The New Inferno - With sixteen Drawings by Vernon Hill.

John Lane - The Bodley Head,, 1911. Limited Edition. London / New York, John Lane - The Bodley Head, 1911. Quarto. Frontispiece, 145 pages with XVI full page illustrations. Original, illustrated Hardcover. One of only 320 copies printed. Good condition with some stronger signs of external wear. Private inscription on front free endpaper. Vernon Hill (1887?1972), born in Halifax, Yorkshire, England, was a sculptor, lithographer, illustrator and draughtsman. He began his work in print-making and lithography, and branched out into other artistic forms, such as sculpture. He illustrated several works and created etchings. His more notable works were commissions from Sir Edward Maufe for interior and exterior architectural sculptures on Maufe's buildings, including Guildford Cathedral, the Runnymede Memorial and several churches. He died in 1972.nVernon Hill was born in 1887 in Halifax, Yorkshire. He began formal training in print-making at an early age; at the age 13 he was apprenticed to a lithographer. In about 1908, at the age of 21, Hill moved to London and took up poster illustration, working under John Hassall, a poster designer and illustrator. nFrom 1909 to 1914 Hill received commissions for work as an illustrator on various projects. He created Art Nouveau illustrations for Stephen Phillips' The New Inferno in 1911 and for Richard Pearse Chope's Ballads Weird and Wonderful the following year. In 1912 one of his works was exhibited at the Royal Academy. His etchings were described by Campbell Fine Art as follows:nn "The distinctive allegorical etchings of Vernon Hill are all now scarce. His highly evocative work appears to have evolved entirely independently from the trends of his time, although overtones of the mysticism which so influenced Frederick Carter and Austin Osman Spare can be traced in some of his works."nnHis most notable work as a sculptor is to be seen on various buildings by Sir Edward Maufe, who regularly commissioned Hill.nSome of Hill's finest work can be seen at Guildford Cathedral in Guildford, Surrey. Apart from the reliefs on the south door entrance he carved the angels on the sedilia inside the cathedral, as well as the tongues of flame on the pulpit and lectern. He also carved the arms of Bishop Greig over the inside of the sacristy door and the figure of Saint Ursula over the inside of St Ursula?s Porch.nnAt the east door of the south porch (on either side of the central buttress pier in the south transept) are two magnificent bronze doors set under two arches which feature Vernon Hill?s reliefs. These are depictions of various occupations, of both men and women. The men?s occupations are on the right-hand door and include sowing, woodcutting, fishing, hunting, shepherding and ploughing; on the left-hand door are depicted women's traditional occupations including milking, spinning, and teaching.       This Edition de Luxe is limited to Seven Hundred and Fifty copies signed by the Artist, and numbered, of which this is No. 48. There are 28 tipped-in colour plates as called for. This is a lovely clean copy internally, except for browning to endpapers and page edges, and a 1917 presentation inscription (Prize for Music & Reading) to verso of limitation page. Fine ¶By 1910, Teddy Wharton's mental health was fast deteriorating, and his embezzlement of money from Edith's trust fund initiated the end of the Whartons' marriage, as well as Edith's American life. She leased an apartment on the Left Bank, in Paris, where she would remain until 1920. The Mount, her beloved Berkshires retreat, was sold in 1911, and "henceforth her life would be wholly a European one. . . It is somehow fitting that [Edith Frome], her frosty New England tragedy of a damaged New England farmer devastatingly crippled physically and emotionally by a disastrous love-affair, coincided with Wharton's own sundering of bonds to that same landscape and to a now-hopeless marriage which formally ended in 1913." (Literary Encyclopedia) "[I]t is surely among her best. When I think of it [Ethan Frome], I visualize a small painting, perfectly executed to the last detail." (Auchincloss) N. B.         The Principles of Scientific Management.

New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1911 - Octavo. Original red cloth, titles to spine and front board in gilt, publisher's device to front board in blind. Extremities a little rubbed, top corners of boards a little bumped, light ink stain to bottom corner of boards and text block, faint dampstaining to fore edge of front free endpaper and first 8 leaves. A very good copy. First trade edition, preceded only by the privately distributed edition in the same year. "F. W. Taylor, an engineer in the Bethlehem Steel Works in Philadelphia, was the originator of what he called 'scientific management', now known as 'time and motion study'. His system was based on what he estimated to be a fair day's work and the best means of ensuring such a standard of production. He was interested in any factor that hindered or helped in attaining this end, and besides studying factory conditions and methods in great detail he was responsible for fundamental changes in machinery and machine tools. The main lines of approach to increased efficiency were standardising processes and machines, time and motion study, and payment by results, all of which have been welcomed in the USSR, where 'Stakhanovism' is virtually 'Taylorism' renamed, and in Germany, where the Principles was translated and achieved a wide circulation (31,000 copies sold by 1922). The adoption of his methods there contributed notably to the speedy recovery of German production after the First World War. His methods were anathema to trade unionists almost everywhere else" (PMM). Downs, Books That Changed America, 17; Norman 2059; Printing and the Mind of Man 403. [Attributes: First Edition]

