La Divina Commedia di Dante Allighieri

1911. (DANTE) ALIGHIERI, Dante. La Divina Commedia di Dante Allighieri. (Milan: Antonio Vallardi, 1965). Three volumes. Folio (12-1/2 by 18 inches), original half gray morocco, black and blue morocco spine labels, gray linen boards, top edges gilt. Each volume housed in matching gray linen slipcase. $1500.Fine facsimile reproduction of the splendid 1795 Bodoni printing of Dante’s masterpiece of world literature, the Divine Comedy, number 669 of 875 copies, finely bound in three folio volumes.“Dante’s theme, the greatest yet attempted in poetry, was to explain and justify the Christian cosmos through the allegory of a pilgrimage… The audacity of his theme, the success of its treatment, the beauty and majesty of his verse, have ensured that his poem never lost its reputation. The picture of divine justice is entirely unclouded by Dante’s own political prejudices, and his language never falls short of what he describes” (PMM 8). Giambattista Bodoni (1740-1813) was an Italian engraver, publisher, printer and typographer of high repute; he designed the family of typefaces now known as Bodoni. His Divine Comedy of 1795—reproduced here in full facsimile—is widely considered a landmark in the history of printing. Text in the original Italian.         Zuleika Dobson

William Heinemann, Ltd, London, 1911 First edition, first impression, first issue binding.Octavo. Original smooth brown cloth, titles to spine gilt. Housed in a brown morocco fire box by the French Bindery, Garden City, New York.Hinges tender, but a very nice copy indeed. Inscribed by the author on the half title page, "by Max Beerbohm Rapallo, Italy 'Oxford! The very sound of the word spoken, or sight of it printed, is fraught for me with most actual magic.'" Laid in is a slip of paper, headed 'From the Rosenbach Collection' and with a typed description of this book beneath. This inscribed copy of Beerbohm's only novel - and probably his most enduring work - is one of just a tiny handful known. Mark Samuels Lasner reports having seen just the two other examples in his own collection.[127]

        New Machiavelli

1911. First Edition . Signed. WELLS, H.G. The New Machiavelli. London: John Lane, the Bodley Head, 1911. Octavo, original red cloth. $2000.First English edition of this roman a clef, inscribed by Wells on the front free endpaper in the year of publication, ""R.A.G.s from H.G. 1911"" Presented to and from the collection of Wells’ close friend and frequent scientific adviser, Sir Richard Arman Gregory.""The narrator, Remington, is a version of Wells, as is Wilkins the novelist, who had previously made a cameo appearance in Ann Veronica and who would appear in several later novels. Among other recognizable figures, Isabel Rivers is based on Amber [with whom Wells was having an affair], Oscar and Altiora Baileys on the Webbs, Willesley on Wallas, Evesham on Balfour, Cossington on Harmsworth and the Cramptons on C.P. and G.M. Trevelyan. For contemporary readers, this was history hot from the press, enlivened by scathing pen portraits. Wells offered the book to Macmillan in October 1909, assuring him that it was a political novel that contained nothing morally controversial… Macmillan told Wells that there was twice as much reason to reject The New Machiavelli as there had been to reject Ann Veronica"" (Sherborne, 210). ""The opening chapters of The New Machiavelli are notable for their description of Bromley at the time of the author's childhood"" (Hammond). First published in New York in 1910. Hammond A7. Wells 40. Inscribed to noted British scientist and Wells' lifelong friend Sir Richard Arman Gregory. In Wells' first work of fiction, he dedicated the work to Gregory as his ""dearest friend."" The two met while students at the Normal School of Science in South Kensington. They jointly authored a textbook, Honours Physiography, in 1891. Reportedly, Gregory was the one person with whom Wells never quarreled. A professor of astronomy, Gregory also possessed expertise in physics, chemistry and other disciplines; he wrote several textbooks and eventually assumed the editorship of the journal Nature, to which Wells frequently contributed. The author often turned to Gregory, and to the experts Gregory contacted on Wells' behalf, for insight and encouragement when writing his famous ""scientific romances."" After Wells' death, Gregory worked to establish the H.G. Wells Memorial to preserve public attention to his friend's body of work. Throughout his life Gregory was a passionate advocate for science—""It is necessary to believe in the holiness of scientific work,"" he once declared—and ""an optimist about man's future"" (Horrabin, in New Scientist, April 11, 1957).A bit of foxing to first few and last few leaves; spine sunned. An exceptionally good presentation-association copy.

