Japanese lacquered accordion folded album,. 20 x 15.5 cm., lacks one of two ivory faces, else corners a. bit rubbed, contains 47 b.w. photos each ca. 14 x 8 cm.,some. a bit larger/smaller, all clean excellent images. OBSCURE !. FASCINATING EARLY PHOTO ALBUM OF TRAVEL IN JAVA & RANGOON The album has a penned dedication and presentation inside the front cover, reading: "To Cousin Percy, with love from Alfred & Thirza In Memory of Happy Days spent in Japan. Yokohama March 2nd, 1912." * This lovely album documents a journey by steam ship to Batavia, Java, then on to Rangoon, Burma. The photographs are mostly about postcard size, and are very clean and sharp images. * The photographic development process left a silver tinge to these photographs when slightly bent, it becomes more obvious. There is no fading whatsoever, each image is strong, clear and with good contrast. The photographs are mostly about postcard size, and are very clean and sharp images. * A good number of the photographs have pencil notations on the verso, telling where and who is depicted in the photograph. * The story unfolds with the inscription, and then shows Mr. & Mrs. MacNarma sitting in the garden of the Netherlands Hotel, [Batavia] Java, with one more view of others sitting in the garden. A view of some Batavia government building, with may people sitting inside the foyer in the shade and others in a horse-drawn carriage. Mr. K. Childes poses wit two native young boys in the botanical gardens, and one more of Mr. Childs and another foreigner both in pitch helmets posing. More photos relaxing in the Hotel Netherlands garden, P.C. Mockett, Mr. Mrs. Foggart, Mr. Child as well. The visitors buy tropical fruits from a native vendor in the Botanical Garden, and all pose for the camera. Batavia street scene shows a native watering the street with dual sprinkling cans before L. Dobbelmann a Dutch-owned store, with English adverts. * The group now boards a tram and begins a journey to other places around Java. The giant lily-pad pond, natives dancing in a festival, views along the railroad tracks of a native house and farm in Jami, coconut trees, native carts, and then a train stop. There are several photos with "PCM" on the verso, meaning P.C. Mockett, whom was possibly the creator of this album, at least he seems to be a central figure. * Tropical plants, a boy holding a huge umbrella, the steam train engine, natives in elaborate dress, local markets, Arrival at a large port, most likely Batavia preparing to board a ship for onward journey to Burma, and Rangoon. Shows 2 photos of the group milling about preparing to embark. * Ship-board photo of the group relaxing on the deck. Arrival at Rangoon, Burma and the memorial "Travellers Palm" tree photograph ! Native bullock cart, ship-board poses, arrival at what appears to be Thailand and its shrines. Mansion Hotel , Rangoon with their dancing girls show, Rangoon park, Rangoon Street scene and British-buildings, natives, and the Rangoon Great Pagoda. * CONDITION: The album is constructed of very firm stiff board, with four corners cut into the card to allow the insertion of photographs. The hinges are very solid and the whole is solid and not loose or otherwise shaken. A lovely example. * THE PHOTOGRAPHS: The photographs were placed into the album by its former owner or photographer, we have removed each to read the captions for cataloging and replaced them in the exact order they were found. Some seem to be out of place in that they are mixed up according to place and not all in a logical order. Regardless they remain "as is" for any future researcher to make more sense of them. Some have no captions at all. There are other captions below some of the photos in pencil on the album pages, perhaps place there later, we do not know. There remains a few pages on both sides of the double-sided album that have no photographs, this is near the end. * By and large a nice example of foreigners taking a nice journey to the Exotic South East Asian area and documenting their visit with photographic memories. * Albums of this period with such excellent photographic images so well preserved are unusual, and seldom found on the market. *** Color scans can be sent by email.       