The Voyage of the 'Why Not?' In the Antarctic

London: Hodder and Stoughton, [1911]. London: Hodder and Stoughton,, [1911]. The Journal of the Second French South Polar Expedition, 1908-1910. English Version by Philip Walsh. Quarto (190 × 250 mm). Original green cloth, spine and front board lettered in gilt, image of penguin in white on spine, front board with gilt relief of the vessel and blindstamped border. Folding frontispiece, 42 pages of black and white photographic plates. Rear board a little scuffed, plate 2 detached, three minor dents to the edges of the front board, minor foxing to the contents. An excellent copy. First English edition, translated from Charcot's Autour du Pole Sud: expedition du Pourquoi-pas 1908-1910, published in 1910. This is the account of the exploration of the Bellingshausen and Amundsen Sea led by Dr Jean-Baptiste August Étienne Charcot (1867-1936), in his ship, the Pourquoi-pas?. Representing a "somewhat patrician caste of polar explorer" (Stam & Stam, 7.2), Charcot led the first French Antarctic expedition (1904-07), which reached Adelaide Island. Although the account of his first voyage was not translated into English, by 1911 with a dispute raging between Scott and Shackleton over the Nimrod Expedition, the publishers deemed public interest sufficient to commission this translation of Charcot's second expedition. During his expedition, Charcot had surveyed over 2000 km of previously unknown or partially known Antarctic coastline, and he returned 28 volumes of reports and 3000 photographs, together with his popular 1910 account. Howgego notes that "in the eyes of many contemporary historians, Charcot's contribution to Antarctic science outweighs all others." Though he would never return to the Antarctic, Charcot continued his explorations long after the Second World War, until the Pourquoi-pas? was finally wrecked off the coast of Iceland on September 16, 1936, resulting in the loss of Charcot and forty-two crew members, with only a single survivor. This is a fascinating account, richly illustrated with dramatic photographs from the expedition - perhaps "an unspoken apology for previous British indifference to France's efforts in the Antarctic" (Mackenzie, Milton and Kossow).

        The School for Scandal

London - Hodder ad Stoughton, 1911. London - Hodder ad Stoughton, 1911 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. An attractive copy of Sheridan's classic theatrical comedy, The School for Scandal. Lavishly illustrated throughout with numerous tipped-incoloured plates, and black-and-white illustration by Hugh Thomson. The School for Scandal has been widely admired. The English critic William Hazlitt was particularly effusive in his praise of Sheridan's comedies in general (everything in them tells; there is no labour in vain) and of this play in particular: The 'School for Scandal' is, if not the most original, perhaps the most finished and faultless comedy which we have. . . Besides the wit and ingenuity of this play, there is a genial spirit of frankness and generosity about it, that relieves the heart as well as clears the lungs. It professes a faith in the natural goodness as well as habitual depravity of human nature. Condition: In a decorative cloth binding. Externally smart, with some marks to the spine and some minor shelfwear only. Internally, firmly bound. Neat ink inscription dated 1942 to the recto of the front free-endpaper. Pages are very bright and clean, with just some foxing to the endpapers. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED..

Mit Autorenregister und umfangreicher Erklärung der Tafeln des Atlas. (siehe John Sinkankas "Gemology. ++ (He devoted much of his life to the study of the mineral resources of the Urals, Crimea, Caucasus and other areas of Russia. In 1908 Fersman worked in Victor Goldschmidt's laboratory at Heidelberg University, where he perfected his crystallographic and optical methods. He was commissioned by Goldschmidt to make a tour of the most important jewelers of western Europe and select the most interesting crystals of natural diamonds for study. In Frankfurt, Hanau, and Berlin tens of thousands of carats of diamonds were displayed before him on special tables. As a result of these observations Goldschmidt and Fersman wrote a joint monograph on the crystallography of the diamond (1911) that is still significant. It includes an historical review of earlier investigations and contains a massive bibliography of 402 references. The first part of the text treats general crystallography, the solubility of diamond, and its etch figures. The second part provides a historical review of previous investigations on the diamond. The last part is devoted to the morphology of crystals including diamond twins. The atlas of 43 plates contains 292 figures of crystals. The shaded crystal drawings are after actual stones. ** vortrefflich erhalten und frisch ! / Excellent condition ! ANY QUESTIONS ??       Washington - Government Printing Office, 1911. Washington - Government Printing Office, 1911 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. An investigation into the linguistics and dialects of the native Central Americans. Mesoamerican languages are the languages indigenous to the Mesoamerican cultural area, which covers southern Mexico, all of Guatemala and Belize and parts of Honduras and El Salvador. The languages of Mesoamerica belong to 6 major families Mayan, Oto-Mangue, MixeZoque, Totonacan, Uto-Aztecan and Chibchan languages (only on the southern border of the area) as well as a few smaller families and isolates P'urhpecha (Tarascan), Huave, Tequistlatec and Misumalpan.         Origins and History of Beer and Brewing, From Prehistoric Times to the Beginning of Brewing Science and Technology. A Critical Essay

