Wharton, Edith
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1911. First edition, first issue with "wearily" in perfect type on penultimate line of page 135 and with four pages of publisher's advertisements at rear, of Wharton's greatest tragic story, a "grim tale of a bud of romance ice-bound and turned into a frozen horror in the frigid setting of a New England winter landscape" (The New York Times). Octavo, original cloth, gilt titles to the spine and front panel, gilt topstain. In near fine condition contemporary name to the front free endpaper. A very nice example. There are only three or four American novelists who can be thought of as major," noted Gore Vidal, "and Edith Wharton is one." Her Ethan Frome "shows a marked departure from the ironic contemplation of aristocratic mores... the central problem is that of the barriers imposed by local conventions upon an individual whose happiness depends on rising above them" (Hart 813).

Oxford: Elkin Mathews, 1911. Condition: Very Good. See ITEM DESCRIPTION below for full condition details. Up for auction is a copy of the first edition of the Romantic document The Diary of John William Polidori, the original publication from 1911. Polidori travelled with Byron as his personal physician in 1816, and the Diary is a contemporary source of information on the circle of Byron, Shelley, and Mary Shelley of the first importance. Details as follows: POLIDORI (DR. JOHN WILLIAM) (1795-1821). The Diary of Dr. John William Polidori 1816 Relating to Byron, Shelley, etc. Edited and Elucidated by William Michael Rossetti. New endpapers. Early in 1816 Polidori obtained the post of physician to Lord Byron, then departing on a tour of the continent following the breakdown of his marriage. Polidori seems to have been offered £500 by Byron's publisher John Murray for a journal of the tour; in the event his Diary, an important resource for scholars, was not published until 1911, edited by his nephew, William Michael Rossetti. On arrival in Ostend on 26 April 1816, Byron's entourage proceeded through Flanders to the Rhine, taking in the battlefield of Waterloo memorialized in the third canto of Childe Harold's Pilgrimage. Polidori's oversensitivity to ridicule and Byron's growing contempt for his prickly and bumptious young physician led to a rapid decline in their relationship which woul … [Click Below for Full Description]

Author.
Condition: Acceptable. The book is dated 1911 as seen in the photos. The implied signiture date is November 1912. The recipents name is ANDREW CARNEGIE. I know that ANDREW CARNEGIE died in August of 1919. So there is a possibly that this book was purchased and owned by ANDREW CARNEGIE. On the internet I am unable to make the connection to the place and date to when this book was signed by the Auther to ANDREW CARNEGIE. I know ANDREW CARNEGIE spent the summers in Scotland and wintered in the USA. So the November date would put him back in the USA. He passed away in 1919 at his home in LENOX, MASSACHUSETTS. I am lowering the price but if any connections are made the price will go back up. 1911 Book Titled: The Pilgrims And Their Monument by Edmund J. Carpenter. Signed by Author to ANDREW CARNEGIE. The Pilgrim Monument in Provincetown, Massachusetts, was built between 1907 and 1910 to commemorate the first landfall of the Pilgrims in 1620 and the signing in Provincetown Harbor of the Mayflower Compact. This 252-foot-tall (76.8 m) campanile is the tallest all-granite structure in the United States, and is part of the Provincetown Historic District. In 1620, the Pilgrims spent five weeks exploring Cape Cod before they sailed to Plymouth, Massachusetts. After spending weeks at sea, the Pilgrims resolved not to set foot on land until the Mayflower Compact was written and signed. The Mayflower Compact is the first instance of a democratic society in the New World. A contest was held to design a structure to commemorate the Pilgrims' landing; the winning design, by Willard T. Dornbusch II 425. First edition, interior tight, some pages moved and tipped correctly as this title was bound incorrectly, battle notes and corrections by James E. Rodd, to whom Baker presented this copy. Rodd's wounding in battle is described in this volume. This paper is followed by a second 18 page paper. Wraps toned, uncommon, a fine annotated copy! This memoir was prepared for presentation at the 50th anniversary of the departure of the unit from New Orleans for the seat of war in Virginia. It opens describing the Washington Artillery's 50th Anniversary Banquet and Parade held at the Grunewald Hotel, New Orleans, Louisiana on December 13, 1911 and concludes with a roster of those present. This paper contains the reminiscences of former Col. Henry Baker of the Washington Artillery of Louisiana from the time of his mustering in at New Orleans with a grand parade, through the trial and tribulations of war to the Battle of Fredericksburg. He confines himself mainly to his personal observations and experiences while campaigning with the A.N.V. Not Ex-Lib. 1911. A group of 13 vernacular photographs printed on postcards taken in 1911 by an American who was involved in supporting the Xinhai Revolution of 1911. The postcards are all annotated on the verso, and give a picture of US involvement, in San Francisco, Yokohama and Canton. Two postcards illustrate the ties with Japan. One is a photo of a group of six Japanese in Western clothing, including a young woman, in a large open touring car, with the annotation "This picture was taken in front of the Clift (sic) House Aug. 20, 1911. " Cliff house was a prominent hotel in San Francisco. At this time, the U.S. Navy was entertaining the Japanese training squadron in San Francisco. Another card shows two American men in rickshaws "Jinrikshas in Yokohama, Japan". We presume that these men were the American naval attachés or diplomats. The other 11 images are taken in Canton, and two are related to the "72 Martyrs" that were beheaded. The annotations on the verso read: "Martyrs" who were beheaded by orders of Imperial Government for part they took in destroying the Viceroy's office 4/27/11. Soldiers are lined up on opposite side of pond, just below people standing on embankment.; 11/19/11 Soldiers (Rebels) & sympathizers holding religious services at the graves of 72 "martyrs" buried in Canton cemetery. China; Photographs]
These were beheaded by orders of Imperial Govt. for party they took in destroying the Viceroy's office - 4/27/11. The rest are views of Canton- Canton River, sampans & S. S. Mary Adela Blagg - Four Fairy Tales - 1911 U.K. first edition published by J. Lowndes, Cheadle First edition. Inscribed by Blagg to the front endpaper: "Felicite Hardcastle With good wishes for her birthday, July 1; from the authoress. 1911". The book is reasonably firmly bound in the publisher's blue cloth, which is lettered and decorated in gilt, the extremities are slightly bumped and rubbed and there are some minor marks. The text block is slightly toned, dusty and foxed. The manuscript of 'The Ugly Prince' consists of 64 slightly toned and foxed pages simply bound in card boards covered with slightly rubbed black cloth, with a title label consisting of a strip of paper gummed to the front, it is inscribed: "For miss A. N. Bowers From the author January 1906". Mary Blagg is best known as an astronomer and is noted for the significant contribution she made to lunar measurement, mapping and nomenclature, becoming one of the first women to be elected as a fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. Upon Blagg's death a rather charming lunar crater was named after her. Blagg is less well known as an author of fairy tales but having read 'The Ugly Prince' this is clearly an oversight, as it is excellently written and in the best traditions of the genre. Mary Blagg's sister was called Alice and married a William Eli Bowers so presumably the manuscript is inscribed to one of her daughters, or to a relative of William Bowers. Felicite Frances Hardcastle was the daughter of Joseph Alfred Hardcastle and the great grand-daughter of celebrated astronomer Sir William Herschel. [Attrib … [Click Below for Full Description]

Original purple cloth, spine lettered in gilt, front cover lettered in white and blocked in gilt with a portcullis design with a superimposed triangular device in the suffragettes' colours of purple, white, and green.
