Martin, Edward G. [Edward S. Martin, Jr.]
NP: The Author, 1912. Original Manuscript. Hard Cover. Very Good. 6 original Drawings. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. This original illustrated manuscript uniquely documents youthful passion for the evolution of powered flight in that heady period between Bleriot's first flight across the English Channel and the outbreak of World War I. It exudes the excitement of young people whose attention, just before the war, had been captured by pioneering aviators, aeroplane makers, and in this case, the manufacturers of engines. The work is presented and represented as a book, with a Preface beginning "In the preparation of this book it has been my aim to collect and compile true facts about the wonderful Gnome aeroplane engine." It is executed in a careful printed hand in black ink, and features five elaborate ink drawings of the Gnome rotary engine and four leading competitors, as well as a unique opening initial letter incorporating the Rhone. Other motors illustrated and discussed include the Anzani, Panhard "Vee", Darracq two-cylinder opposed, and four-cylinder Benz. From contextual evidence, the work dates from 1912 at the earliest to Summer 1914 at the latest. In addition to the glories of then-current state of aeroplane engines, Martin discusses the exploits of Bleriot, Henri Farman, and Santos Dumont. The author would appear to have been perhaps 12 to 15 years of age, most likely American, opening with the claim that the Gnome was originally invented in America under the name "Adams-Farwell" (a claim still circulating today). The book is housed in what appears to be t … [Click Below for Full Description]

GREY, Zane
Long Key, FL, 29 Jan. 1912. Letter. Folds from mailing, still about Fine, with envelope. A one-page AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED as "Doc" to his wife "Dolly" with fine content on Florida East Coast Hotel Co./Long Key Fishing Camp stationery with envelope. In full: "It sure is hunting my forgotten birthday! Let's see. I'll be 38. Gee! I feel old. But maybe its this damned languorous climate. I've been eating too much, also. There isn't any news. The sun shines, the winds blow, and time flies. I'll be home soon again. I have not been fishing yet. This matter of work begins to drag on me. If I don't work I'm unhappy. Yesterday I wrote some of the scenario of the play. I've somehow lost confidence since I read that play book. But things will come to a head soon. I'm glad for this past week. I seem to be my old self again. Aren't you glad? I'd appreciate a letter from you occasionally. You'll be mad when you see that all this fat [?] letter is not a love letter to you. With love to all, Doc." Superb letter mentioning his two loves--fishing and writing--addressed to his other love.

[William Salomon] / Lillian Baynes Griffin
[William Salomon], 1912. Quarto. First Edition. The only book of photos by forgotten New York photographer Lillian Baynes Griffin, who was featured in Harper's Weekly, the New York Press, New York Times, Vanity Fair, and Vogue, and famously convinced royalty and plutocrats to pose for her alone. Trained at the New York Institute for Artist Artisans, Griffin ventured into photography despite, what she referred to as, the 'little opportunity' for women in the trade. This tome contains 56 photos by Griffin detailing Salomon's home at 1020 Fifth Avenue. Originally the home of Richard Arnold, it was purchased around 1900 by Salomon, who was Chairman of the Board of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. Salomon spent many years creating essentially a new and more impressive home, buying two adjacent lots and greatly expanding what was already, by the standards of most, a mansion. Half-bound in Japan Vellum over paper-covered boards. This copy has a discreetly replaced spine in Japanese tissue. It is mildly ex-library with a few small marks to the preliminary pages. There are no marks at all to the 56 photogravure plates. Very Good binding. [Attributes: First Edition]

The Sierra Buttles Mine operated from the time of the California Gold Rush until 1912. Gold-bearing quartz ledges were discovered in 1850, and first developed by the Reis brothers of San Francisco. By 1866 two mills were processing the ore produced from three ledges. An English syndicate purchased the mine by 1870, and by 1882 the mine had produced over 7 million dolllars of gold. In 1904 E. A and J. O. Hayes bought the operation and built a cyanide plant to enhance gold recovery. Ruben Dario . Dario from his youth was interested and wrote plays, as a playwright was always great, in 1912 he was writing to premiere in Spain La princesa esta triste , his desire is to make poetic theater in the manner of Zorrilla, that is, melting the lyric prestige with the scenic interest and surpassing the shooting to the fictitious situation that breaks the unity of the subject. This letter is studied by José Marcos Carioni when he deal with this aspect of the literary life of Rubén Darío, points out that the author of the release of La Nación is García Velloso, and "we also know," he says, that he would collaborate in the work, as emerges from the The poet's letter, written from Adrogué, recommending his friend, does not neglect what is his absolute autocracy: that is, theater and details, because, undeniably, he is the only one.
