        Scott's Last Expedition

Inscribed by Kathleen Scott to E. A. Shipley: "E.A. Shipley with so many thanks for all your help, K. Scott, 1913". Both volumes are firmly bound in the original publishers dark blue cloth, lettered in gilt, the corners and spine ends are slightly bumped and rubbed, there are a few minor marks and some small tears to the cloth along the front hinge of vol I, the spines are a little faded. The text blocks are slightly foxed and age toned, there is a small amount of tape residue to the front pastedown of vol I. Both volumes have a later gift inscription to their respective front endpapers: "G. R. Shipley Stewart, Mother, Xmas 1927" and an additional note: "Ex Libris A. E. S.". The first account of this most famous of all Antarctic expeditions(at least in the U.K. where we love nothing quite so much as heroic failure), inscribed by Scott's wife, Kathleen, a noted sculptor, who created the statue of Captain Scott that stands in Waterloo Place. A superb association copy of the first edition, in much better condition than is typical for these substantial tomes.

Order of the Brilliant Star. Zanzibar and London, 1913.

1913. Insignia of the Third Class of the Order of the Brilliant Star, stored in custom-made red morocco case with gilt cover, lined in silk and purple felt (Elkington & Co., London). Includes: Letter of bestowal in Arabic. Form printed in gold and filled in in black ink (6 May 1913). Foreign Office letter announcing Royal permission to wear the decoration (T.D.S., 9 July 1913). Royal Warrant to accept and wear the insignia, signed by King George V and Reginald McKenna as Home Secretary (T.D.S., 21 July 1913). Additional material. The Insignia of the Third Class of the Order of the Brilliant Star as conferred upon the British diplomat Edward William Paget Thurstan (1880-1947). The Star was bestowed in the early days of the long reign of Khalifa bin Harub Al-Said of Zanzibar, who ruled from December 1911 to October 1960. The Arabic dynasty of the Al-Saids ruled Zanzibar until the revolution of 1964. Khalifa bin Harub (r. 1911-60), ninth Sultan of Zanzibar, was descended from Said ibn Sultan (1790-1856), the last of the dynasty whose empire included not only Muscat and Oman, but also Zanzibar, where he had established his capital in 1840. Upon Said's death his realm had been divided: his third son, Thuwaini, succeeded him as Sultan of Muscat and Oman; and his sixth son, Majid, became Sultan of the wealthier Zanzibar. Long an area in which the British Empire exerted paramount influence, Zanzibar became a British protectorate in 1890. - Includes a later T.D.S. from Buckingham Palace to Thurstan (now C.M.G.), forwarding a medal "to be worn in commemoration of Their Majesties' Silver Jubilee 6th May, 1935".

        Eigenh. Brief mit U. Wohl Berlin, 18. X. 1913.

1913. 1 S. 4to. Briefkopf.

"An den Knaben Elis". Typed manuscript signed and with autograph corrections. N. p., [April 1913].

1913. Approx. 340 x 208 mm. 1 p. The only known textual witness of Trakl's poem; first published in "Der Brenner" (vol. III, 1912/13, no. 15, 1 May 1913, p. 664), and afterwards published (with small departures) in "Gedichte" (Leipzig, Kurt Wolff, 1913) and "Sebastian im Traum" (ibid., 1915). It can be assumed that Trakl gave the poem to Ficker, who arranged for its publication and gave it to the German literary historian Walther Killy (1917-95) in appreciation for his work on the historical-critical edition of the "Dichtungen und Briefe" ("Poems and letters"). Subsequently, it was sold at Dörling, Hamburg, in 1995 (lot 161), entering a private collection. - Purple ribbon (somewhat weak at the beginning) on carbon paper; some foldings. Trakl's insertions in pencil and black ink; his signature in pencil; minor folds; lower margin slightly spotty. Georg Trakl. Dichtungen und Briefe. Historisch-kritische Ausgabe, ed. by Walther Killy and Hans Szklenar. Salzburg, Otto Müller Verlag, 1969 (2nd, revised edition 1987).

        DINGO (ex. de Sacha GUITRY)

1913Paris, Fasquelle, 1913. 255 x 163 mm, 422 pp. Demi-maroquin havane à coins à la Bradel, dos lisse, titre doré (Alfred Farez). EDITION ORIGINALE.

        In Queer Street.

London: F.V. White and Co., 1913. - Inscribed First Edition. Octavo, pp.312. Bound in publisher's red cloth, with gilt titles to upper, gilt titles and publisher's imprint to spine, bottom edge uncut. Quite clean inside, inscribed by the author "To Mrs Graham / with kind regards / Fergus Hume / Thundersley, Essex, 20th September 1913", with a little sporadic foxing primarily to margins. Binding shows well, spine a little sunned, corners and spine ends bumped, minor spotting to front edge of textblock, slight lean. According to a contemporary reviewer in the Western Mail (24th October 1913), Hume's "latest book, "In Queer Street", is much on a par with the rest of his work. It's principal merit lies in an ingenious plot, and a murder mystery which keeps the reader in a pleasing state of suspense down to the end of the volume. . [A] sort of Montague and Capulet business," with a significant amount of murder in addition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

THE CONQUEST ... BY A NEGRO PIONEER

The Woodruff Press,, 1913, Book Condition: Good overall in dark blue cloth with white lettering (lettering rubbed and illegible on the spine), some wrinkling to the cloth (binding flaw), scattered foxing. Uncommon., 2nd printing.. African-American filmmaker Oscar Micheaux's first book, a self-published novel with a very strong autobiographical influence: Micheaux was a Nebraskan farmer, who eventually lost his land as a victim of fraud. Later, realizing the growing importance of the moving picture industry, he wrote. produced and directed several films with all-black casts, and even financed the films himself. The second printing of this landmark book was just 2 weeks after the first, and is notable both as an early work by an African American who was a pioneer in many different ways, and for its early Nebraska imprint. Illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of the author and 15 photographic plates, mostly of scenes of ranching or farming in Nebraska (all plates are present, but 2 are inserted at different pages than indicated in the list of illustrations.) 2nd printing.

        Personae & Exultations

First combined edition; 12mo; original cloth boards. No more than 500 copies of this edition were issued. The first edition sheets of the two books with their original title leaves excised and new half titles and title leaf for the volume were inserted. 500 copies of the new titles were printed by the Chiswick Press. The rare occurrence of the composite volume in comparison with its separate components indicates that fewer than the intended number were actually issued. Gallup A3b. Very good, with some foxing to the edge of the text block and to some pages. A lovely copy.
