John B Walker
See listing. A New Hampshire Countess By Hon. Joseph B Walker April 23, 1912. A 48 page Manuscript Apparently an unpublished original piece about the Countess Rumford by this noted New Hampshire historian. Upon the death of Benjamin Thompson (best known for his work in thermodynamics), his daughter from his first marriage, Sarah, inherited his title as Countess Rumford. The Countess was Sarah Thompson (1774-1852) Born in Concord New Hampshire, only daughter of Benjamin Thompson Count Rumford, who was born in Woburn Massachusetts (1753-1814) and Sarah Walker (1739-1792) who were married in 1772. (her late husband Col. Benjamin Rolfe left her property at Concord, New Hampshire, then called Rumford.) She was a granddaughter of Rev Timothy Walker the first, settled minister of Concord. Interesting to note mention of a slave of Mrs. Benjamin Thompson named Dinah. During the Revolutionary War her father, Benjamin took the side of the British, and at the end of the war moved to London, where he was knighted in 1784. In 1785, when Sarah was eleven years old, her father moved to Bavaria. She, however, remained in New England with her mother. In 1792, Benjamin Thompson was created a Count of the Holy Roman Empire. He took the name "Rumford" for Rumford, New Hampshire, which was an older name for the town of Concord, where he had been married, becoming "Count Rumford". Around 1796, at her father's request, Sarah traveled to London to be with him, since her mother had died. In 1797, the Elector of Bavaria accepted her as a Countess of the Holy Roman Empire. In recognition of her father … [Click Below for Full Description]

TSVETAEVA, Marina Ivanovna
1912. "RARE FIRST EDITION OF TSVETAEVA’S SECOND BOOK OF POETRY, CONTAINING TWO OF HER MOST FAMOUS POEMS. ‘Volshebnyi fonar’, Tsvetaeva’s second book of poetry, came out in 1912, when she was twenty years old. The format of the volume, dedicated to her husband, the writer Sergei Efron, made it look like a small velvet-bound prayer book, hinting at the purity and innocence of childhood scenes described in Part I of the volume. ‘Fonar’, despite being largely preoccupied with childhood impressions, is a more mature and bolder book of poetry than Tsvetaeva’s first collection, ‘Vechernii al’bom’ (‘The Evening Album’, 1910). It touches on such themes as the fragility of happiness, suicide, feminist rebellion (foreshadowing Tsvetaeva’s affair with Sofia Parnok), the slow disappearance of the old Russia. It also establishes one of Tsvetaeva’s future leitmotifs – the nostalgia for the old noble Moscow (‘Domiki staroi Moskvy’). The volume opens with an address to the reader, in which Tsvetaeva, almost apologetically, writes that ‘a woman’s book of poetry is nothing more than a magic lantern’. However, this address may have been false modesty on Tsvetaeva’s part. In ‘Fonar’ she embraces the feminine stance on life, focusing on her relationship with her mother and sister Asya, challenging at the same time the traditional vision of a woman as a shy ‘sheep’ (‘Tol’ko devochka’). The dream occupation of Tsvetaeva’s speaker is to be a military drummer (‘Baraban’). ‘Fonar’ consists of three parts. Part I is an ode to childhood, with its tragedies, like the mother’s sadness and bad marks at sc … [Click Below for Full Description]

AGRICOLA, Georgius
London 'Published for the Translators by The Mining Magazine' 1912. London, 'Published for the Translators by The Mining Magazine', 1912. Folio, [iv], xxxii, 640, [1] (colophon) pages with approximately 270 illustrations (and a facsimile of the original title page) plus a folding page of illustrations. Original full vellum lettered and decorated in black on the spine; top edge uncut and almost entirely unopened; boards very slightly bowed; vellum a little foxed and marked, with minor silverfish loss to the top edge of the rear board; top edge a little foxed and dusty; a very good copy (internally excellent). The first edition 'of Agricola's "De Re Metallica" (On Metals), illustrated with over 270 woodcuts, embraced everything connected with Renaissance mining and metallurgical industries, including administration, the duties of companies and workers, prospecting, mechanical engineering, ore processing and the manufacture of glass, sulfur and alum. Book VI provided detailed descriptions of sixteenth-century mining technologies, such as the use of water-power for crushing ore and the improvements in suction pumps and ventilation that became necessary as mine shafts were sunk deeper underground; it also includes an account of the diseases and accidents prevalent among miners, along with the means of preventing them. It is thus a pioneering work in occupational medicine. "De Re Metallica" remained the standard textbook on mining and metallurgy for over two hundred years..... In 1912 American mining engineer and industrialist, and later 31st President of the United States [1929- … [Click Below for Full Description]

