        Oscar Wilde and His Mother.

London: Everett & Co., LTD., , 1911 . A Memoir. Octavo. Original green cloth, spine and front board lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, blind-tooled fillet border to covers, gilt fillet to spine ends, gilt flower to front board. Pencil portrait of Oscar Wilde to frontspiece. Tissue guard intact. Anna Comtesse de Brémont's Armorial ownership bookplate to pastedown. Lightly bumped at corners, small stains to rear boards, edges lightly browned, contents clean throughout, a very good copy. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy inscribed by the author to Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree, one of the great figures of the English theatre, who became the most successful actor-manager of his time. Oscar Wilde said of Tree: "a charming fellow, and so clever: he models himself on me."; Anna de Brémont Comtesse was an old friend of Lady Wilde and claimed to share a "mysterious soul-sympathy" with Oscar. The inscription is dated "May 22nd 1911" and refers to Tree's position at His Majesty's Theatre, a managerial post he had maintained since 1897. The book also contains an inscription by the author referring to the fact that she reacquired the copy "at the sale of the library of Sir Herbert Tree in the autumn of 1921".

Svobodnaia Piesn': Sbornik Revoliutsionnykh Piesn; i Stikhotvorenii [=] Russian Songs of Freedom

Max N. Maisel, New York 1911 - A compilation of Russian "songs of freedom" and revolutionary poems by various authors. Some of the works included here are early printings of Ruzrushennyi Mol' ("The Ruined Pier"), by Grigorii Gershuni, a Russian revolutionary and a founder of the Socialist Revolutionary Party; and Maxim Gorky's Piesnia o Bureviestnikie ("The Song of the Stormy Petrel"). Undoubtedly, however, one of the most interesting poems is Fedorushka, here erroneously attributed to Leo Tolstoy. The poem was actually written in 1880 by Mikhail Rozengeim, for whose poetry the term "liberal accusation" was coined. Tolstoy, who disliked this particular poem, expressed great displeasure at the incorrect attribution. The mistake was most likely made by the publisher, Max N. Maisel, whose shop in the Lower East Side was frequented by many political and cultural radicals. E-book format only in OCLC as of October, 2014. First edition, 12mo (18.25cm.); contemporary black cloth, private paper spine label printed in manuscript; 159pp.; hinges weak, textblock shaken, page edges soiled, old crude tape repair to index page; Good.         ALICE IN WONDERLAND and THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS (Superior Example of Macmillan's 1911 First Color Alice)

London: Macmillan, 1911. "Lewis Carroll" (Charles L[utwidge] Dodgson). ALICE IN WONDERLAND and THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS. London: Macmillan & Co, 1911. With ninety-two illustrations by John Tenniel including sixteen in colour. First Edition, thus, in original publisher's red cloth decorated in gold. Macmillan, finally, after 45 years and hundreds of Alice printings, came out with this attractive FIRST COLOUR EDITION of both Alice stories. These larger format color illustrations are nothing short of superb and it's remarkable how few nice copies of this edition can be found in commerce. This example is Very Good indeed. The cloth is relatively fresh and remarkably unworn save for some unfortunate shelf wear to the bottom edge which is the reason the only reason we've not graded this superior example as Near Fine. The internal contents are fine, the plates are fine and unfoxed. There is a tiny bit of browning to the endpapers else as nice a copy of the first color Alice as we've seen in a long while. First Edition Thus. Decorative Boards. Very Good. Illus. by John Tenniel.

Paul Klee - Catalogue raisonné Alle 9 Bänder zum Sondersparpreis

NEUBUCH!!!

        The Principles of Scientific Management.

New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers,, 1911. Octavo. Original red cloth, titles to spine and front board in gilt, publisher's device to front board in blind. Trivial rubbing to tips, a fine copy. First trade edition, preceded only by the privately distributed edition in the same year. "F. W. Taylor, an engineer in the Bethlehem Steel Works in Philadelphia, was the originator of what he called 'scientific management', now known as 'time and motion study'. His system was based on what he estimated to be a fair day's work and the best means of ensuring such a standard of production. He was interested in any factor that hindered or helped in attaining this end, and besides studying factory conditions and methods in great detail he was responsible for fundamental changers in machinery and machine tools. The main lines of approach to increased efficiency were standardising processes and machines, time and motion study, and payment by results, all of which have been welcomed in the USSR, where 'Stakhanovism' is virtually 'Taylorism' renamed, and in Germany, where the Principles was translated and achieved a wide circulation (31,000 copies sold by 1922). The adoption of his methods there contributed notably to the speedy recovery of German production after the First World War. His methods were anathema to trade unionists almost everywhere else" (PMM).

