Gurre-Lieder von Jens Peter Jacobsen (Deutsch von Robert Franz Arnold) für Soli, Chor und Orchester. Partitur. [Full score]

Universal-Edition [without PN] [October 1912], Wien–Leipzig - First Edition, first issue, one of only 500 copies printed. Rufer (Engl.) pp. 78-79. Ringer p. 311. Tetsuo Satoh pp. 37-38. The piano-vocal score, prepared by Alban Berg, first appeared in 1913 (U.E. 3696). An engraved full score in large format, including a number of corrections, was published in 1920 (U.E. 6300).First performed in Vienna on February 23, 1913, with Franz Schreker conducting the Vienna Philharmonic Choir and the Wiener KonzertvereinsorchesFritz Soot (1878-1965) was a German tenor. After singing a minor part at the world premiere of Strauss's Elektra (1909), he emerged as a leading singer in the 1910s. He took major parts in operas then new, including Mephistopheles in Busoni's Doktor Faust and the Tambourmajor in Berg's Wozzeck. He performed Schoenberg as early as 1913 (Vossische Zeitung, Berlin, November 17, 1913), and was considered for the part of Waldemar at the world premiere of the Gurrelieder (Schoenberg's letter to Soot of November 18, 1913). It is not known whether he sang the part on a later occasion.Richard Kraus (1902-1978), a German conductor, spent his entire career in his native country; in 1927, he took his first appointment in Kassel. "In March 1900 Schoenberg began setting Jens Peter Jacobsen’s Gurre-Lieder as a song cycle for voice and piano, for entry in a competition. However, Schoenberg soon saw wider possibilities in the text. He therefore decided to connect the songs he had already composed (those in the first two parts of the finished work) with symphonic interludes and set the whole poem as a vast cantata employing several soloists and a huge chorus and orchestra. The work depicts the love of King Waldemar and Tove under the Tristanesque imminence of death, Waldemar’s blasphemous defiance of God after Tove’s death, the nightly ride at the head of a ghostly retinue to which the king’s restless spirit is subsequently condemned, and its dismissal by the summer wind at the approach of day. Schoenberg encompassed all this in a series of tableaux of extraordinary magnificence." O. W. Neighbour in Grove onlineThe Danish poet Jens Peter Jacobsen (1847-1885) wrote his Gurresange in 1871. The German translation is by Robert Franz Arnold (1872- 1938). Large folio. Full green textured cloth, original publisher's light green printed upper wrapper bound in. 1f.       1912. Being an account of the recent amazing adventures of Professor George E. Challenger... London New York Toronto: Hodder and Stoughton, n.d. [1912]. Original dark blue cloth decorated in gilt and white. First Edition of Doyle's first Professor Challenger science fiction tale. The exploring party ventures to a lost plateau deep in the South American jungle, where dinosaurs still reign. Both the movie "Jurassic Park" and the television series "The Lost World" owe much to this book. Subsequently, Doyle wrote two more Professor Challenger novels -- THE POISON BELT (1913) and THE LAND OF MIST (1926) -- as well as two shorter Challenger tales that appeared in THE MARACOT DEEP (1929).~This was one of Doyle's favorite books; he based the character and appearance of Professor Challenger partly upon Professor Rutherford (whom he had known at Edinburgh University) and partly upon himself. In fact, the frontispiece photograph of the explorers includes Doyle himself, disguised with bushy beard and eyebrows as Challenger -- looking rather like a Neanderthal, actually. Also, in addition to various illustrations that were copied from the 1905 book EXTINCT ANIMALS (showing dinosaurs in their surroundings), there are two photographs of the "lost plateau" that Doyle himself faked, as with the frontispiece.~This is a very good-plus copy of a book quite difficult to find in desirable condition. Typically the white border on the front cover is largely worn away, but on this copy it is still mostly present (and the white lettering is largely unaffected). The spine gilt is bright, and there is essentially none of the usual foxing on the leaves within. THE LOST WORLD is often regarded as Doyle science fiction at its best. Green & Gibson A37a.

