HUOT, V.
Paris?, 1912. Wood engraving, printed in black and blue. Printed area 335 x 295mm. Binding folds, corner of bottom left margin lacking. A map of the route Amundsen took across Antarctica to his discovery of the South Pole in December 1911, with an inset showing his voyage to the continent. It was first published in the French edition of Amundsen's 'To the South Pole', but this version was an extract printed for Amundsen's lecture to the 'Société de Geographie'. Although it also marks the expedition of Ernest Shackleton (1908-9) there is no mention of poor Captain Robert Scott, probably because the final resting place of his expedition was only found the month before this lecture.

Colour portrait frontispiece of Napoleon, 54 colour and two other plates, all tipped to grey heavy stock textured paper leaves. A lavishly produced edition of Ségur's "influential history of the Russian campaign" (Sandler) published to mark the centenary, originally issued in 1824 as Histoire de Napoléon et de la grande armée pendant l'année 1812. Ségur took part in the campaign as a general of brigade. The unfavourable portrait of Napoleon given in this book provoked representations from General Gourgaud, and eventually a duel, in which Ségur was wounded. Adam Zamoyski, in his celebrated account of Napoleon's invasion of Russia, recounts that Ségur sought a "metaphysical explanation" for the stoicism of the French soldier during the terrible retreat, "They should have blamed Napoleon but they did not because he belonged to them as much as they to him, he argued. [Houston, 1912. Very good.. 149 original photographs, measuring 1.5 x 1.5 to 3.5 x 4.5 inches. Oblong octavo. Original leatherette album, photos mounted directly on thick black paper stock, most captioned in pencil on mounts. Light soiling and wear to covers. Blind embossed private library stamp at lower edge of first leaf. Several photos lightly creased at edges or trimmed to fit available space. Five loose photographs in a laid-in envelope. A sentimental, but extensive and well-composed photograph album containing nearly 150 original images that document the life of a newlywed couple in the Montrose neighborhood of Houston during the early 1910s. The principal subjects of the album, Jesse Lyon Myers and Elizabeth "Bessie" Hammond, were married in early 1912 and built a new home on Hyde Park Boulevard, which is still standing today. This house and another new home down the street (no longer extant) belonging Myers' uncle, Chosen Houston Myers, are prominently featured in the album. The initial images depict the home sites, foundations, construction, and several views of the completed Arts & Crafts structures. A series of photographs showing the house interiors highlights the stenciled wallpapers, quarter-sawn oak furniture, elaborate textiles, and architectural details of the two homes. The couple also maintained a cabin at Sylvan Beach, just south of La Porte on Trinity Bay, to which they travelled in their automobile, visible in one of the shots of the small house. They spent some of their leisure time boating and fishing in Galveston as well, of which there … [Click Below for Full Description]

San Francisco, A.M. Robertson, 1912. First Edition. First Impression. Hardback. A lovely copy of an early Smith work, SIGNED by the author without inscription to the half-title. Gathers together 55 of his poems. One of the so-called big three of the Weird Tales magazine, Smith was fairly prolific in his poetry and short stories, though only published one novel-length work which remained unpublished until 2002 [Hippocampus Press]. The Star-Treader is regarded as one of his better works. Slight edge wear to the jacket, but still remarkable condition given the age (the jacket is printed on nice, thick paper though). One hand-written correction to the first poem, Nero. A wonderful opportunity to own an early piece of Smith and the whole weird tales legacy. SIRINGO, CHARLES A.
W. B. Conkey Company, 1912., Chicago. First edition. 8vo. Red cloth, 519 pp., 20 plates. Siringo's second autobiography, this work picks up where his exceedingly rare A Texas Cowboy (Chicago, 1885) leaves off. Having worked for the Pinkerton Detective Agency from 1886 to 1907, Siringo decided to write a narrative of his experiences entitled Pinkerton's Cowboy Detective. Claiming that the narrative violated the confidentiality agreement that Siringo had undertaken while working for the agency, the Pinkerton Detective Agency successfully stopped publication of that work. Siringo then changed the title to A Cowboy Detective, deleted some of the text, changed the name of the agency in the book to Dickenson Detective Agency, and changed the names of many of the people in the book, such as "Tim Corn" for Tom Horn. Finally issued in 1912, this work was the subject of another lawsuit by the Pinkerton Detective Agency, suppressing its distribution and leading to 15 years of legal feuding between Siringo and the Pinkerton Detective Agency. Spine panel somewhat faded, light wear to the spine ends and corners, else a very good copy of this very scarce, suppressed work. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Cundill, Frank
[Timberlake, SD], 1912. 27 Real Photo Postcards [9 cm x 14 cm] Most in nice condition. Eight contain manuscript notes. Complete list of views and images available. Frank Cundill (1887-1965) grew up in Maquoketa, Iowa, working in his father's photography studio. After graduating from high school in 1905, he attended Southern School of Photography (McMinnville, TN). He worked as a professional photographer in Indiana, Illinois and Iowa before joining the migration of settlers in the newly opened Cheyenne River and Standing Rock reservation in South Dakota in the early 1900s. Cundill filed a homestead claim in Timberlake where he would reside for the next four decades working the land as a farmer and rancher. Shortly after arriving in South Dakota, he began taking pictures, some of his best and most valuable work was of the Sioux people of the Cheyenne River and Standing Rock Reservations. Cundill did not have a studio for making enlargements so his 5" x 7" glass plate negatives were used to produce real photo postcards.

VAMBA (PSEUD. DI LUIGI BERTELLI)[]
Firenze, R. Bemporad and F. Editori (Stabilimento Tipo-litografico G. Spinelli) (1912). Cm. 27, pp. (4) 193 (1). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