The Mariner's Mirror; The Quarterly Journal of the Society for Nautical Research

02 - Greenwich - The Society for Nautical Research 1911 - 88 volumes, bound as 59, of theinternational journal of the Society for Nautical Research; an exceptional private run from 1911-2003. The journal has been published since 1911, and is recognised as the leading journal for its subject of naval and maritime history. The European Reference Index for the Humanitiesclassifies itas an INT1 journal (the highest),meaning it enjoys internationally recognised significanceand influence among scholars and esearchers, and is regularly cited by academics all over the world. Covering all periods from pre-hisory to the modern world, this represents an unparalled resource of information on maritime and naval matters. Each volume is replete with illustrations, often including maps, paintings, photographs, and tables. Fold-out illustrations can be found in volumes 4, 5, 11, 14, 16, 17, 20, 18, 22, 25, 26,36, 54, 59, 63, 66, 67, 68, and 70. Many of the early volumes include question and answer sections from readers appended. Many issues are demarcated into their separate quarterly parts, which are bound together with their separate title pages. Volumes 22 and 87/88 have the original wrappers of these quarterly sections bound in. Volumes 75/6 and 77/8 have adverts from the publisher bound in. In the case of 75/76 they are seperately paginated. As a previously private collection, this set is free from any library markings; a run of this length in this unmarked condition is very scarce indeed. Volumes 1-11, 13-14, and 16 are Kraus reprints in the original cloth. Volumes 12 and 15 are the original works in various bindings. Volumes 17-18 and 25-88 are bound in pairs, and along with the single volumes are in the original publisher's cloth. The exceptions are volumes 19, 21, and 24, which are in half morocco and like volumes 12 and 15 are clearly of different provenance. Volume 'XXXVI' is also in a subtly different cloth binding, though it still appears original. Nearly a century's worth of study into maritime and naval affairs, handsomely presented in a remarkably uniform and attractive run. Condition: Volumes 1-11, 13-14, & 16 are Kraus reprints in full cloth. Volume 15 is in full morocco. The 1933, 35, and 38 volumes are in half morocco. All other volumes are in the original cloth with paper covered boards. The Kraus reprints are externally excellent, with almost no discernable wear, and internally are clean and bright and firmly bound. Volume 12 is externally smart though with a little general wear and some light marking to the boards. It has a contemporary ink inscription to the front free endpaper. It is somewhat spotted for the first and last few pages as normal, and firmly bound. Volume15 is a litle rubbed at the extremities and head and tail of the spine. Internally it is mildly age toned but otherwise clean and firmly bound. The 1933, 35, and 38 volumes are externally smart, though with some light rubbing at the extremities and to the spine. The 1933 volume has some small damage to the spine, affecting the gilt date. Internally they are a little more age toned but generally clean, and firmly bound. Their foredges are a little spotted. Of the other volumes, they are mostly externally very smart indeed. Volume 22 has a spotted foredge. Volumes 35 and 45/6 have some marking to their boards. Internally, generally remarkably clean and bright. Volume 20 has some spotting internally. Volumes 87/88 have water damage from page 382 onwards. All are firmly bound. Krauss reprints overall: FINE. Volume 12 overall: VERY GOOD. Volume 15 overall: VERY GOOD. 1933,35,38 volumes overall: VERY GOOD INDEED. All other volumes: NEAR FINE [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Plants of Southern New Jersey with Especial Reference to the Flora of the Pine Barrens and the Geographic Distribution of the Species [in the] Annual Report of the New Jersey State Museum (1910).

