THE ISOLATION OF AN ION, A PRECISION MEASUREMENT OF ITS CHARGE, AND THE CORRECTION OF STOKES'S LAW In The Physical Review, Volume 32, Jan-June 1911, pp. 349-397.

Physical Review, Lancaster PA 1911 - Offered is a Very Good++ hardback ex-library Vol. 32 of The Physical Review in brown buckram binding with gilt lettering spine. Library bookplate front paste-down, ink stamp copyright page and last page, no other library marking. Page 636 notes that pages 636-644 were cut out when bound. Mild age darkening page edges. Sm. 4to. Millikan's first comprehensive account of his famous oil-droplet experiments, with which he established the electron as the fundamental unit of charge. By modifying Wilson's cloud-chamber technique and substituting oil for water. Millikan was able to observe individual charged droplets of oil for hours at a time, measuring changes in their velocity and determining from his measurements that the electrical charge on any drop was always an integral multiple of e = 1.60 x 10-19 coulomb. Late in 1909 Millikan greatly improved the drop method by substituting oil for water. Because of the relatively low volatility of this liquid, he could measure the rise and fall of the drops for up to four and a half hours. Spraying the chamber with radium radiation, he could change the charge on a single drop at will. His overall results decisively confirmed the integral-multiple values of the total charge. As for the determination of e itself, Millikan found that Stoke's law was inadequate for his experimental circumstances because the size of the drops was comparable with the mean free path of the air. Using the so-called Stokes-Cunningham version of the law, which took this condition into account, by late 1910 he had computed a charge for e of 4, 891 x 10-10 e.s.u. (DSB Vol. 9 p. 396) The Nobel Prize in Physics 1923 was awarded to Robert A. Millikan "for his work on the elementary charge of electricity and on the photoelectric effect". [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        The Principles of Scientific Management

New York and London: Harper & Brothers,, 1911. This special Edition printed in February 1911 for Confidential Circulation among the Members of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers with the Compliments of the Author. Octavo (230 × 151 mm). Original green cloth, spine lettered gilt, front boards ruled in blind. Spine ends slightly frayed, tips worn, some pencilled markings and marginalia, First edition, first issue, printed for private distribution. Presentation copy inscribed on the front free endpaper: "Presented to Hugo Dreiner by the author." With a foreword not in the later published trade edition and with a slightly different introduction. F. W. Taylor, an engineer employed by the Bethlehem Steel Company, was the founder of "Scientific management" in industry. He laid down the main lines of approach to the problem of increased efficiency by standardizing processes and machines, regulating timing and movements, and systematizing "piece-work" or payment by results. The larger aims of establishing social justice and ending class conflict were not achieved but Taylor's system had a profound influence on modern management thought and his ideas were welcomed in Germany and Soviet Russia at the inception of their five-year plans.

        UNDER WESTERN EYES

1911. [inscribed to the family doctor] London: Methuen & Co., (1911). 32 pp ads dated Sept 1911. Original red cloth decorated in gilt. First Edition, which consisted of 2,250 domestic copies (plus 750 colonial). This is a tale of Russian revolutionaries, centered about the character Razumov (whose name was Conrad's working title of the book). Harper, which published the American edition, declined to handle the serialization "because their magazine circulated in Russia and they feared it would cause a breach in their good relations with that country" [Cagle].~This copy has the ads dated September -- some copies have August ads, but the book was not actually published until 5 October, so the ad date has little meaning. The volume is in near-fine condition, with scarcely any cover soil or wear, though as usual there is some fading of the red spine. Cagle A14a(1). Housed in a handsome morocco-backed slipcase with inner chemise.~Provenance: In addition to the discreet bookplate of the amazing Conrad collector Stanley J. Seeger, this is an inscribed presentation copy from Conrad, reading in his hand "To | R. D. Mackintosh | with great regard | from J. C.". As Conrad collectors know, the presentation copies signed only with initials were the copies he gave to his closest friends. The Scotsman R[obert]. D[unbar]. Mackintosh (1865-1934) was the Conrad family doctor, but he was also an amateur playwright and inventor. Because Conrad, his wife Jessie, and their son Borys had so many ailments over the years, Mackintosh became much more than "just the doctor." He greatly admired Conrad's work (meaning, he most certainly did read this copy), and in fact he provided Conrad with medical treatment free of charge -- certainly a big "lure" for Conrad, who was always short of cash.~Mackintosh's inventiveness included the Surrey Scientific Apparatus Company (wireless telegraph -- how could it fail?!), in which his friend Conrad invested; in return Mackintosh provided employment for, and generally kept an eye on, Conrad's difficult son Borys. By 1920, the failure of that company (and the failure of "Dr. Mac" and Borys to get along) drove a wedge between Mackintosh and Conrad for the remaining years of the latter's life -- such that the Conrads used a different doctor for his last few years.

On a method of making visible the paths of ionising particles through a gas With: On an expansion apparatus for making visible.

Dell Publishing 1911-1912, London - "The Most Original Apparatus in the Whole History of Physics" Wilson, Charles Thomson Rees (1869-1959). (1) On a method of making visible the paths of ionising particles through a gas. In: Proc. Roy. Soc., series A, 85 (1911): 285-88. Plate. (2) On an expansion apparatus for making visible the tracks of ionising particles in gases and some results obtained by its use. In: ibid. 87 (1912): 277-292. 4 plates on 2 leaves. Together two whole numbers, 8vo. London: Harrison & Sons, 1911-12. 255 x 179 mm. Orig. printed wrappers, very slightly worn, pencil notations on back wrappers. Fine copies. Boxed. First Editions. Wilson received a share of the 1927 Nobel Prize for physics for his invention of the cloud chamber, which makes visible the tracks of ionizing particles. Wilson's device, which Rutherford called "the most original apparatus in the whole history of physics" (quoted in Magill, p. 344) became standard equipment in physics laboratories, and made possible numerous important discoveries in the fields of particle and nuclear physics. "The phenomena discovered empirically by Wilson may, briefly, be explained as follows. When air saturated with water vapor is suddenly cooled by an adiabatic expansion, it becomes supersaturated. In this condition, condensation into droplets will occur, provided there are nuclei present. Dust particles allow drops to form immediately, so Wilson carefully eliminated all gross matter from his apparatus. Negative ions act as nuclei at an expansion ratio of 1.25 (fourfold supersaturation) and positive ions become nuclei at 1.31 (sixfold supersaturation)" (DSB). Wilson constructed his first cloud chamber in 1895, and in 1910 designed an improved model with better illumination which allowed results to be photographed. In March 1911 Wilson was able to observe the track of an alpha ray by condensing water drops onto the ions produced by its passage, describing his results in "On a method of making visible the paths of ionising particles through a gas" (no. 1 above). No. 2, Wilson's classic "On an expansion apparatus for making visible the tracks of ionising particles in gases and some results obtained by its use," published a little over a year later, contains "some of the best photographs of alpha-particle, beta-particle and X-ray tracks" (Magill, p. 343).
