Johnson, James Weldon
Boston: Sherman, French & Company, 1912. First edition, first printing. Publisher's ribbed dark maroon cloth stamped in gilt. Near Fine with spine lightly faded and cloth lightly rubbed at the extremities. Staple puncture to front free endpaper. Written while serving as a diplomat, Johnson originally opted to publish this book anonymously out of fear the fear that writing openly about race relations and discrimination would impact his career. Plate volume: [8] pp., 58 photographic plates, numbered 29 to 86, each with associated key overlay, and one folding map. Original publisher's cloth, spine and upper board lettered in red (very light spotting to boards), original green endpapers. Text and plates clean and bright, tissue-paper overlays browned as usual. An exceptionally well preserved set of this rare lunar atlas. ---- Ashworth, The face of the moon, Linda Hall 27; NDB 13, 44 - THE RARE FIRST ENLARGED EDITION. "Krieger was a gifted draftsman, but he realized that it made little sense to spend time drawing features that the camera could record. So he had the brilliant idea of starting with a low-contrast photograph as a base and adding the finer details by hand at the telescope. The resulting maps of selected craters were not equaled until the U.S. Air Force began issuing its own series of photobased lunar charts in the 1960's. Krieger published the first volume of his drawings in 1898; it contained 28 plates. Due to overwork, his health broke shortly thereafter, and he died before the contemplated second volume could be issued. His manuscripts were taken over by Rudolf König, and the remaining drawings were finally published in 1912." (Ashworth 27). Th … [Click Below for Full Description]

Colonel Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919); [Julian Harris (b.1874)]
[New York: Mail and Express Job Print. 1912.] 16pp. First Edition. Self-titled wraps. A fine copy. At the 1912 Progressive or "Bull Moose" Party Convention a controversy arose over Southern black delegates. While the convention allowed black delegates from Northern States to participate, some in the party and its presidential nominee, Theodore Roosevelt, objected to African-American delegates from the South whom they viewed as unable to effect progressive political change. Roosevelt writes: "I earnestly believe that by appealing to the best white man in the South, the men of justice and vision.and by frankly putting the movement in their hands.we shall create a situation by which the colored men of the South will ultimately get justice." In fact, the Progressive Party's platform-its "Contract With the People"-did not even address civil rights for Blacks. The Negro Question documents Roosevelt's interaction with white progressive Southern journalist Julian Harris and includes Roosevelt's editorial "The Progressive and the Colored Man." With a large "Bull Moose" Party moose stamp on upper cover. Well-represented on OCLC. Scarce to commerce and in such fine condition. Work, p395. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Paris: 1912. [Click Below for Full Description]

Shakespeare, W.
[Supplement to the magazine 'Probuzhdenie' (i.e. Awakening)]. St. Petersburg: Tovarishhestvo hudozhestvennoi pechati, 1912. 32 pp. 30x21 cm. In publisher's illustrated wrappers. In a very good condition. This collection of sonnets gathered the highlights of the early translations. Among all pieces of Shakespeare's heritage the sonnets came last into Russian literature. First Russian translation of sonnets is associated with Ivan Mamuna who had published his variation of "Му mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun" in 1859 (it's presented in this edition). He laid the foundation of immense Russian admiration for sonnets that would start since 1880. Interesting how dissimilar people are within the group of translators. There are poet N. Gerbel', scientist N. Kholodkovsky, statesmen K. Sluchevsky, N. Briansky and F. Chervinsky, Oriental enthusiast E. Ukhtomskii. And apart of them the only female translator L. Vil'kina who was a key figure of Saint Petersburg bogema lifestyle of late 19th - early 20th centuries. The edition contains 28 sonnets published inside the floristic modernist frameworks. Not in the Worldcat.