Dourdan: 1912. Dourdan:, 1912 - 1914; 1921 - 1922.. Dourdan: 1912 - 1914; 1921 - 1922.. First, second and fourth years of this rare French architectural monthly highlighting the current taste in bourgeois French domestic architecture in the periods immediately before and after the First world War. The first two years, included here, do not appear in OCLC, CCFR or in any other online catalogue we have been able to consult. The Bibliothèque Nationale only holds a broken run beginning in 1921 and ending in 1937. The BNF catalogue gives 1918 as the date when publication began, but this is clearly an error based on deduction from the fact that each year contained 48 text pages and the volume for 1921 begins with page number 145. In fact, the periodical began publication in April 1912 and continued in monthly parts until it was suspended for 6 years after the outbreak of the First World War. The work appeared in monthly parts with each issue consisting, initially, of four printed illustrated pages of text and 4 loose plates. Each issue is devoted primarily to a single building. The pre-war issues focus on contemporary bourgeois houses, mostly characterised as "villas" or, in a few cases, as maisons de campagne, along with an occasional hôtel particulier. A colour pochoir "aquarelle" plate for each issue will generally show an elevation of the featured building while the remaining 3 monochrome plates give a variety of architectural details. The name of architects, owners and locations of the properties are provided. The post-war issues, however, switch noticeably away from the emphasis on private dwellings and also include larger and more institutional structures intended for a variety of uses such as hospitals, social housing, agricultural buildings, a war memorial and a few more modest homes.The number of printed pages doubles in 1921 and the variety of subject matter also expands to include presentation of more than one building and notes on a variety of practical subjects including recent legislation of interest to architects and builders. On the front wrapper of the first issue the name of the architect, A. Gelbert, is given as director and editor-in-chief. None of the individual articles are signed, so we presume that Gelbert was the author as well as the editor. All of the illustrations from the pre-war issues, including the colour plates, are also signed by him. Most of the illustrations in the post-war issues are unsigned, although there are a few that were drawn and signed by the architect. However, Gelbert's name continues to appear in the masthead illustration, which was redrawn monthly, so we conclude that the publication remained under his direction. Although a few colour plates can be found for sale online, complete volumes are very rare. OCLC and CCFR show only the holding at BNF, which starts with volume 4 (1921). We find no copies of the two pre-war volumes anywhere online.         For Eldredge's The beginnings of San Francisco, the 47 California-themed printing blocks used to produce the volume’s illustrations.

      San Francisco: Pr. John C. Rankin Company (New York) 37 half-tone plates (on copper), 10 zinc cuts, all on their wood blocks; plus 3 additional plates on copper and another zinc cut, similarly mounted.. 1912 A full set of the printer's blocks prepared of the illustrations for Zoeth Skinner Eldredge's The Beginnings of San Francisco (1912), being 37 photographic half-tones on copper and 10 zinc cuts, all on wood blocks, ranging generally in size from approximately 2.5" square to 14" square, with oblong maps measuring up to 20" across. A number of the half-tones were done after drawings by Walter Francis, a California artist and illustrator who worked for the San Francisco Chronicle; a few blocks offer images of photographs, some identified as taken by W.C. Mendenhall of the U.S. Geological Survey or Captain D.D. Gaillard of the Boundary Commission; other images are said to be from paintings and a daguerrotype held privately, with another being the facsimile of a document in the John Carter Brown Library; and, indeed, some are simply "after" images in other books (e.g., The Annals of San Francisco and "Bartlett's Narrative"). The images include a dozen California maps and plans; photographic views of the Colorado Desert and an artistic sketch of "the Trail on the Gila"; portraits of prominent early Californians; several "military moments" and a plan of the Presidio in 1820; plus, notably, scenic and historic "views" including renderings of "the Palo Alto," the ports of Monterey and San Diego, Yerba Buena, and a number of street and bay scenes depicting San Francisco proper. Eldredge was a New York–born banker and amateur historian of California whose Beginnings of San Francisco, though possibly self-published, is listed in Cowan & Cowan and described there as "of great historical value." In addition to the 47 images/blocks from that work present here, we offer four others that seem to be "related" but which we have not identified beyond establishing that they do not seem to be from the same author's History of California (1915). We must wonder, were they images prepared for the Beginnings and not used? The additional zinc-cut image of a document signed by Gaspar de Portola and two of the three additional half-tones on copper (Portola sighting San Francisco bay and the Spaniards marching to Monterey) were found as online images