Conrad, Joseph
1912. [in (original?) glassine] Hodder & Stoughton / New York / George H. Doran Company, n.d. [1912]. Original red cloth. First American Edition of this three-tale collection best known for "The Secret Sharer" -- Conrad's most famous short story other than "Heart of Darkness." This was Doran's first and only printing of this book (these were relatively small printings, as Conrad's popularity was then at its nadir). It was produced by Doran in collaboration with the English publisher Hodder & Stoughton -- whose name appears at the foot of the spine. Within ten months Doran sold the copyright and plates to Doubleday Page, who (due to the success of Conrad's next book CHANCE) promptly issued another printing, in similar bright red cloth but with a ship vignette added to Doran's binding. That DP&Co reprint would be noteworthy because it would be Conrad's first association with Doubleday Page (who would thereafter be his American publisher), and also because it would be the first volume bound in DP's "Conrad style" (as all the others would be, though in navy blue rather than red cloth).~This is a near-fine copy (very slight rubbing at the corners). This copy comes in an old (slightly edge-worn) plain glassine wrapper -- possibly original. Cagle A16b.

Widmungsexemplar - Helmut Jenne - Jenne, Helmut.
[Click Below for Full Description]

Housed in a custom-made green cloth box with gilt red laetaher title-label to spine. (4), 647 pp + folded map + publisher's catalogue (38, (2) pp). ¶ Scarce first edition - especially in this condition - of what is generally regarded as Durkheim's magnum opus, his groundbreaking study of totemism among the Australian aborigines, which led him to the foundational conclusion that religion is social, that the primary purpose of religion is to bind people together. Showing that society is the soul of religion, that society is the foundation of all religious belief, and that religion is what allows for a society to express its social unity "The Elementary forms of religious Life" furthermore explains the enduring relevance of religion throughout history. In this milestone work of sociology, Durkheim sets out to discover the enduring source of human social identity. To that aim, he investigates totemism among the Australian Aborigines, acknowledging that all religion has its origin in totemism. Totems are collective symbols that represent both a god and society. The collective thought, of which totemism is an early expression, is the basis of all religious thought and as such also of philosophy and modern science. The work came to have a profound effect on not only sociology and religion, but also on philosophy, psych … [Click Below for Full Description]

BRUCE, Mary Grant.
Ward Lock & Co Ltd., London 1912 - Hardcover. 8vo. 240pp, (xvi publisher's catalog). Navy cloth illustrated in blind and gilt with gilt lettering to upper board and spine. Illustrated in b&w by J. Macfarlane with a frontispiece and seven plates. An unusually clean copy of this early work by popular Australian children's author Mary Grant Bruce. It was based on a series of tales originally written for "The Leader" and records the adventures of Timothy, a poor child, and his conversations with the animals of the Australian bush. It includes a meeting with the mythical Australian creature, the Bunyip (who is also the subject of one of the plates). Cloth very lightly rubbed, spine a little faded, spine ends and corners lightly bumped and a bit chafed with some very light fraying to upper corner and upper spine. Two inch long quarter inch wide white stripe to middle of rear board (it almost looks like a brush stroke), contemporary school award bookplate on front pastedown, and old neat owner's name on half title. Pages lightly browned and with scattered light foxing, a few plates lose but present and could easily be retipped. Overall a solid, unmarked VG copy, actually probably one of the nicest that might be found of this scarce book. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
