Dreiser, Theodore
Harper & Brothers Publishers, New York. First editions of the first novel of the author's acclaimed Trilogy of Desire. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by the author on the front free endpaper, "Theodore Dreiser N.Y. Jan. 1938." Bookplate removal to the pastedown, in near fine condition. Rare and desirable signed. Frank Cowperwood, a fiercely ambitious businessman, emerges as the very embodiment of greed as he relentlessly seeks satisfaction in wealth, women, and power. As Cowperwood deals and double-deals, betrays and is in turn betrayed, his rise and fall come to represent the American success story stripped down to brutal realities-a struggle for spoils without conscience or pity. Dreiser's 1912 classic remains an unsparing social critique as well as a devastating character study of one of the most unforgettable American businessmen in twentieth-century literature. Goethe, Johann Wolfgang von]
The Doves Press, [Hammersmith], 1912. One of 200 copies, octovo size, 111 pp., in German. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) was a German statesman and a prolific writer whose work includes novels, poetry, dramas, and literary criticism; he was an early participant of the Sturm und Drang literary movement and rose to fame early in life with the publication of "The Sorrows of Young Werther". "Iphigenie auf Tauris" is a reworking of the Greek tragedy "Iphigenia in Tauris" by Euripides, and the narrative resonates with a quiet delicateness as Goethe weaves a masterful story of love and loss. This publication by The Doves Press is printed in the original German and is bound in vellum by the Doves Bindery. The Doves Press, founded by T. J. Cobden-Sanderson, was entirely self-sufficient, designing, printing, and binding its own books, and even cutting its own typeface for use in its publications; the books it published were often chosen for their typographical challenges, and were designed and printed with a simple elegance that did justice to the works' literary merits and the Press's skill and innovation. ___DESCRIPTION: Full limp vellum, gilt lettering on the spine, fore- and bottom edges rough cut, characters and stage directions printed in red, with titles, acts, and scenes printed in the margins, "The Doves Bindery" stamped in black at the bottom of the rear paste-down; Doves Roman type, octavo size (9.25" by 6.75"), pagination: [1-9] 10-110 [1 colophon], one of 200 copies, unnumbered. Ballet Russe] Swanson, George Allen. (1908-1962)
Watercolor on paper, signed 'George Alan Swanson' lower right, titled and inscribed 'Igor Youskevitch / Lubov Rostova' upper left, signed 'George Alan Swanson', titled, and inscribed 'Ballet Russe De Monte Carlo / Lubov Rostova / Igor Youskevitch' upper left.  16 x 12 3/4 in. (sight), 22 1/2 x 18 in. (frame). Beautifully framed. Set to "Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune" by Claude Debussy and with costumes and sets by Léon Bakst, the ballet was first performed in the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris on May 29, 1912. Considered to be one of the first modern ballets, the dancers were presented as part of a large tableau, a staging reminiscent of an ancient Greek vase painting. Presented in bare feet and rejecting classical formalism, the dancers often moved across the stage in profile as if on a bas relief, as can be seen in the present image. The work had an overtly erotic subtext beneath its façade of Greek antiquity, ending with a scene of graphic sexual desire. [Attributes: In Dust Jacket]

J.M.Barrie
London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1912. This second edition collectable rare book is signed and inscribed not JUST by J.M.Barrie but ALSO by the wonderful artist Arthur Rackham. It is dedicated to the fiance of a contemporary of Barrie in Oxford. I have it on the word of the family that Barrie was known to their grandfather. A rather romantic gift, which I wish to sell in order to help a young couple. The condition is fair to good with all colour prints and tissue inserts present and in good condition. One tissue is slightly loose . There is no dust jacket. There is some very minor disconnection between the spine and pages but the book is sound. There is very little age related marking to the pages. Returns are not accepted due to the value of the item and not wishing it to be lost, but private inspection by arrangement prior to purchase is. Delivery if not collected will be 'signed for ' or private courier and any insurance will be at the cost of the buyer. I will pay up to £25 towards postage.