without clear attribution as to their physical sources; and the last, a western scene not identified, has not yet been "matched" at all. Most blocks from the Beginnings are still in or with => wrappers showing the images printed from them, as would have been convenient for the printers — these marked (as the backs of the blocks themselves sometimes are) identifying the images and/or showing that the work was completed. (The additional blocks are unwrapped and unmarked.) In sum, this => complete array of the blocks used for printing a substantial and well-regarded Titanic-era book looks like something that was put on a printing house shelf one afternoon in 1912 at the end of an ordinary project for the pressmen and simply stayed there. Seeing it in on its present PRB&M shelf, coherent and unmessed-with, is like walking up to that shelf just a little more than 100 years later. => Seeing it on its present PRB&M shelf, coherent and unmessed-with more than 100 years later, is like walking up to that shelf through one of time's “wrinkles.” The paper wrappers present are variously just fine or age-toned or browned, chipped, torn along folds. The proceedings of the first international Solvay Conference on physics, devoted to radiation theory and the quanta. The purpose of the conference was twofold: "First, there was the need to examine whether classical theories (molecular-kinetic theory and electrodynamics) could, in some undiscovered ways, provide an explanation of the problem of black-body radiation and of the specific heat of polyatomic substances at low temperatures; secondly, to consider phenomena in which the theory of quanta could be successfully used" (Mehra, The Solvay Conferences on Physics, p. 14; see also pp. 13-72, containing summaries of all the papers delivered). Among the participants were Max Planck, who gave an exposition of the arguments that had led him to the discovery of the quantum of action; Heike Kamerlingh Onnes, who reported on the discovery of superconductivity of certain metals at extremely low temperatures; Arnold Sommerfeld, who discussed the production of x-rays by high speed electrons; and Albert Einstein, who summarized many aspects of the quantum concept, particularly in regard to his explanation of the anomalies of specific heats at low temperatures. This copy bears the signature of Earl F. Farnau, Associate Professor of Chemistry at the University of Cincinnati; it was later owned by Russian-American physicist Boris Podolsky (1896-1966), best known for his collaboration with Albert Einstein and Nathan Rosen on the famous "EPR" (Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen) paper ("Can quantum-mechanical description of physical reality be considered complete?," 1935) challenging the assumption that quantum mechanics could provide a complete description of physical reality.       An octavo, bound in original olive green cloth with gilt spine title and pictorial pastedown on the upper cover.  Jessie King did the illustrations for this book by taking her watercolors and paper with her early in the morning to capture the play of light on the Seine.  It was first published by Gowan and Gray in 1911, with the French language edition following in 1912.  There were only 1,000 copies of the book printed, far fewer with the French text than the English.  Eighteen color plates by King capture her affection for the city she and E.A. Taylor loved nearly as much as their village home of Kirkcudbright.  There is some light browning and foxing, else a fine copy of a scarce title.  The color cover illustration, different than the one used on the English edition, was lacking and has been supplied in facsimile.  The book beautifully captures the artist's unique combination of technical skill and romantic whimsy.       1912. Hi, Here we have a rare 1912 Original Hardback Wisden, in good to Very Good Condition. The 17th Wisden Hardback. The lettering (gilt) is bright and strong to both the front and spine. The boards are good, odd mark but still nice. The hinges are weak but far from broken, just not springy, nice and clean inside and a great photoplate. Minimal foxing. No restoration. Book produced which showed everything on exhibition at the Vienna sporting exhibition. Hundreds of text ill plus many full page photogravures with tissue guards. A monumental work on European game. Text in German. The binding is gilt stamped suede. 14.5" high, 11 inches wide. The front cover has deco gilt vertical rules and pointers to the right side of a stag head, the spine has the same rules and the stag skull, and the rear board is the same except that it is the left side. Deco end papers. This is a very rare item. Internally near fine. The corners are slightly rolled but the rest of the cover is vg+, showing that this has been well cared for. See all images.

