A Negro Explorer at the North Pole

New York: Frederick A. Stokes 1912, 1st Edition. () xii,200pp. Near fine in good dust jacket. Small Octavo . Illustrated with frontispiece portrait and 3 plates (both sides) from photos. Original blue cloth with white lettering and black and white portrait of Henson mounted on front cover. Spine unfaded and without the usual flaking off of the lettering. The original dust wrapper has about 3 cm. Missing from the bottom of the spine and a larger chip on the top of the spine affecting the lettering. Also a chip on the front panel affecting the title. Old ownership signature on the front pastedown. A clean copy with no internal problems. Not in A.B. (Racism in the 1950's?), and very scarce indeed especially in the rare dust wrapper. Henson was Peary's black companion on all but his first trip to the Arctic, and the only other member on Peary's last expedition (other than Eskimos) that was allowed to go to the Pole. The book was apparently quite unsuccessful, with few copies sold. You can imagine how much attention was paid to a book by a black man in 1912. Rare in the Dust Wrapper.

Gesammelte Werke. Hrsg. von Dr. J. Schwalbe unter Mitwirkung von G. Graffky & E. Pfuhl. 2 in 3 Bde.

      - Leipzig, Verlag von Georg Thieme, 1912, Folio, XIV, 706 pp.; IV, 680 pp.; V, pp.681-1216; 1 Portraitafeln, 2 Frontisp., 194 Textabbildungen und 43 z.T. farb. Tafel., 3 feine Halbledereinbände mit Rückenvergoldung; feines Exemplar. First and only Edition of Robert Koch's collected works! - Many of the basic principles and techniques of modern bacteriology were adapted or devised by Robert Koch, who therefore is often regarded as the chief founder of that science. His isolation of the causal agents of anthrax, tuberculosis, and cholera brought him worldwide acclaim as well as leadership of the German school of bacteriology. Directly or indicrectly he influenced authorities in many countries to introduce public health legislation based on knowledge of the microbic origin of various infections, and he stimulated more enlightened popular attitudes toward hygienic and immunologic measures for controlling such diseases. So he was ranked by Paul Ehrlich among "the few princes of medical science"; and Theobald Smith- not given to loose praise- called him "the master of us all in bacteriology". Such tributes were evoked by a remarkable combination of qualities- extraordinarily methodical technique, dogged perseverance in verifying theories and fearless logic in applying findings, and tireless industry. "Nicht locker lassen" (don't let up) was a favorite exhortation to himself and associates. - Koch expressed his career's basic motivation in his first paper on tuberculosis: "I have undertaken my investigations in the interest of public health and I hope the greatest benefits will acure therefrom". In disclosing the causes from disease and expounding the means of prevention, Robert Koch at his best was unexcelled. The Faustian weaknesses and perplexeties he carried do not diminish the lasting benefits that his aspirations bestowed upon mankind. - cit. n. Claude E. Dollmann, DSB 7, p.420-434. - - Koch's complete works were published two years after his death and contain practically all 99 of his published monographs and scientific papers, as well as 92 previously unpublished reports to national, state and municipal authorities. - Vol.I contains his early classic reports on anthrax, wound infections, disinfection, and methods of isolating bacteria, and 18 other papers on tuberculosis that appeared between 1882 and 1910. Vol. II, pt.1 contains 9 publications on cholera and 30 on tropical diseases, chiefly malaria and sleeping sickness. Among the reports to governments in vol. II, pt.2, 53 deal with zoonoses, acute infectious diseases (including cholera and typhoid fever), and tropical diseases; 8 with tuberculosis; 5 with vaccination regulations and procedures; 14 with with sewage disposal and water supplies; and 12 with miscellaneous topics ranging from the denaturing of alcohol to smoke nuisances. - Heirs of Hippocrates, No. 1076; Garrison & Morton No.86; Nobel price in 1905. - These three volumes containing Garrison & Morton No. 2331-3, 2544.1, 2457, 2488, 2495.1, 2536, 2545, 5040, 5108, 5167, 5636.1, 5923, 5930. - Rare not in Cushing, Osler or Waller. Sauget in Annali dell'Istituto Universitario Orientale 45 (1985) pp. 1-16.

        The Weird of the Wanderer

London, William Rider & Son Ltd.,, 1912. Being the Papyrus Records of some Incidents in one of the Previous Lives of Mr. Nicholas Crabbe. Octavo. Original blue cloth, decoration to upper board in blind, titles to upper board and spine gilt. With the dust jacket. Trace of spotting to the fore edge but an immaculate copy in the internally backed dust jacket with some restoration at the tips of the somewhat tanned spine panel. First edition. The survival of dust jackets on copies of this book stems from a handful of copies discovered by a rare book dealer in the late 1950s. Notwithstanding none had ever been out of their packaging paper was in parlous state and he had each copy backed with Japanese paper. However this paper in turn proved not to be much better and we had had to make a further repair. Nevertheless a nice looking book and still pretty scarce in this order.

