THE STONEGROUND GHOST TALES COMPILED FROM THE RECOLLECTIONS OF THE REVEREND ROLAND BATCHEL, VICAR OF THE PARISH

Cambridge: W. Heffer & Sons Ltd.,. 1912. Octavo, pp. [1-8] 1-187 [188: printer's imprint],. original pictorial blue cloth, front and spine panels stamped in black.. Owner's signature on front free endpaper (an early noted collector of. supernatural fiction). Just a touch of sunning to spine panel, just a. touch of uniform tanning to endpapers and text block, a near fine. copy. A lovely copy of a book seldom found in nice condition.. (#102703). First edition. A collection of nine ghost stories dedicated to Swain's longtime friend M. R. James. "... Swain's tales share many features with those of James' and draw on the friends' common interests and antiquarian studies. They are however rather milder in tone and regularly incorporate a playful humour not often found in James' work. The tales relate the adventures of a fictionalized version of the author, Mr Batchel, Rector of Stoneground parish. Although by today's standards, readers may find Swain's stories rather lacking in supernatural horrors, their subtle qualities become apparent on re-reading, and many find Mr Batchel one of the most enduring creations of English ghost fiction." - Wilson, Shadows in the Attic, p. 468.         BELLS and Other Poems.

London Hodder and Stoughton [1912] - First edition. Illustrated with 28 supeb colour plates by Edmund Dulac. 4to, publisher’s original olive cloth very generously decorated in gilt and blind in pictorial and figurative designs over the entire spine and upper cover, with gilt decorated endleaves. A pleasing, bright, clean and handsome copy with only light age mellowing. The plates are especially bright with all captioned tissue guards present. SCARCE AND BEAUTIFUL FIRST EDITION. "The Outlook" and "The Bookman" both commented that "the book thinking people will say with grace.sometimes Dulac’s pictures are deep-coloured and intense, sometimes dim and ghost-like. But one and all are sensitized to record impressions of unearthly beauty or horror. Only Poe could have written the poems. Only Dulac could have illustrated them." Indeed, Dulac brings Poe’s genius to life with his worlds of swirling furies, forlorn moonlit maidens, and eerie fairy castles that seem to stumble away from reality into the edge of dream---or nightmare. One of Dulac’s most evocative creations. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Paris: L'Édition D'Art H. Piazza, 1912. - The Companion To Dulac's L'Ile EnchanteéWith A Tailpiece Design Not Found In Earlier English or French Editions[DULAC, Edmund, illustrator]. SHAKESPEARE, William. La Tempete [The Tempest]. Traduction de Robert Lefranc. Illustrations par Edmond Dulac. Paris: L'Édition D'Art H. Piazza, (1912). First edition in French under this title, a translation of Shakespeare's play. Quarto (11 7/8 x 9 1/4 in; 303 x 236 mm). 108, [2] pp with decorative "wave" borders. Forty mounted color plates with line borders, and captioned tissue guards. Title-page with Dulac-designed borders and galleon vignette. Five section headpieces, misc. tailpieces, including one tailpiece of an owl at end of Act Five not found in earlier French or English editions. Publisher's original wrappers with sea nymph vignette, in original glassine dust jacket. Aside from a few small nicks to the glassine jacket, this is a near fine copy. The companion volume to Dulac's L'Ile Enchanteé. Conte d'Apres Shakespeare (1908), the latter a prose adaptation of Shakespeare's The Tempest, the volume under notice a strict French translation of that play."The Tempest was Dulac's second major gift book work.[He] can be considered a perfect illustrator for Shakespeare because of his tendency to always mix in with serious pictures some humorous ones, just as Shakespeare inserted scenes of comic relief between his serious ones. Also, like Shakespeare, who is sometimes believed to have been a sailor because of his knowledge of seagoing lore, Dulac shows sensitivity to the nuances of the sea with his beautiful greens and blues and patterns of surf and rock.Hughey 19y.

Bill the Minder -- DE LUXE EDITION, SIGNED

London: Constable & Co. Ltd, 1912. - One of 380 copies in the Edition de Luxe, SIGNED by the author. A brilliant and hilarious novel featuring the eponymous hero and the children he minds--the nine rambunctious offspring of old Crispin the mushroom-gatherer--through their picaresque adventures, which conclude with the siege and capture of a Troy. The absurd and eccentric inventions for which Robinson was revered--imagine a partnership between MacGyver and Rube Goldberg--have their origins here. The book was heralded by one contemporary reviewer as "surely the most charming juvenile since PETER PAN." Wrote another: "Child or grownup, the book will fascinate you, text and illustations intermingling into one long delicious fancy that would make the longest and wettest day a blessing to the most restless." The novel was adapted as an animated series on Birtish television in the mid-1980s, not altogether unsuccessfully. Large 4to. Bound in publisher's full white vellum, stamped in gilt. Profusely illustrated, with innumerable line drawings and sixteen tipped in colour plates. Loss to yellow silk ties, otherwise a superb copy of an exceptional book. [Attributes: First Edition]

The South Pole. An Account of the Norwegian Antarctic Expedition in the "Fram," 1910-1912.

