Jessie M. King
1911. Jessie M[arion] King [1875-1949] four autograph letters to a 'Mr. Murray' dated between January and March 1911 when King and her husband E. A. Taylor were living in Paris on the Left Bank in Rue de la Grande-Chaumiere and the letters are addressed from there. The first dated Jan 9th 1911 acknowledges the invitation to exhibit bookplates at an exhibition in Glasgow and gives the names and addresses of three people for whom she has designed bookplates. The second letter dated February 2nd explains that she has been laid up with influenza and goes on to write that '[I] of course would not dream of asking the loan of originals unless they could stand in their own frames and . I don't think a mixture of different artists' work in the same frame would make for an artistic whole. I think I would prefer not to exhibit any prints unless I were permitted to arrange and frame my prints for exhibition. I may say that I have designed quite a number although you have only secured one but a large number of mine have been done for foreigners as well as Britishers. The third letter is dated March 8th. She writes that I shall be very pleased to let you have a frame with prints of my best plates all belonging to Scotch people.I shall illuminate the plates which have not been reproduced in colour. This is the only letter which she signs 'Jessie M. King Taylor'. The others she signs as 'Jessie M. King' The last letter is dated March 22nd and she asks for the address to send him a series of bookplates which she is gathering from a number of people she has designed for listing nine people, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ruben Dario
1911. One page on letterhead paper "Mundial Magazine" typed and signed by Dario in Paris. In 1910, he traveled to Mexico as a member of a Nicaraguan delegation to commemorate the centenary of the country's independence. However, the Nicaraguan government changed while it was traveling, and the Mexican dictator Porfirio Díaz refused to receive the writer. However, Darío was received in a triumphant manner by the Mexican people, who manifested in favor of the poet and against his government. In his autobiography, Darío relates these protests to the Mexican Revolution, then about to take place. Before the snub of the Mexican government, Darío sailed to Havana, where, under the influence of alcohol, he tried to commit suicide. In November 1910 he returned to Paris, where he continued to be a correspondent for the newspaper La Nación and did a job for the Mexican Ministry of Public Instruction that perhaps had been offered as compensation for the humiliation suffered, this letter is from that period before traveling to South America. Provenance : Bought from the family of Velloso and this letter is reproduced in the book JUAN JOSE DE URQUIZA - La amistad de Rubén Darío y Enrique García Velloso (The friendship of Rubén Darío and Enrique García Velloso)

WHITMAN, Walt.
Moscow: Knigo-izdatel'stvo "Scorpion", 1911. Quarto. Original paper wrappers printed in green and brown, edges uncut. Printed price overstamped on rear cover, from 1 rouble 60 kopeks to 6 roubles 90 kopeks; old bookseller's notation in ink to inside rear cover. Book block slightly loosening from wrappers at head of spine, light creasing and nicking to spine and around extremities. A very nice copy. First edition of Konstantin Balmont's translation of Whitman's Leaves of Grass, the most complete pre-revolutionary edition of Whitman's work in Russian. Whitman's work was translated into Russian surprisingly late; Turgenev had undertaken some translations in the 1860s, which remained unpublished, and proposed a full translation in 1872 in a literary journal, while Tolstoy also recommended a translation in the 1880s, but nothing came of it other than a few translations of individual poems in periodicals. Balmont translated the work in the autumns of 1903 and 1905; some parts of the translation had appeared in the journals Vesy and Pereval, else the translation all here appears for the first time. The Balmont translation is often described as the first Russian translation, but it was in fact beaten to the post by the translation of Kornei Chukovsky, published in an especially rare edition of 1907. Balmont's translation is, however, more complete, and both these contending translations, in capturing the democratic and free spirit of Whitman's poems, resonate with the prevailing social spirit of Russia on its path to revolution. The book is very scarce, with OCLC listing ten copies … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bishop, Elizabeth. (1911 - 1979) The Complete Poems - SIGNED New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux. 1970. Second printing, paperback issue.. 8vo, original stiff wrappers; light to moderate wear and some dust soiling. Internally starting to brown. Inscribed, dated, and signed in ink in Elizabeth Bishop's hand on title page, "Richard Lautz - / greetings from Elizabeth Bishop / February 3rd, 1972." During her lifetime, poet Elizabeth Bishop was a respected yet somewhat obscure figure in the world of American literature. Since her death in 1979, however, her reputation has grown to the point that many critics, like Larry Rohter in the New York Times, have referred to her as "one of the most important American poets" of the 20th century. Bishop was a perfectionist who did not write prolifically, preferring instead to spend long periods of time polishing her work. She published only 101 poems during her lifetime. Her verse is marked by precise descriptions of the physical world and an air of poetic serenity, but her underlying themes include the struggle to find a sense of belonging, and the human experiences of grief and longing. BUDGE, E A Wallis
London/New York: Philip Lee Warner and G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1911. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. 2 Volumes. Tall octavos. Bound in later quarter ivory marbled calf over brown boards by Lopez Valencia. Spines with 5 raised bands and red leather labels with author and title. Lightly sprinkled edges. White and gray floral endpapers. xxix + 404, viii + 440 pp. Large color fold-out frontis to each volume. 4 photographic plates and 2 large black and white folding plates to volume one. Numerous black and white line drawings and figures throughout both volumes. From the personal library of noted Egyptologist Ricardo Caminos with his 2 small rubber stamps on dedication page of volume I. One folding plate in volume I is detached at one of the folds but remains complete. Another folding plate has some short tears along folds. Otherwise this is a fine set in a very nice binding. This is without a doubt, the most comprehensive, scholarly work on Osiris and the historical cults surrounding his ancient origins, his modes of worship, and his role as God of the afterlife, the underworld, and the dead. Included are translations of numerous texts and detailed accounts of the Heaven of Osiris, his cult of resurrection, his iconography, liturgies, shrines and ritual mysteries (both dark and light), his association with human sacrifice and funeral and burial practices, his role as judge of the dead, as well as detailed links connecting the mythology of Osiris worship and those of other African religions. A fascinating study.

Balilla Pratella
Milan: Direzione del Movimento Futurista, 1911. Single sheet folded once to make [4]pp. Soft horizontal fold to middle, else a nice example of this early Futurist music manifesto. The first musician to "surrender to the persuasion of promises and liberation", Pratella was courted early on by Marinetti to join his new movement that he hoped would breathe new life into Italian culture. Though not as nihilistic as Russolo's Art of Noises published three years later, he still makes what at the time, were revolutionary demands that musicians break from the traditional, proclaiming in a later manifesto that" the new order of disorder should be created by destroying the ancient schemes.".

DESCRIPTION: Bound in brown laid paper boards with an ivory cloth spine, publisher's paper label to the spine, and grey-green laid paper endpapers; the binding does not conform to that in the bibliographies, so is either a variant or the volume was rebound - if rebound, the binder did a wonderful job as there is plenty of room in the gutter margins. E. Sylvia Pankhurst - The Suffragette - 1911 first edition published by Gay and Hancock First U.K. edition. Published in June 1911, one month after the U.S. edition utilising the same sheets but with a new title page, stating "reprinted in June 1911" to the reverse, an errata page and completely different boards with the distinctive suffragette portcullis to the front. The book is firmly bound in the publisher's purple cloth, lettered and decorated in gilt, green and white, the corners and spine ends are slightly bumped and rubbed with slight toning to the spine. The text block is slightly foxed and toned. An unusually attractive example of the U.K. first edition of Pankhurst's history of the early days of the militant women's suffrage movement.