An excellent resource. * WHO WAS JOSIAH CONDER: Josiah Conder, the father of Japanese architecture of the many foreign architects invited to Japan in the last quarter of the 19th century, Conder was the man who made the biggest impact on the Japanese. A graduate of the Royal Institute of British Architects, where he was a pupil of William Burgess, Conder was awarded the institute's prestigious Soane Prize in 1876, recognition of his talent and potential. In 1877, aged 25, Conder arrived in Japan, where he served concurrently as professor of architecture at the Imperial College of Engineering, and as consultant to the Building and Repair Division of the Ministry of Public Works. He was to remain in Japan until his death in 1920, devoting his life to modernizing Japan's architectural technology. . Between 1878 and 1907, Conder designed over 50 major Western-style buildings in Tokyo. These included the Tokyo Imperial Museum in Ueno (1881), the largest brick building in Japan of its day, the Kaitakushi Bussan Urisabakijo [1881], a marketplace for selling produce from Hokkaido, and the Rokumeikan state reception hall (1883), a symbol of the Meiji government's Westernizing aspirations. Conder built in a variety of styles, ranging from Gothic to Renaissance to Tudor to Moorish, contributing to the progressive, eclectic appearance of Meiji period architecture while suggesting he was struggling to find a suitable idiom for Japan. For example, the Tokyo Imperial Museum showed Islamic Indian influence, the Kaitakushi building Victorian Gothic tendencies, and the Rokumeikan English Renaissance tastes. . For the Meiji administration, however, which sought a more mainstream European style, Conder's approach proved a little too wide-ranging, and in due course he set up his own firm, although he continued to advise the government. Conder went into private practice in 1888. His commissions included the first Mitsubishi building in the redbrick Marunouchi district of Tokyo [1894], a residence in Yushima for Hisaya Iwasaki [1896] and the Mitsui Club in Mita, used by the Mitsui family for entertaining [1913]. He paid full attention to interiors as well as exteriors, so that these residences were perfectly coordinated, and all his projects bore his distinctive touch. As the Imperial College of Engineering's chief instructor for the Engineering Science Department, Conder organized lessons and delivered lectures. His courses covered everything from ancient Egyptian through Indian to contemporary European architecture, and focused on construction techniques using wood, brick and stone. . Conder also gave demonstrations on site, such as at the Tokyo Imperial Museum, ensuring that he not only taught theory but also gave his students a solid practical training as well. . Many of Condor's pupils went on to become pillars of the Japanese architectural establishment. Among his first group of graduates were Tatsuno Kingo, who designed Tokyo Station, and Toukuma Katayama, responsible for the Akasaka Detached Palace [State Guest House]. * Condor was also a patron of Japanese arts and artists. His high watermark work on Japanese gardens stands today as the pinnacle and a classic on the subject. All of his several titles remain superb reference works on the subjects he loved and devoted his life to. The contribution from his Japanese wife was major. . He encouraged K. Ogawa a famous photographer even at that time to contribute the stunning photos for this book. Please inquire with us for other albums and individual photos by this photographer. *** THE EDITION: The 1912 revised 2 volume edition is the best of the two editions. *** CONDITION: Contents is remarkable clean, and with the tissue guards. Yeats. 1 of 300 copies printed. "Susan Langstaff Mitchell (1866 – 1926) was an Irish writer and poet, known for her satirical verse .In 1900 she travelled to London for treatment of a hearing problem associated with tuberculosis and stayed with John B. Yeats and his family .After her return to Dublin she worked as a journalist and became assistant editor of the Irish Homestead, under George Russell. Thus began a close friendship and professional relationship that would last until her death. She contributed essays, reviews, drama notes and poems, many pseudonymously. Her poems first appeared in the holiday feature of the Homestead each year, entitled ‘A Celtic Christmas.’ Some of her lyrics were contained in New Songs (1904), a collection edited by Russell which also contained pieces by Padraic Colum and Alice Milligan .She became acquainted with William Butler Yeats, Padraic Colum, George Moore and others .She published her first book of poems, Aids to the Immortality of Certain Persons in Ireland, in 1908. Its most successful piece was a parody of Rudyard Kipling's "Recessional" (Kipling, as an apologist for Empire, was fair game for Irish nationalists), entitled ‘Ode to the British Empire.’ This book was re-issued in an enlarged edition in 1913, followed by The Living Chalice. From 1923 she was sub-editor at the Irish Statesman, again under George Russell. In the last two and a half years of her life she wrote over two hundred pieces for this publication" (WIkipedia, 2015). The Cuala press was started by the Yeats sisters and operated from Churchtown.         For Eldredge's The beginnings of San Francisco, the 47 California-themed printing blocks used to produce the volume’s illustrations.

