SHIPPING CASUALTIES (LOSS OF THE STEAMSHIP "TITANIC.") REPORT OF A FORMAL INVESTIGATION INTO THE CIRCUMSTANCES ATTENDING THE FOUNDERING ON 15th APRIL, 1912, OF THE BRITISH STEAMSHIP "TITANIC" OF LIVERPOOL, AFTER STRIKING ICE.

London. 1912. - [2],74pp. Folio. Dbd. Minor wear. Very good. In a blue cloth folder. Uncommon first edition of the official report on the sinking of the Titanic, providing a full accounting of the ship's technical specifications, its journey, and the disaster which took it to the bottom of the North Atlantic. The report gives an account of the damage, saying that water rushed in at such a rate that "the ship's pumps could not possibly have coped, so that the damage done to these five compartments alone inevitably sealed the doom of the ship." The account of rescue gives a breakdown of passengers and crew who made it into the lifeboats: "The real difficulty in dealing with the question of the boats is to find the explanation of so many of them leaving the ship with comparatively few persons in them." Statistical analysis, delineated herein, shows what was to be expected - women and children had the highest survival rate, while first and second class passengers had better luck in getting into the boats than did those passengers in steerage. The report makes a point, however, of stating unequivocally that third class passengers were not treated unfairly, and that those steerage passengers who spoke English (and therefore, presumably, understood what was going on) were mostly saved. A fascinating and detailed accounting of this most significant of shipping disasters.

THE LIFE OF CESARE BORGIA [inscribed]

1912 - [inscribed by Sabatini] A History and Some Criticisms. With a Coloured Frontispiece and Sixteen Other Illustrations in Half-tone. London: Stanley Paul & Co., n.d.[1912]. 32 pp ads, undated (but with this title listed second in the list of new announcements, and with 1910 and 1911 cited elsewhere). Original black cloth lettered in gilt, with dust jacket. First Edition of this very early historical work by Sabatini, about a decade before he hit it big with "swashbuckling" tales such as SCARAMOUCHE and CAPTAIN BLOOD. Born of an Italian father and an English mother, and educated in Portugal and Switzerland, Sabatini (1875-1950) was fluent in five languages by the time he was eighteen; he would soon have a position in the Intelligence Department of the War Office during the Great War.~The Sabatini website cites a 48-page ad catalogue, but we think it is quite possible that this catalogue may precede: the only dates appearing in this catalogue are 1910 and 1911, and the inscription (below) is dated January 1912 (the month of publication). This is a near-fine copy, the only real flaw being some small holes in the cloth at the joints (one fore-corner also shows some wear); included is the 1912 dust jacket (red printed in black), in good-to-very good condition (a large chip at the bottom of the front panel, other minor edge-wear but nothing affecting print, spine slightly faded).~THIS IS AN INSCRIBED PRESENTATION COPY, with the author's ink inscription on the title verso "To Herbert Jarman from Rafael Sabatini London 17 Jany 1912". Jarman was an actor and occasional assistant producer on the London stage -- for example, not long before this inscription, Jarman had starred as Louis XIII in the 1911 stage production of "Bardelys the Magnificent," adapted by Sabatini and Henry Hamilton from Sabatini's 1906 novel of the same title (our thanks to Sabatini biographer Ruth Heredia for this information). This early Sabatini title is scarce; in dust jacket it is very scarce; and inscribed it is extremely scarce. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Marriage

