        L'unita'. Problemi della vita italiana, anno I, n. 1, 16 dicembre 1911 - anno I, n. 55, 27 dicembre 1912

Stab. Tip. Aldino, 1912-13. Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens

London: Hodder & Stoughton [1912]. [1912]. Lovely green gilt-decorated cloth, some fading to the spine, which is a little bumped and rubbed. 1916 gift inscription on the verso of the frontis. . Very Good. Gilt-decorated Cloth. 1912. 4to..

        Hrad smrti

Vinohrady (Prague): The author 1912 - Quarto 25x18 cm, wrappers, 51 pages. Cover design, decorations and 11 original color woodcuts by Josef Váchal (frontispiece, title, 9 plates with tissue guards, and original woodcut label on cover). Edition of 500 copies. Deml (1878-1961) was a renegade Catholic priest who hung on the edges of the church and is recognized as an important author in Czech modernism. From 1907 he contributed to Sursum with symbolist work and became a close friend of Váchal for a while. He was early to recognize Vachal's visionary genius. This was a temporary alliance; both parties had difficult, volatile temperaments. Hrad smrti (The Castle of Death) is one the most important of their collaborations. Deml was always the political outsider, a cassandra in perpetual quarrel and trouble with the government and the Church. His work, laced with fantasy, foreshadowed Czech surrealism and is now recognized as an important predecessor. Josef Vachal (1884-1969) is the Czech William Blake. A painter, author, print-maker and book printer, he celebrated an uninhibited spirituality, possessed acerbic wit and critical temperament which he used to rail against the hypocrisy and darkness of convention. This is one of Váchal’s important early works; it was his biggest book commission to date. Three copies found in North American libraries of this title with the Váchal plates.         Il Tatuaggio. Nella Antropologia e Nella Medicina Legale [Bound With] L'imene in medicina legale

Bologna: Nicola Zanichelli, 1912. First edition. 8vo, 64 [3] pp + 108 [3] pp. Rebound at a later date in half crushed red morocco over marbled boards, raised in five bands at the spine, with gilt titles and florets. Both works bound together with the original wraps preserved. The first work illustrated with 27 illustrations in the text, two from photographs, and the second work with 36 figures (drawings and tables). Text in Italian. A beautifully bound example of Gurierri's scarce early study of tattoos and tattooing, bound with his medical work on the hymen and virginity. Gurrieri (1862-1944), a coroner and director of legal medicine at the Institute of Legal Medicine at the University of Bologna, was an early disciple of Lombroso, and his work on the tattoo focuses especially on documentation of it among criminals, the insane, and prostitutes. OCLC locates only two holdings of the first work, and three of the latter.

SHIPPING CASUALTIES (LOSS OF THE STEAMSHIP "TITANIC.") REPORT OF A FORMAL INVESTIGATION INTO THE CIRCUMSTANCES ATTENDING THE FOUNDERING ON 15th APRIL, 1912, OF THE BRITISH STEAMSHIP "TITANIC" OF LIVERPOOL, AFTER STRIKING ICE.

London. 1912. - [2],74pp. Folio. Dbd. Minor wear. Very good. In a blue cloth folder. Uncommon first edition of the official report on the sinking of the Titanic, providing a full accounting of the ship's technical specifications, its journey, and the disaster which took it to the bottom of the North Atlantic. The report gives an account of the damage, saying that water rushed in at such a rate that "the ship's pumps could not possibly have coped, so that the damage done to these five compartments alone inevitably sealed the doom of the ship." The account of rescue gives a breakdown of passengers and crew who made it into the lifeboats: "The real difficulty in dealing with the question of the boats is to find the explanation of so many of them leaving the ship with comparatively few persons in them." Statistical analysis, delineated herein, shows what was to be expected - women and children had the highest survival rate, while first and second class passengers had better luck in getting into the boats than did those passengers in steerage. The report makes a point, however, of stating unequivocally that third class passengers were not treated unfairly, and that those steerage passengers who spoke English (and therefore, presumably, understood what was going on) were mostly saved. A fascinating and detailed accounting of this most significant of shipping disasters.

THE LIFE OF CESARE BORGIA [inscribed]

1912 - [inscribed by Sabatini] A History and Some Criticisms. With a Coloured Frontispiece and Sixteen Other Illustrations in Half-tone. London: Stanley Paul & Co., n.d.[1912]. 32 pp ads, undated (but with this title listed second in the list of new announcements, and with 1910 and 1911 cited elsewhere). Original black cloth lettered in gilt, with dust jacket. First Edition of this very early historical work by Sabatini, about a decade before he hit it big with "swashbuckling" tales such as SCARAMOUCHE and CAPTAIN BLOOD. Born of an Italian father and an English mother, and educated in Portugal and Switzerland, Sabatini (1875-1950) was fluent in five languages by the time he was eighteen; he would soon have a position in the Intelligence Department of the War Office during the Great War.~The Sabatini website cites a 48-page ad catalogue, but we think it is quite possible that this catalogue may precede: the only dates appearing in this catalogue are 1910 and 1911, and the inscription (below) is dated January 1912 (the month of publication). This is a near-fine copy, the only real flaw being some small holes in the cloth at the joints (one fore-corner also shows some wear); included is the 1912 dust jacket (red printed in black), in good-to-very good condition (a large chip at the bottom of the front panel, other minor edge-wear but nothing affecting print, spine slightly faded).~THIS IS AN INSCRIBED PRESENTATION COPY, with the author's ink inscription on the title verso "To Herbert Jarman from Rafael Sabatini London 17 Jany 1912". Jarman was an actor and occasional assistant producer on the London stage -- for example, not long before this inscription, Jarman had starred as Louis XIII in the 1911 stage production of "Bardelys the Magnificent," adapted by Sabatini and Henry Hamilton from Sabatini's 1906 novel of the same title (our thanks to Sabatini biographer Ruth Heredia for this information). This early Sabatini title is scarce; in dust jacket it is very scarce; and inscribed it is extremely scarce. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

The etching was not issued separately. Illustrated throughout with 434 etchings, each with the original measurements, date of the plate, number printed and other general notes by Frank Rinder. Some occasasional light offsetting from the plates to the text pages opposite but generally it is faint where it occurs. Endpapers a bit browned but overall a very good clean and tidy copy in the publishers original delux binding of beige cloth on the boards with a white vellum spine, lettered and ruled in gilt. A few minor spots to the vellum but it is still clean and white and the gilt still bright and vibrant. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. A very good copy of this beautifully illustrated and well produced book.

EXCEPTIONAL AND UNPRECEDENTED ! Trees bending - ORIGINAL PAINTING BY "THE DANISH GIRL"

      - Trees bending. Signed E. Wegener 1912. Sketch on the reverse. Oil on wood plate. 22 x 27 cm.  Provenance: Directly from the artist and hence by descend in the family of the present owner.A rare original work by the Danish artist, a transgender woman who was one of the first identifiable recipients of sex reassignment surgery. Elbe was born Einar Magnus Andreas Wegener and was a successful painter under that name. She also presented as Lili (sometimes spelled Lily) and was publicly introduced as Einar's sister. After successfully transitioning in 1930, she made a legal name change to Lili Ilse Elvenes and stopped painting altogether. She died from complications of one of her sex reassignment surgeries.  Her autobiography, Man into Woman, was posthumously published in 1933 and in 2000, David Ebershoff wrote The Danish Girl, a fictionalized account of the life of Lili Elbe, which was an international bestseller and was translated into a dozen languages. In 2015 it was made into a successful film, also called The Danish Girl, produced by Gail Mutrux and Neil LaBute and starring Eddie Redmayne as Elbe.
