        Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens

1912. The 1912 Rackham Peter Pan[RACKHAM, Arthur, illustrator]. BARRIE, J.M. Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens. From The Little White Bird by J.M. Barrie. A New Edition. Illustrated by Arthur Rackham. London: n.d. [1912]. First trade edition, later issue, of the 1912 new edition (second Rackham edition) with a new color frontispiece and an additional seven full-page black and white plates. Publisher's original smooth green cloth pictorially stamped on front cover and spine, plain green endpapers. Gilt on spine very slightly dull. The small vignettes on the title-page have been very nicely colored. A very good copy.Rackham first illustrated Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens in 1906 with just fifty mounted color plates.J.M. Barrie?s novel The Little White Bird (1902) ?contains the first sketches for Peter Pan. The narrator is ?a gentle, whimsical, lonely old bachelor?, an author by profession, whose ambition is to have a son. He meets a penniless young couple whose own son David becomes a substitute in his affections. He explains to David that ?all children in our part of London were once birds in the Kensington Gardens; and that the reason there are bars on nursery windows and a tall fender by the fire is because very little people sometimes forget that they no longer have wings, and try to fly away through the window or up the chimney.? The central chapters of the book tell the story of one such child, Peter Pan, who ?escaped from being a human when he was seven days old?and flew back to the Kensington Gardens??The Peter Pan chapters of The Little White Bird were re-issued in 1906 as Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, with colour plates by Arthur Rackham; this was the book which first made Rackham?s work famous. It should not be confused with Peter and Wendy (1911), Barrie?s novelization of the play Peter Pan? (The Oxford Companion to Children?s Literature).Latimore and Haskell, p. 40. Riall, p. 114.

Leinenbände; Einbände etas beschabt, weinge Seiten fleckig. First and only Edition of Robert Koch's collected works! - Many of the basic principles and techniques of modern bacteriology were adapted or devised by Robert Koch, who therefore is often regarded as the chief founder of that science. His isolation of the causal agents of anthrax, tuberculosis, and cholera brought him worldwide acclaim as well as leadership of the German school of bacteriology. Directly or indicrectly he influenced authorities in many countries to introduce public health legislation based on knowledge of the microbic origin of various infections, and he stimulated more enlightened popular attitudes toward hygienic and immunologic measures for controlling such diseases. So he was ranked by Paul Ehrlich among "the few princes of medical science"; and Theobald Smith- not given to loose praise- called him "the master of us all in bacteriology". Such tributes were evoked by a remarkable combination of qualities- extraordinarily methodical technique, dogged perseverance in verifying theories and fearless logic in applying findings, and tireless industry. "Nicht locker lassen" (don't let up) was a favorite exhortation to himself and associates. - Koch expressed his career's basic motivation in his first paper on tuberculosis: "I have undertaken my investigations in the interest of public health and I hope the greatest benefits will acure therefrom". In disclosing the causes from disease and expounding the means of prevention, Robert Koch at his best was unexcelled. The Faustian weaknesses and perplexeties he carried do not diminish the lasting benefits that his aspirations bestowed upon mankind. - cit. n. Claude E. Dollmann, DSB 7, p.420-434. - - Koch's complete works were published two years after his death and contain practically all 99 of his published monographs and scientific papers, as well as 92 previously unpublished reports to national, state and municipal authorities. - Vol.I contains his early classic reports on anthrax, wound infections, disinfection, and methods of isolating bacteria, and 18 other papers on tuberculosis that appeared between 1882 and 1910. Vol. II, pt.1 contains 9 publications on cholera and 30 on tropical diseases, chiefly malaria and sleeping sickness. Among the reports to governments in vol. II, pt.2, 53 deal with zoonoses, acute infectious diseases (including cholera and typhoid fever), and tropical diseases; 8 with tuberculosis; 5 with vaccination regulations and procedures; 14 with with sewage disposal and water supplies; and 12 with miscellaneous topics ranging from the denaturing of alcohol to smoke nuisances. - Heirs of Hippocrates, No. 1076; Garrison & Morton No.86; Nobel price in 1905. - These three volumes containing Garrison & Morton No. 2331-3, 2544.1, 2457, 2488, 2495.1, 2536, 2545, 5040, 5108, 5167, 5636.1, 5923, 5930. - Rare not in Cushing, Osler or Waller.         Hrad smrti [The castle of death. Illustrated with color woodcuts by Josef Váchal].

Prague: self-published 1912 - Quarto (23.6 × 18 cm). Contemporary gilt-ruled tan morocco binding with black inlays by Ant. Stelibský after a design by J. Solar; 51 pp. With eleven original color woodcuts by Váchal (frontispiece, title, nine leaves of plates with tissue guards). Signed by Deml to half title. Lacking the original pictorial wrappers. A few pages very lightly finger-marked, else very good. First edition of this expressionistic “found” prose poem by Jakub Deml (1878–1961), one of the most bizarre and enigmatic figures of Czech interwar literature. A Catholic priest from rural Moravia, Deml constantly appeared to rebel against the church, maintained suspiciously close ties to various female muses, and was involved in numerous public scandals, while producing an enormous body of written work, often published in small bibliophile editions. He is now considered an important representative of Czech modernist literature and writers such as VitÄ›zslav Nezval considered Deml‘s highly associative texts to be related to his own surrealist experiments. He also maintained close contacts to contemporary artists, such as František Bílek. Deml’s friendship with the painter and printmaker Váchal—an almost equally complex and difficult person—was short and intense, but it resulted in the present early collaboration. Váchal‘s ominous black and yellow woodcuts complement and complete Deml’s brooding, difficult dream-inspired prose poem about life after death. In a striking artistic morocco binding that manifests its own interpretation of the “castle of death” image. One of 500 copies printed. Sánka 183. KVK, OCLC show copies at British Library, University of Chicago, Harvard, Toronto, and Yale only. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Sr. Dr. Camillo Pessanha.

