (either through ArtNet or AE), Renard's Antarctic Auction of 1994.Laid down on old board, lower margin trimmed around the caption. A little foxed with a dark discoloration in the left quadrant. Rather grandly matted in an old cream mat with gold filets around caption and the edge of the image. Image size approximately 21 1/2 x 13" in mat 30 x 19 3/4".

A photo album assembled after a trip to Mexico in 1913 which included touring the cities of Guadalupe, Mexico City, Xochimilco, Orizaba, Tuxpango, and Minatitlan. Beautifully composed and beautifully printed in a small leather bound album with cardstock pages and gilt edges and decorations, all in an attempt to commemorate a Mexican journey. The images depict boat rides with lounging women with parasols, marketplaces with locals, arresting landscapes of various cities, the gardens of Mexico City, a group shot of local women washing clothes in a river, and men mounted on horses playing polo.         Mary Cassatt arranges her first meeting with art critic Forbes Watson, who would become the leading interpreter of her art

"Important Autograph Letter Signed, ""Mary Cassatt,"" 2 pages, 4.5"" x 6"" on her personal mourning stationery. Mensil-Théribus, ""Saturday,"" [no date, but likely July 1913], to ""My Dear Mr. [Forbes] Watson,"" arranging a luncheon at her summer home, Mensil-Beaufrense. Expected mailing folds, extremely light toning, a hint of bleed-through from the verso, else very fine condition. Cassatt writes to arrange her first meeting with the art critic, then a reporter for the New York Evening Post, and writes in full: ""I have just sent you a wire, which you may not understand. I am fourty [sic] miles from Paris, and some distance form the main line - therefore it is better to come to luncheon. I haven[']t the table with me, but if you take the morning train for Chaumont en Vequin leaving the Gare St. Lazare after 10- you will reach Chamount before 12- the return train leaves between four and five. My car will meet you at Chaumont. Hoping to have the pleasure of meeting you and Mrs. Watson on Monday[.]"" Forbes Watston (1879-1960) was a prominent art critic and considered the foremost authority on the work of Mary Cassatt. He first met the artist while travelling in France in 1913. Watson wrote of their first meeting: ""She began to talk the instant that I alighted from the motor which she had sent to the station and the talk went on all that day....The real point of meeting her, even then, was than one couldn?t listen to her, pouring our her ardor and her understanding, without feeling his conviction in the importance of art to civilization intensified....She made you share her intense hatred of aesthetic prevarication and compromise."" (Quoted in Leonore Clark, Forbes Watson: Independent Revolutionary, 2001, p. 24). The two would become close friends, a relationship that would last until her death. Following Cassatt's passing in 1932, Watson's monograph, Mary Cassatt, was published by the Whitney Museum of American Art. "

