Ein neues Laboratorium zur Erforschung der bedingten Reflexe. Offprint

1911. Pavlov, Ivan Petrovich (1849-1936). Ein neues Laboratorium zur Erforschung der bedingten Reflexe. Offprint from Ergebnisse der Physiologie 11 (1911). 8vo. 357-371pp. 250 x 168 mm. Original printed wrappers, creased vertically, holes punched in left margin. Inscribed by Pavlov to physiologist Ernest Henry Starling (1866-1927) as follows: “Dem Prof. E. H. Starling mit vielen Grüssen vom Verfasser.” First Edition Offprint Issue. Pavlov received the 1904 Nobel Prize in physiology / medicine for his studies of the physiology of digestion, which revealed the part that the nervous system plays in controlling digestive secretions. In conducting his physiological researches, Pavlov introduced the method of long-term or continuous experimentation, which—in contrast with traditional vivisectional methods—allowed him to study the operation of physiological processes in healthy animals under normal conditions over extended periods of time. His investigations of the nervous system’s role in digestion led him to explore the phenomenon of “psychic” stimulation; i.e., salivary secretion prompted by the sight or smell of food rather than by direct contact. In Pavlov’s hands this became a powerful tool for investigating the functions of the cerebral cortex and the physiology of behavior. The most famous outcome of his researches is, of course, the artificial conditioned reflex, in which physiological processes such as salivation are arbitrarily associated with stimuli such as the ringing of a bell.Pavlov presented this offprint, discussing a new laboratory for studying conditioned reflexes, to the British physiologist Ernest Henry Starling, co-discoverer (with Bayliss) of pancreatic secretin (1902; see Garrison-Morton 1024) and co-developer (again with Bayliss) of the theory of hormonal control of internal secretion (1905; see Garrison-Morton 1122). Pavlov had been a strong advocate of the “nervist” doctrine of physiology, which held that the nervous system controlled most body activities; however, Starling and Bayliss’s discovery of secretin, which confirmed the humoral (rather than nervous) transmission of impulses from the intestine to the pancreas, forced Pavlov to rework his theories of digestion (see Babkin, Pavlov, pp. 228-230).         Report on Foreign Manoeuvres. 1910. [Together with;] Report on Changes in Foreign Armies during 1910.

London: Prepared by the General Staff, War Office, 1911 - 2 volumes octavo. The first red morocco-grained cloth on stiff card boards, title gilt to the spine and upper board; the second red cloth-backed printed printed paper-covered boards, title gilt to the spine. A little rubbed, ink stamps of the Royal Army Medical College library to the front endpapers and title pages, in the second the front hinge is cracked to the straps but holding, overall very good. Illustrations to the text, some half-tones. First, and only, editions of these extremely uncommon reports "For Official Use Only", only 750 copies of the first and 450 of the second, but just a single copy of the manoeuvres traced institutionally, at the Australian Defence Force Academy. IWM has a copy of the 1906 report on manoeuvres, and KCL, Australian War Memorial and the Australian National Library that of 1912, with the ADFA holding copies of the '07-08, '11 and '13 reports; KCL, Institute for Historical Research have copies of the 1905 Report on Changes , and AWM that for 1906. Largely the work of military attachés who were "directly and intimately involved in obtaining information about their host nations" (Seligmann, Spies in Uniform, p219), these works contained careful observations from the yearly manoeuvres in most of the major European nations - those of Germany and Austro-Hungary in considerable detail - together with Japan, Turkey and the USA, and "a compendium of recent developments that had taken place in the thought, equipment and training of the world's major land forces" (p217). Material of this kind is rarely encountered, and offers a professional view of the rapid military developments occurring on the eve of the First World War.

        The Phantom of the Opera

New York: Bobbs-Merrill. (1911). First. First American edition. Color frontispiece and four striking two-page color illustrations by Andre Castaigne as issued. Contemporary owner name on the front fly, bottom corners a trifle bumped, near fine in a very good example of the exceptionally rare dustwrapper. The jacket has some professional internal repair, and some modest chipping at the spine ends that continues a bit onto the rear panel near the crown. The jacket art repeats the striking Castaigne image of the Phantom descending the staircase of the Paris Opera House, and wraps around onto the spine, and is overprinted in embossed gold. From an older private collection, this was long thought to be the only known jacketed copy (we remember when it last appeared in a catalogue about 20 years ago), but our research has identified two other jacketed copies. One is a variant design with identical text, type, and $1.25 price, but utilizing a different image from the book, while the third known surviving example is the same design as this copy but with significantly more chipping. Housed in a custom cloth clamshell case. Filmed several times, most indelibly with Lon Chaney as the vengeful composer, and in recent decades transformed into a successful musical play, and a less successful musical film. Some modest flaws, but try to find another. A true rarity, and perhaps the only jacketed copy that will ever appear on the market. .

Watercolour View of the Fraser River in British Columbia]: Fraser River Cañon, near Yale, B.C., 1911.

1911 - Yale B.C., 1911. Ca. 31,5x48 cm (12 ¼ x 19 in). Signed "Arthur Law" in the left lower corner. Later matting with hand drawn borders and manuscript caption. The watercolour is in near fine condition. A very beautifully and skilfully executed watercolour of Fraser Canyon near Yale during most likely an Indian summer evening in 1911. "Yale is on the Fraser River and is generally considered to be on the dividing line between the Coast and the Interior. Immediately north of the village the Fraser Canyon begins, and the river is generally considered un-navigable past this point, although rough water is common on the Fraser anywhere upstream from Chilliwack, and even more so above Hope, about 20 miles south of Yale. But steamers could make it to Yale, good pilots and water conditions permitting, and the town had a busy dockside life as well as a variety of bars, restaurants, hotels, saloons and various services. Its maximum population during the gold rush was in the 15,000 range, although typically it housed 5-8,000. The higher figure relates to the evacuation of the Canyon during the Fraser Canyon War of 1858" (Wikipedia).

