Modes et Manieres D'Aujourd'Hui. 1914 - 1919. Annees de Guerre Douze Guoaches de Georges Lepape. Douze Poemes de Henry-Jacques

Collection Pierre Corrard, Paris - No. 164 of 300 limitation on Papier du Japon. This was a part of an immensely popular series of pochoir sets depicting fashion between 1912 and 1922, with a single issue for the war years, which appropriately carries a more somber tone in its illustrations and verse than the other issues released in more carefree times. Not that some of the joie de vivre and fashion flair is entirely absent here. Most striking about the pochoirs is the simplicity and efficiency of their representations. Georges Lepape was one of the foremost practictioners of the pochoir process, the peer of Georges Barbier, and here he shows himself as fluent at the bittersweet and tragic as at the light and frivolous. The twelve poems and illustrations have a flow and progression and thus this serves as a small lens on the war years and their tumult on the domestic front. The title page has a narrow band of darkening along the left side. The folder has a modest closed tear of the paper along the spine fold or joint. The ribbon tie is missing from the front but present in the rear. The decorated paper used to encase the loose sheets has a few minor tears along the vulnerable folds. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Hike and the Aeroplane

Frederick A. Stokes Company, New York 1912 - A scarce copy of Sinclair Lewis' pseudonymous debut, a juvenile novel about the adventures of a 16 year old hero fighting a villainous captain. Published in a single, small print run of 1,000 copies, and like many authors, Lewis' embarassment over his early effort caused him not to allow Hike to be reprinted until 1979. Lewis' bibliographer notes that after a recent census was taken, just 35 copies were extant, and two others known in dustjacket. Octavo (19.5cm); gray pictorial cloth; 275pp; illus. Spine slightly sunned, some soil to text edges, with rubbing to the extremities and cover decorations and minor pull to rear endpaper; a Very Good copy, housed in a custom clamshell case.         Number 22]

      M. Campion, Colombes 1912 - The Gamy-Montaut prints document various historical events in the early history of motorized transportation, including Power Boat Racing, Motorcycle and Motor Car Racing, Motor Car Touring, Zeppelins and Airplanes. Having observed the rapidly growing interest in cars and racing during the early years of motor cars, Ernest Montaut produced his first motoring prints in the mid-1890s, and by 1897, his drawings were pictorial records of the many races in France. Montaut's work was extremely well received in the Paris of his day and was shown in the fashionable shops of the Rue de l'Opera and Rue de la Paix, as well as in the better galleries. Marguerite Montaut, Ernest's wife, joined him in his work producing not only racing prints but also developing a fine series of aviation prints commemorating such events as the first flights on the early European mail routes. While Marguerite Montaut's works were occasionally signed "M. Montaut", she also used the name "Gamy", an anagram for Magy. The Gamy-Montaut prints were all produced by the pochoir process in which the outlines for each image were drawn onto lithographic stones and printed. Using these uncoloured prints as a template, elaborate stencils were cut for each colour. Water-colour was then brushed onto the image through the stencil. The colouring process was quite complex, with each print taking several days to produce. It was also quite labour intensive, and the studio of Gamy-Montaut therefore employed a group of trained artists, including Nevil and Campion, to assist in the colouring. Hand-coloured pochoir print. Very good condition apart from a paper crease and some minor foxing in the bottom margin. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

This is the complete, first appearance in print, of the famous fantasy novel, wherein the character of Prof. George Challenger is first introduced. Published in monthly parts, as the leader in the Strand Magazine, by George Newnes, Ltd., London, commencing in April, 1912, and then in consecutive monthly parts until November, 1912. The extraordinary illustrations are by Harry Rountree and the "late Maple White" [actually ACD, using his own faked photos]. Some of these illustrations are unique to this issue. The first book edition appeared in October of the same year under the imprint of British publisher Hodder & Stoughton. A General Index precedes volume I.         F. S. Harmon & Company Furniture.

