Selected Plays. Illustrated by Herbert Tauss.

This limited edition of Selected Plays by Tennessee Williams has been privately printed, and individually signed by the author. Tennessee Williams (* 26. März 1911 in Columbus/USA - + 25. Behind Turkish Lattices. The Story of a Turkish Woman's Life.

Philadelphia, Lippincott, 1911. 8vo. Original green cloth, lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, illustrated in white and gilt; pp. ix, 179, frontispiece and numerous plates after photographs; minimal rubbing to cloth, text a little brown-spotted, otherwise very good. First edition of a scarce and important title. 'Hester Donaldson Jenkins (1869-1941), a professor at the American College for Girls in Constantinople from 1900-1909, wrote enthusiastically about the Young Turks, who in 1908 established a constitutional monarchy in the Ottoman Empire. They seemed to Jenkins to promise new freedoms for Ottoman women. In this book Jenkins uses her own observations of Constantinople, her students, and their families to construct an account of a typical Turkish Muslim womans life cycle at this turning point in Ottoman history. She intends her comments on childhood, education, marriage, polygamy, and divorce to correct Western misapprehensions and she notes how Ottoman women selectively adopted Western customs, such as European clothing, and increasingly practiced monogamy. Jenkins' corrective is only partial, however, for she describes Turkish women as childishly charming but sadly ignorant and in need of the uplifting influences of Western education. In its confidence in the bright prospects of American influence and Ottoman reform, this book captures an optimistic moment in which social progress seemed to prevail against the looming social and ethnic divisions of the Balkan and First World Wars' (blurb from a modern re-edition).

In Northern Mists. Arctic Exploration in Early Times. Translated by Arthur G. Chater.

London: William Heinemann, 1911 - 2 volumes, large octavo. Original grey-blue combed cloth, spines lettered in gilt, front boards with semi-circular gilt design of low sun over sea and mountains with approaching Viking longship, lettered in gilt, enclosed within concentric blind double panels. Volume I with very short nick at head of spine, corners very slightly bumped, top edge of volume II a little dusty, touch of foxing to fore-edges. An excellent copy. Tipped-in coloured frontispieces (with tissue guards), numerous illustrations and maps in the text; title pages printed in blue & black. First edition in English. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the half title of volume I: "To Mrs. G. Lewis from her friend Fridtjof Nansen, London Nov. 3rd. 1911"; volume II inscribed on the front free endpaper (in a secretarial hand): "For Mrs. George Lewis, in sincere friendship from the Publisher, 2. 09. 1911". A very appealing provenance that highlights a well-documented aspect of Nansen's character: the great Norwegian explorer cut a striking figure and enjoyed a reputation as a womaniser. Roland Huntford writes in his biography of Nansen that when in London: "[he] had at last moved out of his hotel into suitable rooms. They were modest enough, in a block of service flats at 36 Victoria Street, convenient for Parliament, Whitehall, the Foreign Office - and Buckingham Palace. The premises had been found by an admirer called Marie Lewis. She was the German-born daughter-in-law of Sir George Lewis, a famous criminal lawyer, who belonged to King Edward's raffish set, had infiltrated the underworld, had saved his Majesty himself from various scrapes, and was said to know enough to ruin half the Dukes and Duchesses of England. During the summer, Nansen had broken a genuine engagement with [Sir John] Scott Keltie, where he would have been introduced to Captain Scott, in order to go down and see Marie Lewis at the seaside resort of Sheringham [Norfolk] instead. 'I cannot blame you,' was Keltie's mild reproach. 'I think Sheringham is an excuse for committing any crime'. For her part, Mrs Lewis had reported to Nansen chattily after his departure: 'we have been bathing every day and of course my sister has missed you in the water and also for giving her the finishing touches with powder'". In Northern Mists is a handsomely produced book and was undertaken by Nansen at the request of the Royal Geographical Society: "this book owes its existence to a rash promise made some years ago to my friend [the geographer] Dr. J. Scott Keltie". It is an historical survey of the opening of the Arctic from classical antiquity to Cabot and the Portuguese discoveries in the north-west, and includes an account of the Viking discovery of America. There appear to have been two variants of the cloth binding: with the front cover lettered and panelled in black or - as here - lettered in gilt and panelled in blind; the latter could be classified the superior of the two. We have had another copy signed, to Sir Edward Grey (also dated 3 November 1911) in the same binding. In Northern Mists was originally published in Norwegian earlier the same year. A very smart copy with a piquant provenance. Arctic Bibliography 11993. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

A collection of his first editions in excellent condition.

