THE HOUSE OF PRIDE and Other Tales of Hawaii

1912. New York: The Macmillan Company, 1912. 8 pp undated ads. Original green cloth pictorially decorated in black, grey and white. First Edition, which consisted of only 4,340 copies. This collection of six tales is another result of the aborted Snark voyage, published three years later (when Jack was in the middle of constructing his "Wolf House"). It is a very different group of tales than those just issued as SOUTH SEA TALES...~His prejudices had mellowed. His Chinamen were courageous and wise and sometimes wealthy, while miscegenation could produce admirable and beautiful people who made Anglo-Saxon bias look foolish. Many of the stories conveyed a pleasant nostalgia for a way of life that he liked. Only in the tales about the lepers was his calm broken by his compassion and his horror of diseased flesh. There but for the grace of luck went he... These were stories of Polynesia, where the people were half-children and half-gods in Jack's eyes. His Melanesian stories [ADVENTURE, SOUTH SEA TALES] were of half-devils and all-beasts. [Sinclair]~As with SOUTH SEA TALES, this title is not at all common, especially in collectible condition; the attractive binding (initialed like the other by "G.H.") is often found substantially rubbed away, but here the volume is in fine condition (just the slightest of rubbing at the tips). The front free endpaper bears a signature, a Philadelphia address blind-stamp, and a 1916 ink-stamp. Sisson & Martens p. 62; Blanck 11936.

He notably illustrated editions of William Shakespeare, Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, J.M. Barrie and Oliver Goldsmith. She Stoops to Conquer is a comedy by Irish author Oliver Goldsmith that was first performed in London in 1773. The play is a favorite for study by English literature and theatre classes in Britain and the United States. It is one of the few plays from the 18th century to have an enduring appeal, and is still regularly performed today. It has been adapted into a film several times, including in 1914 and 1923. Initially the play was titled Mistakes of a Night, and indeed, the events within the play take place in one long night…

        Bells, The

1912. Only Poe Could Have Written The Poems Only Dulac Could Have Illustrated Them[DULAC, Edmund, illustrator]. POE, Edgar Allan. The Bells and Other Poems. With Illustrations by Edmund Dulac. London: Hodder and Stoughton, n.d. [1912]. First trade edition. Large quarto (10 7/8 x 8 1/2 in; 277 x 217 mm). Unpaginated. Twenty-eight mounted color plates, with descriptive tissue guards. Ten black ink head-pieces on tan backgrounds and portrait of Poe on the title-page, also in black ink on tan background. Original grey-green cloth, gilt stamped on front cover with all-over Dulac design of clusters of bells and lettered in gilt. Spine lettered in gilt and with similar design. Early ink presentation on half title, minimal rubbing to extremities, otherwise a very fine copy.Loosely inserted is the Leicester Galleries notice for the exhibition of the watercolours for the book.“Dulac’s pictures for The Bells were more uniform in mood and style than groupings for almost any other book of his to this time. Although water colours, they are overstreaked with gilt in some cases, crayon in others, to produce rich haunting effects. Deep shades of blue and a special deep pink-rust predominate throughout...The Outlook, which printed, in black and white, plate 22... commented: ‘…for the book thinking people will say with grace…sometimes Dulac’s pictures are deep-coloured and intense, sometimes dim and ghost-like. But one and all are sensitized to record impressions of unearthly beauty or horror. Only Poe could have written the poems. Only Dulac could have illustrated them.’…Not to be overlooked here are the sophisticated ink drawings Dulac made for headpieces. Although many of the books he illustrated had small ink decorations throughout…he had not worked in this medium so fluently since the days of doing illustrations for The Pall Mall magazine (1906-1908)…As the 10 Bells headpieces show, he had now become truly masterful with his pen” (Hughey).Hughey 29a

        Color Standards and Color Nomenclature

Second Revised and Expanded Edition by Published by the author, Washington, D.C.: 1912. Very good- in dark green cloth covered boards with gilt text on the front board with the gilt text on the spine barely visible. The cloth at the head and heel of the spine and around the edges of the boards is rubbed and bare of color. The hinges have been nicely reinforced with cloth tape compatible in color to the end sheets. Without a dust jacket. 44 pages of text followed by 53 plates of color swatches containing 1,115 named colors. Each plate is protected by a tissue guard. An errata slip is tipped-in prior to plate XXII explaining why plates XXII and XXIV are not in the index of color names. Twenty years in the making of this book represents a seminal achievement in the advancement of color identification for use in ornithology and botany. Ridgway (1850-1929) was a botanist and an ornithologist, a founder of the American Ornithologists' Union and curator of birds in the United States Museum (Smithsonian) from 1880 to 1915. This edition greatly expands and corrects the first edition of the title which was released in 1886. Hand stenciling of the plates for the first edition lead to "considerable variation in different copies of the book." (p. 13) This volume is a very scarce and an important work in the areas of ornithology, botany and color theory.

