Among the many subjects featured here are schools, hospitals, orphanages, public housing, gasworks, tram depots, abbatoirs, and administrative buildings, focusing on the progressive aspects of the city and offering a panoramic view of the Russian capital at the dawn of the 20th century. Included here are two views of Tolstoy's house (plates 51 and 52), today the Tolstoy Estate-Museum, bearing the caption "acquis par la ville" (acquired by the city), nicely dating these images to after 15 November 1912, when the Moscow municipality bought the writer's home with all its furniture for 125,000 roubles, and with the intention that the courtyard should accommodat … [Click Below for Full Description]

Thetford, Vermont: The Vermonter Press, 1912. Unbound. Good. Large broadside. Measuring 12" x 19". Printed in red on thin paper. Small chips and some dampstains mostly in the lower right-hand corner, good or better. A poster from the earliest days of the Campfire Girls. The group was started in Thetford, Vermont in 1910, but wasn't formally organized until 1912. According to Wikipedia: "In 1910, young girls in Thetford, Vermont, watched their brothers, friends, and schoolmates - all Boy Scouts - practice their parts in the community's 150th anniversary, which would be celebrated the following summer. The pageant's organizer, William Chauncey Langdon, promised the girls that they, too, would have an organized role in the pageant, although no organization such as Boy Scouts existed then for girls. Langdon consulted with Mrs. Charles Farnsworth, preceptress of Horace Mann School near Thetford, Vermont. Both approached Luther Halsey Gulick, M.D. about creating a national organization for girls. Gulick introduced the idea to friends, among them G. Stanley Hall, Ernest Thompson Seton, and James West, executive secretary of the Boy Scouts. After many discussions and help from Gulick and his wife Charlotte, Langdon named the group of Thetford girls the Camp Fire Girls." Apparently the first Festival was held in 1911, celebrating the discovery of fire, thus the "Repeated!" in the title. Surely one of the earliest separately printed references, and perhaps the first broadside, referring to the group. *OCLC* locates a single copy of a four-page songbook for the 1912 event (Brown Uni … [Click Below for Full Description]

McBride, Nast & Co, 1912. First edition thus. Hardcover. 8vo. Red pictorial cloth. Minor bumping to spine ends and corners; sparse toning/foxing to pages. About near fine. 267pp. New. Early work featuring an independent and successful disabled protagonist, first serialized in 1908. A first-person narrative, ostensibly by an anonymous young woman, recounting her ambitions and achievements following the loss of one leg in early childhood and the consequent physical and social restrictions imposed on her. Presented as nonfiction and received as such by contemporary reviewers, with the publisher responding to one enthusiastic contemporary reader: "Our contract with the author especially provides that we are not to reveal the identity, and we cannot give the names of any other books by this author without violating our agreement." ("Travel," Jan. 1913.) Another memoirist, however, in her own account of life with a similar disability, wrote: "The book proved to be the bastard brain child of a big and bouncing and very jolly New York businessman and writer. He does use crutches, having a pair of unreliable knees [...] but he is definitely not a fascinating little feminine hopper. Although he admits openly to a new legitimate book every year or so, he never confesses his paternity to THE GIRL WITH THE ROSEWOOD CRUTCHES, that poor love child of his careless youth." ("Out on a Limb," Louise Baker, 1946.) Despite the book's sentimentality and inspirational appeal, its treatment of disability is engagingly modern and matter-of-fact in many respects: as the heroine's need for crutches i … [Click Below for Full Description]

