Acquaintances, Old and New, Among Reformers

[Milwaukee]: [S.E. Tate Printing Company], 1911. First edition. Original gray-blue publisher's cloth binding, with title and author embossed in gilt on front cover. Gentle bumps to corners; mild shelf wear to crown and foot of spine. Text block tight and unmarked, with the exception of pencil underlining on pages 20 and 29. Inscribed on the front free endpaper by the author: "Mrs. Adelaide Johnson with the love and admiration of Olympia Brown, 941 Seake Ave Racine Wis. Xmas 1913." This rare book last appeared at auction 37 years ago and sold unsigned, making this Near Fine association copy connecting two important leaders of the women's movement an exceptional piece. In this book, Brown documents a lifetime of intersectional activism that began with the influence of her mother, carried her through a college degree at Antioch College, and resulted in her leadership in both the American Equal Rights Association and the women's suffrage movement. With a firm belief that the fight for women's suffrage opened the door to a wider range of racial, economic, and social reform, Brown campaigned alongside such luminaries as Susan B. Anthony, Lucy Stone, and Alice Paul, Brown; and she dedicated her book "To the Woman Suffrage cause, which has inspired the noblest reformers of the last half-century." Adelaide Johnson, to whom Brown presents her book, was no less influential. An exhibitor at the groundbreaking 1893 World's Columbian Exposition, she promoted women's rights by presenting busts of Susan B. Anthony and Lucretia Mott. Almost two decades later, in the year after the 19th Amendment's passage, Johnson unveiled a monument that still remains in Washington, DC's Capitol rotunda: Portrait Monument to Lucretia Mott, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Susan B. Anthony. An exceptionally Fine book with an important and unique feminist association.

[title in Chinese characters, transliterated as] Fu min ce.

Shanghai: [in Chinese transliterated as:] Mei hua shu guan [i.e., American Presbyterian Mission Press], 1911. 8vo. (22 cm, 8.625"). [156] pp. Dr. W.E. Macklin and Yushu Li collaborated on several translations of works from English into Chinese, and George's Progress and Poverty was their most important. It is here in the third edition (as per note on the English title-page on the verso of the Chinese title-page); the first appeared in 1899 and the second in 1903.    Dr. Macklin (1860–1947) was a Canadian medical missionary of the Disciples of Christ Mission to China who operated a clinic and dispensary in Nanking beginning in 1886. He also established schools and translated, as noted previously, several works into Chinese.    Of this edition, WorldCat locates complete copies at three U.S. institutions (NYPL, Stanford, Johns Hopkins) and apparently partial copies at four others (University of Chicago, Princeton, Rutgers, UVa). Stapled in original red wrappers; spine and edges sunned, extremities rubbed, small inked numeral in one corner. Very good.

THE HAMPDENSHIRE WONDER. Signed By The Author

Sidgwick & Jackson, Ltd, London 1911 - This rarity of science fiction is signed by the author. One of the first novels to involve a Wunderkind. The child in it, Victor Stott, is the son of a famous cricket player. This origin is perhaps a reference to H.G. Well's father Joseph Wells. The novel concerns his progress from infant to almost preternaturally brilliant child. Victor Stott is subtly deformed to allow for his powerful brain. Bound in the preferred dark green boards with bold gilt spine lettering. Author's second novel. A very good plus to near fine book with the original dust jacket, also near fine with shallow chipping at spine crown. A very bright example of this rare jacket [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

[title in Chinese characters, transliterated as] Fu min ce.

[in Chinese transliterated as:] Mei hua shu guan [i.e., American Presbyterian Mission Press], 1911. Dr. W.E. Macklin and Yushu Li collaborated on several translations of works from English into Chinese, and George's Progress and Poverty was their most important. It is here in the third edition (as per note on the English title-page on the verso of the Chinese title-page); the first appeared in 1899 and the second in 1903. Dr. Macklin (1860-1947) was a Canadian medical missionary of the Disciples of Christ Mission to China who operated a clinic and dispensary in Nanking beginning in 1886.

        THE BATTLE OF SOULS ..

First edition. An antiwar, anti-Socialist future war novel that ends with a worldwide religious awakening and a Christian utopia. The Austro-Hungarian Empire invades England. This is among the best examples of the small group of pre-World War I supernatural future war novels. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 164. Not in Clarke (1978). Not in Bleiler (1948; 1978), Day (1963), or Reginald (1979; 1992). A fine copy. A very scarce book. (#156607)