Modes et Manieres D'Aujourd'Hui. 1914 - 1919. Annees de Guerre

Paris: Collection Pierre Corrard. Limited First Edition. Folder. Near Fine. No. 164 of 300 limitation on Papier du Japon. This was a part of an immensely popular series of pochoir sets depicting fashion between 1912 and 1922, with a single issue for the war years, which appropriately carries a more somber tone in its illustrations and verse than the other issues released in more carefree times. Not that some of the joie de vivre and fashion flair is entirely absent here. Most striking about the pochoirs is the simplicity and efficiency of their representations. Georges Lepape was one of the foremost practictioners of the pochoir process, the peer of Georges Barbier, and here he shows himself as fluent at the bittersweet and tragic as at the light and frivolous. The twelve poems and illustrations have a flow and progression and thus this serves as a small lens on the war years and their tumult on the domestic front. The title page has a narrow band of darkening along the left side. The folder has a modest closed tear of the paper along the spine fold or joint. The ribbon tie is missing from the front but present in the rear. The decorated paper used to encase the loose sheets has a few minor tears along the vulnerable folds.

There are some short or tiny tears and little nicks to bottom edges of pages. Corners are rubbed but binding is firm and the inlaid picture to front cover of grey card has one or two chips. Somerville, with her friend "Martin" Ross, were the authors of many books (The Real Charlotte, Reminiscences of an Irish R. M., Slipper's ABC of Foxhunting, etc.) "The Discontented Little Elephant" would appear to be Somerville's rarest book, a robust moral tale for children with stronger stomachs than they do nowadays!         Landschaft am Mittelländischen Meer.

        SOME REMINISCENCES

1912. [to Reggie & Maisie Gibbon] London: Eveleigh Nash, 1912. 2 pp undated ads. Original dark blue cloth. First Edition of this autobiographical work, which initially appeared serially in Ford Madox Ford's newly-founded "English Review."~What is remarkable about Conrad's reminiscences is how clearly he employed fictional techniques worked out with Ford,... wherein the narrative intensity increases as the story develops. To achieve that, Conrad used a constantly interrupted narrative as a way of unsettling conventional sequences and, thereby, established anticipation of the next episode. Conrad needed a method that permitted intimacy, up to a certain point, and then withdrawal, when he had revealed enough... so his reminiscences would be matters of attack and retreat. [Karl]~SOME REMINISCENCES is generally believed to have slightly preceded the American edition -- which, as with subsequent English editions, was titled A PERSONAL RECORD. Wise claimed that only 1,000 copies were printed (apparently including some bound by Bell as the colonial issue), but Nash records have not survived to substantiate this.~This copy is in fine, bright condition (discreet bookplate of the remarkable Conrad collector Stanley J. Seeger). Cagle A15b.1. Housed in a morocco-backed slipcase with inner chemise.~This is an inscribed presentation copy from Conrad, with the following in his hand on the front free endpaper: "To | Maisie and Reggie | from their affectionate | J.C. | 1912". Perceval "Reggie" Gibbon (1879-1926) was, like Conrad, a former seaman who had become a writer; both used J.B. Pinker as an agent, which may be how they first met. When Conrad suffered his nervous breakdown in early 1910 (as he was completing UNDER WESTERN EYES), it was Gibbon who came to the rescue: Jessie Conrad later wrote of those months, "If it had not been for Perceval Gibbon who came often and always, it seemed, in the nick of time, I feel sure I would not have held out" [quoted in Karl p. 680]. Gibbon dedicated his Margaret Harding to the Conrads in 1911, and a few years later Conrad would reciprocate by dedicating VICTORY to Gibbon and his wife Maisie. Conrad and "Reggie" had a rather intense flurry of correspondence during the 'Teens, but most of it was lost during the Great War so not a lot is known about their friendship. At one point the two men considered collaborating on a play based on both men's early seafaring experiences in Africa (as in Conrad's "Heart of Darkness"). Toward the end of the war, Gibbon was a war correspondent with the Italian Army for The New York Times, and after the war he became a major in the British Royal Marines. As veteran Conrad collectors know, the most intimate inscriptions Conrad wrote were those he signed merely "J.C.