London & Madras: various publishers, 1851-1911 - 30 works in 52 volumes, various formats. Original cloth, boards or wrappers. A full description is available on request. Generally in excellent condition, several items exceptional. Plates and maps throughout. A superb collection of first editions from the corpus of the great scholar-adventurer Richard F. Burton (1821-1890), generally in excellent condition throughout, including presentation copies of two his most sought-after titles, the Personal Narrative of a Pilgrimage to El-Medinah and Mecca (1855-6), and Unexplored Syria (1872), accompanied by a superb association copy of Two Trips to Gorilla Land (1876), and famous rarities such as the Guide Book, A Pictorial Pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina (1865), in the original wrappers, and a set of Kama Sutra of Vatsyayana (1883) in the original parts, which Penzer, as early as 1923, declared "practically unobtainable". The collection covers the entirety of Burton's career, from his early years as a soldier in the service of the East India Company to his renowned excursions in Africa and Arabia, and also includes excellent copies of his attractive Icelandic journal, Ultima Thule (1875) and The City of the Saints (1861), his noted account of a voyage from California to Salt Lake City. Many of the titles are in genuinely exceptional condition, coming from the celebrated travel libraries of Franklin Brooke-Hitching and Humphrey Winterton. These include superlative copies of Sindh (1851), his rare ethnographic study, and Zanzibar (1872), which Casada considered his most important African work. Other rarities demonstrate that Burton was far from being a doctrinaire soldier of empire, notably Stone Talk (1865), his brilliant critique of British imperialism printed in a run of 200 copies, of which most were destroyed by Lady Burton for fear of damage to her husband's reputation; finally, a copy of the extremely uncommon first edition, first issue of the Kasîdah (Couplets) of Hajî Abdû El-Yezdî (1880) underlines Burton's accomplishments as a student of Arabic and other eastern literatures. Together this collection underlines the judgement that "although Burton is most often thought of as a traveller, explorer, or linguist, he is probably best understood as a writer" (ODNB). All items are octavo unless stated. 1. Goa, and the Blue Mountains; Or, Six Months of Sick Leave. London: Richard Bentley, 1851. First (and only complete) edition of Burton's first book. Original tan cloth, pale markings and scattered light cockling to sides, remains an excellent, bright copy. Penzer pp. 37-8. 2. Scinde; Or, the Unhappy Valley. London: Richard Bentley, 1851. First edition. 2 vols, original green cloth. Bookplate of Viscount Birkenhead. Covers lightly rubbed, with a few pale marks. An excellent copy. Penzer pp. 39-40. 3. Scinde; Or, the Unhappy Valley. London: Richard Bentley, 1851. Second edition. 2 vols, original green wave-grain cloth. Pale marking to vol. 1 front board. An excellent, bright copy. Penzer pp. 39-40. 4. Sindh, and the Races that inhabit the Valley of the Indus; with Notices of the Topography and History of the Province. London: W. H. Allen, 1851. First edition, original vertical-ribbed orange-red cloth. "Very rare" (Penzer), a superlative copy from the collection of Franklin Brooke-Hitching. Penzer p. 40. 5.         Dormant

London: Methuen. London, Methuen, 1911. Second Edition. First Impression. A nice copy in the rare jacket, and bearing Nesbit's ex-libris plate to the front pastedown. One can perhaps assume then that the present copy was Nesbit's own copy, which she and those after her have kept in very good shape. Second edition indicated on the copyright page as November 1911. The jacket is largely complete with a little chipping and a few short tears, but remarkable given the age (and the fact it appears to have been unprotected). Book itself has a little spotting to the foreedge. A nice copy. One of three Nesbit books in Bleiler. Single leaf of ads laid in. [5754, Hyraxia Books]. . Near Fine. Hardback. Second Edition. 1911.