Saint-Petersburg: P. Sincenko, 1912. 8°. 64 pp., original illustrated wrappers (Very Good, small tears in margins, and annotations on the cover and on the title page). RARE TOLSTOY EDITION: A rare Russian edition of Leo Tolstoy’s short novel was published in Sankt-Petersburg with a modern cover, reflecting the forms of the upcoming Constructivism. The short novel is an autobiographical story of the Tolstoy's struggle with a mid-life existential crisis and was originally titled An Introduction to a Criticism of Dogmatic Theology. The text was planned to be published in 1882 in a journal Russkaya Mysl, but was banned by the Orthodox censorship. Two years later the first edition was issued in Geneva. The text was not published in Russia until 1906, when it appeared in a journal Vsemirnyj Vestnik. This is a rare separately published edition, issued 6 year later. The title page is designed in a modern form, combining the contemporary modernist and futuristic lines. The following year, in 1913, the Constructivism made its formal debute in Russia. Arthur Rackham (illus.)
Hodder & Stoughton, London, 1912. No. 596 of an edition limited to 500 copies, numbered 101 to 600, signed by both publishers and printer/engravers, held in original printed box. 12 large mounted colour plates by Arthur Rackham, loosely presented within the portfolio. Portfolio. Full vellum, gilt lettered to front panel, boards with a hint of bowing but not especially noticeable, some mild dust-marking, original silk ties broken (which could easily be replaced), cover sheets with text all present, some leaves occasionally a little creased including the limitation, mild spotting to the margins of some of the mounts, but the images all clean and bright, held in original box, this a little soiled, with reinforcements to the corners, one corner absent altogether, nevertheless a very nice presentable example of an exceedingly scarce item, complete with all the Rackham plates, and bound in full vellum of which only one hundred or so were, the rest being in half vellum. Produced in the wake of the hugely successful publication of 'Peter and Wendy' the previous year. Sizeable and weighty, so shipping arrangements to be discussed with the vendor. Further condition inquiries welcome, extra photographs can be provided. Any London-based interest welcome to view the item in person following prior arrangement with the vendor. Leo TOLSTOY (1828-1910)
We could not trace any examples of the book on Worldcat [Attributes: First Edition]

Fables
London; New York: William Heinemann; Doubleday, Page & Co, 1912. Condition: Very good + - Signed. Limited deluxe edition, number 66 of 1450 copies, quarto size, [248] pp., signed by Arthur Rackham. This is the first edition of the new translation by V.S. Vernon Jones of those ancient Fables credited to the Greek story teller and fabulist known as Aesop. The fantastic characters, animals and objects that often appear as allegories in the stories are brought to a new dimension of life and meaning by the transcendent British illustrator Arthur Rackham (1867-1939), who is credited with renewing interest in book illustration at a vital moment of advances in printing technology. The subtle colors and thin feral lines were unlike anything that had come before, as if plucked from the fog of a wild imagination, breathing new life into the whole of children's book illustration. The thick pure rag paper in this deluxe edition provided a fine surface for the black and white illustrations, the color illustrations being some of the finest examples of the period. With an introduction by the inimitable G.K. Chesterton, influential author and literary critic of his day and who remains well-known for his own writings. DESCRIPTION: Rebound in full gilt-paneled white parchment with a small gilt-stamped rose to both boards, lettering in gilt to backstrip, top-edge gilt, other edges uncut, white suede endpapers, pictorial title-page, thirteen color plates mounted on heavy brown paper with lettered tissue guards, fifty-three drawings in text (nineteen are full-page); handmade all rag paper, quart … [Click Below for Full Description]

This book the sinking of the Titanic and other great disasters is a first edition from 1912. It's a leatherbound hard cover book and is in fair to good condition for the age. The front page where there is the picture of the titanic and the signed name Lora Paye as well as the next page of Captain Smith and the copyright page are loose from the book. Please note that this book is being sold as is. Whoever first owned this book likely knew people that were on the titanic as there are names of survivors and also lists of those that did not survive. There are pencil marks and some other writings next to names. I believe this to be a museum quality book and welcome any questions you may have. Titanic]
London, 1912. [2],74pp. Folio. Dbd. Minor wear. Very good. In a blue cloth folder. Uncommon first edition of the official report on the sinking of the Titanic, providing a full accounting of the ship's technical specifications, its journey, and the disaster which took it to the bottom of the North Atlantic. The report gives an account of the damage, saying that water rushed in at such a rate that "the ship's pumps could not possibly have coped, so that the damage done to these five compartments alone inevitably sealed the doom of the ship." The account of rescue gives a breakdown of passengers and crew who made it into the lifeboats: "The real difficulty in dealing with the question of the boats is to find the explanation of so many of them leaving the ship with comparatively few persons in them." Statistical analysis, delineated herein, shows what was to be expected - women and children had the highest survival rate, while first- and second-class passengers had better luck in getting into the boats than did those passengers in steerage. The report makes a point, however, of stating unequivocally that third class passengers were not treated unfairly, and that those steerage passengers who spoke English (and therefore, presumably, understood what was going on) were mostly saved. A fascinating and detailed accounting of this most significant of shipping disasters. [Attributes: First Edition]
