        The Principles of Scientific Management.

New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1911 - Octavo. Original red cloth, titles to spine and front board in gilt, publisher's device to front board in blind. Extremities a little rubbed, top corners of boards a little bumped, light ink stain to bottom corner of boards and text block, faint dampstaining to fore edge of front free endpaper and first 8 leaves. A very good copy. First trade edition, preceded only by the privately distributed edition in the same year. "F. W. Taylor, an engineer in the Bethlehem Steel Works in Philadelphia, was the originator of what he called 'scientific management', now known as 'time and motion study'. His system was based on what he estimated to be a fair day's work and the best means of ensuring such a standard of production. He was interested in any factor that hindered or helped in attaining this end, and besides studying factory conditions and methods in great detail he was responsible for fundamental changes in machinery and machine tools. The main lines of approach to increased efficiency were standardising processes and machines, time and motion study, and payment by results, all of which have been welcomed in the USSR, where 'Stakhanovism' is virtually 'Taylorism' renamed, and in Germany, where the Principles was translated and achieved a wide circulation (31,000 copies sold by 1922). The adoption of his methods there contributed notably to the speedy recovery of German production after the First World War. His methods were anathema to trade unionists almost everywhere else" (PMM). Downs, Books That Changed America, 17; Norman 2059; Printing and the Mind of Man 403. [Attributes: First Edition]

Plan of Crystal Palace, Sydenham. For Sale by Auction by Howard Frank, of Messrs. Knight, Frank & Rutley, and J. Roy Lancaster of |Messrs. Horne & Co.

1911 - London: Knight, Frank & Rutley, 1911. Tinted lithograph, 1010 x 1270mm. Laid on linen, original binding folds. A large plan of Crystal Palace, adapted from the Ordnance Survey by the surveyors Horne & Co, and lithographed by Martin, Hood & Larkin. It was published in the auction catalogue for the auction sale of Crystal Palace in 1911, and details the grounds and the buildings in the immediate surroundings, including the railways stations and fire station. It shows the site of 'Sir Hiram Maxim's Captive Flying Machines', a fairground ride designed by the inventor of tre Maxim machine gun. The Crystal Palace was built in Hyde Park as a temporary building to house the Great Exhibition of 1851. Such was its popularity that it was re-erected in modified form at a permanent home in Sydenham in 1852, with two new railway stations to service it. Despite many successful exhibitions the owners went bankrupt in 1909; an announcement in The Times on 11th September 1911 set the date of the sale as 28th November 1911. However the auctioneer, Howard Frank, started a campaign to get the park saved for the nation. He has a luxurious brochure produced, containing fifty-two pages of photographs and engravings and sixty-four pages of text. It weighed approximately 3¼lb (without this map which was in a separate cover) and measured 16½in by 11in. The Lord Mayor of London, Sir Thomas Strong, called a meeting at the Mansion House for 23 October, for ‘all public bodies and persons interested in the acquisition of the Crystal Palace and its grounds for the use of the public forever’. The Mayor of Hampstead, William Woodward, wrote a letter to The Times, worried that the grounds were in danger of being given over to ‘football matches and other attractions for vulgar mobs’. Fortunately Robert Windsor-Clive, Lord Plymouth and Lord Lieutenant of Glamorgan, came forward with a deposit of £20,000 and, after reaching an agreement with the Court of Chancery, the rest of the sale price of 210,000. On the 9th November The Times ran a headline 'THE CRYSTAL PALACE SAVED'; by 1913 a fund started by the Lord Mayor was used to buy the park from Lord Plymouth. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        The Thousand Secrets

