Agricola De Re Metallica; Translated from the First Latin Edition 1556

The Mining Magazine, London 1912 - Association copy SIGNED and INSCRIBED on free front end paper by the future President and his wife, "To Chester Benson / With Kind Regards of / Herbert Hoover / Lou Henry Hoover". Interesting association copy between two Oregonians and at the time, two titans of commerce. Stamped number 01930 out of 3000. 8.25" x 13.5" [6] xxxi 1-640 with scores of woodcuts, tables and instructions about the methodology of mineralogy throughout the ancient practices in the ancient world. Still bound in the original vellum, the bottom couple inches of the spine appears to have once been nibbled by mice in the basement of the Benson Hotel, expertly reconstructed.Chester Benson was the third son of Simon Benson, timber and land magnate whom Gov. Withycomb designated as "Oregon's First Citizen". The Hoovers frequently stayed at the Benson Hotel when visiting his home state of Oregon. "There are three objectives in translation of works of this character: to give faithful, literal translation of the author's statement; to give these in a manner which will interest the reader: and to preserve, so far as is possible, the style of the original text. The task has been double difficult in this work because, in using Latin, the author availed himself of a medium which had ceased to expand a thousand years before his subject had in many particulars come into being; in consequence he was in difficulties with a large number of ideas for which there were no corresponding words in the vocabulary at his command.he coined several hundred Latin expressions to answer his needs."         Eigenh. Brief mit U. London, 1. XI. 1912.

1912. 1½ SS. Gr.-8vo.

        A Cowboy Detective

W.B. Conkey Company, Chicago - 1912. First edition. Illustrated from 20 photographs including a frontispiece portrait of the author. Thick octavo red pictorial cloth stamped in gilt. Edges and spine tips rubbed: spine lightly sunned, front inner hinge cracked, else a very good, sound copy. The copy INSCRIBED BY SIRINGO to his friend Jim Mitchell. The inscription reads "To my friend / Jim Mitchell / with compliments of the author / Chas. A. Siringo / Hollywood, Calif. / May 3rd, 1926". Mitchell was the son of Thomas D Everhart, a mining engineer who was a constable with Wyatt Earp in Yuma Arizona. Mitchell wrote stories about Wyatt Earp which appeared in the Los Angeles Examiner in the 1920's, and when Earp died, Mitchell wrote his obituary and a short story that told about Earp's exploits. Wyatt and Josephine Earp lived on 17th street in Hollywood, California, four houses away from the Mitchell residence. Jim Mitchell was at Wyatt's bedside when he died and served as a pallbearer at his funeral. Born in 1855, Siringo worked from age 15 as a cowboy. In 1877, he was in Dodge City , Kansas, where he made the acquaintance of Wyatt Earp. After taking part in several cattle drives, he settled down, got married and opened a merchant business. He wrote a book entitled A Texas Cowboy which was published to wide acclaim. In 1886 he began a more than 20-year career as a detective with the famed Pinkerton agency. During this time he frequently worked undercover. In 1892 he stood against a lynch mob to protect Clarence Darrow, and in the 1890's he posed as an alleged gunman to infiltrate Butch Cassidy's gang. Information he provided led to the arrest of several members of the gang. He retired from Pinkerton's in 1907, and began writing another book which he entitled Pinkerton's Cowboy Detective. The Pinkerton Agency held up publication of the book for two years, claiming that it violated a confidentiality agreement, and objecting to the use of their name in the title. Siringo eventually capitulated, and published his book as A Cowboy Detective. One of the characteristic points for the book, as is present in this copy, is Siringo's underlining of the name "Dickenson" in the phrase "My First Work for the Dickerson Agency" and writing "Pinkerton" in the margin. From 1916 to 1918, Siringo worked as a Texas Ranger, but his health began to fail, and he retired, moving to Los Angeles. There, he became a celebrity because of his well-known exploits, and he rekindled his relationship with Wyatt Earp. In 1927, he published another book, Riata and Spurs. He died in 1928. A famous work with a fascinating inscription tying together a group of prominent names from the wild west, Everhart, Earp and Siringo. Provenance: The Mitchell Family.
