Löffler, Berthold (1874 Rosenthal, Böhmen - 1960 Vienna)
Vienna, 1912. 55 : 83 leaf - image 42 : 80,5. Original-color-lithograph, with monogram in the left corner LÖ. Rare trail-proof with wide margins and printers marks. Berthold Löffler was one of the main representatives of the Viennese art noveau and became famous for his book illustrations and poster designs. - This poster was aimd to advertise a newly opened restaurant in Salzburg, where Löffler and also Josef Hoffmann designed the interior decoration. This posters were also printed as postcards of the Wiener Werkstätte.

Mallory, George
London: Smith, Elder & Co, 1912. 1st Edition. ix, 337pp. Octavo. Bound in olive green publisher's cloth with gold gilt lettering stamped to the front board and spine. Portrait frontis. Some shelf wear to the boards; corners bumped and minor rubbing to the head and tail of the spine. Age toning to the text block. Signed by the previous owner, Edward Hilton Young, on the front paste down. Two hand-written letters by the author, George Mallory, addressed to Edward Hilton Young have been laid in loose. Also included: two biographies on George Mallory--one published in in 1927 by Oxford University Press and written by David Pye and the other published by Faber and Faber in 1969 by David Robertson. The Robertson book is in near fine condition with a price clipped jacket that has some minor edgewear; the Pye has some rubbing along the edges and bumping to the corners, as well as the head and tail of the spine and a prize bookplate to the front pastedown. Overall, the books and letters are in clean condition. A fascinating association copy of Mallory's book with the two letters written by Mallory to Edward Hilton Young. Mallory was an English mountaineer who took part in the first three British expeditions to Mount Everest in the early 1920s--during the 1924 British Mount Everest expedition, Mallory … [Click Below for Full Description]

Fyodor Dostoevsky
William Heinemann, 1912. First english language edition of this iconic title in the exceptionally rare first state (with the full name of the author on the spine as opposed to just the surname as found in later issues). Exceptionally rare with a handful of copies recorded at auction making this much rarer than the later published American first. Originally published in Russky Viestnik (The Russian Messenger) from 1879-80, this first English language edition is translated by Constance Garnett, the first book in her series "The Novels of Fyodor Dostoevsky." 8vo, adverts to verso, blind 'presentation copy' stamp to title-page, original red cloth with decoratively tooled spine, spine slightly faded, a little rubbing and very slight insignificant marking to covers and joints, insignificant adhesion to final page, pages remarkably clean with no foxing or inscriptions. Doyle, A. Conan
London New York Toronto: Hodder and Stoughton, n.d. [1912]. Original light grey wrappers. First Edition of this unusual Doyle piece, having to do with a murder trial that had taken place in 1909.~Conan Doyle was approached by the defence lawyers who had acted for Oscar Slater, shortly after the trial [Slater had been found guilty]. He was at first reluctant to involve himself in the case, but once he realized how serious a miscarriage of justice had occurred, he did everything in his power. He visited Glasgow and Edinburgh, examined some of the witnesses, and sifted the rumours. [G&G]~After additional evidence came to light, the case was reopened in March 1914, but a secret inquiry held the following month did not overturn the verdict, and the war then intervened. Later, Doyle (and others) continued to campaign on Slater's behalf, and further proceedings ultimately resulted in Slater's release from prison -- but not until 1927.~The volume includes six photographs (there are none in the US edition): of Slater, of the victim (a woman), of a duplicate of the murder weapon (a hammer), of the courtroom, the two of the scene of the crime. Near-fine (minor soil and edge-wear). This UK edition in wrappers, published in August 1912, is much scarcer than the (hardbound) US edition of six months later. Green & Gibson B11a. Housed in a felt-lined morocco-backed clamshell case. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

CROWLEY, Aleister & D'ESTE STURGES, Mary] Frater Perdurabo & Soror Virakam.
Wieland ND (1912 & 1913), London. Volume I is the second issue of the First Edition, with the publisher's address given as "33 Avenue Studios, South Kensington." Volume II is the first (and only) issue of the First Edition. Both small, square octavos (5 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches), Original treated paper (Vol. I),and paper-covered boards (Vol. II), treated cloth spines.Vol. II with paper title-label on spine (none issued on Volume I) Vol. I: x + 94pp (+2pp. adverts), 2 photographic illus, & Vol II: viii + 186pp, b&w illustrations, errata slip tipped in facing title page. The first two Volumes, complete in themselves, on mysticism and 'magick' respectively - of Crowley's magnum opus, Book 4 (all issued thus). The third vol. (on the Book of the Law) did not appear as such during Crowley's lifetime, the fourth Vol. (also called Magick in Theory and Practice) came out in different format in 1929. A complete edition of the work did not appear until well after Crowley's death. In their distinctive 'flashing bindings.' An unusual example of the book as talismanic object, with the design by Crowley reflecting the (itself symbolic) number 4 (a theme carried through from the square shape; 4 equal sides; to the original prices, 4 groats and 4 tanners respectively). As far as is known, only 500 copies of Part II were printed. Vol. I: there is a light bump to the upper corner of Vol. I and its boards are a little darkened and rubbed, otherwise it is a VG + copy. Vol. II: as often with this fragile volume it shows some wear and tear. The paper boards are rubbed and rounded at the corners, and th … [Click Below for Full Description]