        Family Great War Ephemera Album

      c. 1913-44. A Father and Son on the Western Front, Staff Colonel and Royal Flying Corps Ace. Folio (380 x 290 x 107 mm). Original dark red half morocco, light red calico cloth. Around 1,000 items pasted to album pages or loosely inserted. Including military orders and communiques, newspaper clippings, letters, programmes, photographs, photo postcards, original artworks, cartoon and original poems. Spine ends worn and chipped, boards scuffed and slightly soiled, cloth peeling away at extremities, contents lightly toned but otherwise clean. Overall in very good condition, considering its size and heft. This extensive collection of World War I ephemera contains a range of personal and official material relating to the war and the services of the Huskinson family, in particular Charles John Huskinson and his son, Patrick. The variety of material on display offers a remarkably diverse view of the experience of the Great War, and its affects on one particular family, as well as giving a valuable (and uncommonly comprehensive) insight into the printed material generally available to service members stationed in France. In 1889, Colonel C. J. Huskinson (1865-1932) was commissioned to the 4th Battalion of the Nottinghamshire and Derby Regiment (Sherwood Foresters). By 1913, he had become commanding officer of the 1/8th (TF) Battalion, commanding it as they concentrated at Newark in 1914. However, before the 1/8th could leave for France, C. J. was appointed Commandant on Lines of Communication and in March 1915 he was relocated to the British base at Étaples. He would remain at the camp in northern France until the armistice, fulfilling the role of commanding officer of the Permanent Base Battalion, the Employment Base Depot, and the Details Camp. The album is particularly rich in material concerning C. J.'s duties at Étaples and the workings of the base camp of the British Expeditionary Force. A map of the camp is accompanied by numerous photographs of, among other things, C. J.'s hut, funk-hole, mess, and colleagues. Also included are various camp orders, including ones issued by the camp commandant Brigadier-General Andrew Graham Thomson, and a typed roll of officers and commanders in the Étaples Military District. C. J.'s own report on a bombing raid on the camp in May 1917 is pasted in together with photographs of the damage and a thank-you note to a sister of the British Red Cross who helped evacuate the wounded. Apart from combat- and logistics-related material, the album shows other aspects of the war experience, including programs for concert parties, photographs of sports events and concert troupes, Christmas cards from various battalions, brigades, and divisions, and excellent caricatures of colleagues. There are also some pre-and post-war material relating to Newark and the 1/8th Sherwoods, such as the Annual Camps of the battalion, civic Diplomas of Honour from Newark to C. J. and Mrs. Huskinson, plans for erection of a 1/8th Sherwoods Memorial, and the warrant for C.J.'s OBE (together with a card and a photograph concerning his investiture at Buckingham Place). Major (later Air Commodore) Patrick Huskinson (1897-1966) was first commissioned to the Sherwood Foresters in 1915, but was almost immediately seconded to the Royal Flying Corps and gained his wings in December the same year. In 1916, he was awarded the Military Cross for descending to an altitude of 800 feet to bomb an enemy train and station. During this operation, "he was under continuous fire and his engine and machine were seriously damaged, but he succeeded in flying back at low altitude and safely landing within [British] lines" (London Gazette, 27 July 1916). A year later, he added a bar to the Military Cross by taking down nine enemy planes within six months, as well as supporting infantry attacks with machine gun strafes; Patrick ended the war commanding 70 Squadron with a total of twelve "kills". After the conclusion of the war, he remained with the Royal Air Force before being appointed Director of Armament Development in 1940. Despite being blinded in April 1941 due to an air raid during the Blitz, Patrick became President of the Air Armament Board in 1942. In this role, he headed the development of ever larger bombs, including the Blockbuster bombs and Barnes Wallis' Earthquake bombs; he became "Britain's Best Known Bomb Designer". Material relating to Patrick includes portraits of him in uniform, group photographs with officers of squadrons he served with, as well as several marvellous photographs of his plane and of him in aerial action over Andover. In 1917, Patrick was shot down over Ypres and the album includes photographs of the crash site together with newspaper clippings and a copy of a letter to his father describing the event. There are also original RFC communiques dated 13 and 20 March 1918 which mention his exploits, together with General Henry Rawlinson's Army Orders and his personal congratulations on Patrick adding a bar to his Military Cross. Apart from material relating specifically to the Huskinsons, there are several items regarding World War I in general, including Hague's Special Orders of the Day, aerial photos, several spreads of photo postcards depicting the devastation and destruction of modern combat, cartoons and prints, numerous poems, both taken from periodicals and typewritten (the tritely optimistic jingoism of the former contrasting brilliantly with the jovially cynical compositions in the latter - there is even a typewritten "Canteen version of Kipling's IF", which should probably be published); there are also a few newspaper articles regarding World War II.

Preface by Johann Burger. (Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana:2211) 2d edition. Henri Rinck was a French chess study composer, considered one of the most important early figures in the field. In 1900 he set up a factory in Badalona (Spain) and lived there with his family. Before the end of the Spanish civil war he had to leave Spain. He established himself in Marseille, but returned to Spain later. His first chess endgame studies appeared from 1902 in the Deutsche Schachzeitung.
