        The Peter Pan Portfolio,

London: Hodder & Stoughton,, [1912]. from "Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens", by J. M. Barrie. Elephant folio. Original full vellum portfolio, titles to front cover gilt, with the original ivory silk ties laced to a large bow at the spine and with two pairs of original ivory silk ties to the fore edges. In the original green cloth-sided card box with full-page printed paper label to front. Housed in a custom green quarter morocco solander box. 12 large proof-size colour plates mounted in mats, with captioned tissue guards, by Rackham. The box a little worn in places, but a fine copy, a remarkable survival of this luxurious presentation. Deluxe extra-limited edition, number 13 of 100 copies signed by the publisher and engraver on the limitation page and each plate signed on the mount by the artist, bound in full vellum. According to Latimore & Haskell, although Rackham was supposed to sign all 100 copies, the artist admitted that he had signed only about 20 of them. Copies numbered 101 to 600 were issued in a half vellum portfolio with green cloth sides; none of these was signed by Rackham. The Peter Pan Portfolio reproduces 12 of Rackham's favourite illustrations at their original size. Barrie wrote enthusiastically of Rackham's originals, which he had seen exhibited at the Leicester Galleries, "I like best of all the Serpentine with the fairies, and the Peter in his night-gown sitting in the tree. Next I would [sic] the flying Peters, the fairies going to the ball (as in the 'tiff' and the fairy on cobweb) ? the fairies sewing the leaves with their sense of fun (the gayest thing this) and your treatment of snow" (Ray 329). Barrie's comments seemingly influenced Rackham's selection, as the portfolio includes all the images the author mentioned.

Then, too, he was really more attached to truth than the poets are; for the latter do violence to their own stories in order to make them probable; but he by announcing a story which everyone knows not to be true, told the truth by the very fact that he did not claim to be relating real events" (Philostratus, Life of Apollonius of Tyana, Book V:14).Lattimore and Haskell, pp. 38-9.         Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens

London: Hodder & Stoughton Limited, , [1912]. From The Little White Bird. A New Edition. Quarto. Original green cloth, titles and pictorial decoration to spine and front cover gilt, plain endpapers. With the dust jacket, priced 25/- net on the front flap. Colour frontispiece and 49 colour plates mounted on plain paper, with captioned tissue guards, black and white illustrations in the text, all by Rackham. Spine gently rolled, a touch of rubbing to corners, occasional spotting internally, in the jacket with lightly sunned spine, shallow chipping to corners, short closed tears to edges, and a few surface scratches to front panel; still a fine copy. Trade edition, first impression. Riall notes there are two different green cloths used for the binding of the trade edition, either smooth or textured. The cloth on this copy is an emerald-green linen-grain cloth, presumably Riall's "textured" variant. The green dust jacket, which repeats the lettering and pictorial designs of the case, has preserved the cloth in notably bright condition. This edition is an improved revision of the 1906 edition, with a larger page size, an entirely new setting of type, a new coloured frontispiece, and seven full-page black and white drawings not in the earlier edition. The plates are distributed throughout, not gathered at the end as in the 1906 edition. The edition is undated, except for the new frontispiece, which is dated 1912 within the image.

USA HISTORY BY FIRST RUSSIAN LIBRARIAN IN AMERICA] Istoriya Severo-Amerikanskikh soedinyonnykh shtatov. V 2 t. [i.e. The History of Northern-American United States. In 2 vols]

tip. Trenke i Fyusno, St. Petersburg 1912 - V.1: 1607-1826. [8], 493 pp. V.2: 1829-1910. [4], 471 pp., 1 map. 20,5x13,3 cm. In two modern half-leather bindings. Original front wrappers preserved. Cut, light foxing of the covers. Otherwise a fine crispy copy. Rare. First edition. First thorough history written by Russian. Alexey Vasilyevich Babin (1866-1930), Russian historian, library scientists, bibliographer became one of the first librarians who developed American-Russian cultural and library relationship in the end of 19th century. He is one of the pioneers of American studies in Russia. Babin went to the USA in 1889 where he was accepted to Cornell University. He graduated with a degree in history. To pay for his education he worked in university library and became a professional librarian during these years. In 1902 he was invited to work in the Library of Congress as curator of Slavic literature. He was the first Russian specialist to work there. One of the most important periods of his time in Library was when he participated in buying a famous book collection of Siberian merchant G.V. Yudin in 1906. Babin was the key intermediary in this process and among other things made a catalog of the collection in Russian and English which included more than 100 000 volumes. Yudin's collection became keystone of Slavic department of the Library of Congress while Babin became the head of this department. Before his death in 1930 he signed his will in which he left everything to the Library for further development of Slavic department. He was one of the first Russian immigrants to gain scientific recognition. While he was in USA he corresponded with his Russian colleagues. During his visits he shared the information on conditions of American book and library business. He went back to Russia for some time working in different areas including even teaching English. He also wrote this book on history of the United States. Even though Yudin didn't get the full previously agreed payment and books were not kept in one place as he requested, they remained friends and Yudin acted as his publisher in 1912. Among chapters of this edition are The Discovery of America, Virginia, New England in 1765, Constitution, Washington's Ruling 1789-1797, Unites States in 1910 etc. The edition is supplied with bibliography, index, chart on president's election (with number of votes), chart on US territories (size and population), chart on each state (the time of entry, size and population). The map depicts the growth of the USA since 1776 to 1867. WorldCat locates four copies. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