John Murray, London - 1912, 1st UK Edition. (Hardcover) Very good. xxxv, 392; x449pp. Numerous photo plates, maps, some folding. Original decorated cloth, t.e.g. Minor wear and a bit of spotting on the endpapers. Old library stamp, marked withdrawn on the front endpaper of each volume, otherwise a clean attractive copy. Both volumes signed and dated by Victor Campbell on the front paste downs. Spence 16. Taurus Collection 71, Rosove 9.A1 First edition in English, published the year before the New York edition and quite scarce. Amundsen had originally planned an expedition to repeat Nansen's drift with the Fram through the Arctic Ocean, and presumably to try for the north pole, but support for the project fell with the announcement of Cook's & Peary's accomplishments. He then turned toward the south, even though Scott's plans to attempt the south pole were well known, and was severely criticized (mostly in Great Britain) for competing with Scott. The two polar journeys were in marked contrast, and form part of one of the greatest dramas of exploration - Amundsen made the trip with dogs and skis, and with little difficulty, reaching the pole a month before Scott's party; Scott and four others reached the pole, but died on the return, just short of safety, after an heroic but ill-planned trip, dragging their own sleds. This set bears the ownership and annotations of Lieut. Victor Campbell, who was in charge of the Northern party. See colour illustration. Included is a copy of the Wicked Mate, the Antarctic Diary of Victor Campbell edited by H.G.R. King. Wonderful Association Copy [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Commemorative Drinking Glass Polen Er Naadd Den Fjortende Syttende December 1911. Ritvel Roald Amundsen

Oslo? 1912. () Near fine. Small clear finely made drinking glass. 12cm high X 7 CM in diameter at the top. Handpainted on the front is an image of Amundsen standing at the south pole holding the Norweigan flag. The image appears to be fired onto the glass. The glass is very fine and in excellent condition. A wonderful example of Norweigan patriotism and a wonderful South Pole Conmemmorative. I certainly believe the glass was produced after Amundsen returned, probably in 1912. Very scarce with this being the only example we have encountered..

        THE TALE OF MR TOD

      F. Warne & Co 1912 - First edition. 12mo. Grey paper covered boards, lettered in green and with pictorial onlay on the upper cover. In the original printed glassine dustwrapper. A fine copy in its printed glassine dustwrapper. The wrapper is in very good condition with a couple of minor chips to edges. Pictorial endpapers, 14 colour illustrations and many small line drawings. On sending the manuscript for Tod to her publisher's Potter wrote of it "I think this story is amusing". It differs from her other stories in that the principal characters are villains. The opening section of the original manuscript read "I am quite tired of making goody goody books" whilst the book on publication read, "I have made many books about well behaved people." It differs also in that it has fewer colour illustrations, introduces the use of line drawings and moves away from the style of short paragraphs used in the early tales. Lee and Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson and Confederate President Jefferson Davis on Georgia's Stone Mountain May 20, 1916. Come on, Marse Robert, throw yourself into the saddle, For the fifes are growing fretful and the drums begin to boom: Get a foot into the stirrup, then give your horse a chirrup And we'll ride Stone Mountain 'til the crack of doom! Come on, Marse Robert, your boys in gray are waiting; We have bivouacked in this granite since the minnie struck us dumb; But we'll rise in ancient glory to hear the splendid story Of your valor and your greatness yet to come. Come on, Marse Robert, the nation needs your presence. It needs you on this mountain where all its sons may gaze. In this time of strife and passion, lead them, in your kindly fashion, Into peace and brotherhood, as in the olden days. InvCode ZU34 ViewFair Books :.

        Bill the Minder

London: Constable, 1912. - He Doesn't Mind This Outstanding BindingBy Bayntun-RiviereROBINSON, W. Heath. [BAYNTUN-RIVIÉRE, binder]. Bill the Minder. London: Constable, 1912. Limited to 380 copies signed by the artist, this being copy no. 228. Quarto (10 5/8 x 8 1/2 in; 270 x 215 mm). xiv, [2], 254, [2] pp. Sixteen tipped-in color plates, including frontispiece, with captioned tissue guards, and 117 black and white illustrations, including full titlepages, vignettes, head- and tailpieces. An exceptional and unique 'inlaid binding', c. 1982, by Bayntun-Riviere (designed and finished by Christopher Lewis) in full red crushed morocco with multi-colored pictorial inlays and black-stamped flowers that reproduce the color plate, "The King of Troy Compelled to Ask His Way," opposite p. 30, within a blind-tooled frame surrounded by gilt double-ruled borders. Raised bands with gilt tools and compartments with gilt ornaments within a gilt double-ruled frame highlight the spine. Gilt rolled edgework. Gilt decorated turn-ins. All edges gilt. Cockerell endleaves. A very fine copy. Housed in the original red cloth slipcase."In Bill the Minder Heath Robinson really found himself. The story is a simple tale or a series of tales about the wanderings of the King of Troy and a boot-cleaner called Bill, who became the Minder (today he would be called a baby-sitter) to the bad-tempered family of a bad-tempered mushroom-gatherer named Crispin. Like most of Heath Robinson’s characters, Bill was a solemn little person who took his minding very seriously, even to the extent of studying at the British Museum and in the Minding Room of the Patents Museum at South Kensington. Soon he fame as a Minder spread and he found himself minding a large flock of children. One day they were out in the fields, being minded by Bill, they found an eccentric old man in a haystack. It was the King of Troy, who had been banished from his country. With Bill’s assistance, the children set out on a journey, and through a series of adventures they restore this unworldly old gentleman to his throne. In the process they meet some very droll characters. These are the substance of some of Heath Robinson’s wittiest drawings" (Lewis, p. 102).Chris Lewis was one of Bayntun-Riviere's most talented 'finishers'. He designed and finished many unique inlaid bindings during his time at Bayntun-Riviere in the sixties and then again prior to his death in the late eighties. [Attributes: First Edition]