Original Vintage Real Photo Divided Postcard circa 1912 with unique view of the Iredell, North Carolina, County Roads CHAIN GANG. Black and white convicts in prison stripes, some with visible leg chains, perched on a group of wagon carts pulled by a tractor with sunshade shielding a superintendent. This is among the rarest views of Iredell County, North Carolina, and a very rare American postcard. Unused, has the inked notation of the family member "This is part of our County Chain Gang" on the back. Excellent condition. A remarkable photograph. From the collection of an old Iredell County, North Carolina family, descents of the Allison and Long Families. From Reconstruction to the mid 20th century the use of prisoner chain gangs engaged in hard labor building and maintaining public roads was a common practice in North Carolina and throughout the South. Established by law as a means of punishment, working on a chain gang became the standard sentence for vagrancy and petty crime, although in North Carolina it was also the punishment for any able-bodied male prisoner serving a sentence of up to ten years. North Carolina's state government refused to oversee road construction and left the administration of chain gangs to county governments, leaving prisoners vulnerable to suffer at the hands of brutal overseers. Over time, the image of men, many of them African Americans, shackled with leg irons to prevent their escape came to symbolize the cruelties of imprisonment as well as the injustices associated with racial and economic inequality in the segregated South.

Mallory, George
London: Smith, Elder & Co., 1912. 1st Edition. ix,337pp. The letters are written on both sides of two sheets of 10"x 8" paper in black ink and folded once. The date on the first letter is January 30th, 1915 and the second letter has not been dated. Age toning to both letters--more so on the first--but overall in very good, legible condition. Overall, the book and letters are in clean condition. A fascinating association copy of Mallory's book with the two letters written by Mallory to Edward Hilton Young. Mallory was an English mountaineer who took part in the first three British expeditions to Mount Everest in the early 1920s--during the 1924 British Mount Everest expedition, Mallory and his climbing partner Andrew "Sandy" Irvine both disappeared on the North-East ridge during their attempt to make the first ascent of the world's highest mountain. Mallory studied at Cambridge, which is where he became good friends with members of the future Bloomsbury Group including James Strachey, Lytton Strachey, Rupert Brooke, John Maynard Keynes, and Duncan Grant--several of these people are mentioned in the letters. A very beautifully produced work. Contains the four poems about Lincoln collected in the 1881 edition of Leaves of Grass. Whitman? s infatuation with Lincoln began in 1861 with Lincoln? s determined stance to overcome the Union defeat at Bull Run. His esteem for the president grew, as their positions on slavery and disunion were very similar. Whitman called Lincoln? The Redeemer President of the United States. ? In these elegies, he never mentions Lincoln by name, to emphasize Lincoln? s embodiment of the American people. With seven additional poems about the Civil War. A near fine copy in a plain jacket with the title on the spine. Some wear and superficial tears to spine at head and heel, else fine. Fine. [Attributes: Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

EINSTEIN, Albert.
Leipzig: Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1912. First edition, extremely rare author's presentation offprints (with 'Überreicht vom Verfasser' (Presented by the Author) printed on front wrappers), and the copies of Einstein's son Hans Albert, of Einstein's formulation of the photochemical equivalence law. This is a fundamental principle relating to chemical reactions induced by light, which states that for every quantum of radiation (photon) absorbed, one molecule of the affected substance reacts. Einstein's formulation, founded on thermodynamics, marks the first application of quantum theory to photochemistry; it was one of his last significant contributions to quantum theory. The photochemical equivalence law is also known as the Einstein-Stark law: the German experimental physicist Johannes Stark had published his own derivation of it in 1908, but at that time Stark did not agree with Einstein's views on the corpuscular nature of radiation, writing: "In my opinion it is not necessary to postulate a discontinuous structure of the radiation energy, which flows with the velocity of light in ether" (quoted in Mehra & Rechenberg, p. 103). OCLC lists only two locations (King's College London and Swiss National Library for the main work, the latter only for the 'Nachtrag'); no other copy in auction records (neither of these papers were in Einstein's own reference collection of offprints in the Richard Green Library).</p> <p><em>Provenance</em>: Hans Albert Einstein (1904-1973), Swiss-American engineer and educator, and the second child and first son of Albert Einstein and Mileva Mari … [Click Below for Full Description]

WEGENER, Alfred
Justus Perthes, Gotha, 1912. First edition, journal issues in the original printed wrappers. "Wegener is remembered today as the originator and one of the chief proponents of the theory of continental drift, which he conceived after being struck by the apparent correspondence in the shapes of the coastlines on the west and east sides of the Atlantic, and supported with extensive research on the geological and paleontological correspondences between the two sides. He postulated that 200 million years ago there existed a supercontinent ('Pangaea'), which began to break up during the Mesozoic era due to the cumulative effects of the 'Eötvös force,' which drives continents towards the equator, and the tidal attraction of the sun and moon, which drags the earth's crust westward with respect to its interior. Wegener's drift mechanism was later shown to be untenable; it has been replaced by the idea of convection currents in the earth's upper mantle. Wegener's first publication on continental drift appeared in three issues of Petermanns Mitteilung in April-June 1912; however, Wegener's theory attracted little interest until 1919, when he published the second edition of his treatise Die Entstehung der Kontinente und Ozeane. Between 1919 and 1928 continental drift was "the focus of much controversy and debate, but the theory afterwards fell into obscurity, not to be revived until the discovery of new paleomagnetic evidence in the 1950s" (Norman). Wegener (1880-1930) died at the early age of 50 on an arctic expedition at Eismitte in Greenland. ABPC/RBH record no copies of this import … [Click Below for Full Description]
