J.D. Beresford
Sidgwick & Jackson, London. London, Sidgwick & Jackson, 1911. First Edition. First Impression. Hardback. A near fine copy in a well preserved jacket. Locke reports two variants without priority, this being variant B in dark green cloth with gilt to the spine [Spectrum I, p32]. The Hampdenshire Wonder was a huge influence on Stapledon's writing of Odd John [Crossley, p225] and a 'groundbreaking account of a superhuman child' [Luckhurst, p47; Barron, II-113; Blieler, p21 as Supermen]. An important work of science fiction. The jacket is complete with a 35mm closed tear to the rear at the spine. Spine and a few other areas toned. The book itself has a little spotting to the edges, and offsetting to the endpapers but is a sharp copy overall. An excellent book and a highlight of 20th century speculative fiction. Uncommon. This is an attractively illustrated luxurious edition of the enduringly popular classic work on the art of angling, infused with wise fish lore and written by an indomitable sportsman who knew every haunt of freshwater fish in the south of England. "Angler" was first printed in 1653, and the text here is that of the fifth edition (1676). Walton (1593-1683) lived in turbulent times, and he suffered personal tragedy (he endured the deaths of both his wives and eight of his nine children), but, largely because of the present work, he is forever identified with quietude and serenity. 1911. Fine set like new. Complete Poetical Works of William Wordsworth (Boston, Houghton Mifflin 1911) Ten volumes complete. Grasmere edition. Fine set books like new, all in jackets with yapped edges and original wooden shipping box. Vol. one jacket very slight wear at top, jackets on two thru nine are basically untouched, jacket on vol. ten has a tear on back panel and around onto spine. The paper on the back panel of this jacket is still complete, tear probably happened removing the book at some point. There must have been a piece of wood over the front of the box (you can see the nail holes) but this is missing. The inside of the box is lined with paper, a couple of pieces of which are laid in. Hard to image a more complete or finer set in existence. Could ship overseas at cost. [Attributes: In Dust Jacket]

Bannon, Arthur H.
Columbus, Oh.: F.B. Toothaker, 1911. 48pp., plus eight full-page plates from photographs. Original printed wrappers, cloth backstrip, typed paper label affixed to lower portion of backstrip. Wrappers lightly stained and worn. Very clean internally. Very good. A rare and engaging account of a hunting trip to northwest Canada in the summer of 1910. Ohioans Arthur Bannon and his companion, James Blair, went in over the White Pass and Yukon Railway, down the Lewis to Selkirk at the beginning of the Yukon proper, up the Pelly River to the mouth of the Macmillan, and up that river to country about 275 miles east of Selkirk. They hunted mountain sheep, black bears, grizzlies, caribou, moose, and more, assisted by a cook and guide named Grant Jennings, a veteran of the Klondike Gold Rush of 1898. Bannon relates their hunting experiences, and also describes their travels, the scenery, and the history of the region. "A superb hunting narrative" - MIDLAND NOTES. "This is a plain, straightforward and most interesting account of a hunting trip, mainly for mountain sheep, in Yukon Territory....[Bannon] gives a good picture of the country through which he passed and his hunting experiences are quite absorbing" - Streeter. The Streeter copy was bound in original cloth; the present copy is in original printed wrappers.