1912 - WELLS, H.G. Marriage. London: Macmillan, 1912. Octavo, original green blind-stamped cloth, top edge gilt. $2250.First edition of this novel, inscribed by Wells on the front free endpaper, "R.A.G. from H.G." Presented to and from the collection of Wells' close friend and frequent scientific adviser, Sir Richard Arman Gregory."The marriage in question is that of Marjorie Pope to Richard Trafford, a scientific researcher who dramatically enters her life when his plane crashes on a vicarage lawn. Marjorie's expensive tastes force Trafford to give up pure research and work in industry. Wealthy but unfulfilled, the couple eventually retreat to a hut in Labrador where Trafford is injured by a lynx, but Marjorie nurses him back to health and the two resolve to embark on a new way of life serving human progress. For this big, serious novel Wells had taken [Henry] James' advice and switched to the third person to increase perspective". James told Wells that the story was interesting, but it was the story of Wells' ongoing life and thought that interested him rather than those of the characters" (Sherborne, 215-16). With eight pages of publisher's advertisements at rear. Hammond A8. Wells 46. Inscribed to noted British scientist and Wells' lifelong friend Sir Richard Arman Gregory. In Wells' first work of fiction, he dedicated the work to Gregory as his "dearest friend." The two met while students at the Normal School of Science in South Kensington. They jointly authored a textbook, Honours Physiography, in 1891. Reportedly, Gregory was the one person with whom Wells never quarreled. A professor of astronomy, Gregory also possessed expertise in physics, chemistry and other disciplines; he wrote several textbooks and eventually assumed the editorship of the journal Nature, to which Wells frequently contributed. The author often turned to Gregory, and to the experts Gregory contacted on Wells' behalf, for insight and encouragement when writing his famous "scientific romances." After Wells' death, Gregory worked to establish the H.G. Wells Memorial to preserve public attention to his friend's body of work. Throughout his life Gregory was a passionate advocate for science"""It is necessary to believe in the holiness of scientific work," he once declared""and "an optimist about man's future" (Horrabin, in New Scientist, April 11, 1957).A clean, fresh, about-fine inscribed association copy.         Thermodynamische Begründung des photochemischen Äquivalentgesetzes. [With:] Nachtrag zu meiner Arbeit: Thermodynamische Begründung des photochemischen Äquivalentgesetzes.

Johann Ambrosius Barth, Leipzig 1912 - First edition, extremely rare author?s presentation offprints (with ?Überreicht vom Verfasser? (Presented by the Author) printed on front wrappers), and the copies of Einstein?s son Hans Albert, of Einstein?s formulation of the photochemical equivalence law. This is a fundamental principle relating to chemical reactions induced by light, which states that for every quantum of radiation (photon) absorbed, one molecule of the affected substance reacts. Einstein?s formulation, founded on thermodynamics, marks the first application of quantum theory to photochemistry; it was one of his last significant contributions to quantum theory. The photochemical equivalence law is also known as the Einstein-Stark law: the German experimental physicist Johannes Stark had published his own derivation of it in 1908, but at that time Stark did not agree with Einstein?s views on the corpuscular nature of radiation, writing: ?In my opinion it is not necessary to postulate a discontinuous structure of the radiation energy, which flows with the velocity of light in ether? (quoted in Mehra & Rechenberg, p. 103). OCLC lists only two locations (King?s College London and Swiss National Library for the main work, the latter only for the ?Nachtrag?); no other copy in auction records (neither of these papers were in Einstein?s own reference collection of offprints in the Richard Green Library).Provenance: Hans Albert Einstein (1904-1973), Swiss-American engineer and educator, and the second child and first son of Albert Einstein and Mileva Mari (ownership stamp on front wrapper). He moved to the US in 1938, and spent most of his career at the University of California, Berkeley, where he was a professor of hydraulic engineering.Einstein?s work on the photochemical equivalence law came at a time of crisis in his attitude to the quantum theory of radiation. Einstein had first put forward the idea of light quanta in 1905, but in later years he came to doubt the validity of the idea, despite its earlier success in explaining the photoelectric effect. In May 1911, ?Einstein confided to [Michel] Besso his doubts on the existence of quanta in general: ?I no longer ask myself if these quanta really exist. And I do not try any more to construct them because I now know that my brain is unable to do it. But I still explore the consequences as carefully as I can to learn the range of validity of this idea.? In February 1912 he wrote to Hopf: ?Quanta certainly do what they ought to, but they do not exist, like the immovable ether. At the moment, the latter is turning diligently in its grave intending to come to life again ? poor fellow? ? [Einstein] no longer sought to ?construct? quanta and instead tried to see how far quantum results could be obtained without quantum discontinuity: ?After many fruitless attempts,? he wrote in the same letter [to Wien in May 1912], ?I too have come to the conclusion that one will not be able to put the theory of radiation on its feet merely by constructing models. This is why I tried to formulate new questions through pure thermodynamics, without making use of a picture.? The first yield of this new strategy was a derivation of an obvious consequence of the light quantum hypothesis, the law of photochemical equivalence, without light quanta [the first offered paper]? (Cambridge Companion to Einstein, pp. 131-2). Einstein derived the photochemical equivalence law using thermodynamics; the fact that this law is consistent with the conclusion one would derive from the light quantum hypothesis lends support to that hypothesis.Einstein?s paper on the photochemical equivalence law led to a deterioration in his relations with Stark. ?Several years later Albert Einstein gave a treatment of the photochemical laws on the basis of quantum theory [the two offered papers]. Johannes Stark, in a subsequent note, then drew attention to his earlier treatment, to which Einstein replied by stating: ?J. Stark has written a note concerning a paper of mine [Attributes: First Edition]

