Originally bound in cream sheep, respined in deep cream buckram using original maroon moire boards and retaining later manuscript title label to spine. All edges marbled. New marbled endpapers with original label retained from Lydall & Son of Lewisham to rear paste-down. Boards surface scuffed with wear to edge. Paper title label "Uncle Whit's Accounts Free Church League for Women's Suffrage (Lewisham)" with "including family letters 1918-39" crossed through. The family letters have been excised, accounting for pp 64-101, pp 148-161, 170-1, 200-1 and 240-49 lacking. However all of the Free Church League accounts from 1912 to 1918 remain. The contents include an Index of all the subscribers and the amounts they gave, and shows a steady increase in membership over the period, presumably reflecting public opinion that women deserved representation. Most members paid 1 or 2 shillings, while a handful of wealthier contributors gave up to 5. Membership was mainly but not exclusively female, and included a number of married couples. Also recorded are expenses for items such as Banners, and money donated to good causes, which included war relief efforts, the London School of Medicine for Women and School for Mothers. The Free Church League for Woman's Suffrage was founded in 1910 in response to the formation of the Anglican organisation the Church League for Women's Suffrage in 1909; the FCLWS was a smaller organis … [Click Below for Full Description]

A corner stone in any collection of books on the Antarctic. - Norwegian Capt ain Roald Amundsen's modest account of his extraordinary South Pole exploit is a classic in exploration literature. (Rosove 9.a.1.). - Amundsen dreamed of performing in the Antarctic the feat which Peary had accomplished in the Arctic, namely the conquest of the Pole. Having heard that the British explorer Robert Falcon Scott was preparing to do the same thing, with considerable material resources, his one desire was to forestall him. On 9 August, 1910, he sailed from Akersfus (Norway), aboard the Fram. - No Polar Expedition Was Ever Better Prepared. They took a whole house, 25ft by 11ft, 15 tents, each of which could accommodate 16 men, 10 sledges, dogs from Greenland, and provisions in abundance. Scott had left England on June 5th with even more equipment and a larger party but subsequent events showed that he lacked the polar sense' which Amun … [Click Below for Full Description]

Münich: F. Straub for the Verlag der Königlich Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, 1912. First edition. First edition, very rare offprint issue, of Laue's Nobel Prize-winning report of "one of the most beautiful discoveries in physics" (Einstein). X-rays had been in wide use since their discovery in 1895 but their exact nature as electromagnetic waves of short wavelength was first elucidated by Laue and his collaborators in the present papers. Laue (1879-1960) had moved in 1909 from Berlin (where he was Planck's assistant) to Ludwig Maximillians University in Münich, where he was Arnold Sommerfeld's Privatdozent. In the spring of 1912 he was asked by Sommerfeld's doctoral student Paul Ewald a question about the arrangement of atoms in a crystal. In attempting to answer this question "Laue had the crucial idea of sending X-rays through crystals. At this time scientists were very far from having proven the supposition that the radiation that Röntgen had discovered in 1895 actually consisted of very short electromagnetic waves. Similarly, the physical composition of crystals was in dispute, although it was frequently stated that a regular structure of atoms was the characteristic property of crystals. Laue argued that if these suppositions were correct, then the behavior of X-radiation upon penetrating a crystal should be approximately the same as that of light upon striking a diffraction grating" (DSB), an instrument used for measuring the wavelength of light, inapplicable to X-rays because their wavelength is too short. Sommerfeld was initially skeptical but Laue persis … [Click Below for Full Description]

The second, and most important of his explorations, which is the subject of "Ruins of Desert Cathay" was undertaken in 1906-08. It was in 1907 in Chinese Turkestan that he discovered a trove of thousands of manuscripts walled up in a room in the "Cave of a Thousand Buddhas," including a block printed roll of the Buddhist text "The Diamond Sutra" dating to 868 CE, now considered to be the oldest known printed book.
