The Personal History of David Copperfield

London - The Westminster Press, Ltd., 1911. London - The Westminster Press, Ltd., 1911 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. The Personal History of David Copperfield by Charles Dickens. Illustrated with twentytipped-in colourplatesby Frank Reynolds, R. I. andalso with illustrated endpapers. First edition thus. David Copperfield is the common name of the eighth novel by Charles Dickens, first published as a novel in 1850. Its full title is The Personal History, Adventures, Experience and Observation of David Copperfield the Younger of Blunderstone Rookery (Which He Never Meant to Publish on Any Account). Like most of his works, it originally appeared in serial form during the two preceding years. Many elements of the novel follow events in Dickens' own life, and it is probably the most autobiographical of his novels. Frank Reynolds (1876 - 1953) was a British artist. Reynolds had a drawing called A Provincial Theatre Company on Tour published in The Graphic on 30 November 1901. In 1906 he began contributing to Punch Magazine and was regularly published within its pages during World War I. He was well known for his many illustrations in several books by Charles Dickens, including David Copperfield (c1911), The Pickwick Papers (c1912) and The Old Curiosity Shop (c1913). He succeeded F. H. Townsend as the Art Editor for Punch. He was also a prolific watercolour painter and was a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours from 1903. Condition: In a decorative cloth binding. Externally, sound but with some wear to extremities and splitting to cloth to joints, mostly front, with backstrip lifting and the odd slight mark to boards. Rear hinge tender. Internally, generally firmly bound. Bright but with occaisonal scattered spotting and handling marks. Overall: GOOD ONLY.

Mr. Churchill on the Peers by Winston S. Churchill, first edition only printing, bound in Pamphlets & Leaflets for 1910, Being the Publications for the Year of the Liberal Publication Department

London: The Liberal Publication Department, 1911. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good. Contained in this bound volume is the first edition, only printing of this scarce Churchill speech pamphlet. In 1910 Winston Churchill was a young lion of the Liberal Party, vexing the British establishment and helping Lloyd George lay the foundations of the modern welfare state. Here is the original 1910 leaflet publishing Churchill's 14 November letter stating vehement opposition to the veto power of the House of Lords. This leaflet captures the young radical Churchill in full flower. "Was ever inequality more scandalous? Was ever injustice more glaring? All classes are to have votes; but only Tory votes are to count. WE CAN SUBMIT NO LONGER TO THIS USAGE. THIS IS OUR LAND AS MUCH AS IT IS THEIRS." The leaflet is two pages, published by the Liberal Publications Department as Leaflet No. 2358 on 18 November 1910. It is bound in a volume containing Liberal Party speeches and pamphlets for the year 1910. The binding is black leather pebble grain spine over green ribbed cloth covers, the book measures 8.25 inches tall by 5.5 inches wide by 1 inch thick. It contains a table of contents indexing by subject the numerous bound pamphlets and leaflets. The book is a fascinating piece of history, containing pamphlets and leaflets of various shapes and sizes, many of which are folded in and, we imagine, are unlikely to now be found anywhere else given their fragility and ephemeral nature. Condition of the bound volume is good overall - with a fair binding but fine contents. The contents, including the Churchill speech pamphlet, are in excellent condition - crisp, clean, bright, and tight. No spotting. Even the page edges are clean. A previous owner name is inked on the ffep and there is minor bookseller pencil notation on the front pastedown. The leather spine is still intact, but dry and fragile with losses at the spine ends and all along the front hinge. The green cloth boards show moderate scuffing. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A33.1, Woods A18.