Thayer, Phineas (Thayer, Ernest Lawrence)
Chicago: A.C. McClurg and Co, 1912. Hard Cover. First Edition. Fine. Illustrated by Dan Sayre Groesbeck. First hardcover edition. Publisher's green paper boards, with an illustration of a bat wrapped in black ribbon to the front board, lettered in gold. Near fine, with only a touch of wear to the spine ends, otherwise an extremely bright and fine copy. Casey at the Bat is an iconic baseball poem that was first published in the San Francisco Daily Examiner on June 3, 1888, and popularized by comedic actor DeWolf Hopper later in the same year. Specifically, the poem describes the fictional "Mudville Nine" team and their star player, the "Mighty Casey." Notably, both Alfred H. Spink's The National Game (1910) and A.G. Spalding's America's National Game (1911), which Encyclopædia Britannica calls the first attempts at writing a standard history of baseball, cite Casey at the Bat as "the best baseball poem ever written.". BRADLEY, Katharine, & Edith Cooper.] FIELD, Michael.
London & Edinburgh: Sands & Co., [1912]. Octavo. Original purple cloth, titles to spine in gilt, front cover elaborately blocked in gilt with art nouveau iconographic design by Charles Ricketts, edges untrimmed. Spine lightly faded, minor rubbing to extremities, boards slightly bowed, very occasional foxing to contents, central vertical crease from production fault to pp. 41-2; a very good copy indeed. First edition of this collaboration by Edith Emma Cooper and her aunt and sometime lover Katharine Harris Bradley, pseudonymously-published as Michael Field. Their first publication as "Michael Field", Callirhoë (1884), was publicly well-received, with The Spectator greeting it "as a work of 'great promise', exhibiting 'the true poetic [and dramatic] fire'" and later asking, "will the pseudonym of 'Michael Field' become greater even than that of 'George Eliot'?" (Blain, p. 247). Although contemporary admirers of their work included writers such as Robert Browning, George Meredith and Algernon Charles Swinburne, until very recently their work was not widely critically studied. Whilst Cooper and Bradley's work was highly collaborative (both sharing in tasks such as editing and proofing) it was not, however, homogenous, and the present collection of Catholic lyric poetry is believed to have been composed predominantly by Edith (1862–1913). It was Cooper's final authorial contribution to the pair's work, the majority of which was written from her sickbed (she died shortly after the work's publication). Despite explicitly identifying first as atheists (1877) and later as pagans (1 … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

First edition, first printing. Publisher's ribbed dark maroon cloth stamped in gilt. Near Fine with spine lightly faded and cloth lightly rubbed at the extremities. An exceptionally well preserved set of this rare lunar atlas. ---- Ashworth, The face of the moon, Linda Hall 27; NDB 13, 44 - THE RARE FIRST ENLARGED EDITION. "Krieger was a gifted draftsman, but he realized that it made little sense to spend time drawing features that the camera could record. So he had the brilliant idea of starting with a low-contrast photograph as a base and adding the finer details by hand at the telescope. The resulting maps of selected craters were not equaled until the U.S. Air Force began issuing its own series of photobased lunar charts in the 1960's. Krieger published the first volume of his drawings in 1898; it contained 28 plates. Due to overwork, his health broke shortly thereafter, and he died before the contemplated second volume could be issued. His manuscripts were taken over by Rudolf König, and the remaining drawings were finally published in 1912." (Ashworth 27). Th … [Click Below for Full Description]

Colonel Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919); [Julian Harris (b.1874)]
[New York: Mail and Express Job Print. 1912.] 16pp. First Edition. Self-titled wraps. A fine copy. At the 1912 Progressive or "Bull Moose" Party Convention a controversy arose over Southern black delegates. While the convention allowed black delegates from Northern States to participate, some in the party and its presidential nominee, Theodore Roosevelt, objected to African-American delegates from the South whom they viewed as unable to effect progressive political change. Roosevelt writes: "I earnestly believe that by appealing to the best white man in the South, the men of justice and vision.and by frankly putting the movement in their hands.we shall create a situation by which the colored men of the South will ultimately get justice." In fact, the Progressive Party's platform-its "Contract With the People"-did not even address civil rights for Blacks. The Negro Question documents Roosevelt's interaction with white progressive Southern journalist Julian Harris and includes Roosevelt's editorial "The Progressive and the Colored Man." With a large "Bull Moose" Party moose stamp on upper cover. Well-represented on OCLC. Scarce to commerce and in such fine condition. Work, p395. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
