Shelley, Percy Bysshe; Robinson, Charles (Illustrator); Gosse,
J. B. Lippincott Co, 1911. Robinson, Charles. First Trade Edition. Hardcover. First U.S. trade edition as illustrated by Robinson, quarto size, [128] pp., in original dust jacket. Near fine / very good. Percy Bysshe Shelley's (1792-1822) "The Sensitive Plant" is a delicate fairy fable about ephemeral beauty and the aspiration to follow dreams when the reality of the senses fails. It was first published in 1820 in "Prometheus Unbound" along with some of Shelley's best known work; here it is re-imagined with the hazy watercolour illustrations of prolific children's book illustrator Charles Robinson (1870-1937). Though paired with Shelley long after his death, they are well matched, "his black and white illustration reflects the influence of Beardsley and Walter Crane, and his watercolour illustrations have delicacy and sensitivity, greatly helped by the four colour process early in the century as the alternative to lithography. By incorporating lettering into the page design, and in his planning of the book as a whole, he developed the Arts and Crafts tradition of the book as a work of art" (Peppin, Brigid & Micklethwait, Lucy, "Book Illustrators of the Twentieth Century," p. 265). This edition of "The Sensitive Plant" certainly exemplifies that ideal of the artist's hand in all aspects of a book's design, with a beautifully composed typeface, decorative borders, pale pink page numbers, and stunning full-color mounted plates. With an introduction by Edmund William Gosse (1849-1928), a poet and author who was influential in the literary world of his day, encouraging the career … [Click Below for Full Description]

Basile, Giambattista; Strange, E[dward] F[airbrother], Editor;
Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1911. Goble, Warwick. Limited Edition. Vellum. One of 150 copies, the Editino de Luxe, quarto size, 304 pp. Near Fine. The text of this book is based on John Edward Taylor's translation from 1847. Giambattista Basile (1566-1632) was an Italian poet, courtier, and fairy tale collector. The earliest form of this work was published in 1634 and 1636 under a pseudonym, by his sister, in two volumes. It languished and then received attention when praised by the Brothers Grimm as the first "national" collection of fairy tales, and contains the earliest known versions of Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, and Rapunzel. His collection of stories became known as the Pentamerone because it was loosely modeled after the Decamerone of Boccaccio. Warwick Goble (1862-1943) was an illustrator specializing in Japanese and Indian themes; his interest in Japanese style is evident in his work, and had an affect on later illustrators including Virginia Frances Sterrett. Among many other works, in his early career he was the first to illustrate H.G. Wells's The War of the Worlds. The editor, Edward Fairbrother Strange, worked at the Victoria and Albert Museum and was the author of numerous works on art and illustration, as well as contributing articles to the famous 11th edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica. ___DESCRIPTION: Deluxe binding of white vellum with gilt decoration on front, gilt lettering on front and spine, top edge gilt, fore- and bottom edges uncut, yellow ties, plain endpapers, title page in red and black. On August 20, 1864, six hundred Confederate officers were moved onto a sidewheeler, Crescent City, bound for Charleston, be put under fire because Northern officers had been treated similarly in Charleston. After the ship ran aground, after two escape attempts failed, and after being exposed to fire at Charleston and later Morris Island, the prisoners were moved to Ft. Pulaski in Georgia where even the Union's official reports documented the horrible conditions and privations under which they lived. Expanded Edition printed by Stone and issued as a rebuttal against Northern charges of cruelty to prisoners and containing an added chapter with the diary of Capt Belford of the 3rd Missouri Cavalry. This details Union mistreatment of 600 Confederate Officers held at Morris Island, South Carolina. Added details on Hilton Head, Ft Delaware and Ft Pulaski - A really nice copy of this SCARCE work. School of Military Engineering, May, 1911., Chatham. Hong Kong and the New Territories Colour lithographed map, 40-section, canvas-backed, folding map, at a scale of one inch to one mile This map of Hong Kong and the New Territories is one of the earliest maps to show the topography of Lantau Island and adjacent islands in detail. Hills are shown with contours and hachure shading, with heights given in feet, and villages are named. Cheung Chau, called "Chung Island", is detailed, but Lamma appears to have been only partially surveyed. The "Mouth of the Canton (or Pearl) River" runs along the left margin. Mountains of interest include Lin tau (Lantau) Peak at 3064 feet, Victoria Peak at 1774 feet, Ma On Shan at 2261 feet, and Tai Mo Shan at 3130 feet. Part of the new, single-track Kowloon Canton Railway (which opened in 1910) is depicted between Tsim Sha Tsui and Sham Chun (Sum Chun). This map is an early example of the topographical maps of areas of British political and commercial interest compiled by the Geographical Section, General Staff of the War Office throughout the twentieth century.

Woodcut printed text and hand colored illustrations. The book contains multiple hand inscriptions that are only partially legible. Pencil inscription on front flyleaf contains references to Sarajevo, Bosnia and Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria, as well as years: 1911 and 1914. But, since we have not been able to translate the entire text, we cannot be certain of the context. In Romanian language, in old Cyrillic script. *** Place and date of publishing unknown. Based on the details and general condition of the book, as well as dates inscribed throughout the textblock, we can say that it was printed in the second half of the 18th century. *** Pp. /6/ + 344 (Cyrillic numeration); 4 hand colored illustrations, vignettes; initials. Julia Tuell
1911. Condition: Very Good. Very Good. Set of 13 silver gel photographs copyrighted by Tuell depicting scenes of the Cheyenne. Photos have titles and photographers imprint written on the photo in brown ink; a few of the photos have the title and copyright date, 1911, in the negative; almost all photos have manuscript notes on verso describing the scene, likely in Tuell's hand. The set includes 8 photos measuring 5 -1/2" x 3 -1/4" and 5 measuring 3 -1/4" x 3 -1/4. Overall very good. Some photos have light silvering and minor creasing. Julia Tuell (1886-1960) was a western photographer prized for her images of ceremonial and daily life of the Northern Cheyenne and the Rosebud Sioux tribes, her camera capturing scenes that were disappearing quickly in the West. Tuell lived on the Lame Deer Agency, Montana of the Northern Cheyenne from 1906 to 1912; Stroud, Oklahoma with the Sac and Fox Indians in 1913; and on the Sioux Indian Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota from 1913-1929 (Center of the West online). Some photo prints include: "The Badlands," "Little Mothers and Dolls - Cheyenne," "Medicine Prayer," and "A part of their food to the Sun God - Sun Dance" with notes on verso reading "This scene, the last day of the Sun dance, is where realatives[sic] and friends have brought in food to the participants after a period of 4 days and nights without food or water. A small portion of each article of food is then offered unto the Great Spirit or Sun God." Tuell's photographs are culturally and historically significant. Mautz p. 372.