San Francisco: Pr. John C. Rankin Company (New York) 37 half-tone plates (on copper), 10 zinc cuts, all on their wood blocks; plus 3 additional plates on copper and another zinc cut, similarly mounted.. 1912 A full set of the printer's blocks prepared of the illustrations for Zoeth Skinner Eldredge's The Beginnings of San Francisco (1912), being 37 photographic half-tones on copper and 10 zinc cuts, all on wood blocks, ranging generally in size from approximately 2.5" square to 14" square, with oblong maps measuring up to 20" across. A number of the half-tones were done after drawings by Walter Francis, a California artist and illustrator who worked for the San Francisco Chronicle; a few blocks offer images of photographs, some identified as taken by W.C. Mendenhall of the U.S. Geological Survey or Captain D.D. Gaillard of the Boundary Commission; other images are said to be from paintings and a daguerrotype held privately, with another being the facsimile of a document in the John Carter Brown Library; and, indeed, some are simply "after" images in other books (e.g., The Annals of San Francisco and "Bartlett's Narrative"). The images include a dozen California maps and plans; photographic views of the Colorado Desert and an artistic sketch of "the Trail on the Gila"; portraits of prominent early Californians; several "military moments" and a plan of the Presidio in 1820; plus, notably, scenic and historic "views" including renderings of "the Palo Alto," the ports of Monterey and San Diego, Yerba Buena, and a number of street and bay scenes depicting San Francisco proper. Eldredge was a New York?-born banker and amateur historian of California whose Beginnings of San Francisco, though possibly self-published, is listed in Cowan & Cowan and described there as "of great historical value." In addition to the 47 images/blocks from that work present here, we offer four others that seem to be "related" but which we have not identified beyond establishing that they do not seem to be from the same author's History of California (1915). We must wonder, were they images prepared for the Beginnings and not used? The additional zinc-cut image of a document signed by Gaspar de Portola and two of the three additional half-tones on copper (Portola sighting San Francisco bay and the Spaniards marching to Monterey) were found as online images without clear attribution as to their physical sources; and the last, a western scene not identified, has not yet been "matched" at all. Most blocks from the Beginnings are still in or with => wrappers showing the images printed from them, as would have been convenient for the printers — these marked (as the backs of the blocks themselves sometimes are) identifying the images and/or showing that the work was completed. (The additional blocks are unwrapped and unmarked.) In sum, this => complete array of the blocks used for printing a substantial and well-regarded Titanic-era book looks like something that was put on a printing house shelf one afternoon in 1912 at the end of an ordinary project for the pressmen and simply stayed there. Seeing it in on its present PRB&M shelf, coherent and unmessed-with, is like walking up to that shelf just a little more than 100 years later. => Seeing it on its present PRB&M shelf, coherent and unmessed-with more than 100 years later, is like walking up to that shelf through one of time's ?"wrinkles.?" The paper wrappers present are variously just fine or age-toned or browned, chipped, torn along folds. ALL the blocks are in good condition; this is not a sort of thing easily damaged!

Berlin, Eberhard Frowein Verlag 1912.331 S., 2 Bll. - Vom Herausgeber Ernst Kreowski verso Titel handschriftl. gewidmet an "Engelbert Graf, Wilmersdorf 30.         The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man

Boston: Sherman, French, 1912. 1st ed. Hardcover. Very Good. 207p. Recent quarterbinding (marbled boards backed in muted red leather). 21cm. An attractively rebound copy of this important and well-written novel which was published anonymously and assumed by most contemporary reviewers to be fact not fiction. Douglas Wetmore, Johnson's law partner during his brief period in private practice, had passed for white when he attended the University of Michigan Law School and may have been a partial inspiration for the writing of this book, which was Johnson's only novel. Today, Johnson is pprobably most remembered for his efforts on behalf of the NAACP, but he also distinguished himself in many other areas (schoolteacher and principal, first African American lawyer admitted to the bar in Duval County, Florida, successful composer of popular music, US consular officer, poet and Fisk University professor).

