Livre des Mille Nuits et Une Nuit

1912. (ARABIAN NIGHTS) MARDRUS, J.C. Le Livre des Mille Nuits et Une Nuit. Traduction Littérale et Complète du Texte Arabe par le Dr. J.C. Mardrus. Paris: Charpentier et Fasquelle, 1912-1919. Sixteen volumes. Octavo, contemporary half brown morocco, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, marbled boards and endpapers, top edges gilt. $3200.Limited edition of MardrusÂ’ colorful French translation of the Arabian Nights, very handsomely bound. The stories now known collectively as Alf Layla wa-Layla (One Thousand Nights and a Night)-the earliest manuscript of which dates from the 14th century-“have become part of the common heritage of Western and world literature” (Barron, Fantasy and Horror 2-4). Antoine Galland produced the first European translation of the Nights in the early 18th century, in French. His rendition “retained a strong hold on the affections of his countrymen, and it was not until the eve of the 20th century that a retranslation into French was attemptedÂ… MardrusÂ’ translation (which was really more of a loose adaptation) caught the literary mood of the timeÂ… [His] version of the Arabian tales was a belated product of fin-de-siècle taste, a portrait of a fantasy Orient, compounded of opium reveries, jeweled dissipation, lost paradises, melancholy opulence and odalisques pining in gilded cagesÂ… T.E. Lawrence [described] the Mardrus version as ‘Much the best version of the Nights in any language” (Irwin, 36-9). Comprises volumes from several identical limited editions, each limited to 75 sets printed on Holland paper and 25 sets printed on Japanese paper, released by the publisher between 1912 and 1919; this set is printed on Holland paper. Text in French. See Clute & Grant, 51. A beautiful set in fine condition.

        Peter Pan Portfolio

1912. (RACKHAM, Arthur). The Peter Pan Portfolio by Arthur Rackham, from Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens by J. M. Barrie. London: Hodder & Stoughton, [1912]. Elephant folio (measuring 19-1/2 by 21-1/2 inches), original three-quarter vellum laced at spine with later silk ribbon, green cloth boards, publisherÂ’s cardboard box. $18,000.First edition, one of only 500 copies signed by the publisher and the engraver. The only suite of RackhamÂ’s plates to be issued in an oversize portfolio format, with 12 beautiful folio color prints from RackhamÂ’s Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens mounted on card and matted.Published in 1912 to capitalize on the popularity of the stage production Peter and Wendy, this portfolio contains 12 pictures considered to be RackhamÂ’s personal favorites from the 50 original plates he designed for BarrieÂ’s text. Of RackhamÂ’s designs Barrie wrote, “I like best of all the Serpentine with the fairies, and the Peter in his night-gown sitting in the tree. Next I would [sic] the flying Peters, the fairies going to the ball (as in the ‘tiffÂ’ and the fairy on cobweb)— the fairies sewing the leaves with their sense of fun (the gayest thing this) and your treatment of snow” (Ray). Perhaps BarrieÂ’s comments influenced RackhamÂ’s selection, as this portfolio includes all the images he mentioned. This edition was limited to 500 copies signed by the publishers, engravers and printers, numbered 101-600 (this copy is number 448); copies 1-100 were supposed to be signed on every plate by Rackham, but “Mr. Rackham advises that he signed only about twenty” (Latimore and Haskell, 39). The portfolio brought RackhamÂ’s work great public attention, “and ultimately spawned one fine new piece of music,” DebussyÂ’s “Les Fées Sont dÂ’Exquises Danceuses” (Hamilton, 97). With descriptive tissue guards. Originally issued as a gift book in 1906 with 50 color plates but in a much smaller quarto format. Riall, 113. Ray, The Illustrator and the Book in England 329. Plates generally bright and fresh, with occasional light foxing. Interior with expert restoration to title page edges, leaves occasionally remargined at gutter, some mats expertly restored. Vellum with light wear to spine foot, minor bumping to extremities. Expert restoration to scarce original cardboard box. An extremely good copy.

1912. First Edition . Signed. WELLS, H.G. Marriage. London: Macmillan, 1912. Octavo, original green blind-stamped cloth, top edge gilt. $2250.First edition of this novel, inscribed by Wells on the front free endpaper, ""R.A.G. from H.G."" Presented to and from the collection of Wells’ close friend and frequent scientific adviser, Sir Richard Arman Gregory.""The marriage in question is that of Marjorie Pope to Richard Trafford, a scientific researcher who dramatically enters her life when his plane crashes on a vicarage lawn. Marjorie's expensive tastes force Trafford to give up pure research and work in industry. Wealthy but unfulfilled, the couple eventually retreat to a hut in Labrador where Trafford is injured by a lynx, but Marjorie nurses him back to health and the two resolve to embark on a new way of life serving human progress. For this big, serious novel Wells had taken [Henry] James' advice and switched to the third person to increase perspective… James told Wells that the story was interesting, but it was the story of Wells' ongoing life and thought that interested him rather than those of the characters"" (Sherborne, 215-16). With eight pages of publisher's advertisements at rear. Hammond A8. Wells 46. Inscribed to noted British scientist and Wells' lifelong friend Sir Richard Arman Gregory. In Wells' first work of fiction, he dedicated the work to Gregory as his ""dearest friend."" The two met while students at the Normal School of Science in South Kensington. They jointly authored a textbook, Honours Physiography, in 1891. Reportedly, Gregory was the one person with whom Wells never quarreled. A professor of astronomy, Gregory also possessed expertise in physics, chemistry and other disciplines; he wrote several textbooks and eventually assumed the editorship of the journal Nature, to which Wells frequently contributed. The author often turned to Gregory, and to the experts Gregory contacted on Wells' behalf, for insight and encouragement when writing his famous ""scientific romances."" After Wells' death, Gregory worked to establish the H.G. Wells Memorial to preserve public attention to his friend's body of work. Throughout his life Gregory was a passionate advocate for science—""It is necessary to believe in the holiness of scientific work,"" he once declared—and ""an optimist about man's future"" (Horrabin, in New Scientist, April 11, 1957).A clean, fresh, about-fine inscribed association copy.

