        Wealth and Welfare.

London: Macmillan and Co, Limited,, 1912. Octavo. Rebound in modern black quarter morocco, 2 green morocco labels to second and fourth compartments on spine, raised bands ruled in gilt, red cloth boards, marbled endpapers, relined, uncut edges. A few nicks to fore edges and the occasional dampstain, otherwise a bright copy. First edition, first impression, of Pigou's major early work which established his reputation as a leading economist and which formed the basis for his major work, The Economics of Welfare (1920), which is considered to have "virtually created the subject of welfare economics" (ODNB). He was in many ways overshadowed through the first half of the twentieth century by the great Keynes whose ideas in no small part owed much to this important economist of the previous generation. The term "Pigou Effect" came to refer to the rise in consumption driven by the lowering of price. Keynes of course would later develop this idea into what we all know as the principles of supply and demand.

Judith Lee Some Pages From Her Life.

London Methuen 1912 - First edition. 8vo. 317pp. + 30pp. ads. Publsiher's red cloth titled in gilt to spine and front board. Minor edgewear and bumping, and what looks like some nibbling to the rear joint with some small loss to the cloth. A very good, strong copy. Internally clean. A nice copy (cosmetic gnawing notwithstanding) of the elusive first appearance in book form of Marsh's intrepid, hot-headed lip reading female detective. Typically with Marsh, despite her initial popularity being won in the pages of The Strand, Miss Marsh is not your standard Holmes imitator. She is a fiercely independent young woman, smart and decisive with a candid and outspoken assessment of her male counterparts; a teacher in a school for the deaf, she has the ability to lip read with great accuracy at distance, in several languages. The exercising of this particular skill is what propels her, more often than not into her adventures amongst knife wielding thugs, society cads and the kind of people that would tie a woman up and cut her hair off, thus driving our heroine to irresistible vengeance. It is abundantly clear that nobody messes with Miss lee and gets away with it. Rare. WTPC7 [Attributes: Hard Cover]

ANIMAL PORTRAITURE With Fifty Studies in Full Colour Reproduced From the Original Paintings

London and New York: Frederick Warne & Co., (1912). First Edition. Illustrated with 50 magnificent mounted colour plates reproducing the original oil paintings by Wilhelm Kuhnert, with tissue guards. Folio, publisher's original dark polished buckram with the borders ruled in black, the upper cover with a portrait of a lion within a frame bordered in black with gilt corner pieces and gilt lettering, the spine gilt lettered and with a portrait of an antelope in gilt, t.e.g. viii, 105 (including index) pp. A very fine and handsome copy of this impressive book. The cloth unusually fresh, clean and well preserved with only the most trivial evidence of age or use, the plates all bright and very fine, the text clean and solid, a little uniform toning to the paper as is always the case but essentially near as pristine and a truly excellent copy. THE SCARCE FIRST EDITION OF THIS MARVELOUSLY ILLUSTRATED WORK. Lydekker's informative and readable articles provide a contiguous, fluid narration for these exquisite color plates based on original oil paintings by artist Wilhelm Kuhnert. Kuhnert has often been praised for his vigorous realism and accuracy, and in this work he does magnificent justice to his reputation. Every plate is beautifully painted in lush colors with a subtle blend of realism and watercolor-like softness. He depicts mammal, bird, and reptile alike with rich contrasting and harmonious color, with feather, fur, and scale all precisely and marvelously rendered. Squirrels, echidnas, and marmots become elegant; lions, Manchurian tigers, and wolves fully display their noble natures; sea gulls soar against what almost seems a living, moving sea. An extremely desirable work and a well preserved copy of this exquisite book.

THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF AN EX-COLOURED MAN

Sherman, French & Co., Boston 1912 - Original gilt-decorated cloth. Johnson's first book, a fictional autobiography that appeared anonymously and explored the issue of a black man passing for white in America, serving as a launchpad for many later novels exploring the question of what it means to be black in America. This self-published first printing fared poorly, accounting in large part for the book's notorious scarcity, and it did not reach a wide readership until the second edition was published in 1927 and Johnson claimed authorship. INSCRIBED and SIGNED in full by the author "To Mr. Hamilton Holt,/With the sincere admiration/and esteem of the author,/James W. Johnson./New York City,/Sept. 30, 1913." It was in New York four years earlier that Holt helped to found the National Association of the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). At the time of publication of this book Holt was proprietor and editor of the weekly INDEPENDENT. He was also one of this country's foremost internationalists, founding the World Federation League and serving as president of the American Peace Congress and director of the World Peace Foundation before spending years promoting the League of Nations. After an unsuccessful bid for the U.S. Senate in Connecticut, Holt accepted the presidency of Rollins College in Florida. Blockson's 101 Influential Books: #56. Holt's bookplate on pastedown with a modern postage stamp honoring Johnson. Some spotting and discoloration to the scarlet cloth, mostly on the spine and at the rear with minor fraying at the head of the spine.         Hrad smrti. (Barevnými d?evoryty vyzdobil Josef Váchal). [The city of death. With color woodcuts by Josef Váchal]

Král. Vinohrady (Prague): self-published, 1912. Quarto (25 x 18 cm). Contemporary fine binding by Ant. Stelibský; wrappers preserved; 51 pp. With a front wrapper design, decorations, and eleven original color woodcuts by Váchal (frontispiece, title, nine plates with tissue guards, and the original woodcut illustration to front wrapper). Signed by Deml on the half title. About very good. First edition of this expressionistic "found" prose poem by Jakub Deml (1878-1961), one of the most bizarre and enigmatic figures of Czech interwar literature. A Catholic priest from rural Moravia, Deml constantly appeared to rebel against the church, maintained suspiciously close ties to various female muses, and was involved in numerous public scandals, while producing an enormous body of written work, often published in small bibliophile editions. He is now considered an important representative of Czech modernist literature and writers such as Vit?zslav Nezval considered Deml's highly associative texts to be related to his own surrealist experiments. He also maintained close contacts to contemporary artists, such as Franti?ek Bílek. Deml's friendship with the painter and printmaker Váchal-an almost equally complex and difficult person-was short and intense, but it resulted in the present early collaboration. Váchal's ominous black and yellow woodcuts complement and complete Deml's brooding, difficult dream-inspired prose poem about life after death. In a striking artistic morocco binding that manifests its own interpretation of the "castle of death" image. One of 500 copies printed. Sá?ka 183. KVK, OCLC show copies at British Library, University of Chicago, Harvard, Toronto, and Yale only.

Moscow: Imperatorskii Rossiiskii Istoricheskii Muzei imeni Imperatora Aleksandra III; Tipo-Lit. Torgovogo doma Korkin, Veideman i Ko, 1912. Quartos (26.8 × 18 cm). Original printed wrappers; [4], 1-190, 191-382, 383-597, [1], and [1], 1-77, [2] pp. Three photogravure plates, two with protective tissue guards. Occasional light wear to spine extremities; bookstore marks partially erased to rear wrappers; very good copies. Complete catalog, in four volumes, of the collection built by the Moscow merchant Aleksei Bakhrushin (1853-1904) over three decades. Bakhrushin's library contained over 25.000 volumes, largely on Russian history, art, and literature, including reference works and Rossica in foreign languages, which the catalog lists alphabetically. The fourth installment adds foreign-language books collected by Bakhrushin, also mainly on topics relating to Russia, as well as on library science and art history. During Bakhrushin's life, the library was used widely by scholars and fellow collectors, as documented by his guestbook, which contains entries by Pavel Efremov, Ivan Zabelin, D. V. Ul'ianinskii and many others. In 1904, after his death, the collection was bequeathed to the Russian Historical Museum located just off Red Square in Moscow, along with Bakhrushin's extensive holdings in paintings, decorative arts, antiques, posters, and other printed ephemera. In 1938, the greater part of the books was transferred to the State Public Historical Library. The publication of the catalogs was financed by the collector's widow, Anna S. Bakhrushina. With three photogravures showing Bakhrushin and the collection at his home in Vorontsovo Pole, Moscow (vol. I) and a frontis showing the new Bakhrushin room at the Historical Museum, which housed the collection after his death.