Fountains In The Sand: Rambles Among The Oases Of Tunisia. London, Martin Secker, 1912. First edition. 8vo., 251 pp. including index. Illustrated with 16 photographs. Original gilt stamped blue cloth covered in clear, heavy acetate wrap. General shelf-wear: corners bumped; text-block NF but for bit of spotting to block-edges, couple lower corners creased[lightly bumped]; housed in contemporary brown slipcase exhibiting scaling, general wear. Important Presentation/Association Copy; front flyleaf bearing handwritten emendations and recommendations in blue ink from Douglas to his friend Ralph Straus; a full-page inscription in Douglas' hieroglyphic hand: "To his friend Ralph Straus/ who has never read this book and probably never will, and who ought in every case to have waited for the 2nd edition due next February not only because it is cheaper, but because some of the more manifest absurdities of this first one- including about 83 "but's" in the text: the rottenest word in the English language, save when employed for conversational purposes- are therein so [?]; and a better index provided. The original MS of this book was nearly twice as long, but a literary friend, as usual, persuaded me to cut out all the best chapters- those, that is, which contained references to a certain fictitious "woman" of whom he disappears on moral grounds, and whom I had artfully threaded through the narrative, to make it read a little more human and exciting. San Francisco, A.M. Robertson, 1912. First Edition. First Impression. Hardback. A lovely copy of an early Smith work, SIGNED by the author without inscription to the half-title. Gathers together 55 of his poems. One of the so-called big three of the Weird Tales magazine, Smith was fairly prolific in his poetry and short stories, though only published one novel-length work which remained unpublished until 2002 [Hippocampus Press]. The Star-Treader is regarded as one of his better works. Slight edge wear to the jacket, but still remarkable condition given the age (the jacket is printed on nice, thick paper though). One hand-written correction to the first poem, Nero. A wonderful opportunity to own an early piece of Smith and the whole weird tales legacy. Arber, Agnes
Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1912. First edition. Original publisher's cloth binding with title to spine and front board. Top edge gilt. Bookplate of the Medievalist Allan Heywood Bright to front pastedown, with accompanying Autograph Letter Signed by the author to Bright tipped in on the front endpaper. With the exception of offsetting to the front and rear pastedowns, the present is a pleasing, neat, and square copy containing the frontis and all 21 illustrated plates. A leader in the history of herbals, Arber was a fellow of the Linnean Society and a lecturer at Cambridge University in her early career prior to her marriage in 1909. Rather than retiring science for domesticity, Arber established a home laboratory and commenced on the present work, largely considered one of the most important historic studies on herbalism. "Arber's research centered on the form of plants, both living and fossil specimens, for its own sake, and the light it could shed on subjects such as classification and evolution. The main body of her work (which in total included seventy scientific articles and four morphology books) was on the major groups of flowering plants. Her publications were characterized by distinctive diagrams and a thorough grounding in the history and philosophy of botany...The philosophy of plant form not only underpinned Arber's laboratory, but was also reflected in a range of historical and philosophical publications which have had wider and more enduring impact. The first of these was Herbals" (ODNB). Drawing not only on established science but also the views … [Click Below for Full Description]

Dostoevsky, Fyodor
William Heinemann, London, 1912. First edition in English of Dostoevsky's masterpiece, described by Freud as "the most magnificent novel ever written." Octavo, original cloth. Translated into English by Constance Garnett. In very good condition, name to the front free endpaper. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Scarce and desirable, with only a handful appearing at auction in past 80 years. Published less than four months before his death, Dostoevsky's masterpiece The Brothers Karamazov has come to be considered one of the supreme achievements in the worldwide literary canon. Set in 19th-century Russia, the philosophical and spiritual drama enters deeply into mankind's universal struggles with morality, faith, reason and free will. Centered around the greedy and negligent Fyodor Karamazov and his three sons, the harrowing tale relays the details of a long-awaited family reunion which ends tragically in Fyodor's murder. One of the most widely influential pieces of literature ever published, the work has attracted a range of admirers including Albert Einstein, Martin Heidegger, Franz Kafka, Albert Camus, and Sigmund Freud who referred to it as "the most magnificent novel ever written." In an essay on the novel written after the Russian Revolution and the First World War, Nobel Prize-winning author Hermann Hesse described Dostoevsky as not a "poet" but a "prophet" "No writer has been more important to the understanding and/or reception of Russian literature in the West than Fedor Dostoevsky" (The Cambridge Companion to Modern Russian Culture, p.184). Peking Club, Peking China, 1912. Small archive of six items, four of which are approximately 8 x 11 inches; one is 8 .5 x 14, and one is 7.5 inches square, pasted to a slightly larger pages. Overall good to very good condition: some chipping at edges, one item with an old tape repair. In the early decades of the twentieth century, the Peking Club was the center of social activity in the Legation Quarter, a part of the city that housed embassies and was frequented by foreign diplomats and soldiers, scholars, and artists. The Club offered social activities such as bridge games, tea parties, and dances, and provided a variety of recreational facilities, including a swimming pool and tennis courts that were flooded in winter to make an ice skating rink. But perhaps the most favored activity of Westerners in Peking was horse racing. Many Westerners owned race horses, and many more enjoyed attending the races. There were two major race meetings a year held by the Peking Club. This archive includes three items relating to the 1912 Spring Race Meeting, including two notices to the membership about the upcoming event and a four-page program given to attendees. According to Heywood Brown, a writer who was in attendance, it was quite a scene, with foreigners arriving by train, rickshaw, auto, donkeys or horses ? and Chinese on carts, wheelbarrows and camels. There were 21 ponies and 7 races each day, which are all listed in the program. The racing ponies were all Mongolian, a hearty breed, enabling some to run more than one race each day. Chinese were not allowed to bet, so they often … [Click Below for Full Description]

