        [Photo album]: 1913 Harley-Davidson Cross-Country Trek

A wonderful group of 49 captioned photographs documenting the Chicago-to-New York trip of two young men traveling by Harley-Davidson Motorcycles during the summer of 1913. Rebound in full leather over flexible boards with tipped in 4.25" x 2.75" photographs on each right-hand page and a caption on the facing page, with custom cloth slipcase. Fine with the photographs still fresh. The album was assembled by Max Stuhlfaut of Chicago who traveled with a neighborhood friend, Norman Back, from Chicago, through Ohio and New York, into Canada, stopping at Niagara Falls, before heading on to New York City and Norwich, Connecticut. Along the way the two friends photographed themselves by various sign posts, bridges, rivers, Harley-Davidson dealerships (Anderson Cycle Works in Erie, Pennsylvania and Albany Motorcycle Co. in New York), along with the New York Skyline (including the Brooklyn Bridge and the Woolworth Building), Rockaway Beach, Ellis Island Ferry, the Ocean Liner Olympic, and finally with friends at a farm near Norwich, Connecticut. The images are nicely composed by Stuhlfaust, a professional engraver and photographer, who has beautifully captioned each photograph on the facing page. Notable images include 17 snaps of the pair with their motorcycles on the road and in front of the Harley-Davidson dealerships, as well as images of the men posed by the Falls, by bucolic rural scenes, at the beach, and on the farm. A remarkably well preserved photographic account of an early motorcycle road trip across the dusty roads of America. .

Boston: L. C. Page, 1913. Mulford, Stockton. Octavo. (x), 310, (viii), (8)pp. First edition. Frontispiece and seven halftone illustrations by Stockton Mulford. This is the book that introduced the character whose name has become synonymous with sunny optimism. The eponymous heroine of Porter's best-known novel insisted on "finding something in every situation to be glad about" (Grolier, p. 220). The book was an immediate bestseller and was quickly followed by a sequel. Over the years, Pollyanna was featured in calendars, board games, and a 1920 movie starring Mary Pickford. In publisher's gilt-stamped green watered cloth. Spine a trifle darkened, else an unusually fine, bright copy of this uncommon first edition. Housed in a cloth chemise and morocco-backed slipcase. (Blanck, p. 131; Grolier 100 in Children's Literature 65).

        In Queer Street.

London: F.V. White and Co., 1913., 1913. Inscribed First Edition. Octavo, pp.312. Bound in publisher's red cloth, with gilt titles to upper, gilt titles and publisher's imprint to spine, bottom edge uncut. Quite clean inside, inscribed by the author "To Mrs Graham / with kind regards / Fergus Hume / Thundersley, Essex, 20th September 1913", with a little sporadic foxing primarily to margins. Binding shows well, spine a little sunned, corners and spine ends bumped, minor spotting to front edge of textblock, slight lean. According to a contemporary reviewer in the Western Mail (24th October 1913), Hume's "latest book, "In Queer Street", is much on a par with the rest of his work. It's principal merit lies in an ingenious plot, and a murder mystery which keeps the reader in a pleasing state of suspense down to the end of the volume. ... [A] sort of Montague and Capulet business," with a significant amount of murder in addition.

        Timon of Athens.

London, The Cube Press, , [1913]. Folio. 16 sheets, printed rectos only, unbound as issued in original laid cream paper portfolio, decorations to both wrappers by Lewis in black, brown linen ties. Lacking the blank leaf mentioned by Morrow & Lafourcarde and almost never present but with the original printed Lewis-designed envelope. Housed in a quarter black morocco solander box. 6 colour and 10 black and white plates. Envelope a little toned and with a couple of minor tears, some marginaly foxing to one of two plates, ties frayed. But a truly exceptional copy. First and Only Edition. The story of Lewis's first publication could stand as his epitaph. Commissioned in a somewhat casual way to make a number of illustrations for an edition of Shakespeare's least cheerful play, Lewis managed so to horrify the prospective publishers with this radical and challenging piece of work that they abandoned the project entirely. Lewis pressed on regardless and issued this text-free version. The Cube Press is thought to have been his own invention solely to expedite this, its only publication. The images are among his finest and seem perhaps inevitably to prefigure the war that was soon to come.

[AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] Edition on current paper, second emission copy with the right colophon of 8 November 1913, the misprint to Grasset on the title page and the lack of table. ÑConrad p.188, Spence 1056, Renard 1386, Taurus 77, Rosove 290.A1 The Journals of Captain Robert Falcon Scott, which comprise Volume I, are a detailed, concise and moving record of one of the great tragedies in the history of polar exploration conveyed in first person narrative supplemented with extensive photographs, drawings and diagrams. The last entry was made while Scott was dying in the midst of a storm during his return from the South Pole. Volume II contains the accounts of Wilson and Atkinson and several of the scientific reports generated during the expedition. Scott never returned from this expedition, dying on the ice with several of his party. He did manage to preserve his notes where others would find them, protected from the Antarctic winds by his own corpse, and in so doing left the world this vivid record of endurance and tragedy.         LA MAISON PASCAL. Roman fantaisiste.

Paris, Librairie Paul Ollendorff, s.d. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Art Deco dance poster - 1913.

ART DECO DANCE POSTER"Gertrud Leistikow Tanzspiele', lithographic poster designed by Emil Pirchan, published by Kunst im Druckin Munich, 1913. Size 122 x 90 cm.Gertrud Leistikow was born on 12 September 1885 in Bückeburg, Germany. She studied at the Academy of Applied Arts in Dresden and would later continue her training in Berlin.Leistikow began to dance between 1906 and 1910 and soon drew condiderable crowds in St. Petersburg, Moscow, Lausanne, Utrecht and Sarajevo. In the summer of 1914 Leistikow joined Rudolf von Laban"s troupe in Ascona, where she had a major role in Von Laban's dance drama Der Sieg des Opfers next to Mary Wigman. In that year she also performed in the Netherlands for the first time, where there was a lot of interest for her shows. An article on her appeared in Dutch art magazine Wendingen, and the appreciation she got may have played a role in her decision to settle in The Netherlands. In 1921 she married a rose grower from Aalsmeer.Leistikow often performed during these years, but also started focussing on teaching. She opened dance schools in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague. After the birth of her son in 1925, she spent most of her time teaching. On June 5, 1929 a (first) farewell evening was held in the Amsterdam Stadsschouwburg. There were several to follow. After she returned from a two-year stay in the Dutch East Indies, she opened another dance school at Amsterdam Stadhouderskade. Leistikow would countinue to teach there until her death in 1948.Leistikow"s dance was all about improvisation. The body had to follow the soul organically. According to contemporaries her strength was not her virtuoso technique, but the dramatic intensity of her performances. Initially, Leistikow had a preference for the tragic and melancholic, later she shifted to the grotesque. As accompanying music, she usually chose from the nineteenth-century Romantic repertoire and folk songs. Dutch dance critic Werumeus Buning was a great admirer of Leistikow. He characterized her dance as fluent, soft and musical, where "the beautiful floating life of her arms remains an everlasting memory'.Her poster "Gertrud Leistikow Tanzspiele' was designed by Austrian born artist Emil Pirchan (1884-1957). Pirchan was one of the most important designers of applied arts of the German-speaking world in the early 20th century. His designs for theater, opera and film, his numerous posters, illustrations and graphics were groundbreaking. Pirchan was recognized for excellence with the golden Fügermedaille and the Vienna Academy Master Award.Price: € 1.650,-.