. Leipzig, Verlag von Georg Thieme, 1912, Folio, XIV, 706 pp.; IV, 680 pp.; V, pp.681-1216; 1 Portraitafeln, 2 Frontisp., 194 Textabbildungen und 43 z.T. farb. Tafel., 3 feine Halbledereinbände mit Rückenvergoldung; feines Exemplar..

32 Photos and Clippings of a Trip to the Panama Canal

1912. A collection of 32 original photographs from F.N. Barrett, editor of The American Grocer, and 25 pages of clippings from a published article detailing his trip to the Panama Canal in early 1912. The collection is composed of 22 loose photographs, measuring 5.5" x 3.5"; seven panoramic photographs, measuring 10.5" x 3.5"; and 11 additional photographs, measuring 5.5"x 3" and 4" x 3.25", tipped onto loose pages. All very good with some light wear. Also included are 25 pages of magazine clippings paralleling Barrett's journey, tipped onto stationery for The Grocery and Allied Trade Press of America, as well as one tiny tintype. Barrett journeyed from New Orleans to Panama by way of Costa Rica with another business professional, a U.S. official referred to as "the Senator," and "the Deacon," who had a "predilection to study ethnology." The accompanying article describes the voyage; each stop, including the landscape, local residents, marketplaces (giving particular detail to the American goods found: Campbell's, Franco-American, Beech-Nut, etc.); and details of the Panama dig: number of men employed, soil and rock moved, and costs of the project. The photos were taken at many of the stops along the way, with images of Barrett and his fellow travelers; a coffee plantation; native peoples, including a "Hindoo Picture Maker" (or photographer); various buildings and ruins in Panama; and canal construction. A nice travelogue during the years of American expansion in the early part of the 20th Century, from an interesting perspective. .

Typescript signed ("George Dewey") of his artcle, "Needed - A Powerful Navy"

Washington, D.C, december 7, 1912. 4to. 3 pp. on Department of the Navy letterhead; with 1 p. Typed Letter of submission, signed, to William Griffith, editor of the National Sunday Magazine, in New York City. A few light pencil marks in margin, fine in a blue cloth folder . An article for the National Sunday Magazine by Admiral Dewey (1837-1917), the hero of the Battle of Manila in the Spanish American War and the only man to ever attain the rank of Admiral of the Navy. Here is a mere excerpt: "Wars are certain to come and the nation must be prepared. The history of all ages has shown that the proper provision for peace is preparedness for war. A large Navy makes for peace and is an economical asset to the nation, possessing it. National supineness has cost us much in the past and we can not afford to have it repeated. Cornwallis was not properly supported by the Navy and England lost her colonies; Napoleon fell because Villeneuve was no match for Nelson. The Confederacy lost because the Federal Navy blockaded all its ports shutting off supplies and revenues. After Spain's navy was destroyed her colonial possessions were no longer tenable. The defeat of the Russian Navy by the Japanese decided the Russia-Japanese War. Italy in its recent war had command of the sea and Turkey had to make peace. The Greek Navy at the present time has been a powerful factor in the success of the Balkan states against Turkey. To have a weak navy courts attack, disaster and defeat. Diplomatic demands in international affairs will be heeded only if a nation has the necessary force to back them up. The navy is always all important factor in international settlements. This nation can not afford to be content, to have our navy, relegated from second to fourth or fifth place. The Spanish-American War, which lasted about one hundred days, cost us approximately five hundred million dollars - about four times the total annual expenditure for the Navy. And this does not include the yearly pensions resulting there from, to say nothing of the lives sacrificed. Fifty million dollars properly spent on battleships preceding 1898 would have made this a hopeless undertaking for Spain. The United States in recent years has become a world power necessitating the assuming of corresponding responsibilities. These obligations our representative citizens are willing to accept, but turn to our military experts for guidance, and their studies and not political or economic conditions must decide. We must have a navy not to wage but to prevent war. It must be a well balanced Navy. That is battleships with the proper proportion of auxiliaries. Such as destroyers, scouts supply, repair ships, etc.; but battleships are paramount, and the building of them must continue. It requires three years to build a battleship and they can not be bought or improvised. Battleships deteriorate and become obsolete in time -"