HIGH GERMANY: Eleven Sets of Verse.

London:: Duckworth & Co.,. 1911.. First edition. Scarce volume of poetry published during the run-up to WWI. Ezra Pound, its first reviewer, noted: "Mr. Hueffer is making some sort of experiment in modernity. The results will displease most readers. They are nonetheless interesting ... [two of the poems] are true music. They are rare music. And the book is interesting, let us say to me personally, because Mr Hueffer is searching ... for a vital something which has in too great a degree slipped out of modern poetry" (Poetry Review, March 1912, "The Book of the Month"). Harvey [A35] notes copies with and without an errata leaf tipped before p.[vii]--this copy does not appear to have every had one. Original tan wrappers, lettered and decorated in green. Lacking the front endpaper. Covers lightly soiled and moderated foxing to prelims and page edges, otherwise, very good or better. .

        The Principles of Scientific Management

New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers,, 1911. Octavo. Original red cloth, titles to spine and front board in gilt, publisher's device to front board in blind. Extremities a little rubbed, top corners of boards a little bumped, light ink stain to bottom corner of boards and text block, faint dampstaining to fore edge of front free endpaper and first 8 leaves. A very good copy. First trade edition, preceded only by the privately distributed edition in the same year. "F. W. Taylor, an engineer in the Bethlehem Steel Works in Philadelphia, was the originator of what he called 'scientific management', now known as 'time and motion study'. His system was based on what he estimated to be a fair day's work and the best means of ensuring such a standard of production. He was interested in any factor that hindered or helped in attaining this end, and besides studying factory conditions and methods in great detail he was responsible for fundamental changes in machinery and machine tools. The main lines of approach to increased efficiency were standardising processes and machines, time and motion study, and payment by results, all of which have been welcomed in the USSR, where 'Stakhanovism' is virtually 'Taylorism' renamed, and in Germany, where the Principles was translated and achieved a wide circulation (31,000 copies sold by 1922). The adoption of his methods there contributed notably to the speedy recovery of German production after the First World War. His methods were anathema to trade unionists almost everywhere else" (PMM).

        The Tale of Timmy Tiptoes.

London: Frederick Warne & Co., 1911 - Sextodecimo. Original green boards, spine and front board lettered in white, pictorial label with illustration to front cover, pictorial endpapers. Contemporary gift inscription to front free endpaper. Boards gently bowed, contents a little cockled. An excellent copy. 27 colour plates. First edition. The first two printings are believed to be identical. The story of Timmy and Goody Tiptoes is the only Beatrix Potter story apparently set in North America - although this is implicit rather than stated anywhere in the book. All the main animal characters are indigenous to North America: grey squirrels, chipmunks and a "large bear", but the waters are muddied somewhat by the presence of Yellowhammers (or Emberiza citrinella, the birds which sing "Little bita bread and-no-cheese!"), whose range includes Europe and much of Asia but not America.         THE PALE APE AND OTHER PULSES .

Published at Clifford's Inn, London by T. Werner Laurie n.d. [1911]., London - Octavo, pp. [1-8] 1-339 [340: printer's imprint] [341-344 ads] [note: first leaf is a blank], half title and title leaves printed in orange and black, original pictorial green cloth, front and spine panels stamped in yellow, publisher's monogram stamped in yellow on rear panel. First edition, first issue (with "happenings" in title on front cover). Collects twelve stories, including "Huguenin's Wife," "The House of Sounds" (a revised version of "Vaila") which H. P. Lovecraft termed "Shiel's undoubted masterpiece . This story, in its final form, deserves a place among the foremost things of its kind," and Shiel's horrific ghost story "The Bride," as well as three tales featuring Cummings King Monk. Barron (ed), Fantasy and Horror 4-136. Barron (ed), Horror Literature 3-177. Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 1469. Bleiler (ed), Supernatural Fiction Writers: Fantasy and Horror, pp. 364-65. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 196. Lovecraft, Supernatural Horror in Literature, p. 77. Morse, The Works of M. P. Shiel Updated (1980), p. 181-82. An unusual copy, with the original plain endpapers replaced with handsome green marbled papers. Additionally, there are half a dozen marginal notes possibly made by English literary critic Wilfrid Hugh Chesson, with whom Shiel corresponded for 40 years, but, more likely, made by John Gawswoth. The most substantial note, on page 69, reads: "On Monday 16 June 1924 M. P. Shiel told W.H.C. that something W.H.C. had written had caused him M.P.S. to write this chapter on 'savages' and that for the sake of uttering this piece of criticism he had but enough story matter with it to make a volume. "Cloth lightly worn at spine ends and corner tips, cloth rubbed along outer joints, page edges darkened, a very good copy. A nice copy of one of Shiel's scarcer titles and a book that is seldom found in nice condition. (#156858) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Circuit Europeen / 1r Beaumont 2e Garros sur monoplan Bleriot, Moteur Gnome Magneto Bosch, Helice Normale