        The Heptameron

London - Gibbings& Co., Limited, 1911. London - Gibbings& Co., Limited, 1911 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. An attractive set of The Heptameron by Margaret,Queenof Navarre, translated into English from the original French. Complete in five volumes. The translation is from the authentic text of M. le Roux de Lincy. Marguerite de Navarre (French: Marguerite d'Angoulme, Marguerite d'Alenon; 11 April 1492 21 December 1549), also known as Marguerite of Angoulme and Margaret of Navarre, was the wife of Henry II of Navarre. Her brother became King of France, as Francis I and the two siblings were responsible for the celebrated intellectual and cultural court and salons of their day in France. As an author and a patron of humanists and reformers, she was an outstanding figure of the French Renaissance. Samuel Putnam called her The First Modern Woman. The Heptameron is a collection of 72 short stories written in French and published posthumously in 1558. It has the form of a frame narrative and was inspired by The Decameron of Giovanni Boccaccio. It was originally intended to contain one hundred stories covering ten days just as The Decameron does, but at Marguerites death it was only completed as far as the second story of the eighth day. Many of the stories deal with love, lust, infidelity and other romantic and sexual matters. One was based on the life of Marguerite de La Rocque, a French noblewoman abandoned, as punishment, with her lover on an island off Quebec. The collection first appeared in print in 1558 under the title Histoires des amans fortunez edited by Pierre Boaistuau, who took considerable liberties with the original version, using only 67 of the stories, many in abbreviated form, and omitting much of the significant material between the stories. He also transposed stories and ignored their grouping into days as envisaged by the authoress. A second edition by Claude Gruget appeared only a year later in which the editor claimed to have restored the order previously confused in the first impression. Also the prologues and epilogues to each short story left out by Boaistuau were put back and the work was given, for the first time, the title Heptamron (from the Greek pt seven and a day) due to the seven-day time frame into which the first 70 short stories are grouped.         The Mahatma and the Hare

London, New York, Bombay and Calcutta - Longmans, Green and Co, 1911. London, New York, Bombay and Calcutta - Longmans, Green and Co, 1911 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A smart first edition of this highly sought after fictional work, The Mahatma and the Hare. Complete with twelve beautifully drawn plates by W. T. Horton and H. M. Brock. Sir Henry Rider Haggard was an English writer of adventure novels set in exotic locations, predominantly Africa, and a founder of the Lost World literary genre. He was also involved in agricultural reform around the British Empire. His stories, situated at the lighter end of Victorian literature, continue to be popular and influential. While his novels portray many of the stereotypes associated with colonialism, they are unusual for the degree of sympathy with which the native populations are portrayed. Africans often play heroic roles in the novels, although the protagonists are typically, though not invariably, European. Haggard's Lost World genre influenced popular American pulp writers such as Edgar Rice Burroughs, Robert E. Howard, Talbot Mundy, Philip Jos Farmer, and Abraham Merritt. Henry Matthew Brock was a British illustrator and landscape painter of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Other authors that he worked for include Charles Dickens, andArthur Conan Doyle. Condition: In original pictorial cloth binding. Externally, smart, with very light rubbing, and fading to the spine. Internally, firmly bound and bright, generally clean, with some light spotting to the text block edge and endpapers, not encroaching on text. Overall: VERY GOOD..

        PETER AND WENDY

Hodder and Stoughton 1911 - First edition. Green cloth with gilt lettering and decoration in pictorial dustwrapper stamped in gilt mirroring the design on the cloth. A fine copy, with cloth and gilt exceedingly bright and just a little foxing to the page edges. In a very good dustwrapper indeed, with the spine faded as usual and some wear to the head of the spine, but a very well preserved example. Pictorial title page and frontispiece, plus 11 black and white illustrations by F.D. Bedford. The character of Peter Pan is first encountered in 1902 as part of The Little White Bird, a novel for adults. The popularity of this small section prompted Barrie to develop it as a children's story (Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, published in 1906) and adapt it as a play (Peter Pan, which opened in 1904). The continued success of the play led Barrie to expand the story further as a novel (Peter and Wendy, 1911), which is the version best known today. This story tells the popular version of the tale featuring Wendy Darling and Nana the dog. The final chapter of this novel, entitled, "When Wendy Grew Up", sees Peter visiting a grown up Wendy, part of the story which had not appeared in the play or earlier versions of the story.