Sein Zugang zur Kunst blieb wissenschaftlich geprägt. Systematisch schrieb er Beobachtungen zur Farbenwirkung nieder im Hinblick auf eine Theorie von objektiver Gültigkeit. Nach kurzer Ausbildungszeit in der Kunstschule Anton Azbès und an der Akademie bei Franz Stuck unterrichtete K. in der "Phalanx" selbst, u.a. Gabriele Münter. Mit ihr unternahm er Reisen nach Holland, Tunesien und Italien und verbrachte das Jahr 1906/07 in Sèvres bei Paris. Seit 1908 ließen sich beide wieder in München nieder und malten während der Sommermonate gemeinsam mit Alexej Jawlensky und Marianne von Werefkin in Murnau (Oberbayern) sowie mit Franz Marc in Sindelsdorf. Die Jahre bis 1914 waren von kunstpolitischem Engagement Kandinskys geprägt, der Künstler auf internationaler Ebene miteinander in Verbindung bringen wollte: Er leitete 1909 die "Neue Künstlervereinigung München", gab mit Marc 1912 den Almanach Der Blaue Reiter heraus und organisierte zwei Ausstellungen der "Redaktion des Blauen Reiter". In very good condition. 44 pp., (2 ll.). *** FIRST EDITION of Sá-Carneiro's first separately published work (he had contributed poems, stories, and other short pieces to a school newspaper earlier), and the only drama by him published during his lifetime. It was written in collaboration with his friend from school, Tomás Cabreira, who committed suicide at age 16, before the play was printed. Sá-Carneiro was a devoté of the theater, and founded a group of drama-lovers (the Sociedade de Amadores Dramaticos referred to on the title page?), for which he wrote and translated plays while still in school. Of these, @O Vencido was performed in 1905 and @Irmãos in 1913, but the manuscripts for both were lost; another, @Alma, was not published until 1982. @Amizade was excluded from Sá-Carneiro's works as edited by his close friend Fernando Pessoa. In the same year as @Amizade appeared, Sá-Carneiro also published a collection of short stories, @Princípio. In the Lisbon, Biblioteca Nacional catalogue of Sá-Carneiro's works @Amizade is cited before @Princípio, but which appeared first is not stated outright (p. 66).Mário Sá-Carneiro (1890-1916) was a major figure in the Modernist movement in Portugal and a contributor to @Orpheu. Distinguishing between 'inventions' and 'innovations', he stressed the fact that scientific and technical inventions amount to nothing unless they are adopted, which calls for as much daring and imagination as the original act of discovery by the scientist or engineer. Furthermore, the 'innovations' that count for economic progress consist of much more than the new machines that capture popular attention: they take the form of new products, new sources of supply, new forms of industrial and financial organisation just as much as of new methods of production. An excellent resource. * WHO WAS JOSIAH CONDER: Josiah Conder, the father of Japanese architecture of the many foreign architects invited to Japan in the last quarter of the 19th century, Conder was the man who made the biggest impact on the Japanese. A graduate of the Royal Institute of British Architects, where he was a pupil of William Burgess, Conder was awarded the institute's prestigious Soane Prize in 1876, recognition of his talent and potential. In 1877, aged 25, Conder arrived in Japan, where he served concurrently as professor of architecture at the Imperial College of Engineering, and as consultant to the Building and Repair Division of the Ministry of Public Works. He was to remain in Japan until his death in 1920, devoting his life to modernizing Japan's architectural technology. . Between 1878 and 1907, Conder designed over 50 major Western-style buildings in Tokyo. These included the Tokyo Imperial Museum in Ueno (1881), the largest brick building in Japan of its day, the Kaitakushi Bussan Urisabakijo [1881], a marketplace for selling produce from Hokkaido, and the Rokumeikan state reception hall (1883), a symbol of the Meiji government's Westernizing aspirations. Conder built in a variety of styles, ranging from Gothic to Renaissance to Tudor to Moorish, contributing to the progressive, eclectic appearance of Meiji period architecture while suggesting he was struggling to find a suitable idiom for Japan. For example, the