Mabileau & Co, Paris 1911 - Hand-coloured pochoir print. Very good condition apart from some overall light toning. Several skilfully reapired tears at edges. The picture is touting Beaumont as the winner of the 1911 Circuit of Europe Air Race. André Beaumont was a pseudonym used by Jean Conneau. Conneau collected $ 32,000 for his victory. The Gamy-Montaut prints document various historical events in the early history of motorized transportation, including Power Boat Racing, Motorcycle and Motor Car Racing, Motor Car Touring, Zeppelins and Airplanes. Having observed the rapidly growing interest in cars and racing during the early years of motor cars, Ernest Montaut produced his first motoring prints in the mid-1890s, and by 1897, his drawings were pictorial records of the many races in France. Montaut's work was extremely well received in the Paris of his day and was shown in the fashionable shops of the Rue de l'Opera and Rue de la Paix, as well as in the better galleries. Marguerite Montaut, Ernest's wife, joined him in his work producing not only racing prints but also developing a fine series of aviation prints commemorating such events as the first flights on the early European mail routes. While Marguerite Montaut's works were occasionally signed "M. Montaut", she also used the name "Gamy", an anagram for Magy. The Gamy-Montaut prints were all produced by the pochoir process in which the outlines for each image were drawn onto lithographic stones and printed. Using these uncoloured prints as a template, elaborate stencils were cut for each colour. Water-colour was then brushed onto the image through the stencil. The colouring process was quite complex, with each print taking several days to produce. It was also quite labour intensive, and the studio of Gamy-Montaut therefore employed a group of trained artists, including Nevil and Campion, to assist in the colouring. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

China. No. 1 (1911). Despatches from Sir A. Hosie Forwarding Reports Respecting the Opium Question in China.

London. His Majesty's Stationery Office. June1911. Despatches from Sir A.Hosie: 23pp. Original wrappers, lower corners and edges, little creased, very good. Quarto. These papers contain reports on the suppression of opium cultivation in the opium producing provinces of China, assembled by Consul-General Sir Alexander Hosie (1853-1925) one of the leading members of the British consular service in China of his time. They cover the provinces of Shansi, Shensi, and Kansu, together with other reports from Szechuan and Yunnan. Based partly on his own journeys and observations, they also contain contributions from long resident British miss-ionaries in the several provinces. A remarkable change was taking place in China at this time. This is explained in the contemporary account given at pp.409-410 of Samuel Couling's Encyclopaedia Sinica (Shanghai, Kelly and Walsh, 1917) which provides the necessary back-ground to Hosie's reports. There had been a gradual spread of opium cultivation within China and Manchuria in the later 19th century, with a shift in both public consumption and taste away from the Indian opium imported largely by British and Indian firms from the 18th century on. At the same time, a strong anti-opium movement had been developing in China during the final decades of the Manchu dynasty, and by 1906 had obliged the Court to issue an edict ordering the abolition of opium smoking within ten years. Also, and in the same year, the British parliament had entered into a ten year agreement with China whereby the export of opium from India was to be reduced by one-tenth annually, in return for a similar reduction in opium production there. An Inter-national Opium Commission sat at Shanghai in 1909 and agreed to assist China in its efforts to stop opium trade and cultivation, and it met again at The Hague in 1911. Both the movement and the change of attitude among officials and people were genuine. Hosie himself considered that "No question has ever stirred the Chinese Empire so profoundly as that of opium suppression", and the detailed reports contained in these papers seem to bear this out. By then, too, Couling added, a stigma was now being universally attached to opium smoking.Unfortunately, the change of government brought about by the Chinese Revolution of 1911-12, and the Warlord Era which followed would disrupt the work: but even so, Britain discontinued the export of Indian opium before the ten year agreement had ended. Couling's Encyclopaedia Sinica was reprinted by Oxford University Press, Hong Kong in 1983. (When referring to this item please quote stockid 142940).