      - Trenton: New Jersey State Museum, 1911. First edition (890, index). Folding map, frontis, and 129 plates illustrating the flora of the Barrens. Tall octavo in green cloth and gilt titles. One doubts even an exceptionally rare plant was overlooked in this comprehensive account. A typical entry includes the plant’s formal botanic name (e.g., viburnham nudum L.), its common name (larger witherod), references to earlier descriptions (Linnaeus, Barton, Knieskern, Britton), the plant’s distribution (swamps of the barrens), etc. Witmer Stone (1866- 1939), perhaps better known as an ornithologist and for his work on migratory birds (See Birds Studies at Old Cape May, our book No. 1694), had a “life-long interest in botany [which] inspired a ten-year period of intensive botanical field studies of the New Jersey pine barrens. and the consequent accumulation of many thousands of botanical specimens” (Rehn, Auk). An authoritative work, a book to have at one’s elbow while reading John McPhee’s Pine Barrens. A very good, clean copy. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Svobodnaia Piesn': Sbornik Revoliutsionnykh Piesn; i Stikhotvorenii [=] Russian Songs of Freedom

New York: Max N. Maisel, 1911. A compilation of Russian "songs of freedom" and revolutionary poems by various authors.

5. Werk der Pan-Presse. Rodenberg 452. Hayn-Gotendorf IX, 286. Schwarz L 82. Brandis-Feilchenfeldt 39.A.

1911. [the FINE Doheny copy] New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1911. 1 preliminary page + 4 pp undated ads. Original red cloth. First Edition of Edith Wharton's best-known book, a grim novella sited on a bleak Massachusetts farm. "As in THE HOUSE OF MIRTH, the central problem is that of the barriers imposed by local convention upon an individual whose happiness depends on rising above them" [OCAL].~This copy's leaves have a gilt top edge, and the word "wearily" is printed properly at the bottom of p. 135. Both the 2500 copies with gilt top edge and the 3500 copies with plain top edge appear with this word both perfect and battered: since it is generally assumed that "wearily" became battered during the 6000-copy print run, one cannot assume that the copies with gilt top edge were printed or issued earlier than the copies with plain top edge.~In any event, this is a remarkably fine, bright copy, without soil or wear. Garrison A19.1.a. Provenance: bookplates of Howard De Forest and of Estelle Doheny. Housed in a morocco-backed slipcase with inner chemise.

La Comedia del divino Dante Alighieri da Firenze con la esposizione di Giuseppe Landino Passerini da Cortona.

In Firenze. Apresso L. S. Olschki, 1911. Hard Cover. 3 p.l., [v]-xl, [1], 524 p., 1 l.; 43.5 cm. Reproduces 101 facsimiles of woodcuts in the Venice, 1491 edition. A magnificent effort of book production to celebrate the 700th anniversary of the Divine Comedy. Gabriele d'Annunzio was to have contributed a life of Dante. He never completed it, so his 'Vita' was replaced by an earlier, already published essay on Dante. Everything else is first-rate. The handmade paper was commissioned for this edition, which was printed in 300 copies. (this is number 41). The binding is leather over wooden boards with iron clasps, bosses, and a bust of Dante (in six copies, one of which is in the Pierpont Morgan Library, the clasps, bosses, etc. are of silver). In this copy the previous owner, a Dante scholar, began annotating on the title-page, the beautiful title-page. He made two notes, then came to his senses (or someone beat him senseless). The NUC (132: 646: ND0037108) records five copies: DLC, CU, FU, DCU, MH. We have had a clamshell box made for it by James DiMarcantonio, Hope Bindery & Box Company. The condition is generally excellent; there is some scuffing, a few of the nails for the ironwork have come out. We had the leather of the clasps replaced. One of the great editions of Dante. OB1000.

        The Tale of Timmy Tiptoes.

London: Frederick Warne & Co.,, 1911. Sextodecimo. Original brown boards, titles to spine and front board white, pictorial label to front cover, pictorial endpapers. With the printed glassine jacket. Housed in a custom brown quarter morocco and cloth solander box. Frontispiece and 26 colour illustrations by the author. Boards a little bowed, short closed tear to foot of p. 51; an excellent copy in the jacket with some shallow chips to extremities. First edition. Intended to please her American readers, the main animal characters in the book are indigenous to North America: grey squirrels, chipmunks, and a "large bear". The inclusion of yellowhammers (Emberiza citrinella, the birds which sing "Little bita bread and-nocheese!") was a mistake, as their range includes Europe and much of Asia but not America. The first two impressions are indistinguishable.