Paris: Galerie Bernheim jeune & Cie, 1912. Fine. Galerie Bernheim jeune & Cie, Paris 1912, 12x15,5cm, agrafé. - Galerie Bernheim jeune & Cie, Paris 1912, 12 x 15,5 cm, stapled First edition of the catalogue of the work of Henri Rousseau, known as ""le Douanier"" presented to Galerie Bernheim Jeune & Cie from 28 October to 9 November 1912. Rare and very beautiful copy of this brochure of the exhibition of Henri Rousseau's personal works, which greatly contributed to the recognition of the artist after his death two years earlier. During his lifetime, Henri Rousseau never had the opportunity to exhibit his works individually. In turn, both discredited and acclaimed at the Salon des Indépendants, to which he contributed for many years, he died relatively alone in September 1910. In the months that followed his death, three exhibitions dedicated to his work were organised in New York, at the Salon des Indépendants and at the famous Galerie Bernheim Jeune in Paris, a legendary place of French avant-garde painting for half a century. This rare Galerie Bernheim-Jeune catalogue is prefaced by William Uhde, organiser of the exhibition and author of a monograph on the artist published the previous year. This retrospective presented 50 paintings and drawings by Henri Rousseau: ""One of the events of the season [...] is the superb exhibition of Henri Rousseau at Berheim-Jeune - such true beauty. I am extremely enthusiastic about these beautiful things - a portrait of a child standing is surely one of the most truly beautiful pictures to be seen anywhere"" (letter from Marsden Ha … [Click Below for Full Description]

1912. Every roycroft collecter can find a vase, or bookends or a rare piece of furniture, but hardly any collectors will ever have anything like this. This letter is addressed to "ing". Elbert Hubbard made nicknames for everybody and this was most likely a family member like his son or another Roycroft artist. The letter mentions John Hoyle, who is well known as working in the print shop. The letter was written February 24, 1912, from the grand hotel in Manhattan, NYC. Hubbard was most likely on a business trip. This letter was in one family's possession for over 50 years. This is a museum quality piece you may never see again. The only thing to really mention on the Condition is the stamp is missing. And the wooden frame has a small piece of the wood venere missing, this doesnt effect the letter itself at all. A stamp collector probably removed the stamp decades ago. This letter was written 3 years before Hubbard died. Please ask an questions if any, all sales are final, no returns or refunds, thanks. In the last photo i wrote down what i believe the letter says. Im not great at reading or writing cursive so you may have a different interpretation. Please make your own judgement, as all sales are final.

BULLOCK, Shan F.
Maunsel & Co, 1912. First edition; original green cloth lettered in black and original dust jacket. Frontispiece photograph of Thomas Andrews and five other plates. Inscribed by Thomas Andrews snr, on the half title 'Mr David Brennan from his friend Thomas Andrews'. Thomas Andrews, Jr. (7 February 1873 15 April 1912) was a British businessman and shipbuilder. He was managing director and head of the drafting department of the shipbuilding company Harland and Wolff. As the naval architect in charge of the plans for the ocean liner RMS Titanic, he was travelling on board the vessel during her transatlantic maiden voyage in 1912. He perished along with more than 1,500 others when the ship sank after hitting an iceberg. His body was never recovered. In 1884, he attended the Royal Belfast Academical Institution and in 1889 he began an aprenticeship at Harland and Wolff where his uncle, the Viscount Pirrie, was part owner. He spent three months in the joiners' shop, followed by a month in the cabinetmakers' and then a further two months working on the ships. The last eighteen months of his five-year apprenticeship were spent in the drawing office. In 1901, Andrews, after working his way up through the many departments of the company, became the manager of the construction works. In 1907, Andrews was appointed the managing director and head of the drafting department at Harland and Wolff. Andrews began to oversee the plans for a new superliner, the RMS Olympic for the White Star Line. The Olympic and its sister ship the Titanic, which began construction in 1909, were designed by W … [Click Below for Full Description]
