Typed letter signed to Austrian conductor, composer and musicologist [Dr.] Kurt List (1913-1970)

      - 1 page. Quarto, 278 x 215 mm. Dated Los Angeles, March 2, 1947. Carbon copy, with original autograph signature in ink. With Schoenberg's name and address handstamped to upper left corner. In English.Schoenberg responds to a letter from List with questions about music criticism. He discusses his current projects: the books Structural Functions of Harmony and [Fundamentals of] Musical Composition, and a volume of "texts" to be published in German. He accepts List's offer to have his Kol Nidre, op. 39, distributed by New Music, despite doubts that the publisher is capable of the necessary promotional work and gives some instructions involving Nathan Broder from Schirmer and Schoenberg's brother-in-law, Felix Greissle, then at Edward B. Marx Music Corporation, New York:"Problems of music criticism have become so remote to me in the past 14 years that I could answer your questions only in the most superficial manner and totally in the negative. I am so busy with finishing my two books. I ought . to mail the manuscripts for a volume of my 'Texts' to Germany, or rather to Vienna. I did not respond to your offer for my 'Kol Nidre' to be distributed on royalties by New Music. Frankly: I doubt that New Music can handle this successfully because it requires propagenda to get conductors to perform it like another cantata-which they also do not perform."In a postscript, Schoenberg regrets List did not publish his letter about Wilhelm Furtwängler "at the crucial time; he was a friend of mine and would have enjoyed it." Manuscript annotation in red crayon to lower left corner: "copy."Creased at folds; some minor stains from carbon; small tears to lower edge. The two books mentioned in the letter were both published posthumously: Structural Functions of Harmony in 1954, and Fundamentals of Musical Composition in 1967. The "other cantata" mentioned in the letter is possibly "Der neue Klassizismus" from Drei Satiren, op. 28. The reference to Furtwängler points to his denazification trial. Nathan Broder (1905-1967) was involved editorially with New York publishers G. Schirmer and W. W. Norton, and taught at Columbia University (1946-62). Felix Greissle (1894-1982) was a student of Schoenberg in Vienna. His sister Gertrud became Schoenberg's second wife.

CHANCE. A Tale in two parts. SIGNED BY CONRAD.

A very good copy in publishers green cloth binding with spine decorated and lettered in gilt, including the correct spelling of the publishers name at the bottom. Signed by Joseph Conrad on the front free endpaper, Dated 1923. The top of the signed leaf and the half title page have a small indentation where a paper clip has been used. Aside from some light rubbing to the extremities this is a very good tight copy, the gilt on the spine still strong and bright. An interesting copy, signed by the author and with part of the wrapper, of the less common 1913 Cancel title page issue. Copies with the true 1913 integral title are rare, it is thought that only about fifty survived, and most early copies were issued with cancel title pages dated 1914 - when the book was finally published. Loosely inserted is the front panel from the rare dustwrapper, showing a full colour illustration by J. Dewar Mills within a grey border. The whole panel dark blue with grey title and author.

Mother Goose. The Old Nursery Rhymes.

London: William Heinemann,, 1913. Octavo. Original blue pictorial cloth, titles to spine and front cover in blue and red, illustrated endpapers, top edge blue. With the dust jacket. Colour frontispiece and 12 colour plates with captioned tissue guards, black and white illustrations in the text, by Rackham. Light spotting to fore-edge, in the dust jacket with moderate spotting and soiling. An excellent copy. First trade edition, first impression. Unusually, the trade edition of Mother Goose is an entirely different setting of type from the deluxe, with a smaller type area and the illustrations mostly reduced in size. The colour plates are printed within a cream border directly on white paper rather than mounted, all except the Mother Goose illustration (also used for the front panel of the dust jacket), which has a black border and is the same size as the deluxe version. This copy conforms to Riall's description of the first of two trade bindings, except that here the top edge is blue, not green. Riall notes that later issues and editions have plain endpapers.

        Scott's Last Expedition

Inscribed by Kathleen Scott to E. A. Shipley: "E.A. Shipley with so many thanks for all your help, K. Scott, 1913". Both volumes are firmly bound in the original publishers dark blue cloth, lettered in gilt, the corners and spine ends are slightly bumped and rubbed, there are a few minor marks and some small tears to the cloth along the front hinge of vol I, the spines are a little faded. The text blocks are slightly foxed and age toned, there is a small amount of tape residue to the front pastedown of vol I. Both volumes have a later gift inscription to their respective front endpapers: "G. R. Shipley Stewart, Mother, Xmas 1927" and an additional note: "Ex Libris A. E. S.". The first account of this most famous of all Antarctic expeditions(at least in the U.K. where we love nothing quite so much as heroic failure), inscribed by Scott's wife, Kathleen, a noted sculptor, who created the statue of Captain Scott that stands in Waterloo Place. A superb association copy of the first edition, in much better condition than is typical for these substantial tomes.
