RICHMOND, Paul James
1912. Near Fine. Softcover. Two volumes. Original typescript logs of adventures undertaken by a group of young men along the Illinois-Iowa border, the first on foot, the other by boat, both interspersed with original black and white photographs and two cyanotypes. The photos are clear and well-executed. Descriptions as follows: 1. *Log Book of the Ankle Express, August 15-20, 1912*. Gray paperwraps, cloth tape spine, with title printed on the front cover, and a small cut-out photo of the "Ankle Express" knapsack carried by the group. Measuring 8.25" x 6". [41], (2) pp. of typescript, rectos only, approximately 7000 words, with 35 photos laid down (30 incorporated in the text; five on two pages at the end). Laid in are two small "calling cards," with Richmond's name penned in stylized script; Richmond's bookplate tipped in to the inside of the front cover. The first log book describes a hike by Paul James Richmond and three of his friends, from Lacon, Illinois to Davenport, Iowa from August 15-20, 1912. The group of four (apparently high school friends), calling itself the "Ankle Express" journeyed by foot, and occasionally via a friendly auto ride to their destination, a trip of some 114 miles. Both the journals are by Richmond, though only the second one bears his name under the title. He is probably also responsible for much of the photography, showing candid scenes of the group and the people and places they encounter along the way. Richmond and his friends A.T. Stephens, A.W. Ford, and B.B. Grieves embarked on their "Ankle Express" hike in the summer of 1912. Each man h … [Click Below for Full Description]

Introduction en français de Jacques NAYRAL. (Art moderne, modern art, Armory Show, avant-garde, cubisme, cubism). [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Beautiful copy of this shirt in the collection "Modes and manners of today ' hui", the publication of the best of fashion at the beginning of the 20th century, by artists the having made, at the top of their art. The project is supported by Pierre Corrard, writer and editor of great talent. In order to support the revolution art and clothing of the roaring twenties, he published, in 1912, a first shirt, with illustrations of Georges Lepape. Before the reception to this first publication, he decides, each year, to propose a similar shirt, with authors and various artists. In 1920, it is Robert Bonfils and Gérard of Paris that will provide Pierre Corrard elements to achieve the annual shirt. This shirt is like all the others in the series: under a cardboard fort, which the first dish is hit only titles and years, with, in its centre, a color illustration, the boards take place in a set of four flaps made of the same paper that one illustrating against guard, and including the pattern was designed by the artist realizing the inner boards. The book, in sheets, begins with a title page containing the cover illustration. Then come the pages offering the text, and, after the colophon, illustrated boards. A special care is given to the realization of these boards, from engraving to the passage of the stencils. The origin of our copy is exceptional: it comes directly from the Corrard family. [Anonymous] and Harrison Cady (illustrator)
New York: McBride, Nast & Co., 1912. First edition thus. Hardcover. New. 8vo. Red pictorial cloth. Minor bumping to spine ends and corners; sparse toning/foxing to pages. About near fine. 267pp. Early work featuring an independent and successful disabled protagonist, first serialized in 1908. A first-person narrative, ostensibly by an anonymous young woman, recounting her ambitions and achievements following the loss of one leg in early childhood and the consequent physical and social restrictions imposed on her. Presented as nonfiction and received as such by contemporary reviewers, with the publisher responding to one enthusiastic contemporary reader: "Our contract with the author especially provides that we are not to reveal the identity, and we cannot give the names of any other books by this author without violating our agreement." ("Travel," Jan. 1913.) Another memoirist, however, in her own account of life with a similar disability, wrote: "The book proved to be the bastard brain child of a big and bouncing and very jolly New York businessman and writer. He does use crutches, having a pair of unreliable knees [...] but he is definitely not a fascinating little feminine hopper. Although he admits openly to a new legitimate book every year or so, he never confesses his paternity to THE GIRL WITH THE ROSEWOOD CRUTCHES, that poor love child of his careless youth." ("Out on a Limb," Louise Baker, 1946.) Despite the book's sentimentality and inspirational appeal, its treatment of disability is engagingly modern and matter-of-fact in many respects: as … [Click Below for Full Description]

O'Henry
Doubleday, Page and Company, New York, 1912. 12 Volumes. Magnificently bound by Monastery Hill Bindery (not signed) in full crushed maroon morocco, both covers elegantly tooled in flowing vine pattern terminally onlayed with stylized flower and petal designs in green and beige morocco, chiefly on front cover, but each back cover with similar, though less detailed design. As well, large mosquito with onlaid olive green wings, spines with six compartments, four of which containing similar onlaid floral designs, wide dentells with superb gilt designs on each four corners, with additional green blossoms, silk watered moire doublures and endsheets. This is the so-called "Manuscript Edition," originally 12 volumes. This set contains 10 volumes, but expanded to 12, in this Monastery Hill binding, with the addition of the O'Henry Bibliography and The Wind of Destiny (both 1916). This set does not contain the manuscript. A prodigious effort by Monastery Hill, probably executed circa 1916, and to our knowledge, one of the few sets of this size with their bindings. Overall very good condition, with some volumes showing wear at the joints along the spine, some browntoning internally on the acidic paper used for this edition. A rare offering indeed. San Francisco, A.M. Robertson, 1912. First Edition. First Impression. Hardback. A lovely copy of an early Smith work, SIGNED by the author without inscription to the half-title. Gathers together 55 of his poems. One of the so-called big three of the Weird Tales magazine, Smith was fairly prolific in his poetry and short stories, though only published one novel-length work which remained unpublished until 2002 [Hippocampus Press]. The Star-Treader is regarded as one of his better works. Slight edge wear to the jacket, but still remarkable condition given the age (the jacket is printed on nice, thick paper though). One hand-written correction to the first poem, Nero. A wonderful opportunity to own an early piece of Smith and the whole weird tales legacy.
