O'CASEY, SEAN
O'Casey refers to two of his little known plays, actors, the Abbey Theater and Lady Gregory. He writes to Lewis Funke, Esq. (1912-1992), drama editor, "The New York Times." O'Casey makes it clear at the outset and end of the letter that he is ill by drawing a sketch of himself lying on his back under a blanket, his feet sticking out, a pointed object hanging over his mouth. He writes under the self-portrait sketch, "And so to bed again," a fitting reference to the Diary of Samuel Pepys. The letter reads: "Dear Lewis, Writing this from the De Profundis of a bed - a damned "Communistic" virus infiltrated into me body politick, and laid me low. 'Cooing of Doves' - at the time of its rejection, I told Gabriel Fallon, then a friend of mine and an Abbey [Abbey Theater] actor at the time, now a Director of the Abbey; and Barry Fitzgerald, another friend then & who is so still. Lady Gregory alone of the others remembered, and, when I went to Coole Park, she mentioned how happily the "Cooing of Doves" became welded into the heart of another play. It went in with but a few minor changes , but what puzzled me was why "Kathleen Listens In" [a lost early play of O'Casey] was preferred to it in the first instance; for then puzzlement was the one way of solving it, for I know very little then about Theater or anything else. I'm glad Phyllis was there to hear what I said about her. Next time she's with you, give her a kiss form me - a real affectionate one. My love to Mrs. Funke....as ever Sean....". Lewis Bernard Funke was a freelance writer, born in the Bronx in 1912. He worked for "Th … [Click Below for Full Description]

AMUNDSEN, Roald.
Kristiania: Jacob Dybwads Forlag, 1912. Two volumes, octavo; many photographic illustrations, eight maps at the end (three folding and one double-page); original pictorial cloth, in very fine condition. First edition in the original Norwegian; very scarce. a superb copy, with the pictorial bindings in especially bright condition. This is the commander's narrative of this most important expedition, the first attainment of the South Pole in competition with Scott. Originally intending a North Polar expedition in the Fram, borrowed from Fridtjof Nansen, Amundsen changed plans at the last minute and set out to be the first to reach the Pole. Nonetheless, the expedition was well organised, and was favoured by the weather, which enabled the Amundsen party to cover 1860 miles in just 99 days. Racing against Scott's party, Amundsen and his party reached the Pole in December 1911, some 34 days before Scott. "Amundsen's modest account of his extraordinary South Pole exploit is a classic in the exploration literature" (Rosove). This was the only substantial contemporary account of the expedition (the one other first-hand account was published in English in 1936 by Helmer Hanssen). Provenance: Private collection (Australia) In virtually mint condition in original pictorial bindings.

[SCHOENBERG]. Berg, Alban et al.
München: R. Piper & Co, 1912. First Edition. Rare. A collection of essays by students and friends of Schoenberg devoted to all aspects of Schoenberg's work: his music, harmony textbook, paintings, and teaching. Schoenberg expected unconditional discipleship from his students and friends, but the degree of devotion displayed in this book, summed up in its dedication, uncharacteristically embarrassed him, at the time only 38 years old: "I feel I am being talked about in really much to effusive a way. I am too young for this kind of praise, have accomplished too little and too little that is perfect... Were I not spoiling the joy of my students by doing so, I might possibly have rejected the book. On the other hand, however, I was so overwhelmed by the great love which shows in all this... And I was proud as well." Schoenberg's diary, February 25, 1912.. Octavo. Original publisher's dark yellow wrappers. 1f. (half title), 1f. (title, with printed notes to verso), 1f. AMUNDSEN, Roald
Jacob Dybwads Forlag, Kristiania 1912 - Two volumes, octavo; many photographic illustrations, eight maps at the end (three folding and one double-page); original pictorial cloth, in very fine condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Saba, Umberto [U. Poli]
Firenze, Pubblicato dalla «Libreria della Voce» (Stab. Tipogr. «Aldino»), 1912 [nov.?], Rara edizione originale, opera seconda.