London: Everett & Co., Ltd., 1911. First Edition. Very good antiquarian condition. 8vo. [6], 312 pp. On p. 3 an image of an EMOJI ingeniously composed on a typewriter. Original publisher's red cloth, on upper cover a color-printed illustration of a skull, a typewriter, and a creepy hand typing the same EMOJI. Binding recased new pastedowns and endpapers, some soiling on lower cover. Published more than a century ago, this serial-killer thriller must surely be the first EMOJI mystery: at each crime scene the murderer leaves a cryptic typewritten "Smiley Face." Questions remain: did the murderer bring his or her own typewriter to the scene of the crimes? Were potential murder victims excluded because they did not own a typewriter? The first chapter is entitled: "Taxi of Death." What's not to like? THE SETTING: London and Paris. THE PROTAGONIST: Dick Dauntsey of Her Majesty's Secret Service. THE PLOT: Detective Dauntsey must investigate a series of alarming typewritten notes, always accompanied by a typewritten EMOJI of a grinning face. In a first-person narrative (antedating Dashiell Hammett), Dauntsey relates a compelling story which immediately begins with the discovery of the corpse of Harold, 7th Baron Lilifford in in a taxi cab. We are drawn to the taxi by the screams of a young woman, Gerta Kramm (naturally she is strikingly beautiful), the daughter of an old recluse. Throughout the case Daunsey is guided and misguided by the grinning EMOJI notes, and it is through them that he meets "The Lady in Black." Of course he falls in love with Gerta, which naturally complicates everything; but in this regard the present mystery exceeds our expectations, namely that their alliance is so dangerous that it almost lead the British nation into war. As expected, Dauntsey's own death at the hands of a league of conspirators is narrowly averted. Can Dauntsey solve the mystery of the Thousand Secrets? Selborne's other novels " The House of the Siren" and "The Lady in Black " seem equally scarce, but "The Thousand Secrets" is very difficult to obtain in attractive state, as here. COMMENT: On the verso of the title-page is the publisher's statement that the book was copyrighted in America by Mitchell Kennerley in 1911. This information is correct, but it is noteworthy that the book was not published in this country until 1915; therefore this London edition is the first.

Paul Klee - Catalogue raisonné Alle 9 Bänder zum Sondersparpreis

NEUBUCH!!!

British Colonial India at the Time of the Delhi Durbar of 1911. [our title]

n.p. 1911 - 196 photos plus 16 trimmed photo postcards. Photos inserted four to a page in the windows (10 x 7cm.) on both sides of the 24 moderately-thick leaves in two albums (each album having 12 leaves). Rather appealing amateur photos of decent quality. Captions in white ink on album leaves for about 25 photos. Oblong albums (one in green cloth and one in brown). 29 x 23cm. Photo postcards trimmed to fit in similar-sized photo windows but here merely laid in. Album compiled by an unidentified Englishman who attended the 1911 Delhi Durbar which was attended by King George V and Queen Mary. There are about 20 photos of the event but no direct photos of the King or Queen. There are photos of Hotel Metropole in Nainital and perhaps other hill stations. A few photos show English pastimes (lawn bowling, cricket, a golf course). Nine photos show hunters or big game trophies (tiger, leopard and horned antelope/deer). Other photos show dogs, presumably belonging to the compiler. While there are no Indian photos of the compiler's family, 20 of the photos in the second album are of a British family somewhere in Britain, possibly on holiday. Those photos are followed by twelve seaside/nautical pictures which seem more likely to be British than Indian. The trimmed photo postcards also have a European rather than Indian setting and are photos of the same family that shows up in the other non-Indian photos. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Stories from Hans Andersen with Illustrations by Edmund Dulac (Signed Limited Edition)

London: Hodder & Stoughton. 1911. First Edition. Full Leather. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall Limited Edition This Edition de Luxe is limited to Seven Hundred and Fifty copies signed by the Artist, and numbered, of which this is No. 48. 28 tipped-in colour plates as called for. This is a lovely clean copy internally, except for browning to endpapers and page edges, and a 1917 presentation inscription (Prize for Music & Reading) to verso of limitation page. Sadly the publisher's white vellum binding is not so good, hence the greatly reduced price, The boards are warped, soiled and spotted with some ink marks, and the silk ties are missing. A not-to-be-missed opportunity to obtain this exquisitely illustrated edition of Hans Andersen's stories at an affordable price. As the contents are fine, this is a prime candidate for a bespoke rebind (this can be arranged if required, please get in touch to discuss). .