1912. first edition. Only Poe Could Have Written The Poems Only Dulac Could Have Illustrated Them[DULAC, Edmund, illustrator]. POE, Edgar Allan. The Bells and Other Poems. With Illustrations by Edmund Dulac. London: Hodder and Stoughton, n.d. [1912]. First trade edition. Large quarto (10 7/8 x 8 1/2 in; 277 x 217 mm). Unpaginated. Twenty-eight color plates, with descriptive tissue guards. Ten black ink head-pieces on tan backgrounds and portrait of Poe on the title-page, also in black ink on tan background. Original grey-green cloth, gilt stamped on front cover with all-over Dulac design of clusters of bells and lettered in gilt. Spine lettered in gilt and with similar design. An excellent copy.?"Dulac?'s pictures for The Bells were more uniform in mood and style than groupings for almost any other book of his to this time. Although water colours, they are overstreaked with gilt in some cases, crayon in others, to produce rich haunting effects. Deep shades of blue and a special deep pink-rust predominate throughout...The Outlook, which printed, in black and white, plate 22... commented: ?'…for the book thinking people will say with grace…sometimes Dulac?'s pictures are deep-coloured and intense, sometimes dim and ghost-like. But one and all are sensitized to record impressions of unearthly beauty or horror. Only Poe could have written the poems. Only Dulac could have illustrated them.?'…Not to be overlooked here are the sophisticated ink drawings Dulac made for headpieces. Although many of the books he illustrated had small ink decorations throughout…he had not worked in this medium so fluently since the days of doing illustrations for The Pall Mall magazine (1906-1908)…As the 10 Bells headpieces show, he had now become truly masterful with his pen?"         Raid Paris Boulogne, 1912 / Andre Beaumont sur Hydroaéroplane "Donnet-Leveque" hélice Levasseur réservoir inexplosible Brionne

Paris: Mabileau & Co, 1912. Hand-coloured pochoir print. Very good condition. Andre Beaumont in a Donnet-Leveque, one of 3 models built in 1912. The plane had a 27' central float and was controlled with warping ailerons. The wording also touts a non-explosive fuel tank by Brionne. The Gamy-Montaut prints document various historical events in the early history of transportation, including Power Boat Racing, Motorcycle and Motor Car Racing, Motor Car Touring, Zeppelins and Tennis. Having observed the rapidly growing interest in cars and racing during the early years of motor cars, Ernest Montaut produced his first motoring prints in the mid-1890's, and by 1897, his drawings were pictorial records of the many races in France. Montaut's work was extremely well received in the Paris of his day, being shown in the fashionable shops of the Rue de l'Opera and Rue de la Paix, as well as in the better galleries. Marguerite Montaut, Ernest's wife, joined him in his work producing not only racing prints but also developing a fine series of aviation prints, commemorating such events as the first flights on the early European mail routes. While, Marguerite Montaut's works were occasionally signed "M. Montaut", she also used the name "Gamy", an anagram for Magy. The Gamy-Montaut prints were all produced by the pochoir process. The outlines for each image were drawn onto lithographic stones and printed. Using these uncoloured prints as a template, elaborate stencils were cut for each colour. Water-colour was then brushed onto the image through the stencil. The colouring process was quite complex, with each print taking several days to produce. The process was quite labour intensive and the studio of Gamy-Montaut employed a group of trained artists, including Nevil and Campion, to assist in the colouring.

        Account of Republican Convention 1912

Np: Privately printed, Nd. Only Edition. Wraps. Very good. Quarto; pp; 53 pages printed on rectos only; original gray wrappers, string tied with red ribbon;. A "Typewritten account of the Republican National Convention in Chicago, June 13-21, 1912, by Nicholas Roosevelt, cousin of Theodore Roosevelt. Nicholas describes traveling by train from New York to Chicago with Theodore, Edith, and Kermit Roosevelt, and other members of the election party. During the convention, Nicholas describes meeting with Chicago Tribune reporter John Callan (Cal) O'Lauglin, working with his colleague Charles P. Curtis for the Roosevelt campaign and the Progressive Party, the theft of delegates by Taft Republicans and votes for Elihu Root. Also includes details on speeches given at the convention and the response from delegates. The account was constructed from diary entries and letters N. Roosevelt wrote to family members during the convention" . OCLC listing, #43562426. OCLC locates just a single copy at the Massachusetts Historical Society Library. Also accompanying this piece is a typed letter signed, (Tls) by Nicholas Roosevelt to William Roscoe Thayer, author of "Theodore Roosevelt, An Intimate Biography". Roosevelt is verifying some times that Thayer has inquired about. It appears that he was at factual odds with O. K. Davis who was also a participant in the Chicago 1912 events and wrote, "Released For Publication". Nicholas has verified that Davis has been incorrect "and your reputation for veracity is saved". A rare opportunity to own an incredibly scarce TR piece from the Bull Moose experience. Cousin Nicholas was close to TR all his young life.