Chicago: Alumni Association of the Wahl-Henius Institute of Fermentology, 1911. Chicago: Alumni Association of the Wahl-Henius Institute of Fermentology, 1911. Thick quarto, 411 pages. First edition, of this first major study of the history of beer and brewing in the United States, covering the period from 1630 up until publication. The boom in industrialization in the 19th century is particularly well represented. The U.S. Brewer's Association reprint uses the much shorter edition of 1933, and erroneously states that it was the first edition. Publisher's decorated cloth boards a bit dusty, otherwise a very good copy.

The Personal History of David Copperfield

London - The Westminster Press, Ltd., 1911. London - The Westminster Press, Ltd., 1911 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. The Personal History of David Copperfield by Charles Dickens. Illustrated with twentytipped-in colourplatesby Frank Reynolds, R. I. andalso with illustrated endpapers. First edition thus. David Copperfield is the common name of the eighth novel by Charles Dickens, first published as a novel in 1850. Its full title is The Personal History, Adventures, Experience and Observation of David Copperfield the Younger of Blunderstone Rookery (Which He Never Meant to Publish on Any Account). Like most of his works, it originally appeared in serial form during the two preceding years. Many elements of the novel follow events in Dickens' own life, and it is probably the most autobiographical of his novels. Frank Reynolds (1876 - 1953) was a British artist. Reynolds had a drawing called A Provincial Theatre Company on Tour published in The Graphic on 30 November 1901. In 1906 he began contributing to Punch Magazine and was regularly published within its pages during World War I. He was well known for his many illustrations in several books by Charles Dickens, including David Copperfield (c1911), The Pickwick Papers (c1912) and The Old Curiosity Shop (c1913). He succeeded F. H. Townsend as the Art Editor for Punch. He was also a prolific watercolour painter and was a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours from 1903. Condition: In a decorative cloth binding. Externally, sound but with some wear to extremities and splitting to cloth to joints, mostly front, with backstrip lifting and the odd slight mark to boards. Rear hinge tender. Internally, generally firmly bound. Bright but with occaisonal scattered spotting and handling marks. Overall: GOOD ONLY.

Mr. Churchill on the Peers by Winston S. Churchill, first edition only printing, bound in Pamphlets & Leaflets for 1910, Being the Publications for the Year of the Liberal Publication Department

London: The Liberal Publication Department, 1911. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good. Contained in this bound volume is the first edition, only printing of this scarce Churchill speech pamphlet. In 1910 Winston Churchill was a young lion of the Liberal Party, vexing the British establishment and helping Lloyd George lay the foundations of the modern welfare state. Here is the original 1910 leaflet publishing Churchill's 14 November letter stating vehement opposition to the veto power of the House of Lords. This leaflet captures the young radical Churchill in full flower. "Was ever inequality more scandalous? Was ever injustice more glaring? All classes are to have votes; but only Tory votes are to count. WE CAN SUBMIT NO LONGER TO THIS USAGE. THIS IS OUR LAND AS MUCH AS IT IS THEIRS." The leaflet is two pages, published by the Liberal Publications Department as Leaflet No. 2358 on 18 November 1910. It is bound in a volume containing Liberal Party speeches and pamphlets for the year 1910. The binding is black leather pebble grain spine over green ribbed cloth covers, the book measures 8.25 inches tall by 5.5 inches wide by 1 inch thick. It contains a table of contents indexing by subject the numerous bound pamphlets and leaflets. The book is a fascinating piece of history, containing pamphlets and leaflets of various shapes and sizes, many of which are folded in and, we imagine, are unlikely to now be found anywhere else given their fragility and ephemeral nature. Condition of the bound volume is good overall - with a fair binding but fine contents. The contents, including the Churchill speech pamphlet, are in excellent condition - crisp, clean, bright, and tight. No spotting. Even the page edges are clean. A previous owner name is inked on the ffep and there is minor bookseller pencil notation on the front pastedown. The leather spine is still intact, but dry and fragile with losses at the spine ends and all along the front hinge. The green cloth boards show moderate scuffing.