Tokyo Imperial Museum showed Islamic Indian influence, the Kaitakushi building Victorian Gothic tendencies, and the Rokumeikan English Renaissance tastes. . For the Meiji administration, however, which sought a more mainstream European style, Conder's approach proved a little too wide-ranging, and in due course he set up his own firm, although he continued to advise the government. Conder went into private practice in 1888. His commissions included the first Mitsubishi building in the redbrick Marunouchi district of Tokyo [1894], a residence in Yushima for Hisaya Iwasaki [1896] and the Mitsui Club in Mita, used by the Mitsui family for entertaining [1913]. He paid full attention to interiors as well as exteriors, so that these residences were perfectly coordinated, and all his projects bore his distinctive touch. As the Imperial College of Engineering's chief instructor for the Engineering Science Department, Conder organized lessons and delivered lectures. His courses covered everything from ancient Egyptian through Indian to contemporary European architecture, and focused on construction techniques using wood, brick and stone. . Conder also gave demonstrations on site, such as at the Tokyo Imperial Museum, ensuring that he not only taught theory but also gave his students a solid practical training as well. . Many of Condor's pupils went on to become pillars of the Japanese architectural establishment. Among his first group of graduates were Tatsuno Kingo, who designed Tokyo Station, and Toukuma Katayama, responsible for the Akasaka Detached Palace [State Guest House]. * Condor was also a patron of Japanese arts and artists. The piano-vocal score, prepared by Alban Berg, first appeared in 1913 (U.E. 3696). An engraved full score in large format, including a number of corrections, was published in 1920 (U.E. 6300). First performed in Vienna on February 23, 1913, with Franz Schreker conducting the Vienna Philharmonic Choir and the Wiener Konzertvereinsorches Fritz Soot (1878-1965) was a German tenor. After singing a minor part at the world premiere of Strauss's Elektra (1909), he emerged as a leading singer in the 1910s. He took major parts in operas then new, including Mephistopheles in Busoni's Doktor Faust and the Tambourmajor in Berg's Wozzeck. He performed Schoenberg as early as 1913 (Vossische Zeitung, Berlin, November 17, 1913), and was considered for the part of Waldemar at the world premiere of the Gurrelieder (Schoenberg's letter to Soot of November 18, 1913). It is not known whether he sang the part on a later occasion. Richard Kraus (1902-1978), a German conductor, spent his entire career in his native country; in 1927, he took his first appointment in Kassel. "In March 1900 Schoenberg began setting Jens Peter Jacobsen’s Gurre-Lieder as a song cycle for voice and piano, for entry in a competition... However, Schoenberg soon saw wider possibilities in the text... He therefore decided to connect the songs he had already composed (those in the first two parts of the finished work) with symphonic interludes and set the whole poem as a vast cantata employing several soloists and a huge chorus and orchestra. The work depicts the love of King Waldemar and Tove under the Tristanesque imminence of death, Waldemar’s blasphemous defiance of God after Tove’s death, the nightly ride at the head of a ghostly retinue to which the king’s restless spirit is subsequently condemned, and its dismissal by the summer wind at the approach of day. Afm 44 x 64 cm.Lionello Balestrieri (1872-1958) was van eenvoudige komaf. Hij genoot z"n opleiding aan het Istituto di Belle Arti in Rome en Napels en werd onderwezen door Domenico Morelli en Gioacchino Toma. In 1897 verhuisde hij naar Parijs waar hij in eerste instantie hij z"n brood verdiende als illustrator.Op de Wereldtentoonstelling van 1900 won Balestrieri een gouden medaille en werd benoemd tot voorzitter van de Vereniging van Italiaanse kunstenaars in Parijs.In 1911 ging hij naar Bretagne, waar hij in contact kwam met werk van de postimpressionistische Pont-Aven kunstenaars (waaronder Gaugin), die hem sterk beïnvloedden. Zijn palet wordt lichter van kleur en hij wordt aangetrokken door de overheersende stijl van deze periode, de Art Nouveau.
