        Peter and Wendy

London: Hodder and Stoughton,, [1911]. Octavo. Original green cloth, spine and front board lettered and decorated in gilt. With the dust jacket. 12 monochrome plates. Cloth a little darkened to the edges, upper tip of the front board slightly bumped; an excellent copy in the faded, ragged and partially defective jacket. First edition, first impression. The origins of Peter Pan as a literary character were somewhat protracted. Barrie had found fame as a writer of prose, initially with Scottish story-collections such as Auld Licht Idylls and A Window in Thrums, and then a sequence of novels that established him as a leading novelist of the 1890s. The character of Peter Pan first appeared as a book-within-a-book in his London story-collection The Little White Bird (1902), by which time Barrie was increasingly turning away from prose to concentrate on drama. His two plays of that year, Quality Street and The Admirable Crichton, were both successful but eclipsed by the enormous success of Peter Pan, which opened on 27 December 1904 and broke all previous theatrical records. In 1906 Barrie sanctioned the publication of Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, with the text extracted from The Little White Bird in which Peter is a seven-day-old infant, and illustrated by Arthur Rackham. Barrie reserved for himself the task of turning his theatrical success into a novel - Peter and Wendy. It tells the familiar story of the stage version, with Peter as an older child flying off with Wendy and the other Darling children to battle Captain Hook and his pirates, but Barrie added a final chapter to the book in which Peter returns for Wendy years later, when she is grown with a child of her own. The stage play itself was not published until 1928.

1911. Illustrated. New York: The Macmillan Company, 1911. 6 pp undated ads. Original blue-grey cloth with affixed front cover illustration. First Edition, which consisted of only 4,265 copies. Jack had planned for his and Charmian's voyage on this 45-foot ketch (costing him at least $30,000) to be a seven-year one -- but diseases (especially yaws) and financial crises reduced it to a two-year fiasco (1907-1909). Illustrated with his own photographs, this book is a compilation of the accounts he sent back to the magazine that had helped fund the boat's construction.~The foreword to his account of the voyage, THE CRUISE OF THE SNARK, was very revealing. "The ultimate word is I LIKE," he confessed. "It is I LIKE that makes the drunkard drunk and the martyr wear a hair shirt; that makes one man a reveler and another man an anchorite; that makes one man pursue fame, another gold, another love, and another God. Philosophy is very often a man's way of explaining his own I LIKE." Yet what of a man who wanted drink and revolution, revelry and intense study, fame, gold, love, and faith in mankind all at once, as Jack did? He could only try to do everything simultaneously, at the waste of his energy, at the eventual cost of his life. I LIKE is the cry of the child, not the voice of the grown man, which is I ACCEPT. [Sinclair]~As in all copies, the title leaf is a cancel. This is a fine, bright copy (one small edge-chip in the rear paste-down) of a book tough to find in this condition. Sisson & Martens p. 58; Blanck 11929.

WHEN GOD LAUGHS and Other Stories

1911. New York: The Macmillan Company, 1911. 4 pp undated ads. Original olive cloth decorated in light green and orange. First Edition of this collection of twelve short stories, illustrated with six plates. The edition consisted of 3,758 copies, a relatively small number for Macmillan's printings of London's works. Included is "The Apostate," which would subsequently be published separately by socialist presses. Two others, "Semper Idem" and "The 'Francis Spaight'," "were ghoulish in their lip-licking over throat cutting" [Sinclair]. This book was published during Jack's last period of relative happiness, while he and Charmian were ensconced as landowners on their "Beauty Ranch" -- after his return from the disastrous Snark voyage, and before his decision to construct the "Wolf House."~This is a bright copy of this attractively-bound book (a Decorative Designers production); it is in fine condition, essentially as new.         L'Allumage Moderne / Magneto Lavalette Eisemann

