Frank LLoyd Wright
Chicago: Ralph Fletcher Seymour, 1912. See Images. One of the rarest and most sought after books by Frank LLoyd Wright. I am selling my personal copy of The Japanese Print An Interpretation. I have owned this for many years but now find it is time to part with the book and put it in a good home. This is a very special publication, made of Fibrous Japanese paper endsheets. Printed on Japan vellum. First printing of the first edition, preceded by another printing which Wright disliked and destroyed. Depending on the reference, there were either thirty-five or fifty copies printed. This is a well cared for copy, see images as they are part of the description. This book offers an analysis of the print and the theories set forth in text can be read as a statement about Wright's approach to architecture. During his Oak Park years, Wright achieved in his buildings the qualities he admired most in the Japanese print: geometric abstraction, balance, a sense of repose, and above all, a simplicity attained by eliminating the inessential. I am happy to answer any questions and send you additional images if you would like. I will ship insured and signature required. [Attributes: First Edition; In Dust Jacket]

San Francisco, A.M. Robertson, 1912. First Edition. First Impression. Hardback. A lovely copy of an early Smith work, SIGNED by the author without inscription to the half-title. Gathers together 55 of his poems. One of the so-called big three of the Weird Tales magazine, Smith was fairly prolific in his poetry and short stories, though only published one novel-length work which remained unpublished until 2002 [Hippocampus Press]. The Star-Treader is regarded as one of his better works. Slight edge wear to the jacket, but still remarkable condition given the age (the jacket is printed on nice, thick paper though). One hand-written correction to the first poem, Nero. A wonderful opportunity to own an early piece of Smith and the whole weird tales legacy. Morgenstern, Christian, writer, literary critic, and translator (1871-1914).
1912. 8vo. 7 pp. on 4 ff. To the painter Fürst, who had asked him a question concerning theosophy, in particular about the personal circumstances of one Ms. Martha Reif. Morgenstern gives detailed information on that lady, who - he supposes - was born in Wroclaw and was married to a painter. After some years living in Taormina, they are said to have divorced, and at the time of writing she resides in Vienna: "[...] I mention this lady, although one may never fully foresee how a personal acquaintance will work out, and whether or not it is helpful to our cause. There are so many mirrors that reflect the teachings of our occidental theosophists [...]" (transl.). - Slight spotting, with insignificant edge defects.

Robert Ridgway
Washington, D.C.: Published by the author, 1912. Second Revised and Expanded Edition. Very good+ in its original dark green cloth covered boards with gilt text on the front board with the gilt text on the spine which is worn but clearly visible. The cloth at the head and heel of the spine is lightly rubbed as is the cloth atthe tips of the boards. The hinges remain strong as the original binding used cloth hinges. Without a dust jacket, probably as issued. This is the original publication with all of the carefully created color swatches which can not be accurately digitized in the print-on-demand versions so prevalent. 44 pages of text followed by 53 plates of color swatches containing 1,115 named colors. Each plate is protected by a tissue guard. The errata slip which explains plates XXII and XXIV is missing from this copy. Twenty years in the making, this book represents a seminal achievement in the advancement of color identification for use in ornithology and botany. Ridgway (1850-1929) was a botanist and an ornithologist, a founder of the American Ornithologists' Union and curator of birds in the United States Museum (Smithsonian) from 1880 to 1915. This edition greatly expands and corrects the first edition of the title which was released in 1886. Hand stenciling of the plates for the first edition lead to "considerable variation in different copies of the book." (p. 13) This volume is a very scarce and an important work in the areas of ornithology, botany and color theory. [Attributes: In Dust Jacket]

[Arizona]. Grand Canyon Lime & Cement Co
[Nelson, Az, 1912. Good.. 163 photographs on twenty-seven leaves. Most images 3.5 x 5.5 inches. Oblong octavo. Original black cloth. Light wear to binding. Photos pasted to leaves; some leaves with light creasing. A handful of photos torn away slightly from leaf. Images generally sharp and clean. An interesting album of photographs documenting life at and around the Grand Canyon Lime & Cement Company in rural Arizona at the turn of the century. The first page opens with a series of images which are captioned in ink. They show a house, a train, and a view of the mining town and are labeled respectively, "#1 This is what I left," "#2 This is what I came on," and "This is what I came to." The company built a small town to house its workers, and by 1910 there was a bustling populace of about 300 souls, including children. The album continues with views of the mine and company store, the miners, and life in the town and surrounding area, including a wedding and interior shots of homes and the company store. Many of the miners, as well as the bridal party, appear to be Mexican. Several images are captioned within the negative with such wonderful and quirky captions as "Jolly Boys" (two toddlers smiling and holding pistols) and "Four of a Kind" (two men holding dogs). An interesting and engaging album.

Ridgway, Robert

First Appearance in Print of two of the most consequential and far reaching papers in the history of nuclear physics.By publishing the results of their research work, Max von Laue (1879-1960) provided the young science of atomic physics with a most powerful tool. Since Röntgen's first discovery, the nature of x-rays had been long in doubt. In the present paper, Max von Laue and his co-workers suggest the accepted atomic arrangement of crystals might form a grating sufficiently fine to diffract the X-rays and thus to give their wavelength. He worked out a complicated formula for the operation in his second paper "A Quantitative Proof of the Theory".Laue wrote in his autobiography: "I was plunged into deep thought as I walked home along Leopoldstrasse just after Friedrich showed me this picture (the first of which are today called Laue diagrams; on a photographic plate).