Fine typed letter signed to Mr Macdona, (Sir Ernest Henry, 1874-1922, British Antarctic Explorer)

1912 - concerning arrangements, presumably for a lecture or talk, "I shall be very pleased to stay with you if it does not put you out, as I must leave by the first train in the morning . perhaps it would be better for me to stay at a hotel close to the station. I will find my own way from Worcester to West Kirby .", 1 side 4to., 9 Regent Street, London SW, headed paper, telegraphic address "Antexpedi, London", 5th November Shackleton had returned from his First Antarctic Expedition in 1909. Although he hadn't achieved the Pole, his expedition was celebrated as the first to climb Mount Erebus, and set the record of having travelled the Farthest South. In this interim period, Scott on his second Expedition in the Terra Nova, was known to have failed to achieve the Pole, with news of Amundsen's triumph in the Spring of 1912. Another German Expedition had commenced in May 1911, but it was not known to have failed until December 1912. Shackleton filled this time will Talks and Lectures, and some unsatisfactory money making enterprises. He was formulating plans, and organising sponsorship for what was to be his Imperial Transantarctic Expedition, of 1914-17.

Aux sanctuaires grecs. Paques 1912.

Large folio. Original printed wrappers (in colour on the front cover, both after watercolours by Mme. Brouardel); pp. 14, ff. 17-74 (plates with tissue guards), pp. 75-6, title printed in red an blue, with initial leaf with text in red and blue and two photos printed in photogravure, map, 446 snapshots printed in photogravure; apart from tiny marginal spot to title, a fine copy in the slightly worn, original patterned box with cloth ties. Extremely rare sole edition (number 68 of 130 copies) of this luxuriously and privately printed photographic travelogue of a study trip on a ship around Greece, organized by the founder and director of the periodical Revue générale des Sciences, Louis Olivier. The first trip had taken place to celebrate the First Olympic Games of 1896. Most of the tourists were French Grecophiles or former pupils of the École française d'Athènes, altogether a very cultured and educated group. The director of the journey and author of the text was Gustave Fourgères (1863-1927), an archaeology professor specialising in Ancient Greece. This copy was given to M. Poulenc, a member of the tour; we assume that the rarity, both commercially and institutionally (not in COPAC, both KVK and OCLC locate copies in Paris, Lausanne and Geneva) is due to the fact that each of the participants was sent a copy of this work to which several had contributed with their photographic skills. The photos in this impressive volume were not published anywhere else. See Haris Yiakoumis and Isabelle Roy, La croisière des savants, 1896-1912.

        De Paoli e Garrone 1912

1912. Bella fotografia stampa all'albumina, cm 16x12.

London: Eveleigh Nash. 1912. First edition. Octavo, pp. ix, 583, 16 of ads. Publisher's red cloth with blind stamped decoration to front and rear, gilt titles to front and spine. Now housed in a recent Morocco spined fleece lined clamshell box. Occasional light spotting throughout the textblock, area of rough paper to the rear pastedown where a bookplate or similar has been removed. Slight lean to the book. Both front and rear boards show some signs of wear with marking and some bumping to corners. Spine shows quite heavy marking and staining with the gilt faded to white, both front and rear outer joints beginning to go. Overall a very good copy of a rare and marvellous work, arguably Hodgson's greatest (it's not easy train-journey reading, and the linguistic liberties would make Tolkien homicidal, but it is astonishing). The text was highly regarded by many others in the field including the notoriously difficult to impress Mr. H.P.Lovecraft and his cabal.

- First Edition. Voleva fare i miei personaggi Poulot "povera donna".

Mabileau & Co, Paris 1912 - Hand-coloured pochoir print. Very good condition. Theophile Schneider, formerly of the Rochet/Schneider Company, began building his own cars in 1910. This car, a 2.8 litre 4 cylinder model, had an unusual radiator placement, on the dashboard. All pre-1914 Schneiders were built in this way. The Gamy-Montaut prints document various, mostly hurried events in the early history of motorized transportation, including Power Boat Racing, Motorcycle and Motor Car Racing, Motor Car Touring, Zeppelins and Airplanes. Clearly an enthusiast himself, Ernest Montaut produced his first motoring prints in the mid-1890s, and by 1897, his drawings depicted many races in France. Montaut's work was extremely well received in the Paris of his day and was shown in the fashionable shops of the Rue de l'Opera and Rue de la Paix, as well as in the better galleries. Marguerite Montaut, Ernest's wife, joined him in his work producing not only racing prints but also developing a fine series of aviation prints commemorating such events as the first flights on the early European mail routes. While Marguerite Montaut's works were occasionally signed "M. Montaut", she also used the name "Gamy", an anagram for Magy. The Gamy-Montaut prints were all produced by the pochoir process in which the outlines for each image were drawn onto lithographic stones and printed. Using these uncoloured prints as a template, elaborate stencils were cut for each colour. Water-colour was then brushed onto the image through the stencil. The colouring process was quite complex, with each print taking several days to produce. It was also quite labour intensive, and the studio of Gamy-Montaut therefore employed a group of trained artists, including Nevil and Campion, to assist in the colouring. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
