Mary Adela Blagg - Four Fairy Tales - 1911 U.K. first edition published by J. Lowndes, Cheadle First edition. Inscribed by Blagg to the front endpaper: "Felicite Hardcastle With good wishes for her birthday, July 1; from the authoress. 1911". The book is reasonably firmly bound in the publisher's blue cloth, which is lettered and decorated in gilt, the extremities are slightly bumped and rubbed and there are some minor marks. The text block is slightly toned, dusty and foxed. The manuscript of 'The Ugly Prince' consists of 64 slightly toned and foxed pages simply bound in card boards covered with slightly rubbed black cloth, with a title label consisting of a strip of paper gummed to the front, it is inscribed: "For miss A. N. Bowers From the author January 1906". Mary Blagg is best known as an astronomer and is noted for the significant contribution she made to lunar measurement, mapping and nomenclature, becoming one of the first women to be elected as a fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. Upon Blagg's death a rather charming lunar crater was named after her. Blagg is less well known as an author of fairy tales but having read 'The Ugly Prince' this is clearly an oversight, as it is excellently written and in the best traditions of the genre. Mary Blagg's sister was called Alice and married a William Eli Bowers so presumably the manuscript is inscribed to one of her daughters, or to a relative of William Bowers. Felicite Frances Hardcastle was the daughter of Joseph Alfred Hardcastle and the great grand-daughter of celebrated astronomer Sir William Herschel. [Attrib … [Click Below for Full Description]

Giambattista Basile
London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1911. Condition: ___ Internally the book is in fine condition, externally very good. One of 150 copies, the Editino de Luxe, quarto size, 304 pp. The text of this book is based on John Edward Taylor's translation from 1847. Giambattista Basile (1566-1632) was an Italian poet, courtier, and fairy tale collector. The earliest form of this work was published in 1634 and 1636 under a pseudonym, by his sister, in two volumes. It languished and then received attention when praised by the Brothers Grimm as the first "national" collection of fairy tales, and contains the earliest known versions of Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, and Rapunzel. His collection of stories became known as the Pentamerone because it was loosely modeled after the Decamerone of Boccaccio. Warwick Goble (1862-1943) was an illustrator specializing in Japanese and Indian themes; his interest in Japanese style is evident in his work, and had an affect on later illustrators including Virginia Frances Sterrett. Among many other works, in his early career he was the first to illustrate H.G. Wells's The War of the Worlds. The editor, Edward Fairbrother Strange, worked at the Victoria and Albert Museum and was the author of numerous works on art and illustration, as well as contributing articles to the famous 11th edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica. DESCRIPTION: Deluxe binding of white vellum with gilt decoration on front, gilt lettering on front and spine, top edge gilt, fore- and bottom edges uncut, yellow ties, plain endpapers, title page in red and black. (Hammersmith: Doves Press, 1911). Small quarto. (232)pp. One of 200 copies, printed in red and black. This is the first of two Wordsworth titles published by T. J. Cobden-Sanderson, who "planned his anthologies very carefully" (Tidcombe, 70). In original full limp vellum by the Doves Bindery. Some natural discoloration to vellum, light crease to spine. Overall, a fine copy. (Tidcombe DP25).

Simcoe, Elizabeth Posthuma Gwillim; John Ross Robertson (editor)
William Briggs, Toronto, 1911. [472pp coated stock, with frontis guard]: [ii], xxx, 440; gilt-decorated ribbed evergreen cloth, jacket (unpriced & unclipped); 240 x 164 x 36 mm. First edition of this pioneering treasure, transcribed at Wolford Lodge, Devon, under the direction of John Ross Robertson (who also engaged artists to illustrate every edifice connected with the Simcoes, as well as Lady Simcoe's drawings & maps); a momentous & monumental extra-illustrated & annotated extravaganza. With the editor's Preface dated August 1911 & extensive biographical essay. The Canadian portion of the Diary extends from 11 November 1791 through 16 October 1796, with the Simcoes' arrival in Upper Canada, delayed by the season until late June 1792. A notoriously heavy tome, the present copy is exceptional in preserving hinges & joints. The very rare jacket is only worn at spine ends & tips, though there is a 6cm separation along the upper joint mid-spine. A historic undertaking in surpassing condition. Cobden-Sanderson, who "planned his anthologies very carefully" (Tidcombe, 70). First edition bound without adverts. with second edition of Whymper s Chamonix and the Range of Mont Blanc (1897), contemporary half calf, rubbed; remaining editions either rebound with orig. wrappers retained (2nd, 3rd, 8th, 11th - but lacks general map of Zermatt), rebound without wrappers (7th ), or in the original wrappers (4th, 5th - but lacks general map of Zermatt - 6th, 9th, 10th, 12th, 13th, 14th - with new spine - 15th); some wear to spines of most copies in wrappers, overall good. Blagg, Mary Adela
Cheadle J. Lowndes 1911. First edition. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Jessie M. King
1911. Jessie M[arion] King [1875-1949] four autograph letters to a 'Mr. Murray' dated between January and March 1911 when King and her husband E. A. Taylor were living in Paris on the Left Bank in Rue de la Grande-Chaumiere and the letters are addressed from there. The first dated Jan 9th 1911 acknowledges the invitation to exhibit bookplates at an exhibition in Glasgow and gives the names and addresses of three people for whom she has designed bookplates. The second letter dated February 2nd explains that she has been laid up with influenza and goes on to write that '[I] of course would not dream of asking the loan of originals unless they could stand in their own frames and . I don't think a mixture of different artists' work in the same frame would make for an artistic whole. I think I would prefer not to exhibit any prints unless I were permitted to arrange and frame my prints for exhibition. I may say that I have designed quite a number although you have only secured one but a large number of mine have been done for foreigners as well as Britishers. The third letter is dated March 8th. She writes that I shall be very pleased to let you have a frame with prints of my best plates all belonging to Scotch people.I shall illuminate the plates which have not been reproduced in colour. This is the only letter which she signs 'Jessie M. King Taylor'. The others she signs as 'Jessie M. King' The last letter is dated March 22nd and she asks for the address to send him a series of bookplates which she is gathering from a number of people she has designed for listing nine people, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ruben Dario
1911. One page on letterhead paper "Mundial Magazine" typed and signed by Dario in Paris. In 1910, he traveled to Mexico as a member of a Nicaraguan delegation to commemorate the centenary of the country's independence. However, the Nicaraguan government changed while it was traveling, and the Mexican dictator Porfirio Díaz refused to receive the writer. However, Darío was received in a triumphant manner by the Mexican people, who manifested in favor of the poet and against his government. In his autobiography, Darío relates these protests to the Mexican Revolution, then about to take place. Before the snub of the Mexican government, Darío sailed to Havana, where, under the influence of alcohol, he tried to commit suicide. In November 1910 he returned to Paris, where he continued to be a correspondent for the newspaper La Nación and did a job for the Mexican Ministry of Public Instruction that perhaps had been offered as compensation for the humiliation suffered, this letter is from that period before traveling to South America. Provenance : Bought from the family of Velloso and this letter is reproduced in the book JUAN JOSE DE URQUIZA - La amistad de Rubén Darío y Enrique García Velloso (The friendship of Rubén Darío and Enrique García Velloso)