The pituitary body and its disorders clinical states produced by disorders of the hypophysis cerebri. An amplification of the Harvey Lecture for December, 1910.

Philadelphia, J.B. Lippincott, 1912, 8, X, 341 pp., 1 farb. lith. Taf., 319 Abb., orig. Leinenband. First clinical monograph on the hypophysis!FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE - Dr. Cushing's first separately published monograph!"Cushing, outstanding neurological surgeon of the present century, added much to our knowledge of the pituitary body and its disorders. The above work includes a description of his own method of operating on the pituitary. He assumed that in diabetes insipidus the pituitary was involved." The physiology of the hypophysis, its diseases, and their treatment, were early and life-long interests of Cushing. His studies of this subject, as of most anything he touched, were exhaustive, and the textual matter, case histories, and illustrations in this pioneer work have scarcely been improved upon to this day. This book is an amplification of the Harvey Lecture of December, 1910.""The pituitary monograph is based upon a detailed clinical study of fifty cases of endocrine disturbance. All of the things for which Cushing stood in clinical medicine are exemplified in the remarkable case histories of his fifty subjects." "The book is profusely illustrated (319 figures), and since changes in facial contours constituted an important part of the story he wished to present, photographs of many of his cases are included. Those showing the development of acromegaly in individual cases have become classic and have subsequently been reproduced in many textbooks of endocrinology, physiology, and clinical medicine." "The monograph stands as a milestone in American medicine, and more particularly in the history of endocrinology, for it introduced a clinical concept of endocrine function which did much to clarify..." One cannot dismiss the pituitary monograph without brief mention of Cushing's surgical contribution for, until his work appeared, there were few in the surgical world who had the courage to tackle a pituitary operation. After Cushing had shown the way the operation became something of a routine affair which many soon began to undertake. In Cushing's first case the pituitary was approached through the frontal sinuses but such an approach has two disavantages - the first being that the frontal sinuses are often infected and meningitis may follow when the cranial cavity is entered through them the other, that it leaves a cyclopean scar, distasteful especially to women. Cushing found that the pituitary could also be approached satisfactorily by elevating the upper lip and approaching the sphenoidal bone by a submucous dissection of the nasal mucous membrane. This largely removed the hazard of infection (1912 !) and it had the great advantage of leaving no visible scar. In current parlance this operation has come to be known as Cushing's transsphenoidal approach. In cases of marked intracranial extension of the pituitary tumor a more formidable surgical procedure is necessitated, involving a large bone flap similar to that employed for any other brain tumor."HC 1 Heirs of Hippocrates No. 1160 Garrison & Morton No. 1161,3896,4893.1 Waller 2252 Courville No. 524 Fulton pp.321-323 Walker 493

PYRAMUS & THISBE ein TRAUERSPIL AUS SOMMERNACHTSTRAUM v. SHAKESPEARE

Darmstadt: G. v. Koch, 1912. FIRST EDITION. Very good. Small octavo, 143 x 106 mm. 14 leaves printed recto only (the first is blank), a single gathering sewn into plum wraps, illustrated with two hand-colored red hearts pierced by a sword. Some minor sunning to covers, interior fine. COLOPHON: D v. KSV gedruckt al sechstes opus der presse des vereins zur ausfuhrung G. v. Koch'scher kinderspiele in 200 exemplaren, davon 25 auf buttenpapier. Printed by children, for children, at "probably the strangest private press of all time" (Horodisch). This is extremely rare play by the zoologist, botanist, artist, and professional uncle Gottlieb von Koch, created under the tutelage of typographer Christian Kleukens, at the home of Koch and his wife Elise in Darmstadt, where they ran a kind of daycare retreat for artistic children. "Koch was a peculiar, unforgettable phenomenon: his beard, the long-drooping hair, the broad, unfashionable sloppy hat, and the wide cloak, gave him a strange look. Adults who did not know him might have viewed him with suspicion, but the children greeted him with radiant eyes when they met him in the yard, on his daily journey to his house on Viktoriastrasse, where he and his wife Elise made their house into a paradise for children. Under the their guidance, the children were allowed to print with a small printing press, under the guidance of Professor Christian Heinrich Kleukens and 'Uncle Gottlieb.' Children were also encouraged in other arts, including drawing and even photography" (Scheer). The play - the sixth production of the D v. KSV press according to the colophon - is an adaptation by von Koch of the Mechanicals' production of Pyramus and Thisbe in A Midsummer Night's Dream, and was printed entirely in a sans-serif grotesk (quite unusual in German educational printing of the period. The Jugendstil title-page illustration was drawn by Koch himself. We know of no other press whose entire output was printed by children.         The pituitary body and its disorders; clinical states produced by disorders of the hypophysis cerebri. An amplification of the Harvey Lecture for December, 1910.