      F. S. Harmon & Co. Seattle. 1912-1913. - Lavishly illustrated catalogue of furniture and other domestic items bound in green cloth boards, 15 x 9.75 inches, secured with two large screw posts. Diagonal 2.5 inch loss of cloth on upper right corner of front cover, corners bumped, wear to extremities which is mostly light but with cloth worn through at lower corner of back cover. The cover page of the first section is loose and has been creased and repaired on the front with tape ("Supplement. September 1912"), the last page (featuring Bissell carpet sweepers and Fireless Cookers) is lightly creased with short edge tears. (Various interior pages are dated Fall 1911 and April 1913.) The volume contains over 600 illustrated pages in color and black and white. Contents (apart from first and last pages) are in very good condition, with very occasional short marginal tears. An uncommon furniture catalogue from a Pacific Northwest manufacturer. Contents divided by seven labeled tabs, most of which have tape repairs; each section is individually numbered (one section lacks pagination.) The tabs identify a particular line of goods: "Chairs, Rockers, Upholstered Furniture"; "Porch Furniture, Go-Carts, Refrigerators"; "Ex. Tables, Buffets, China Closets"; "Standard Library Tables, Book Cases"; "Office and Hall Furniture, Mirrors"; "Lace Curtains, Rugs, Linoleum, Drapery Sundries." A number of pictured items are stamped "discontinued." Pages for rugs and linoleum are particularly attractive (see illustrations). An impressive catalogue, presumably quite scarce, picturing domestic furniture, hardware, floor coverings, prams, lawn and porch furniture, refrigerators etc. from the early twentieth century.         Album of 17 original silver print coaching photographs, upper cover gilt- titled "'All Sport' / Plaza Hotel - Arrowhead Inn - Madison Square Garden / Nov. 23, 1912 / L. Moyes"

New York, ca. 1912 - An album of exceptional interest, recording the excursion of two four-in- hand coaches (one, presumably driven by Mr. Moyes) beginning at the Plaza Hotel entrance, entering and going through Central Park and up Riverside Drive (past the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument) and thence along the Hudson and into the countryside, where they pose by what is presumably the Arrowhead Inn before returning to New York. On some stretches they share the road with automobiles, and there is a particularly fetching scene of one coach and two cars at a suburban intersection under the watchful eye of a mounted police sergeant. As many as ten elegantly-dressed, carnation- wearing passengers are shown seated atop one of the vehicles, which bears the lettering: "Claremont / Washington Heights / New Rochelle / Fordham", suggesting that it may be a public coach. We have been unable to trace Mr. Moyes (he was not, apparently a member of The Coaching Club) but on this outing at least, he and his friends seem to be having a good time while it lasted, before the ubiquitous automobile curtailed the sport on public roads. A SPLENDID PICTORIAL RECORD (COACHING) Oblong 8vo (10 x 13 inches). On front endpaper is pasted the business card of "Haas / Photographer / 546 Fifth Avenue New York City", presumably the studio of Robert Haas, an Austrian-born photographer. Each photo, about 5 x 8 inches, is mounted on hinged card stock on two-color under-mats, protected by glassine sheets--a very attractive presentation. Original blue calf, a little scuffed, bottom of spine worn, else fine. Witkin and London, Photograph Collector's Guide, p. 349

        BELLS and Other Poems

London: Hodder and Stoughton, [1912]. First edition. Illustrated with 28 supeb colour plates by Edmund Dulac. 4to, publisher’s original olive cloth very generously decorated in gilt and blind in pictorial and figurative designs over the entire spine and upper cover, with gilt decorated endleaves. A pleasing, bright, clean and handsome copy with only light age mellowing. The plates are especially bright with all captioned tissue guards present. SCARCE AND BEAUTIFUL FIRST EDITION. “The Outlook” and “The Bookman” both commented that ”the book thinking people will say with grace...sometimes Dulac’s pictures are deep-coloured and intense, sometimes dim and ghost-like. But one and all are sensitized to record impressions of unearthly beauty or horror. Only Poe could have written the poems. Only Dulac could have illustrated them.” Indeed, Dulac brings Poe’s genius to life with his worlds of swirling furies, forlorn moonlit maidens, and eerie fairy castles that seem to stumble away from reality into the edge of dream---or nightmare. One of Dulac’s most evocative creations.