London / Philadelphia: William Heinemann / J.B. Lippincott Co., 1911. - "One of the Most Sumptuous Gift Volumes of the YearThe Cover Design is a Thing of Beauty"[ROBINSON, Charles]. SHELLEY, Percy Bysshe. The Sensitive Plant. Introduction by Edmund Gosse. Illustrations by Charles Robinson. London / Philadelphia: William Heinemann / J.B. Lippincott Co., 1911. First U.K. Robinson-illustrated edition, a Heinemann "Xmas Art Book" that originally sold for 15 shillings. Quarto (10 3/8 x 7 1/2 in; 264 x 190 mm). xii, [4], 17-127, [1] pp. Eighteen full color tipped-in plates, including frontispiece, with captioned tissue guards. Small color, halftone, or black and white (some full page) illustrations to each page. Publisher's original pictorial green cloth lavishly gilt-stamped. Top edge gilt. Illustrated endpapers. In the scarce original dust jacket with chip at spine head and upper edge of rear panel. A tight, bright, and fine copy of this generously produced volume."No more tastefully illustrated book of verse could be desired than the elaborately artistic edition of Shelley's " Sensitive Plant,"edited by Mr. Edmund Gosse, illustrated with much richness of coloring and gracefulness of design by Mr. Charles Robinson, and imported by the Lippincott Co. Mr. Gosse's introduction throws new light on the " Lady, the wonder of her kind," who played the part of "an Eve in this Eden " where grew the sensitive plant. Drawing upon Medwin's notes to a never-published second edition of his life of the poet, he tells us that this paragon of her sex was a certain Countess of Mountcashell, an Irish lady about fifty years of age, of sufficient unconventionality to be welcomed by Shelley and his company as a congenial spirit. The notes on this lady and the editor's gleaning of facts concerning the mimosa pudica, or sensitive plant, celebrated bythe poet, are interesting. The illustrations, large and small, accompanying the slender thread of text, form the conspicuous feature of the book, and make it one of the most sumptuous gift volumes of the year. The cover design is a thing of beauty."(The Dial, December 1911). "This book. with. supplements in colour in addition to page designs by the artist is sumptuous in effect" (The International Studio, January 1912). [Attributes: First Edition]

Shaw writes to Dublin-born actress Lucy Carr Shaw: "All this rigmarole about Peter being in my debt is rubbish, as she very well knows . as to investing in geniuses, I shall make my own selection if I ever go into that department of finance. Middle-aged ex- bandsmen, as I vaguely gather W.B. to be, are not in my line: I should prefer at least vivandière . She is quite right to adopt an orphan; but he will have to run away if he is really a genius: her first commandment is 'Thou shall have no other goddess but me'; and a public artist must belong to everybody.         La Chartreuse de Parme

Paris - A. Ferroud. 1911 - An attractive copy ofLa Chartreuse de Parme, Stendhal's seminal novel. While in some respects it is a 'romantic thriller', interwoven with intrigue and adventures, the novel is also an exploration of human nature and psychology and court politics. The novel is cited as an early example of realism, a stark contrast to the Romantic style popular while Stendhal was writing. It is considered by many authors to be a truly seminal work; Honor de Balzac considered it the most significant novel of his time,Tolstoy was heavily influenced by Stendhal's treatment of the Battle of Waterloo and his own version of the Battle of Borodino is a central part of his novel War and Peace. Number 966 of 1000 limited copies printed on Japanese paper. With coloured vignette title page to Volume I, as well as numerous other engraved plates throughout the volumes. Complete in four volumes. Condition: In decorative purple half-morocco bindings with slip case. Slip case has some rubbing, and two lower joints are starting. Volumes are externally smart, with some fading to the spines only. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean, with just the odd spot. Overall: NEAR FINE with a GOOD slip case. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Phillips, who had served as a medical officer on at least one polar expedition. An uncommon title, with a nice association. .

Government of Formosa, Report on the Control of the Aborigines in Formosa

Government of Japan, Taihoku, Formosa 1911 - Printed in Japan by the Toyo Printing Company, Tokyo, green blindstamped cloth with gilt lettering on the spine, 8vo (6 1/4 x 8 3/4 in. - 15.9 x 22.5 cm), text in English, 45 pages of text and tables, 3 maps and an additional 100 pages of black and white halftone plates. Japan gained control over Formosa (Taiwan) in 1895 as a result of the Japan-China war. A major undertaking by the Japanese government was to understand and exercise authority over the nine "aboriginal" groups or tribes inhabiting the island of Formosa. This report documents that activity. The major aboriginal groupings/tribes were the Tiayal, Saisett, Ami, Bunun, Tsuou, Piyuma, Tsarisen, Paiwan and Yami. Early in the book there is a nine color coded map which shows the distribution of these nine tribes/groups. ~ Condition. The book is in Good+ condition. The boards have some rubbed areas and spots where there is light puckering under the cloth. There is some looseness in the signatures at the middle but the hinges are solid and binding strong. All plates, maps and tables are present. The maps are in near fine condition with no tears or staining. On a free front paper is tipped in a card reading "With the Compliments of Rimpie Otsu, Superintendent, Bureau of Aboriginal Affairs, Government of Formosa, Taihoku, Formosa." ~~ More information, to include digital pics, available on request.
