Cm.28,2x20,2.

Cm.28,2x20,2.

Georg Schöne (1875- ), coiner of the term "transplantation immunity," was among the first to study tumor immunology by means of transplantable tumor lines in experimental animals. "From the very outset of these investigations of transplantable tumors, it was noted that there were very strict limitations on the ability of the tumor transplant to survive in the new host. The experimental work of barely a decade was summarized in 1912 in "Die hetroplastische und homöoplastische Transplantation". - Schöne made clear, tumor researches had already established by 1912 the general rules governing the acceptance or rejection of tumor grafts. . . . Here, in 1912, are the 'laws of transplantation' substantially as we understand them today" Silverstein, Hist. Immunology, pp. 278-79. - Schöne generalized these findings beyond tumors to encompass the transplantation of skin and organs. His work forms one of the foundation stones of the Nobel-Prize winning transplantation researches conducted a generation later by Medawar and Burnet. - Garrison & Morton No. 2567.1

        THE MASTER OF MYSTERIES.

1912 - First edition. Near fine, tight, bright copy. Illustrated by Karl Anderson and George Brehm. Queen's Quorum 50 says, ". which were published anonymously in the same year. Acknowledgment of authorship was made in the book itself by means of a cipher: the first letters of the first words of the twenty-four stories read "The Author Is Gelett Burgess"; the last letters of the last words of the twenty-four stories read: false to life and false to art. The detective so scornfully exposed is Armenian-born Astrogon Kerby, or Astro, who pretends to be a palmist and crystal-gazer and who affects a jeweled turban, flowing silk robes, silver-mounted water-pipe, and even a pet white lizard."         The Complete Works of John Ruskin in 39 volumes. The Library Edition. Edited by E.T. Cook and Alexander Wedderburn

George Allen and Unwin, 1903 - 1912. - The Library Edition of the complete works of John Ruskin completed in 39 volumes over a period of nine years. Comprising the totality of his known works with many letters and previously unpublished material up to that date and forms a tremendous record of the achievement of one of Britain's foremost art critics who was also an accomplished artist in his own right as well as being an important patron, philanthropist and social thinker. Arguably his most important achievements in his lifetime were the championing of the pre-Raphaelites and his important defence of J.M.W. Turner which brought him to prominence early in his life. The edition was the outcome of twelve years work by Edward Tyas Cook and Alexander Wedderburn, although Cook completed the bulk of the editing. The aim of The Library Edition was to provide the complete works of Ruskin both literary and artistic, in uniform volumes. The edition was undertaken by Messrs. George Allen, Ruskin's publishers. Illustrated by 820 wood blocks and 990 full-page plates with 120 facsimiles of MSS., the edition includes 269 plates of Ruskin's own drawings of which 200 had never before been published. Portraits of Ruskin are used as frontispieces to some of the volumes. The press work was carried out by Messrs. Ballantyne of Edinburgh, and the weight of type amounted to nine tons, whilst the printing ink weighed 1800lbs. Printed on hand-made, linen rag paper (about 87tons) with a double watermark of Ruskin's monogram and seal. The edition consisted of 2062 sets, of which 2000 were available for sale to subscribers for the full set. The first volume was published on 27 March 1903. George Allen did not live to see the completion of the edition dying on 5 September 1907, his children taking over the firm. A Fine set in publisher's deluxe full stamped morocco binding, unused and completely unopened. This binding is unrecorded in James Dearden's Monograph on the Library Edition and as far as I can trace has only appeared twice at auction in the last 50 years; once in the early 1970's and again in 2003. The front and rear boards are a reworking of the pattern used for the first edition of The Seven Lamps of Architecture, 1849, designed by W. Harry Rogers and bound by Westleys. However it is here from a completely new die as the stamping is in the negative compared to The Seven Lamps and whilst adhering to the design, it has been rendered more 'Arts & Crafts', the lines cleaner and the illustrations of the animals more stylised. The roundel on the spines encloses a peacock, relating to Ruskin's association with Venice and this appears to be a re-drawing of Ruskin's own drawing which appears in the Library Edition [Volume IX, Plate VIII]. The binder is unacknowledged although a number of loosely inserted slips refer to the morocco supplied by the firm of John S. Deed and Sons. In exceptional condition with only a few very light scuffs and some dustiness, this is as near perfect a set as you could wish for. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Historical Erotic Epistolary from the 1910s with More than One Hundred Original Color and Black and White Drawings

. Full-Leather. A unique look at human sexuality and literary Romantic love in the early part of the twentieth century during the colonial and modernist eras. As noted by the famous French philosopher Michel Foucault in his "repressive hypothesis,” the age of Victorian repression clearly produced non-traditional expressions of lust. The epistolary consists of an original diary and correspondence between two lovers from 1912 to approximately 1916. It is written primarily in English with some excerpts in Italian. The primary diarist is presumed to be an Italian officer during the colonial era of the early 20th century involving Italy, Britain and the "Mad Mullah" in the Benadir region of East Africa. The other correspondent is probably a British lady living in Tuscany at the time. The epistolary includes more than one hundred original drawings of various sexual acts, most of which are in color and include detailed descriptions of the scenes depicted. Some images are watercolors, some pastels, and others are simple pencil sketches. The size and type of paper used varies greatly. The letters were bound at least twice. The current binding is red leather with raised bands on the spine, and gilt decorations on cover and spine. The volume comes in slipcase and it measures approximately 20x30 cm. The first and last few pages have some stains but most of the letters and drawings are remarkably well preserved. Scans of some of the drawings and pages are available on request. ; Curiosa .

There are some penciled check marks on one page and a newspaper review of the book is affixed to front free endpage (it calls this, the latest volume of the "Campaigns and their Lessons" series, "fully up to the high standard of its predecessors"). The book has long been considered the single best one-volume account of British campaigns against the tribes along India's North-West Frontier 1851-1908, as well as a valuable tool for British medal collectors for its information on the small campaigns of those British and Indian regiments.         Album of 17 original silver print coaching photographs, upper cover gilt-titled "'All Sport' / Plaza Hotel - Arrowhead Inn - Madison Square Garden / Nov. 23, 1912 / L. Moyes"

New York, ca. 1912. (COACHING) Oblong 8vo (10 x 13 inches). On front endpaper is pasted the business card of "Haas / Photographer / 546 Fifth Avenue New York City", presumably the studio of Robert Haas, an Austrian-born photographer. Each photo, about 5 x 8 inches, is mounted on hinged card stock on two-color under-mats, protected by glassine sheets--a very attractive presentation. Original blue calf, a little scuffed, bottom of spine worn, else fine. Witkin and London, Photograph Collector's Guide, p. 349 . An album of exceptional interest, recording the excursion of two four-in-hand coaches (one, presumably driven by Mr. Moyes) beginning at the Plaza Hotel entrance, entering and going through Central Park and up Riverside Drive (past the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument) and thence along the Hudson and into the countryside, where they pose by what is presumably the Arrowhead Inn before returning to New York. On some stretches they share the road with automobiles, and there is a particularly fetching scene of one coach and two cars at a suburban intersection under the watchful eye of a mounted police sergeant. As many as ten elegantly-dressed, carnation-wearing passengers are shown seated atop one of the vehicles, which bears the lettering: "Claremont / Washington Heights / New Rochelle / Fordham", suggesting that it may be a public coach. We have been unable to trace Mr. Moyes (he was not, apparently a member of The Coaching Club) but on this outing at least, he and his friends seem to be having a good time while it lasted, before the ubiquitous automobile curtailed the sport on public roads.
