Old Chinatown with Text by Will Irwin

New York: Mitchell Kennerley, 1913. Second edition, enlarged. Illustrated with 91 photographs by Arnold Genthe, printed at the Plimpton Press; ix, [1], 208, [2] pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Original gilt-stamped black cloth, fraying to cloth at extremities, nick to spine; very good. Inscribed to Photo-engraver and Collector Edward Epstean An important work of documentary and ethnographic photography, " ... one of the first and most important examples of the candid-camera approach to documentary photography" (Parr/Badger I). INSCRIBED to Edward Epstean, "whose knowledge and patience are responsible for the excellent reproductions of my Chinatown pictures" and SIGNED ("Arnold Genthe, December 1912"). Epstean (1868-1945) was a pioneering photo-engraver and collector who assembled one of the greatest libraries on the history and science of photography. Though not formally credited in this book, it must be assumed by Genthe's inscription that Epstean was responsible for the book's stunning half-tone reproductions - so rich in tone and detail that they approach the quality of photogravures.

        Old Chinatown

1913. GENTHE, Arnold. Old Chinatown. With text by Will Irwin. 208 pp. 8vo., 235 x 156 mm, bound in original publisher's gilt-stamped black cloth. New York: Mitchell Kennerley, 1913.Second and Best Edition of Arnold Genthe's photographs of the old Chinatown of San Francisco, with over 70 plates showing daily life in Chinatown. "His work stands on the borderline between reportage and investigation... [In San Francisco] he fell under the spell of Chinatown and began documenting the exotic life and customs he found there. The people he stalked were unaware of a photographer's presence, for he used a very small hand camera and so obtained pictures straight from life. Inquisitive and fascinated, he overlooked no detail of the architectural setting, no gesture of workmen and shopkeepers, no characteristic attitude" (Jean-Luc Daval, Photography: History of an Art p. 113 with reproduction). An unusually fine copy, with just a hintof wear at the tip and tail of the spine. Photography in Nineteenth-Century America, p. 323.

        In Powder and Crinoline

London: Hodder and Stoughton,, [1913]. Old Fairy Tales Retold. Quarto. Original full green vellum, front cover and spine lettered and pictorially stamped in gilt, pictorial endpapers, top edge gilt, others uncut, green silk ties. With 26 tipped-in colour plates on grey paper. Ties loose, ends and corners lightly rubbed, some fading to spine and somewhat to rear board, a few small marks and scratches to covers, endpapers spotted and tanned but internally quite clean, still a very good copy, sound and attractive. Signed limited edition, one of 500 numbered copies signed by Kay Nielsen, this copy unnumbered, and from the library (with the illustrated bookplate, dated 1915) of the prolific English author Edward Frederick Benson (1867-1940). E. F. Benson is principally remembered for his six camp upper-class social comedy novels known as the Mapp & Lucia series (1920-39), though he wrote much else besides, including ghost stories and fantasy works for children. Benson wrote a number of titles for Hodder & Stoughton during the First World War, which may explain his ownership of a copy as a gift from the publishers (a theory borne out by this copy being unnumbered) - moreover, given his tastes, Benson would have thoroughly enjoyed Quiller-Couch's In Powder & Crinoline, illustrated with both high-camp wit and beautiful (if somewhat etiolated) delicacy by Kay Nielsen.

THE DISCOVERY OF ISOTOPES] ‘Some Further Applications of the Method of Positive Rays’

Royal Institution, London 1913 - SEPARATE PAMPHLET (AND TRUE FIRST) PUBLICATION OF THOMSON’S DISCOVERY OF ISOTOPES. On Friday, January 17th, 1913, Thomson delivered this lecture to the Royal Institution. The photographs of deflected neon ions shown in the lecture and published here revealed an anomoly, the explanation of which constituted the discovery of isotopes (elements with variant atomic masses). Thomson’s student F.W. Aston subsequently discovered the isotopes of many elements. The importance of this discovery was immense: the development of nuclear energy relied upon it, as did the radioactive dating of rocks and organic material. This scarce pamphlet is in pristine condition: the stitched binding is holding firm and all pages are clean and bright (it has no covers, as issued). One of the landmarks of Thomson’s career, and a turning-point in the history of physics. [Attributes: First Edition]

Both issues are in Good condition with toning, tears and each single sheet folded three times. The July 1st, 1910 issue has two photos of Jack London and carries his story and thoughts leading up to the championship match. This copy of The Abysmal Brute is in the "Variant binding...stamped in black and green", Ahearn, 054b. A prizefighting story likely inspired by the great Johnson-Jeffries boxing match (his June 27th, 1910 New York Herald article states "Fighter with the quality of the 'Abysmal brute' will win the great battle...") where London reported on the buildup to and championship fight between, Johnson and Jeffries for the Heavyweight Championship of the World in Reno, Nevada. Johnson was the first black man to win the coveted title and on this challenge, knocked Jefferies down three times in the fourteenth round before his corner threw in the towel. The outcome of the fight triggered race riots that evening - the Fourth of July - all across the United States. The 1936 film "Conflict" is an American film based on The Abysmal Brute, staring John Wayne. Ref. Johnson p. 319; Sisson & Martens p. 70; Woodbridge, 109, 1000 & 1004; Wikipedia.