      - Philadelphia, J.B. Lippincott, 1912, 8°, X, 341 pp., 1 farb. lith. Taf., 319 Abb., orig. Leinenband. First clinical monograph on the hypophysis! FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE - Dr. Cushing's first separately published monograph! "Cushing, outstanding neurological surgeon of the present century, added much to our knowledge of the pituitary body and its disorders. This book is an amplification of the Harvey Lecture of December, 1910." "The pituitary monograph is based upon a detailed clinical study of fifty cases of endocrine disturbance. All of the things for which Cushing stood in clinical medicine are exemplified in the remarkable case histories of his fifty subjects." "The book is profusely illustrated (319 figures), and since changes in facial contours constituted an important part of the story he wished to present, photographs of many of his cases are included. Those showing the development of acromegaly in individual cases have become classic and have subsequently been reproduced in many textbooks of endocrinology, physiology, and clinical medicine." "The monograph stands as a milestone in American medicine, and more particularly in the history of endocrinology, for it introduced a clinical concept of endocrine function which did much to clarify." One cannot dismiss the pituitary monograph without brief mention of Cushing's surgical contribution for, until his work appeared, there were few in the surgical world who had the courage to tackle a pituitary operation. After Cushing had shown the way the operation became something of a routine affair which many soon began to undertake. In Cushing's first case the pituitary was approached through the frontal sinuses; but such an approach has two disavantages - the first being that the frontal sinuses are often infected and meningitis may follow when the cranial cavity is entered through them; the other, that it leaves a cyclopean scar, distasteful especially to women. In cases of marked intracranial extension of the pituitary tumor a more formidable surgical procedure is necessitated, involving a large bone flap similar to that employed for any other brain tumor."         Golf from The Times A Reprint, revised and re-arranged, of some Articles on Golf, by The Times Special Contributor.

London: The Times 1912 - First Edition, 8vo., Advert + pp. 141, original green cloth lettered in gilt. Darwin, the grandson of the great evolutionist Charles, was a gifted writer almost single-handedly responsible for creating golf literature as a genre. No mean player himself, he reached the semi-finals of the British Amateur Championship in 1909 and 1921. Anthologies of his writings for The Times and Country Life over nearly half a century have become important landmarks for golfing book collectors, as have his full-length publications, notably the seminal Golf Courses of the British Isles (Duckworth, 1910). This anonymous collection of ten articles – ‘revised’ and from their original newspaper form - covers such subjects as courses, great matches, modern developments, and golfing psychology and humour. Certainly they justify the words stamped to the rear cover: ‘The Times treats the game of Golf in a more comprehensive way than any other newspaper’. ONE OF DARWIN’S EARLIEST, AND ONE OF HIS RAREST, PUBLICATIONS. “The toughest find among Darwin anthologies, but an important one as all 10 essays are unique to this volume” (Daniel Wexler). “This was Darwin’s first book and is as charming as his last” (Joseph Murdoch). CONDITION: Binding a little bumped at extremities and upper cover a fraction bowed. Gilt largely unfaded. Small tear to fore edge of Preface. Light foxing to first few leaves; generally good. SIZE: 215 x 130mm, 8½ x 5 ins. REF: D&M 14040. Murdoch Golf Library AN 348, p. 73. Wexler ‘The Golfer’s Library’ p. 69. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[Attributes: Hard Cover]
