Renoir signed image of a seascape painting, certified by the Mayor of Cagnes-Sur-Mer where Renoir lived for the last 12 years of his life - from the archive of Renoir's art dealer and friend, Ambroise Vollard

Segovia, January 10, 1911. 7.25" x 10". "Photographic Image Signed ""Renoir"" on the photographic surface, black & white, 6.75"" x 5.75"", overall size, 7.25"" x 10"". Mounted on 9"" x 11.5"" art board. Fine condition. The photograph was originally part of the archive of art collector and dealer, Ambrose Vollard (1868-1939). The number ""983"" is in pencil at the upper edge of the mount, probably to identify the location of his origibal painting. In order to avoid any future disputes regarding the authenticity of works by artists Vollard represented, he had all the original paintings photographed, then asked the artist to sign each photo, and had the signature witnessed. The purple stamping beneath Renoir'`s signature is in French with the artist's name and date witnessed in manuscript: ""Seen in order to authenticate / the signature of / Pierre Auguste Renoir, artist painter / above affixed / Cagnes the 10 January 1911."" Signed by the Mayor of Cagnes-Sur-Mer to the right of his official circular stamping in French: ""Cagnes / Alpes Maritimes"" with ""Mayor"" inside of a laurel."

British Colonial India at the Time of the Delhi Durbar of 1911. [our title]

n.p. 1911 - 196 photos plus 16 trimmed photo postcards. Photos inserted four to a page in the windows (10 x 7cm.) on both sides of the 24 moderately-thick leaves in two albums (each album having 12 leaves). Rather appealing amateur photos of decent quality. Captions in white ink on album leaves for about 25 photos. Oblong albums (one in green cloth and one in brown). 29 x 23cm. Photo postcards trimmed to fit in similar-sized photo windows but here merely laid in. Album compiled by an unidentified Englishman who attended the 1911 Delhi Durbar which was attended by King George V and Queen Mary. There are about 20 photos of the event but no direct photos of the King or Queen. There are photos of Hotel Metropole in Nainital and perhaps other hill stations. A few photos show English pastimes (lawn bowling, cricket, a golf course). Nine photos show hunters or big game trophies (tiger, leopard and horned antelope/deer). Other photos show dogs, presumably belonging to the compiler. While there are no Indian photos of the compiler's family, 20 of the photos in the second album are of a British family somewhere in Britain, possibly on holiday. Those photos are followed by twelve seaside/nautical pictures which seem more likely to be British than Indian. The trimmed photo postcards also have a European rather than Indian setting and are photos of the same family that shows up in the other non-Indian photos. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Stories from Hans Andersen with Illustrations by Edmund Dulac (Signed Limited Edition)

London: Hodder & Stoughton. 1911. First Edition. Full Leather. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall Limited Edition This Edition de Luxe is limited to Seven Hundred and Fifty copies signed by the Artist, and numbered, of which this is No. 48. 28 tipped-in colour plates as called for. This is a lovely clean copy internally, except for browning to endpapers and page edges, and a 1917 presentation inscription (Prize for Music & Reading) to verso of limitation page. Sadly the publisher's white vellum binding is not so good, hence the greatly reduced price, The boards are warped, soiled and spotted with some ink marks, and the silk ties are missing. A not-to-be-missed opportunity to obtain this exquisitely illustrated edition of Hans Andersen's stories at an affordable price. As the contents are fine, this is a prime candidate for a bespoke rebind (this can be arranged if required, please get in touch to discuss). .

Circuit Europeen / 1r Beaumont 2e Garros sur monoplan Bleriot, Moteur Gnome Magneto Bosch, Helice Normale

Paris: Mabileau & Co, 1911. Hand-coloured pochoir print. Very good condition apart from some overall light toning. Several skilfully reapired tears at edges. The picture is touting Beaumont as the winner of the 1911 Circuit of Europe Air Race. André Beaumont was a pseudonym used by Jean Conneau. Conneau collected $ 32,000 for his victory. The Gamy-Montaut prints document various historical events in the early history of motorized transportation, including Power Boat Racing, Motorcycle and Motor Car Racing, Motor Car Touring, Zeppelins and Airplanes.Having observed the rapidly growing interest in cars and racing during the early years of motor cars, Ernest Montaut produced his first motoring prints in the mid-1890s, and by 1897, his drawings were pictorial records of the many races in France. Montaut's work was extremely well received in the Paris of his day and was shown in the fashionable shops of the Rue de l'Opera and Rue de la Paix, as well as in the better galleries.Marguerite Montaut, Ernest's wife, joined him in his work producing not only racing prints but also developing a fine series of aviation prints commemorating such events as the first flights on the early European mail routes. While Marguerite Montaut's works were occasionally signed "M. Montaut", she also used the name "Gamy", an anagram for Magy. The Gamy-Montaut prints were all produced by the pochoir process in which the outlines for each image were drawn onto lithographic stones and printed. Using these uncoloured prints as a template, elaborate stencils were cut for each colour. Water-colour was then brushed onto the image through the stencil. The colouring process was quite complex, with each print taking several days to produce. It was also quite labour intensive, and the studio of Gamy-Montaut therefore employed a group of trained artists, including Nevil and Campion, to assist in the colouring.

