Due Cosmografie, una Egizia ed una Sinaitica, in Due Piatti di Bronzo Trovati a Nimrud [Translation: Two Cosmographies, an Egyptian and a Sinaiticus, in Two Plates of Bronze Found in Nimrud]. Roma [Rome]: Presso le Reale Societa Geografica, 1913. First Edition. Text in Italian. Octavo, 9.25 x 6 inches. Original wraps, 110 pages. Fold-out map of site intact. Some toning and foxing to pages. Wraps rubbed and scuffed. Spine worn with some tears and chips. Toning and wear to edges. Good condition. Book on archeology of Nimrud. In antiquity, the town was known by the name Kalhu [Calah in the Old Testament], but the Arabs called it Nimrud after Nimrod, the biblical mighty hunter. Ronald Vere Tooley, considered the effective founder of the modern antiquarian map trade, was born and raised in London. After serving in World War I where he was one of the few in his regiment to survive the Battle of Cambrai, he joined the London booksellers Francis Edwards Ltd where he produced catalogues of rare books and old maps throughout the 1920s. After an attempt at his own business in the 1930s, Tooley rejoined Francis Edwards following World War II. Tooley devoted much of his time to the history of cartography and was considered an authority on early maps and cartographers. He authored multiple books on the subject and founded the Map Collectors' Circle, which published a series of monographs on historical cartography from 1963-1975. The festschrift, My Head is a Map, compiled in 1973 for his 75th birthday by British Library Map Librarians Helen Wallis and Sarah Tyacke, celebrated his contributions to the world of antiquarian maps.         El mole rachmin (für Titanik) [ORIGINAL 78 RPM WITH TWO SILVER GELATIN PRINTS]

Victor Talking Machine Co., [1913], Camden, NJ - Size of frame: 17 6/8 x 23 2/8". Framed and matted 78 RPM and two silver gelatin prints pertaining to Josef "Yossele" Rosenblatt (1882-1933), a Ukrainian-born cantor and composer, who was regarded as the greatest cantor of his time. Indeed, Rosenblatt was known for his remarkable artistry, for the refinement of his timbre, and for his unique capability to shift from normal voice to falsetto, with its characteristic breathy flute-like sound relatively free of overtones. Notes were hit remarkably accurately at high speeds. Fiorituras, similarly, were executed near perfectly, both rhythmically and on pitch. His popularity soared so high that the great Arturo Toscanini approached him to sing the leading role in Jacques Fromental Halévy's "La Juive," but Rosenblatt replied that he would only use his vocal gift for the glory of God, in service to his religion. Similarily, and at about the same time, he was offered $1000 per night to sing at the Chicago opera house, but so great was his love for Yiddishkeit, that he turned it down. Rosenblatt corresponded with many of the great tenors of his day. It is said that upon hearing Rosenblatt sing "Elli Elli", Enrico Caruso was so moved that he climbed onto the stage and kissed him. In April 1912, when the Titanic sank and the first news came of the disaster, Cantor Yossele Rosenblatt felt such compassion for all those who had lost loved ones in the tragedy, that, raising his powerful voice in song, he recorded this "El mole rachmin* (für Titanic)" for Victor records. The record was released in the early months of 1913, and sales soared so high that Rosenblatt was able to collect over $150,000 in royalties, which was promptly and entirely donated to help the distressed families. At the time of this recording, Rosenblatt had just moved to Harlem to take a position at the Ohab Zedek orthodox congregation. Underneath the original 78 RPM (35312-B) are two 3 2/8 x 4 1/2" silver gelatin prints of Josef "Yossele" Rosenblatt. Frame, record and photographs in very good condition. * English translation: "Exalted, compassionate God, grant perfect peace in Your sheltering Presence, among the holy and the pure, to the souls of all our beloved who have gone to their eternal home. May their memory endure as inspiration for deeds of charity and goodness in our lives. May their souls thus be bound up in the bond of life. May they rest in peace. And let us say: Amen."         [Archive]: 18 Real Photo Postcards of the West Side Camping Club in Guard, Maryland

Guard, Maryland: West Side Camping Club. 1913-1914. 18 sepia-toned real photo postcards. Some modest fading to a few of the cards, a few have been mailed, overall near fine. A splendid group of photographs of a bunch of cheerful knuckleheads at a private hunting club in Guard, Maryland, where apparently, according to a 1914 Forest and Stream article, they specialized in hunting (and occasionally eating) groundhogs. The images feature about 20 prosperous but casually dressed white men in a tent encampment with a cook shed emblazoned with the letters W.S.C.C. and various semi-humorous signs, and manned by a black cook in white chef's outfit. In one image, one gentleman on the left pretends to play a frying pan like a banjo, while on the right another gentleman pretends to shave the neck of a sleeping man with a hand scythe, while the cook stands in the middle with knife and frying pan, looking not terribly amused. In other images the various men lounge around camp, and in a series of four images, a group of hunting dogs attack what appears to be a groundhog pelt. The few that are postmarked are postmarked in August of either 1913 or 1914, all from Guard, Maryland (about which we can find nothing!) .

Each plate accompanied by a guard sheet with descriptive letter-press. Printed by Henry Stone and Son, Ltd., Banbury, p. [164]. Eight of the colored plates are dated '1913'. - Contents / Inhalt : 1. Minon-Minette [nach de Caylus], 2. Felicia, or, The pot of pinks [nach d'Aulnoy], 3. The twelve dancing princesses [Andrew Lang], 4. Rosanie, or, The inconstant prince [n. de Caylus], 5. The man who never laughed [bearbeitet n. einer Version von William Morris], 6. John and the ghosts [Quiller-Couch], 7. The Czarina's violet [Francis Money-Coutts i.e. Lord Latimer]. The genius of the young artist who has illustrated this book may be left to speak for itself, as it assuredly will: but I would say a word about the title, which is also of his invention. When Messrs. Hodder and Stoughton told me that Mr. Kay Nielsen wished to employ his pencil upon a volume of Fairy Tales, to be called 'In Powder and Crinoline', I answered that the title and the notion it conveyed were, in my opinion, capital; that no-one with fourty-one volumes of the 'Cabinet des Fees' on his shelves [..] ought to find any difficulty with 'Powder' save the pleasant difficulty of choosing; but that if anyone knew where to find in the age of 'Crinoline' a stock of such tales as we wanted I sholud be obliged by the information. There was no doubt they ought to exist, but I doubted very much if they did. So, or nearly so, it turned out." (etc., Preface p. IX f.). Es folgt die launige doch informative Schilderung, wo und wie die in dem Buch versammelten Geschichten aufgespürt und gestaltet wurden. "It was a thousand pities [..]. [..] This confession tells, all too plainly, that I have taken my good things [..] where I happened to find them: but the following pages may suggest to some young writer of Genius that there is not only a crying need for Fairy Tales of the Crinoline period but an Artist waiting for him to rise up and supply it." (p. XII). (Benezit). -- NETTOGEWICHT / NET WEIGHT 2.5 kg