Bon exemplaire. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Mabileau & Co. Paris 1911 - Hand-coloured pochoir print. Image size (including text): 15 3/8 x 32 1/2 inches. Sheet size: 17 3/4 x 35 1/2 inches. The company of Delage was very successful. This design, with a 6,234 cc 130 bhp motor, won the 1914 Indianapolis 500, driven by Rene Thomas. Thomas' average speed was 82.47 miles per hour. The Gamy-Montaut prints document various historical events in the early history of motorized transportation, including Power Boat Racing, Motorcycle and Motor Car Racing, Motor Car Touring, Zeppelins and Airplanes. Having observed the rapidly growing interest in cars and racing during the early years of motor cars, Ernest Montaut ( 1879-1909) produced his first motoring prints in the mid-1890s, and by 1897, his drawings were pictorial records of the many races in France. Montaut's work was extremely well received in the Paris of his day and was shown in the fashionable shops of the Rue de l'Opera and Rue de la Paix, as well as in the better galleries. Marguerite M. Montaut, Ernest's wife, continued his work after his death producing not only racing prints but also developing a fine series of aviation prints commemorating such events as the first flights on the early European mail routes. While Marguerite Montaut's works were occasionally signed "M. Montaut", she usually used "Gamy", an anagram for Magy. The Gamy-Montaut prints were all produced by the pochoir process in which the outlines for each image were drawn onto lithographic stones and printed. Using these uncoloured prints as a template, elaborate stencils were cut for each colour. Water-colour was then brushed onto the image through the stencil. The colouring process was quite complex, with each print taking several days to produce. It was also quite labour intensive, and the studio of Gamy-Montaut therefore employed a group of trained artists, including Nevil and Campion, to assist in the colouring. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        The Fairy-Faith in Celtic Countries

London: Henry Frowde, Oxford University Press, 1911. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. 552 pp. First edition of the first book published by Walter Yeeling Evans-Wentz (1878-1965) who is best remembered for his studies on Tibetan Buddhism and the subsequent publication of "The Tibetan Book of the Dead" in 1927. Of German -Irish descent, Evans-Wentz studied religion, philosophy and history at Stanford University and was deeply influenced by visitors such as W.B. Yeats (who is one of the two dedicatees in this book). He then attended Oxford and studied Celtic Mythology and Folklore, performing ethnographic fieldwork collecting fairy folklore in Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Cornwall, Brittany, and the Isle of Man. In 1911 Evans-Wentz published his degree thesis as this book which has gone through numerous reprintings, at least as recently as 1977.***DESCRIPTION: Fully bound in evergreen ribbed cloth, gilt vignette to the front with various symbols contained within a wheel, including a shamrock, thistle and the Welsh dragon; the spine has a gilt vignette of the rising sun within Stonehenge and gilt lettering; top edge gilt; the front pastedown has the private library stamp of the Sufi temple from whom we acquired the book; frontispiece a vintage photograph of the stones of Carnac in 1909, title page in red and black, nine-page Index at the rear; octavo size (just over 8.5" tall), pagination: (i)-xxviii, (1)-524.***CONDITION: The book is now near fine; when acquired it had several condition issues which we had addressed by a professional restorer (name available upon request). The volume has a strong, square text block, solid hinges, perfectly straight corners with no rubbing, and the interior is clean and bright; the gilt design on the front cover was bright and unrubbed when we acquired the book and remains lovely; the gilt on the spine was nearly as bright, alas, there was a chip at the head of the spine which our restorer replaced to protect the text block, but the very top edge of the first word ("The") of the title on the spine was lost. Remaining condition issues are a few stray marks to the binding and some private library markings (stamped and hand-written) on the front and rear pastedowns, and one number on the front free endpaper (please see pictures and request more if needed); one can also just see where the necessary restoration work was done to the spine, joints, and edges.***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please contact us for details.***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