        Plato's Democratus - Sysifus - Kleitofon - Ion - Minos]

[Fexis], 1912 - 72 pp. First Edition. Nikos Kazantzakis (1883-1957) was best known for penning Zorba the Greek. However, before his success he was hard-pressed to earn a living as a journalist. In 1907, as a young man he moved from Athens to Paris to absorb the high culture of France and study philosophy. He returned to Athens in 1910. Between 1911 and 1915 he collaborated with the Athens publishing house Fexis in translating works of ancient to modern Greece while he pursued his journalism. Translations of his books into other European languages did not appear until his old age, hence he found it difficult to earn a living by writing, which led him to write a great deal, including a large number of translations from French, German, and English, and curiosities such as French fiction and Greek primary school texts, mainly because he needed the money. His first book of Greek translations was published in 1911. This is his second book of Greek translation?of Plato's works. Despite being written in the same language, ancient and modern Greek do not convey the same "understanding" to their texts?therefore the need for a "translation." A rare work by Greece's most famous writer of modern literature; size: 8.25 x 5.5 inches. Seventeen sheets of adverts on newsprint at the end. Stain to front cover; else fine.         The Devil's Wind

      G. P. Putnam's Sons New York 1912 - First Edition. Wentworth's extremely scarce third novel, a work of intrigue and adventure set during the Indian Mutiny of 1857 in which an English couple escapes from the massacre at Cawnpore to the Indian countryside. Wentworth, best known for her mystery novels and series character Miss Silver, began her literary career with three romances before turning to the mystery genre. This title is the third such romance: the second work published in 1911, Little More Than Kin, is absent from any current catalogue of her works. This volume unique for retaining the original publisher's decorative and printed dustjacket. An extremely uncommon Wentworth title to be found thus. Near Fine in Good dustjacket, front panel edges showing wear, spine ends and flap corners with less than centimeter deep chipping, nickel sized chip at top front panel, small chip at mid-rear spine edge, lower rear panel fairly evenly chipped perhaps a half centimeter deep.         Account of Republican Convention 1912

Np: Privately printed, Nd. Only Edition. Wraps. Very good. Quarto; pp; 53 pages printed on rectos only; original gray wrappers, string tied with red ribbon;. A "Typewritten account of the Republican National Convention in Chicago, June 13-21, 1912, by Nicholas Roosevelt, cousin of Theodore Roosevelt. Nicholas describes traveling by train from New York to Chicago with Theodore, Edith, and Kermit Roosevelt, and other members of the election party. During the convention, Nicholas describes meeting with Chicago Tribune reporter John Callan (Cal) O'Lauglin, working with his colleague Charles P. Curtis for the Roosevelt campaign and the Progressive Party, the theft of delegates by Taft Republicans and votes for Elihu Root. Also includes details on speeches given at the convention and the response from delegates. The account was constructed from diary entries and letters N. Roosevelt wrote to family members during the convention" . OCLC listing, #43562426. OCLC locates just a single copy at the Massachusetts Historical Society Library. Also accompanying this piece is a typed letter signed, (Tls) by Nicholas Roosevelt to William Roscoe Thayer, author of "Theodore Roosevelt, An Intimate Biography". Roosevelt is verifying some times that Thayer has inquired about. It appears that he was at factual odds with O. K. Davis who was also a participant in the Chicago 1912 events and wrote, "Released For Publication". Nicholas has verified that Davis has been incorrect "and your reputation for veracity is saved". A rare opportunity to own an incredibly scarce TR piece from the Bull Moose experience. Cousin Nicholas was close to TR all his young life.

My Journey in Uganda in the Years 1911-12

[Prague]: Privately printed c. 1912 - Original photographic album. Oblong quarto. Hand colored map with contemporary regional names. 128 hand-captioned sepia toned gelatin silver prints chronicling an expedition through Kenya and Uganda led by Richard Storch in the early 1900s. Storch was a Czech professional hunter and an amateur photographer, although these photographs cannot be directly attributed to him. Most of the images in the album portray the various tribal peoples encountered en route, with great attention to clothing, jewelry, hair style, and body ornamentation. The travelers and their porters are also documented, with two appalling images of porters chained together to prevent them from quitting the expedition. Covers lightly soiled, but lovely overall in string-tied burlap boards.
