L'Allumage Moderne / Magneto Lavalette Eisemann

[Mabileau & Co.], Paris 1911 - Hand-coloured pochoir print. Very good condition. Modern lightning. The Gamy-Montaut prints document various historical events in the early history of motorized transportation, including Power Boat Racing, Motorcycle and Motor Car Racing, Motor Car Touring, Zeppelins and Airplanes. Having observed the rapidly growing interest in cars and racing during the early years of motor cars, Ernest Montaut ( 1879-1909) produced his first motoring prints in the mid-1890s, and by 1897, his drawings were pictorial records of the many races in France. Montaut's work was extremely well received in the Paris of his day and was shown in the fashionable shops of the Rue de l'Opera and Rue de la Paix, as well as in the better galleries. Marguerite M. Montaut, Ernest's wife, continued his work after his death producing not only racing prints but also developing a fine series of aviation prints commemorating such events as the first flights on the early European mail routes. While Marguerite Montaut's works were occasionally signed "M. Montaut", she usually used "Gamy", an anagram for Magy. The Gamy-Montaut prints were all produced by the pochoir process in which the outlines for each image were drawn onto lithographic stones and printed. Using these uncoloured prints as a template, elaborate stencils were cut for each colour. Water-colour was then brushed onto the image through the stencil. The colouring process was quite complex, with each print taking several days to produce. It was also quite labour intensive, and the studio of Gamy-Montaut therefore employed a group of trained artists, including Nevil and Campion, to assist in the colouring. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

1911. Illustrated by F. D. Bedford. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, n.d. [1911]. Original grey-green cloth pictorially decorated in gilt. First American Edition, published in the same month as Hodder & Stoughton's London edition. Peter Pan as a character first appeared in Barrie's THE LITTLE WHITE BIRD in 1902. In December 1904 his play "Peter Pan: or The Boy Who Would Not Grow Up" was first produced, but this play was not published as such until 1928. In 1911 Barrie wrote this narrative version of that play; thus this is the first edition of the famous tale that we associate today with Mary Martin and Walt Disney. It is a handsomely-bound book: Peter, two mermaids and the crocodile grace the front cover, while a brooding Captain Hook dominates the spine.~This copy is of the first issue, with "Published, October 1911" and the Scribner's slug on the copyright page. It is in fine condition, without wear -- the spine cloth slightly faded as usual for this color of cloth. Cutler 64.

Born in Bayreuth in Bavaria to a noble family, Rußworm became stablemaster to Karl Alexander, Margrave of Brandenburg. He admired the Nürnberg pioneer of microscopy, Martin Frobenius Ledermüller (1719-1769), acquired microscopes from him and designed some of his own, developing a modular compound microscope that he presented in a 1762 publication. He also developed stains to improve the visibility of biological specimens under the microscope.       1911. With Frontispiece. New York: The Macmillan Company, 1911. 8 pp undated ads. Original blue cloth pictorially decorated in green, black and white. First Edition, which consisted of only 4,974 copies. Jack wrote most of these tales toward the end of his Snark adventure, when he contracted numerous diseases and skin conditions ending in his hospitalization in Sydney...~Jack's rage at the useless torture of his flesh showed through the SOUTH SEA TALES, which he was writing at this time. In the most sadistic of these, "Mauki," an insane brute of a German torments the savage Mauki by burning him with the lighted end of his cigar, ripping open his pierced nose, and skinning patches off his neck with a rough mitten made from the hide of a sting ray. Mauki waits until the German is stricken with blackwater fever, skins him alive with the mitten, then beheads him. And in "The Inevitable White Man" and "Yah! Yah! Yah!," Jack's delight in the slaughter of the cannibals rises to an orgiastic frenzy. [Sinclair]~SOUTH SEA TALES, with its attractive pictorial binding (initialed "G.H."), is notoriously difficult to find in collectible condition, due to the tendency of its white cover pigment to flake off -- as evidenced by the copy photographed in S&M. This however is a bright copy, without any of that customary flaking -- fine except for slight lifting of the cloth alongside the front joint. Provenance: front and rear paste-down bookplates of the Jack London collection of the mining executive Willard S. Morse (1856-1935) who after retirement put together a significant collection of Western authors; later bookplate of L.H. Kauffman. Sisson & Martens p. 60; Blanck 11932.~.

