Livingston, H.
1911. - An original pen & ink drawing consisting of 6 panels drawn in ink on 8-1/4 inch high by 29 inch wide art board. The strip portrays Mutt and Jeff's adventures in Mexico. In this drawing Jeff is depicted leading his men as he storms a fortress during the Mexican Revolution while cannonballs fly by them. After shooting up soldiers from the Mexican army, Jeff hurls bricks at President Diaz, plays solitaire in the midst of a hail of bullets and, attired as a general, sits while Mutt shines & polishes his shoes. The last panel portrays both characters in bed, Mutt waking Jeff up from his dreams. Signed "H. Livingston" in ink and dated "1911" at the bottom of the last panel. Once framed, the very edges of the borders and the verso of the drawings are darkened & stained. The drawing is in otherwise nice bright condition. Created by Bud Fisher in 1907, "Mutt and Jeff" was the first true American comic strip as opposed to single panels published in newspapers prior to its inception. The strip, which remained in syndication until 1983, employed numerous cartoonists throughout its run. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Livingston, H.
1911. - An original pen & ink drawing consisting of 6 panels drawn in ink on 8-1/4 inch high by 29 inch wide art board. The strip portrays an event during Mutt and Jeff's adventures in Mexico. Mutt, the taller of the two, encounters a young attractive Mexican woman who is crying over her fear that her "sweetheart" may have been killed while fighting in the army. Reassuring her, Mutt hollers out only to have the shorter Jeff show up to be embraced by the young woman who recognizes him as her sweetheart. In the last panel, Mutt suggests that "Lady Readers" fold up the paper so that he can express his feelings, no doubt in rather colorful language. Signed "H. Livingston" and dated "1911" at the bottom of the last panel. Once framed, the very edges of the borders and the verso of the drawings are darkened & stained. A framer's notes are penciled on the verso.

WEBB, H.T
H.T. Webb, 32 S. Clark St, 1911. Near Fine. Unbound. Mammoth plate silver gelatin portrait photograph. Image size approximately 19" x 14.5" on a 22" x 19" thick card mount. Hand captioned beneath the image: "Grace Presbyterian Base Ball Team Champions Presbyterian Brotherhood League Season 1911." Toning and small nicks on the edges of the mount only, lettering is rubbed but easily readable, the image is fine. Spectacular portrait of 15 African-American men, all but three in uniform, with trophy, mitts, and a catcher's mask. One of the three men in street clothing is on crutches. All members of an African-American amateur baseball team from Chicago (references to the photographer Webb appear in various Chicago sources; he also seems to have photographed some of the Chicago White Sox players). Grace Presbyterian was established in 1888 as a storefront African-American church that existed until around 1917. The Presbyterian Brotherhood was a men's club meant to promote "masculine Christianity." We have been unable to determine whether the Presbyterian Brotherhood League was segregated or not. Chicago had a vibrant African-American culture after the First Great Migration. While we have been unable to identify individual players, the professional black baseball teams of Rube Foster were thriving in this period, and further investigation is probably warranted. An unusually large and aesthetically satisfying image. Portraits of African-American baseball teams from this era, especially mammoth plate images, are rare.

London, Sidgwick & Jackson, 1911. First Edition. First Impression. Hardback. A near fine copy in a well preserved jacket. Locke reports two variants without priority, this being variant B in dark green cloth with gilt to the spine [Spectrum I, p32]. The Hampdenshire Wonder was a huge influence on Stapledon's writing of Odd John [Crossley, p225] and a 'groundbreaking account of a superhuman child' [Luckhurst, p47; Barron, II-113; Blieler, p21 as Supermen]. An important work of science fiction. The jacket is complete with a 35mm closed tear to the rear at the spine. Spine and a few other areas toned. The book itself has a little spotting to the edges, and offsetting to the endpapers but is a sharp copy overall. An excellent book and a highlight of 20th century speculative fiction. Uncommon. SCHUSSENRIED (Werner von) ].
1911. Ensemble 4 ouvrages en 1 volume in-12. 1). 1f. 55ff. 2). 42ff. non chiffrés. 3). 32ff. non chiffrés. 4). 135pp.