Neatly secures with a ribbon. An incredibly fresh example of this scarce limited edition, with bright crisp pages which do not appear to have been read. All tissue guards present and bright without stains or foxing. The tray case is in near fine condition with no rubbing but very slight to spine and a paper shear to the inner lining of the tray case. The stunning book includes a facsimile letter from Mr. Robert T. Lincoln concerning the portrait of his father (used in the frontispiece), and a voluminous number of tipped-in silver print photographs struck from the original negatives in the Meserve Collection. The photographs are arranged by topic and are individually numbered as follows: The Photographs of Abraham Lincoln (100), Lincoln at Gettysburg (3), Mrs. Lincoln and the Sons (4), Photographs of the Vice-Presidents, the Speakers, Members of the Cabinet and others (12), and The Interment of Lincoln (1).Original photographs of Lincoln are very scarce with all but 2 or 3 made only in the last 8 years of his life. Very few of the original negative still exist with numerous destroyed in the Chicago and Boston fires. A fantastic collection of photographs that span the whole of Lincoln's career.About the Meserve-Kunhardt Foundation:The Meserve-Kunhardt Foundation is a New York State 501 (c) (3) corporation dedicated to the preservation of photography and the use of it to inform, educate and inspire.         Romance, op. 4 - Autograph Musical Quotation

      - A scarce AMQS from the important violinist and influential pedagogue, teacher of Elman, Heifetz, Milstein, Zimbalist, Parlow, Schumsky and many others. Auer has penned the first three measures of his Romance in F major for violin and piano (op. 4), which was recorded a few years later by the young Heifetz in 1911. Signed and inscribed to the British violinist and composer "Miss Eva Spalding" (1882 - 1969), and dated London, July 8, 1908. On a small calendar leaf dated May 29. Top edge folded under; tape remnant at the left edge and on the verso, otherwise in very good condition. 5 x 2.5 inches (12.9 x 6.1 cm).Together with a reproduction of a portrait photograph signed and inscribed to Carl Flesch and dated 1911. Thumbtack hole and light wear; overall fine. 4.75 x 7 inches (12.4 x 17.6 cm).Leopold Auer spent nearly fifty years in St. Petersburg and exerted a decisive influence on the Russian violin school, following Vieuxtemps and Wieniawski as solo violin at the Imperial Ballet. Arensky, Glazunov, Taneyev and Tchaikovsky wrote their most important violin compositions for him. As for Tschaikovsky's violin concerto, Auer refused the dedication, declaring it technically awkward and too long! After a few revisions to the violin part, he eventually played this monumental violin work in 1893, shortly before the composer's death.

THE CELESTIAL OMNIBUS and other Stories.

London: Sidgwick & Jackson, Ltd. 1911 - E. M. Forster. THE CELESTIAL OMNIBUS and other Stories. London: Sidgwick & Jackson, Ltd., 1911. This is a fine copy of Forster's fifth book, and first collection of stories. Contains: "The Story of a Panic," "The Other Side of the Hedge," "The Celestial Omnibus," "Other Kingdom," "The Curate's Friend," and "The Road from Colonus." This is a fine copy in light brown cloth with nice bright gilt lettering and design on the front panel and somewhat less so on the spine. In front and back there are pale grey end-papers designed by Roger Fry. 164 pages followed by 4 pages of publisher's advertisements. There were only 1,000 copies printed of this first issue, incidently, which is fewer than for any of his first four books. Forster's bibliographer, B. J. Kirkpatrick does not mention the presence of a dust jacket for this first issue, although he does for each of the previous four books. We have never seen this title offered for sale with a dust jacket (but neither have we seen any of the earlier books offered with a dust jacket even though Kirkpatrick describes a dust jacket for each of them.) As this is the first of Forster's book printed by Sidgwick & Jackson, we will therefore risk stating that there was no jacket. There is an ownership monogram in ink on the verso of the front blank, dated 4th July 1911, that we interpret as WSE, although we have not been able to identify it. This is an early ownership signature since the book was published on 11th May. There are no other markings in the text. [Kirkpatrick A5] [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

