WOMEN'S SUFFRAGE.)
[London:] The Woman's Press, [1912/13]. Octavo. Original grey printed wrappers, wire-stitched. Spine chipped, resulting in a little loss at ends, front joint starting, rear wrapper neatly laid onto final leaf at gutter, adhesive and rust marks visible at gutter of half-title, contents toned with some faint foxing to endleaves, overall a very good copy. Advertisements for the WSPU on the inside front cover, and for Votes for Women on the rear cover. First edition of this scarce collection of speeches given by Emmeline Pankhurst, Emmeline Pethick-Lawrence, Frederick William Pethick-Lawrence, and Tim Healy (counsel for the defence) during their trial for conspiracy. Having first appeared in Votes for Women, they were reprinted and published here "in rather more permanent form" by the WSPU's publishing arm, the Woman's Press (p. 3). OCLC and Library Hub trace just seven copies in institutions worldwide, only one of which is outside the UK (Aletta Institute for Women's History in the Netherlands; the others are in the BL, LSE, Senate House, London Library, NLW, and University of Exeter). The British and London Libraries suggest a publication date of 1913, and the rest suggest 1912. "Perhaps the zenith of suffragette performance in the courtroom drama came with the May 1912 trial of WSPU leaders at the Old Bailey for conspiracy to incite violence" (Mayhall, p. 78). Indicted on a total of fifty-four counts in conspiring to organise the mass window-breaking protests on 21 November 1911 and 1 and 4 March 1912, Emmeline Pankhurst and the Pethick-Lawrences were arrested on 5 March 191 … [Click Below for Full Description]

San Francisco, A.M. Robertson, 1912. First Edition. First Impression. Hardback. A lovely copy of an early Smith work, SIGNED by the author without inscription to the half-title. Gathers together 55 of his poems. One of the so-called big three of the Weird Tales magazine, Smith was fairly prolific in his poetry and short stories, though only published one novel-length work which remained unpublished until 2002 [Hippocampus Press]. The Star-Treader is regarded as one of his better works. Slight edge wear to the jacket, but still remarkable condition given the age (the jacket is printed on nice, thick paper though). One hand-written correction to the first poem, Nero. A wonderful opportunity to own an early piece of Smith and the whole weird tales legacy. [6458, Hyraxia Books].All items will be packed in bubble-wrap and either a cardboard book-wrap or a box where appropriate. Items over £200 will be shipped fully tracked, insured and will require a signature. If you'd like this service on cheaper items please utilise the expedited shipping. All photos are of the actual item for sale. Further photos can be provided. Returns accepted; buyer pays for return unless we're at fault. [Hyraxia Books, 6458].

Several handwritten letters are laid in the journal from some of Abbott's pupils. Each one emphasizes all the good things the girls have done and all the rules they haven't broken. Others discuss less savory topics such as leaving in the night, gossiping, being late to class, missing out on chapel, and other small misdemeanors that c … [Click Below for Full Description]

Neat ink ownership to flyleaf. Very clean within, binding bright with a little sunning to spine, minor fraying to ends and a couple of little nicks/dents to same. Shows well. UHDE Wilhelm
UHDE Wilhelm. Galerie Bernheim jeune & Cie, Paris 1912, 12 x 15,5 cm, stapled First edition of the catalogue of the work of Henri Rousseau, known as "le Douanier" presented to Galerie Bernheim Jeune & Cie from 28 October to 9 November 1912.Rare and very beautiful copy of this brochure of the exhibition of Henri Rousseau's personal works, which greatly contributed to the recognition of the artist after his death two years earlier. During his lifetime, Henri Rousseau never had the opportunity to exhibit his works individually. In turn, both discredited and acclaimed at the Salondes Independants, to which he contributed for many years, he died relatively alone in September 1910. In the months that followed his death, three exhibitions dedicated to his work were organised in New York, at the Salon des Independants and at the famous Galerie Bernheim Jeune in Paris, a legendary place of French avant-garde painting for half a century. This rare Galerie Bernheim-Jeune catalogue is prefaced by William Uhde, organiser of the exhibition and author of a monograph on the artist published the previous year. This retrospective presented 50 paintings and drawings by Henri Rousseau: "One of the events of the season [...] is the superb exhibition of Henri Rousseau at Berheim-Jeune - such true beauty. I am extremely enthusiastic about these beautiful things - a portrait of a child standing is surely one of the most truly beautiful pictures to be seen anywhere" (letter from Marsden Hartley to the art dealer Alfred Stieglitz, 30 October 1912).Illustrated brochure comprising reproductions of 4 of … [Click Below for Full Description]