MANUSCRIT AUTOGRAPHE DE GEORGES NORMANDY INTITULE : LA GLOIRE DE JEAN LORRAIN. 13 feuillets 29 x 21 cm. Nombreuses corrections, ajouts par collages. Encre violette majoritairement (quelques passages à l'encre noire). ENSEMBLE UNIQUE.

Exceedingly Rare Archibald Gracie letter with "Titanic" Content! He Was one of the first survivors to die after the tragedy late in 1912 before his book "The Truth About the Titanic" was published

Washington, DC, September 26, 1912. 7.75" x 10.5". "Typed Letter Signed ""Archd Gracie"" in ink, 1p, 7.75"" x 10.5,"" on lightweight paper, his retained carbon marked ""Copy."" [Washington, D.C.,]. September 26, 1912. To Louis M. Ogden, Tuxedo, N.Y. Minor folds. Fine condition. In full, ""I have returned to my residence in Washington, after convalescing during the summer at Long Beach, Long Island. I have been neglectful in not having written to you, but I hope under the circumstances, you will not take it amiss.""I am now trying to write a book and to straighten out much neglected affairs. In connection with the book, remember I want your assistance in the matter of illustrations. What have you done with the films of the pictures you took? I would like to have them that I might put them into the hands of some expert to be enlarged for the purpose, if possible, of identifying some of the passengers in each boat. Prints which I have cannot be developed for this purpose.""I have done considerable research work and may be able to identify, better perhaps than others, the pictures which you took. What I have found out I think will interest you. Perhaps you also have obtained information which may add to my store. In my book, you will find that I have done justice to what your dear wife and yourself did for us unfortunates on the CARPATHIA, especially what you did for me. I am writing this more to get in touch with you as soon as possible, as I want to publish my book at an early date. My manuscript is nearly completed, and I want to hand it to my publisher within a month. If you or your wife could write me your recollections of that awful morning, April 15th, and what you saw as the TITANIC's lifeboats came in sight and their contents unloaded aboard the CARPATHIA, I might be able to use the same. My book will differ from others that have been written, presenting almost entirely the human side, and giving my personal experience. The title of it will be, 'The Truth About the TITANIC.'""Mrs. Gracie joins me in best wishes to you both and we hope to see you sometime during the coming winter. She as very appreciative of your kindness to me.""P.S. I promised Third Officer H.J. Pitman, formerly of the TITANIC, now om board the OCEANIC, White Star Line, that I would call your attention to the fact that he had not received the promised prints from you of the TITANIC'S life boats. You can address him either in New York or at Southampton, c/o White Star Line.""Col. Archibald Gracie (1858-1912) died in New York on December 4, 1912. He had served as colonel in the 7th New York Militia. In part, from his obituary in The New York Times, ""In the wreck of the Titanic Col. Gracie was still clinging to the rail of the topmost deck after the wave had passed that swept her just before her final plunge. 'When the ship plunged down,' he said in one of his first accounts of the tragedy, 'I was forced to let go, and I was swirled around and around for what seemed an interminable time. Eventually I came to the surface to find the sea a mass of tangled wreckage. Luckily, I was unhurt, and, casting about, managed to seize a wooden grating floating near by. When I had recovered my breath I discovered a large canvas and cork life-raft which had floated up … When dawn broke there were thirty of us on the raft, standing knee deep in the icy water and afraid to move lest the cranky craft be overturned. Several unfortunates, benumbed and half dead, besought us to save them and one or two made an effort to reach us, but we had to warn them away. The hours that elapsed before we were picked up by the Carpathia were the longest and most terrible that I ever spent. We were afraid to turn around and look to see whether we were seen by passing craft, and when some one who was facing the stern passed the word that something that looked like a steamer was coming up, one of the men became hysterical under the strain. The rest of us, too, were near the breaking point.'""At the time of his death, Col. Gracie had not finished his book. He had planned a final chapter to deal with the causes and the lessons taught. Col. Gracie mentions Ogden in his book, The Truth About the Titanic (New York: Mitchell Kennerley, 1913): ""I am particularly grateful to a number of kind people on the Carpathia who helped replenish my wardrobe, but especially to Mr. Louis M. Ogden, a family connection and old friend. To Mrs. Ogden … I am also most grateful. "" He also reproduced four photographs taken by Ogden from the Carpathia. The only other letter written by Col. Archibald Grace about the Titanic ever to appear at a major public auction was sold at Christie's London in 1998 for $2,295. Written to a Charles Vale in November 1912, Gracie discusses the progress of his book ,The Truth About the TITANIC. "