ENCYCLOPAEDIA BRITANNICA: A DICTIONARY OF ARTS, SCIENCES, LITERATURE AND GENERAL INFORMATION (ELEVENTH EDITION, 28 VOLUMES PLUS INDEX VOLUME); DELUXE EDITION, LIMP LEATHER COVERS

New York: Published by the Encyclopaedia Britannica Company, and printed at the University Press in Cambridge, England, 1911. Eleventh Edition. HARDCOVER. Very Good Minus. CONDITION: Volumes show minor edge-and corner- wear. Pages are of fine, thin India paper, and as is typical when diving to the authoritative set of tomes in order to prove a point, we see a crease or wrinkle to one or more of the first few pages. Some front free endapers foxed, stained and/or wrinkled. While there is some rubbing and or fading to some of the spines, overall the leather is in remarkably good shape. Index Volume is red cloth. The Eleventh Edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica represented "in an entirely new and original form a fresh survey of the whole field of human thought and achievement, written by some 1500 eminent specialists drawn from nearly every country of the civilized world, incorporating the results of research and the progress of events up to the middle of 1910." Essentially this work must be thought of as something akin to the Google of today -- massively comprehensive collaboration of the cream of science, art, literature and general information as could be gathered and synthesized century past but that of a century past, with none of the conjecture, hot air, specious claims, conflation of fact with myth, selective target marketing, etc. These volumes represent the first year the entire encyclopedia was issued as a whole ("so as to give an organic unity to the whole work.") and the last year, before the set began, some say, to be gradually "dumbed-down", reduced to its latter-century status as a lower common-denominator, an agglomeration of commonly useful information, widely acknowledged by serious researchers to have de-volved to a shadow of its former self in terms of comprehensiveness, depth, excellence of and commitment to the highest-quality scholarship, source and material. From 1911 onward we see the steady decline of this once-magnificent work of universal reference to the status of obligatory gift for our 12-year olds, that they may bail themselves out of actual thinking. This situation was not so much the result of conscious publisher decision (although there were indeed cost-cutting measures on the table), as it was the availability of world-class scholars. "Later editions reflect the tendency to court public favor by accepting the claims and beliefs of various religious sects. This edition did not consult with religious groups in preparing its articles. The arrangement of articles tended to make the Eleventh Edition a practical reference work for layman rather than an erudite work largely for scholars and educators. The index was a 'model of well-ordered compactness,' and was designed primarily to aid the general reader. It is perhaps the most useful of all books of reference, and represents the combination of learning, research, co-operation and organization in a higher degree than any other of the monumental works of literature and science." After the editors issued the Twelfth Edition (which differed from the Eleventh Edition by the addition of two volumes and an index) they wrote: "neither the minds nor the wills that are required for such an undertaking are any longer obtainable in any corresponding degree, nor probably can they be again for years to come... A shifting of interest has taken place among writers of the academic type, so that there is a disinclination to make the exertion needed for entering anew into their old subjects -- a necessary condition for just that stimulating, vital presentation of old issues in the light of all the accumulated knowledge about them, which was so valuable a feature of the Eleventh Edition. This edition is classically beautiful, -- large (9" x 11 3/4") of full (limp) leather covers, in a color which could most safely be called black, but some of whose volumes still range to the richest dark green. In the center of each page, is the embossed seal of the University at Cambridge, England, comprised of a cross in the center and a lion in each corner. A triple-ruled bright gilt design borders the fronts of each volume of the encyclopaedia proper, with lettering across the top that identifies the book as "Encyclopaedia Britannica Eleventh Edition" and across the bottom, the volume number and the beginning and ending three-alphabetic letters which define the range of that particular volume. This design repeats on the back boards as well. All top edges are gilt, as is the lettering on the spines. The endpapers are a pattern consisting of the seals of each of the colleges which comprise the University at Cambridge, and their year of founding. The final volume, XXIX, is hardcover, cloth-covered -- i.e., NOT leather like the other 28 volumes, fully-tabbed, with recent reinforcement by a professional book conservator) Scarce set. Additional carriage may be solicited. Gorgeous.

Thus Spoke Zarathustra: A Book For All and None

Macmillan, NY, 1911. Limited edition. Hardcover. Fine. "Thus Spoke Zarathustra' is a masterpiece of literature as well as philosophy. It was Nietzsche's own favorite and has proved to be his most popular. In this book he addresses the problem of how to live a fulfilling life in a world without meaning, in the aftermath of 'the death of God.' His solution lies in the idea of eternal recurrence, which he calls 'the highest formula of affirmation that can ever be attained." [Pub, Info] The book introduction informs about how Zarathustra came into being. The contents include Zarathustra's discourses; divided into four parts each having about twenty short chapters. Handsome copy. Good cover, bright spine. This book is #383 of 2000. LIMITED EDITION.