        The Thousand Secrets

London: Everett & Co., Ltd., 1911. First Edition. Very good antiquarian condition. 8vo. [6], 312 pp. On p. 3 an image of an EMOJI ingeniously composed on a typewriter. Original publisher's red cloth, on upper cover a color-printed illustration of a skull, a typewriter, and a creepy hand typing the same EMOJI. Binding recased new pastedowns and endpapers, some soiling on lower cover. Published more than a century ago, this serial-killer thriller must surely be the first EMOJI mystery: at each crime scene the murderer leaves a cryptic typewritten "Smiley Face." Questions remain: did the murderer bring his or her own typewriter to the scene of the crimes? Were potential murder victims excluded because they did not own a typewriter? The first chapter is entitled: "Taxi of Death." What's not to like? THE SETTING: London and Paris. THE PROTAGONIST: Dick Dauntsey of Her Majesty's Secret Service. THE PLOT: Detective Dauntsey must investigate a series of alarming typewritten notes, always accompanied by a typewritten EMOJI of a grinning face. In a first-person narrative (antedating Dashiell Hammett), Dauntsey relates a compelling story which immediately begins with the discovery of the corpse of Harold, 7th Baron Lilifford in in a taxi cab. We are drawn to the taxi by the screams of a young woman, Gerta Kramm (naturally she is strikingly beautiful), the daughter of an old recluse. Throughout the case Daunsey is guided and misguided by the grinning EMOJI notes, and it is through them that he meets "The Lady in Black." Of course he falls in love with Gerta, which naturally complicates everything; but in this regard the present mystery exceeds our expectations, namely that their alliance is so dangerous that it almost lead the British nation into war. As expected, Dauntsey's own death at the hands of a league of conspirators is narrowly averted. Can Dauntsey solve the mystery of the Thousand Secrets? Selborne's other novels " The House of the Siren" and "The Lady in Black " seem equally scarce, but "The Thousand Secrets" is very difficult to obtain in attractive state, as here. COMMENT: On the verso of the title-page is the publisher's statement that the book was copyrighted in America by Mitchell Kennerley in 1911. This information is correct, but it is noteworthy that the book was not published in this country until 1915; therefore this London edition is the first.

Paul Klee - Catalogue raisonné Alle 9 Bänder zum Sondersparpreis

NEUBUCH!!!

Original green cloth, spine and front board lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, blind-tooled fillet border to covers, gilt fillet to spine ends, gilt flower to front board. Anna Comtesse de Brémont's Armorial ownership bookplate to pastedown. Lightly bumped at corners, small stains to rear boards, edges lightly browned, contents clean throughout, a very good copy. Pencil portrait of Oscar Wilde to frontspiece. Tissue guard intact. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy inscribed by the author to Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree, one of the great figures of the English theatre, who became the most successful actor-manager of his time. Oscar Wilde said of Tree: "a charming fellow, and so clever: he models himself on me."; Anna de Brémont Comtesse was an old friend of Lady Wilde and claimed to share a "mysterious soul-sympathy" with Oscar. The inscription is dated "May 22nd 1911" and refers to Tree's position at His Majesty's Theatre, a managerial post he had maintained since 1897. The book also contains an inscription by the author referring to the fact that she reacquired the copy "at the sale of the library of Sir Herbert Tree in the autumn of 1921".         Renoir signed image of a seascape painting, certified by the Mayor of Cagnes-Sur-Mer where Renoir lived for the last 12 years of his life - from the archive of Renoir's art dealer and friend, Ambroise Vollard

Segovia, January 10, 1911. 7.25" x 10". "Photographic Image Signed ""Renoir"" on the photographic surface, black & white, 6.75"" x 5.75"", overall size, 7.25"" x 10"". Mounted on 9"" x 11.5"" art board. Fine condition. The photograph was originally part of the archive of art collector and dealer, Ambrose Vollard (1868-1939). The number ""983"" is in pencil at the upper edge of the mount, probably to identify the location of his origibal painting. In order to avoid any future disputes regarding the authenticity of works by artists Vollard represented, he had all the original paintings photographed, then asked the artist to sign each photo, and had the signature witnessed. The purple stamping beneath Renoir'`s signature is in French with the artist's name and date witnessed in manuscript: ""Seen in order to authenticate / the signature of / Pierre Auguste Renoir, artist painter / above affixed / Cagnes the 10 January 1911."" Signed by the Mayor of Cagnes-Sur-Mer to the right of his official circular stamping in French: ""Cagnes / Alpes Maritimes"" with ""Mayor"" inside of a laurel."