[Mabileau & Co.], Paris 1911 - Hand-coloured pochoir print. Very good condition. Modern lightning. The Gamy-Montaut prints document various historical events in the early history of motorized transportation, including Power Boat Racing, Motorcycle and Motor Car Racing, Motor Car Touring, Zeppelins and Airplanes. Having observed the rapidly growing interest in cars and racing during the early years of motor cars, Ernest Montaut ( 1879-1909) produced his first motoring prints in the mid-1890s, and by 1897, his drawings were pictorial records of the many races in France. Montaut's work was extremely well received in the Paris of his day and was shown in the fashionable shops of the Rue de l'Opera and Rue de la Paix, as well as in the better galleries. Marguerite M. Montaut, Ernest's wife, continued his work after his death producing not only racing prints but also developing a fine series of aviation prints commemorating such events as the first flights on the early European mail routes. While Marguerite Montaut's works were occasionally signed "M. Montaut", she usually used "Gamy", an anagram for Magy. The Gamy-Montaut prints were all produced by the pochoir process in which the outlines for each image were drawn onto lithographic stones and printed. Using these uncoloured prints as a template, elaborate stencils were cut for each colour. Water-colour was then brushed onto the image through the stencil. The colouring process was quite complex, with each print taking several days to produce. It was also quite labour intensive, and the studio of Gamy-Montaut therefore employed a group of trained artists, including Nevil and Campion, to assist in the colouring. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

1911. Illustrated by F. D. Bedford. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, n.d. [1911]. Original grey-green cloth pictorially decorated in gilt. First American Edition, published in the same month as Hodder & Stoughton's London edition. Peter Pan as a character first appeared in Barrie's THE LITTLE WHITE BIRD in 1902. In December 1904 his play "Peter Pan: or The Boy Who Would Not Grow Up" was first produced, but this play was not published as such until 1928. In 1911 Barrie wrote this narrative version of that play; thus this is the first edition of the famous tale that we associate today with Mary Martin and Walt Disney. It is a handsomely-bound book: Peter, two mermaids and the crocodile grace the front cover, while a brooding Captain Hook dominates the spine.~This copy is of the first issue, with "Published, October 1911" and the Scribner's slug on the copyright page. It is in fine condition, without wear -- the spine cloth slightly faded as usual for this color of cloth. Cutler 64.

He admired the Nürnberg pioneer of microscopy, Martin Frobenius Ledermüller (1719-1769), acquired microscopes from him and designed some of his own, developing a modular compound microscope that he presented in a 1762 publication.       1911. With Frontispiece. New York: The Macmillan Company, 1911. 8 pp undated ads. Original blue cloth pictorially decorated in green, black and white. First Edition, which consisted of only 4,974 copies. Jack wrote most of these tales toward the end of his Snark adventure, when he contracted numerous diseases and skin conditions ending in his hospitalization in Sydney...~Jack's rage at the useless torture of his flesh showed through the SOUTH SEA TALES, which he was writing at this time. In the most sadistic of these, "Mauki," an insane brute of a German torments the savage Mauki by burning him with the lighted end of his cigar, ripping open his pierced nose, and skinning patches off his neck with a rough mitten made from the hide of a sting ray. Mauki waits until the German is stricken with blackwater fever, skins him alive with the mitten, then beheads him. And in "The Inevitable White Man" and "Yah! Yah! Yah!," Jack's delight in the slaughter of the cannibals rises to an orgiastic frenzy. [Sinclair]~SOUTH SEA TALES, with its attractive pictorial binding (initialed "G.H."), is notoriously difficult to find in collectible condition, due to the tendency of its white cover pigment to flake off -- as evidenced by the copy photographed in S&M. This however is a bright copy, without any of that customary flaking -- fine except for slight lifting of the cloth alongside the front joint. Provenance: front and rear paste-down bookplates of the Jack London collection of the mining executive Willard S. Morse (1856-1935) who after retirement put together a significant collection of Western authors; later bookplate of L.H. Kauffman. Sisson & Martens p. 60; Blanck 11932.~.

1911 - London: Gall and Inglis, n.d. [1911]. Original green cloth with pictorial spine, with front cover illustration onlay. Second (and first one-volume) Edition of Henty's first book. Agnes Ashleigh is unexpectedly bequeathed a fortune -- but the two sisters of her benefactor have other ideas. A SEARCH FOR A SECRET was initially published by Tinsley in 1867 as a three-decker -- consisting of probably no more than 300 or 400 copies; that edition is now extremely scarce, one of the toughest of all Henty first editions to find. This one-volume edition did not appear until 44 years later, after Henty's death. This copy is in green cloth, as opposed to the red copy cited by Newbolt (we have also had blue); in this copy there is gilt on the top edge only (some have all edges gilt).~This is a bright, near-fine copy (endpapers cracked, 1915 Sunday School attendance prize bookplate) -- of a title we do not see very often.
