[SAN FRANCISCO: REAL ESTATE MAP].
San Francisco: Mason-McDuffie Company, General Agents, [circa 1912]. This is the smaller of two versions of this map; this one was most likely for pocket or portable use; the other larger version for display on a wall. OCLC records one copy of this version (CHS) and two of the larger version (Bancroft and UC Davis). Cadastral real estate map, 29.2 x 27.4 cm, gray and green color outlining. A rare real estate map of the residential neighborhood of St. Francis Wood in its infancy, across Portola Avenue from the West Portal neighborhood in San Francisco's Sunset District. San Francisco west of the Twin Peaks hills was mostly undeveloped by 1915, but a tunnel that would connect by train this remote part of the city with the neighborhoods closer to downtown was under construction, and developers knew that once that was completed, the areas west of Twin Peaks would be ripe for development. The San Francisco firm of Mason-McDuffie engaged the services of the Olmsted Brothers of Brookline, Mass, and famed California architect John Galen Howard to plan and design what would become one of San Francisco's most elegant residential neighborhoods. From the inception, all utility lines were to be underground, no apartment buildings were allowed, and there were restrictions on the architecture designed and quality of construction. Several other important Bay Area architects became involved, including Henry Gutterson, a protégé of Bernard Maybeck. A few pencil notations, probably by a realtor or planner; creased, with some minor wear; a little browning at the edges; in very good condition.

DARWIN, Bernard.
London: Burberrys, [1912]. Octavo. Original tan cloth-backed buff paper boards, titles to front boards in black. Imposing bookplate of Arvid Eriksson (1898-1976), Swedish army officer and director of the Gymnastiska Centralinstitutet in 1926. Only slight wear to extremities of spine. A particularly nice copy. 13 full-page illustrations, three silhouettes in the text, illustration of the "pivot sleeve" in text at p. 46. First and sole edition of Darwin's scarcest book, produced for marketing purposes by the London outfitters Burberrys. Darwin's "Hints" are as pertinent as ever, although in this publication they naturally include a special emphasis on the need for appropriate golfing attire. Wedekind, Frank and P. L. Fuhrmann, eds
Mnchen: Komet-Verlag, 1912. München: Komet-Verlag, 1912. 4to, 556, 224 pp, pagination continuous in both volumes, beautifully bound in thick green buckram with gilt titles and a gilt comet device to front panel, either a publisher's or custom binding, with all the original covers bound in. Profusely illustrated in both color and black and white. Text in German. An exceedingly rare complete run of this satirical art and literature periodical co-edited by Frank Wedekind, which included many of the artists who congretated around the Café Stefanie in Munich, including Albert Bloch, Marcel Duchamp's friend Lasc r Vorel, and Hanns Bolz . The Komet was remarkable for its championship of the rights of women, free sexual expression, and for the visual art throughout which mercilessly satirized Bourgeois complacency. In the editorial for the first issue, Wedekind stated that the aim of the satire in the publication was to be "die Erweiterung unserer Rechte... in erster Linie natürlich die Erweiterung der Frauenrechte." (the extension of our rights, and first and foremost, of course, the extension of the rights of women.) The periodical was also a platform for Wedekind's intense fights against the literary censorship by the German police at the time, after several of his groundbreaking plays, which often dealt with frank sexuality, were banned from performance in Imperial Germany. In an editorial to the fourth issue he states that the censors had helped German literature" weave it's own noose." [Stark, p. 73]. The periodical included work by the anarchist Erich Mühsam, the Rom … [Click Below for Full Description]

1912. A PERFECT STATE. AN EXCEPTIONAL PROVENANCE. A COPY WITHOUT EQUIVALENT. ABSOLUTELY PERFECT CONDITION. YEAR EXCEPTIONAL ORIGIN. YEAR UNPRECEDENTED COPY. Beautiful copy of this shirt in the collection "Modes and manners of today ' hui", the publication of the best of fashion at the beginning of the 20th century, by artists the having made, at the top of their art. The project is supported by Pierre Corrard, writer and editor of great talent. In order to support the revolution art and clothing of the roaring twenties, he published, in 1912, a first shirt, with illustrations of Georges Lepape. Before the reception to this first publication, he decides, each year, to propose a similar shirt, with authors and various artists. Stopped during the war, the publication in 1919, and it is again Georges Lepape who will dial illustrations showing his vision of the war years, on a text by Henry-Jacques. Hoover, 1912 #2709/3000
1912. Very rare collectors item! Agricola De Re Metallica, Translation by Hoover Mining Magazine, 1912 #2709/3000. Extremely rare authoritative reference on the science and techniques of mining. This version is in very clean condition, with intact spine. content and plates are clean and beautiful. Slight damage to covers, as shown in photos. Hand demarcated "02709" on the first page. Feel free to contact me for more, or specific photos. From Wikipedia: De re metallica (Latin for On the Nature of Metals [Minerals]) is a book cataloguing the state of the art of mining, refining, and smelting metals, published a year posthumously in 1556 due to a delay in preparing woodcuts for the text. The author was Georg Bauer, whose pen name was the Latinized Georgius Agricola. The book remained the authoritative text on mining for 180 years after its publication. It was also an important chemistry text for the period and is significant in the history of chemistry. In 1912, the first English translation of De Re Metallica was privately published in London by subscription. The translators were Herbert Hoover, a mining engineer (and later President of the United States), and his wife, Lou Henry Hoover, a geologist and Latinist. The translation is notable not only for its clarity of language, but for the extensive footnotes, which detail the classical references to mining and metals. Subsequent translations into other languages, including German, owe much to the Hoover translations, as their footnotes detail their difficulties with Agricola's invention of several hundred Latin expressions to … [Click Below for Full Description]

BULLOCK, Shan F.
First edition; original green cloth lettered in black and original dust jacket. Frontispiece photograph of Thomas Andrews and five other plates. Inscribed by Thomas Andrews snr, on the half title 'Mr David Brennan from his friend Thomas Andrews'. Thomas Andrews, Jr. (7 February 1873 - 15 April 1912) was a British businessman and shipbuilder. He was managing director and head of the drafting department of the shipbuilding company Harland and Wolff. As the naval architect in charge of the plans for the ocean liner RMS Titanic, he was travelling on board the vessel during her transatlantic maiden voyage in 1912. He perished along with more than 1,500 others when the ship sank after hitting an iceberg. His body was never recovered. In 1884, he attended the Royal Belfast Academical Institution and in 1889 he began an aprenticeship at Harland and Wolff where his uncle, the Viscount Pirrie, was part owner. He spent three months in the joiners' shop, followed by a month in the cabinetmakers' and then a further two months working on the ships. The last eighteen months of his five-year apprenticeship were spent in the drawing office. In 1901, Andrews, after working his way up through the many departments of the company, became the manager of the construction works. In 1907, Andrews was appointed the managing director and head of the drafting department at Harland and Wolff. Andrews began to oversee the plans for a new superliner, the RMS Olympic for the White Star Line. The Olympic and its sister ship the Titanic, which began construction in 1909, were designed by William Pirr … [Click Below for Full Description]
