Winston Churchill
Oddhams Press. The World Crisis 1911-1918 2 Volumes Both signed with good clear signatures in ink. Both 1st editions, 1939, published by Oddhams Press Hardback books with dark blue boards (without dust jackets- I'm not sure whether these originally came with dust jackets however). Complete and in good condition, tight and square. Some minor warping and soiling to boards as seen in the images. This and several other collectable books belonged to my late father and I am slowly going through them all and attempting to research them. Some of the proceeds will be donated to the local hospice and the CRUK charity. I am not quite sure as to value, so any advice would be gratefully received although I have seen signed books by Churchill sell/ offered for over £5000 each. All reasonable, but not ridiculous, offers will be replied to. I will send internationally but please note that international postage can be rather expensive as I will only send signed-for and tracked with insurance for loss and/ or damage. (WOMEN'S SUFFRAGE.)
London: printed by S. Burgess,, 1911. The most spectacular napkins … were the souvenir issues of Mrs S. Burgess of London Square of plain crepe paper (370 x 380 mm), the central printed illustration depicting 14 portraits of well-known suffragettes set within linked square boxes above a stylised title, "Votes for Women Souvenir & Official Programme", with two columns of explanatory text below, surrounded by a decorative border in green, red, blue, and yellow, comprising a leaf-and-vine frame, Union Jacks, English flags, and rosettes. Some perforations and creases, a little browned, else well-preserved given the material's fragility. Souvenir tissue napkin printed by Sarah Burgess for the Women's Coronation Procession of 17 June 1911, a demonstration held on the eve of George V's coronation, organized by the WSPU and attended by approximately 40,000 people, led by Charlotte Despard and Flora Drummond on horseback. Detailing the programme of the march, an explanation of its cause, and a description of the route (from Westminster to the Albert Hall), the napkin is an excellent ephemeral survival and an attractive example of the creative ways in which the suffrage movement advertised their cause. Souvenir napkins or "handkerchiefs" were commonly printed for large public ceremonies or occasions that occurred at the time. "The most spectacular napkins, however, were the souvenir issues of Mrs S. Burgess of London, who created items for various historical and period events" (Florey, p. 108). POTTER, Beatrix.
London: Frederick Warne & Co., 1911. 12mo. Original dark brown boards, titles to front cover and spine in white, front cover with onlaid paper panel with colored illustration of a squirrel in a red jacket, publisher's glassine dust jacket, printed in black to the flaps and the rear panel with "1/-" price printed to the base of the spine. A near fine copy, the dust jacket chipped to corners, loss to 1/5 of spine, tears to edges, small hole to front panel. Colored frontispiece and 26 full-page illustrations, uncoloured line vignette on title by Beatrix Potter. First edition, first impression, in the rare publisher's glassine dust jacket. The story of Timmy and Goody Tiptoes is the only Beatrix Potter story apparently set in North America - although this is implicit rather than stated anywhere in the book. All the main animal characters are indigenous to North America: grey squirrels, chipmunks and a "large bear", but the waters are muddied somewhat by the presence of Yellowhammers (or Emberiza citrinella, the birds which sing "Little bita bread and-no-cheese!") whose range includes Europe and much of Asia but not America. C. Fr. Glasenapp
[Click Below for Full Description]

Fitzroy Maclean Signed Note WWII Churchill Ian Fleming James Bond
1911. Please see book description below as well as pictures! Note Signed (very rare) by Sir Fitzroy Maclean on His Estate Stationary (Strachur House) Close Friend of Ian Fleming - presumably used Maclean for his inspiration of James Bond Free Shipping Dust Jacket Protected by a Brodart Cover Please see pictures for more information and detail Sir Fitzroy Hew Royle Maclean, 1st Baronet, KT, CBE (11 March 1911 - 15 June 1996) was a Scottish soldier, writer and politician. He was a Unionist Member of Parliament from 1941 to 1974 and was one of only two men who during the Second World War enlisted in the British Army as a private and rose to the rank of brigadier, the other being future fellow Conservative MP Enoch Powell. Maclean wrote several books, including Eastern Approaches, in which he recounted three extraordinary series of adventures: travelling, often incognito, in Soviet Central Asia; fighting in the Western Desert Campaign, where he specialised in commando raids behind enemy lines; and living rough with Tito and his Yugoslav Partisans. It has been widely speculated that Ian Fleming used Maclean as one of his inspirations for James Bond. When war broke out in 1939 Maclean was prevented from joining the military because of his position as a diplomat. He was 2nd Secretary in the Foreign Office. Therefore, he resigned from the Diplomatic Service "to go into politics". After tendering his resignation he immediately took a taxi to the nearest recruiting office and enlisted as a Private in the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders. He was soon promoted to lance corporal and was … [Click Below for Full Description]