Sunshine Sketches 1st issue with quite rare Dust Jacket plus two letters and 3 B&W photos

New York: John Lane, 1912. 1st, American issue. Hard Cover. Very Good/Good. A TRUE RARITY - 1ST AMERICAN ISSUE WITH DUST JACKET OF SUNSHINE SKETCHES Leacock, Stephen. Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town. New York: John Lane, 1912. First American issue, first printing, in jacket. Brown cloth with cream lettering. The lettering is faint on the spine, and there are a few flecks missing from the upper board. Otherwise in very good condition. The jacket, featuring an illustration of Jos. Smith by Hovsh on the front panel, is in good condition. Two very small pieces are missing from the top and bottom of the spine panel. The jacket has been repaired at two places: the right side of the front panel on to the front flap; and the top of the spine panel on to the back flap. Signed in pencil on the front free endpaper by Burton E. Livingston (1875-1948), a professor of plant physiology who graduated with a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1902 and worked there as an assistant from 1899 to 1905. Leacock also attended the University of Chicago during this time period. Housed in a beautiful clam shell box executed by Felton Bookbinding. Quarter bound in dark brown gilt tooled leather, the box is in brown linen cloth with a colour copy in miniature of the jacket's front panel inset on the front of the box. Pasted on the inside of the box is the upper board and spine from another copy of the American issue of the book. Although WorldCat records approximately 26 copies of the first American issue of Sunshine Sketches, the book in jacket is a true rarity on the market. Carl Spadoni, the author A Bibliography of Stephen Leacock, includes a black-and-white copy of the jacket, which he obtained from Robert Dagg Rare Books catalogue 24 (October 1996), the only other known copy of the first American issue in jacket. Spadoni did not examine the Dagg copy because it was sold privately. No other copy in jacket has come on the market until now. The copies of the first printing described by Spadoni (A11a.1) have a cancel title, but the copy here has an integral title leaf. No copy of the first UK English edition of Sunshine Sketches in a complete jacket has been located (only the front panel is extant at the John Johnson collection at the Bodleian Library). In 2014 the Stephen Leacock Museum acquired a copy of a later printing in jacket of the first Canadian issue of Sunshine Sketches published Bell & Cockburn, the only known copy of the first Canadian issue in dust jacket. With 2 ALS written by Leacock: one to Mr. Jackson, 27 November 1918, with regard to his request for a signed photo; and the other to Mr. Newman, circa 1925, on mourning black paper letter, undoubtedly a short reply thanking Newman for his condolences on the death of Leacock's wide, Beatrix. And 3 b&w photos: Leacock circa 1940; Agnes Leacock, Leacock's mother, near a house (either hers or that of Leacock); and another with a child and a car at the same house.Without a doubt a very special mini-collection of Stephen Leacock material highlighted by a truly rare 1st American edition of Sunshine Sketches with a dust jacket. This book is on consignment with LDRB.

Barrie?'s novel The Little White Bird (1902) ?"contains the first sketches for Peter Pan. The narrator is ?'a gentle, whimsical, lonely old bachelor?', an author by profession, whose ambition is to have a son. He meets a penniless young couple whose own son David becomes a substitute in his affections. He explains to David that ?'all children in our part of London were once birds in the Kensington Gardens; and that the reason there are bars on nursery windows and a tall fender by the fire is because very little people sometimes forget that they no longer have wings, and try to fly away through the window or up the chimney.?' The central chapters of the book tell the story of one such child, Peter Pan, who ?'escaped from being a human when he was seven days old…and flew back to the Kensington Gardens?'…The Peter Pan chapters of The Little White Bird were re-issued in 1906 as Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, with colour plates by Arthur Rackham; this was the book which first made Rackham?'s work famous. It should not be confused with Peter and Wendy (1911), Barrie?'s novelization of the play Peter Pan?" (The Oxford Companion to Children?'s Literature).Latimore and Haskell, p. 40. Riall, p. 114.

The Lost Language Of Symbolism. An inquiry into the origin of certain letters, words, names, fairy-tales, folklore, and mythologies.

London: Williams and Norgate, 1912., 1912. First editions. 2 vols., large Octavo. Publisher's ribbed green cloth titled and decorated in gilt and blind to spine and front boards. Minor rubbing and bumping, some slight dustiness to the cloth and some minor edgewear, very good indeed. Internally clean, ownership to front flyleaf, the books having originally been the property of H.C.D. Chorlton before passing into the hands of W.R.M. Turtle who has taken it upon himself to cross out Chorlton and firmly inform us of his subsequent and therefore far more significant ownership. Turtle appears to have been a doctor who submitted numerous articles to The Lancet, Chorlton; a British artist. Not perhaps vital information regarding the books in question, but it entertained me. There's a spot of pencil annotation here and there, but this is nevertheless a very good, presentable copy of a scarce and fascinating work. Charming.