Modes et Manières d'aujourd'hui : 5 plaques de zinc, pour 9 des 12 compositions de Georges Lepape (1912)

Corrard Pierre 1912 - EXCEPTIONNEL & SANS ÉQUIVALENT ! EXCEPTIONAL AND UNPRECEDENTED ! MOVING PICTURE GLUE BOOK

      - POP-UP. MOVING PICTURE GLUE BOOK with pictures that move and verses by B. Baker. NY: Stokes (1912). Obl. 4to, cloth backed pictorial boards, VG+ in a chipped dw. Printed on heavy paper, there are 12 full page color illustrations used as backgrounds, each of which is faced by a page of verse. There were 4 perforated pages each with 3 color cut-outs - one for each background page (6 already done). The child is instructed to cut out each section, fold and then glue it to the full page illustration and then fold the background page so that when the page is opened, the child has made his own pop-up book! Illustrated in bright colors in typical turn of the century style. Includes a man catching a baseball, a boy scout catching a butterfly, a mule kicking a stertypical Black man and more. About the illustrator and the importance of this work, the following is an excerpt from The World Encyclopedia of Cartooning: "Baker, Alfred Zantzinger (1870-1933) [was] an American cartoonist born in Baltimore, Maryland_ . Baker pursued seriously art and was exhibited at age 23 in the National Academy_he joined the staff of Puck in 1898. As a cartoonist he did not confine his work to one outlet, and at the turn of the century Baker was appearing frequently in the pages of Puck, Judge, Life, Scribner's, Harper's, Century and St. Nicholas. His books include The Moving Picture Book (1911), The Moving Picture Glue Book (1912) and The Torn Book (1913). His innovations, such as die-cutting and 3-D drawings with glasses, are surpassed in the children's book genre only by those of the imaginative Peter Newell. Baker's work was among the freshest and cleverest of American cartooning at the turn of the century, and retains these characteristic even under modern scrutiny." Rare. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Agricola De Re Metallica; Translated from the First Latin Edition 1556

The Mining Magazine, London 1912 - Association copy SIGNED and INSCRIBED on free front end paper by the future President and his wife, "To Chester Benson / With Kind Regards of / Herbert Hoover / Lou Henry Hoover". Interesting association copy between two Oregonians and at the time, two titans of commerce. Stamped number 01930 out of 3000. 8.25" x 13.5" [6] xxxi 1-640 with scores of woodcuts, tables and instructions about the methodology of mineralogy throughout the ancient practices in the ancient world. Still bound in the original vellum, the bottom couple inches of the spine appears to have once been nibbled by mice in the basement of the Benson Hotel, expertly reconstructed.Chester Benson was the third son of Simon Benson, timber and land magnate whom Gov. Withycomb designated as "Oregon's First Citizen". The Hoovers frequently stayed at the Benson Hotel when visiting his home state of Oregon. "There are three objectives in translation of works of this character: to give faithful, literal translation of the author's statement; to give these in a manner which will interest the reader: and to preserve, so far as is possible, the style of the original text. The task has been double difficult in this work because, in using Latin, the author availed himself of a medium which had ceased to expand a thousand years before his subject had in many particulars come into being; in consequence he was in difficulties with a large number of ideas for which there were no corresponding words in the vocabulary at his command.he coined several hundred Latin expressions to answer his needs."