Macau, Typ. Mercantil de N.T. Fernandes e Filhos, 1912. - 8°, twentieth century (third quarter?) half brown morocco over marbled boards, spine with raised bands in five unequal compartments, gilt fillets and lettering, marbled endleaves, original gray printed wrappers bound in. Some slight toning and occasional very light foxing. In very good condition. (1 blank l., 2 ll.), lxi, 64 pp., (1 blank l.). *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION. The interesting preface by Camilo Pessanha (dated 1912) occupies almost half the book. The main text has a chapter on traces of ancient civilization in China (including a page of music transcriptions) and a second on the gradual decadence of Chinese civilization and customs. This is a fascinating look at China barely a decade after the Boxer Rebellion, with comments on feng shui (fong soy, pp. 34-5), yin and yang (pp. 13-4), Taoism (p. 16), the cult of the dead, the emperor's library (pp. 25-6), bonzo (self-immolation, p. 39), and magic and superstition.Camilo [de Almeida] Pessanha (1867-1926) helped found the Portuguese symbolist movement while studying at the University of Coimbra, where he and several friends (Eugénio de Castro, António Nobre, Alberto de Oliveira and Alberto Osório de Castro) published Os Insubmissos and Boémia Nova. Pessanha seems to have been indifferent about whether his own works were published, and only a few of his poems appeared in the 1880's and 1890's, scattered in periodicals. In 1894 he left for Macau, where he spent most of the rest of his life. On a trip back to Lisbon in 1916, he dictated many of his works (which he knew by heart, and rarely wrote down), some of which appeared in the review Centauro. Clepsydra, his most famous work, appeared four years later, from the press of his cousin Ana de Castro Osório. He exerted a significant influence on the first generation of Portuguese modernists. J. Antonio Filippe de Moraes Palha was a friend of Camilo Pessanha who appears to have spent considerable time in Macau. In addition to the present book, he wrote De Portugal a Macau através da historia, as well as a book on public health in Macau.*** Gomes, Bibliografia macaense 1159 (without mention of the 2 unnumbered preliminary leaves, or the initial and final blanks). On Camilo Pessanha, see Saraiva & Lopes, História da literatura portuguesa (16th ed.) pp. 1023-4, 1032-3, et passim; Fernando Guimarães in Machado, ed., Dicionário de literatura portuguesa, pp. 375-6; J.C. Seabra Pereira in Biblos, IV, 94-103; Dicionário cronológico de autores portugueses, III, 54-7. Also João Gaspar Simões, "Camilo Pessanha," Encyclopedia Britannica (1972) XVII, 725. Porbase locates two copies, both in the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal (calling for lxx preliminary leaves, certainly a misprint; Harvard, Yale and National Library of Australia all say lxi preliminary leaves). Not located in Copac. KVK (44 databases searched) locates only the copies already mentioned in the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal and National Library of Australia.         The South Pole: An Account of the Norwegian Antarctic Expedition in the "Fram," 1910-1912

Two volumes. First English edition,; 8vo; Volume I portrait frontispiece, two maps, 84 mostly photographic illustrations; Volume II three maps and two folding charts and plans, 53 mostly photographic illustrations; original maroon cloth, upper covers with red border enclosing image of Norwegian flag and lettered in gilt, spines with image of Norwegian flag and lettered in gilt, top edges gilt. The South Pole was published three months before Scott's death. As Kossow states it is to the publishers credit that they produced this set of real quality, incorporating the Norwegian flag, "despite realising that British disappointment at being beaten to the Pole would ensure that it was not a publishing success in the UK." A fine set some browning to endpapers, some light spotting to the page edges, in Volume II, there is a short repaired tear to the folding map, slight wear to head and foot of spines, extremities very lightly rubbed. A lovely set not often found in this condition.

(p. 215). Vorhanden sind Band I: Nervöse Angstzustände und ihre Behandlung. 1912 (2. Aufl.); Band II: Onanie und Homosexualität. Die homosexuelle Parapathie. 1923; Band III: Die Geschlechtskälte der Frau. Eine Psychopathologie des weiblichen Liebeslebens. 1920; Band IV: Die Impotenz des Mannes. Die psychischen Störungen der männlichen Sexualfunktion. 1920; Band V: Psychosexueller Infantilismus. Die seelischen Kinderkrankheiten der Erwachsenen. 1922; Band VI: Impulshandlungen. Wandertrieb, Dipsomanie, Kleptomanie, Pyromanie und verwandte Zustände. 1922; Band VII: Der Fetischismus. Dargestellt für Ärzte und Kriminalogen (!). 1923; Band VIII: Sadismus und Masochismus. 1925; Band IX: Zwang und Zweifel. Für Ärzte und Mediziner dargestellt. Erster Teil. 1927; Band X: Zwang und Zweifel. Für Ärzte und Mediziner dargestellt. Zweiter Teil. 1928. - "Stekel was a prolific writer, producing fifty books (many of them for a general readership), hundreds of newspaper articles, and numerous scientific papers. The most important part of Stekel`s psychoanalytical work is contained in his ten-volume Störungen des Trieb- und Affektlebens (Disturbances of the impulses and the emotions). The first volume was Conditions of Nervous Anxiety and Their Treatment (1923). It was followed by volumes on masturbation and homosexuality, frigidity in women, impotence in men, psycho-sexual infantilism, peculiarities of behavior, fetishism, sadism and masochism, and finally two volumes on compulsion and doubt" (Intern.