1911 - London: Gall and Inglis, n.d. [1911]. Original green cloth with pictorial spine, with front cover illustration onlay. Second (and first one-volume) Edition of Henty's first book. Agnes Ashleigh is unexpectedly bequeathed a fortune -- but the two sisters of her benefactor have other ideas. A SEARCH FOR A SECRET was initially published by Tinsley in 1867 as a three-decker -- consisting of probably no more than 300 or 400 copies; that edition is now extremely scarce, one of the toughest of all Henty first editions to find. This one-volume edition did not appear until 44 years later, after Henty's death. This copy is in green cloth, as opposed to the red copy cited by Newbolt (we have also had blue); in this copy there is gilt on the top edge only (some have all edges gilt).~This is a bright, near-fine copy (endpapers cracked, 1915 Sunday School attendance prize bookplate) -- of a title we do not see very often.       Physical Review, Lancaster PA 1911 - Offered is a Very Good++ hardback ex-library Vol. 32 of The Physical Review in brown buckram binding with gilt lettering spine. Library bookplate front paste-down, ink stamp copyright page and last page, no other library marking. Page 636 notes that pages 636-644 were cut out when bound. Mild age darkening page edges. Sm. 4to. Millikan's first comprehensive account of his famous oil-droplet experiments, with which he established the electron as the fundamental unit of charge. By modifying Wilson's cloud-chamber technique and substituting oil for water. Millikan was able to observe individual charged droplets of oil for hours at a time, measuring changes in their velocity and determining from his measurements that the electrical charge on any drop was always an integral multiple of e = 1.60 x 10-19 coulomb. Late in 1909 Millikan greatly improved the drop method by substituting oil for water. Because of the relatively low volatility of this liquid, he could measure the rise and fall of the drops for up to four and a half hours. Spraying the chamber with radium radiation, he could change the charge on a single drop at will. His overall results decisively confirmed the integral-multiple values of the total charge. As for the determination of e itself, Millikan found that Stoke's law was inadequate for his experimental circumstances because the size of the drops was comparable with the mean free path of the air. Using the so-called Stokes-Cunningham version of the law, which took this condition into account, by late 1910 he had computed a charge for e of 4, 891 x 10-10 e.s.u. (DSB Vol. 9 p. 396) The Nobel Prize in Physics 1923 was awarded to Robert A. Millikan "for his work on the elementary charge of electricity and on the photoelectric effect". [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        The Principles of Scientific Management

New York and London: Harper & Brothers,, 1911. This special Edition printed in February 1911 for Confidential Circulation among the Members of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers with the Compliments of the Author. Octavo (230 × 151 mm). Original green cloth, spine lettered gilt, front boards ruled in blind. Spine ends slightly frayed, tips worn, some pencilled markings and marginalia, First edition, first issue, printed for private distribution. Presentation copy inscribed on the front free endpaper: "Presented to Hugo Dreiner by the author." With a foreword not in the later published trade edition and with a slightly different introduction. F. W. Taylor, an engineer employed by the Bethlehem Steel Company, was the founder of "Scientific management" in industry. He laid down the main lines of approach to the problem of increased efficiency by standardizing processes and machines, regulating timing and movements, and systematizing "piece-work" or payment by results. The larger aims of establishing social justice and ending class conflict were not achieved but Taylor's system had a profound influence on modern management thought and his ideas were welcomed in Germany and Soviet Russia at the inception of their five-year plans.

1911. [inscribed to the family doctor] London: Methuen & Co., (1911). 32 pp ads dated Sept 1911. Original red cloth decorated in gilt. First Edition, which consisted of 2,250 domestic copies (plus 750 colonial). This is a tale of Russian revolutionaries, centered about the character Razumov (whose name was Conrad's working title of the book). Harper, which published the American edition, declined to handle the serialization "because their magazine circulated in Russia and they feared it would cause a breach in their good relations with that country" [Cagle].~This copy has the ads dated September -- some copies have August ads, but the book was not actually published until 5 October, so the ad date has little meaning. The volume is in near-fine condition, with scarcely any cover soil or wear, though as usual there is some fading of the red spine. Cagle A14a(1). Housed in a handsome morocco-backed slipcase with inner chemise.~Provenance: In addition to the discreet bookplate of the amazing Conrad collector Stanley J. Seeger, this is an inscribed presentation copy from Conrad, reading in his hand "To | R. D. Mackintosh | with great regard | from J. C.". As Conrad collectors know, the presentation copies signed only with initials were the copies he gave to his closest friends. The Scotsman R[obert]. D[unbar]. Mackintosh (1865-1934) was the Conrad family doctor, but he was also an amateur playwright and inventor. Because Conrad, his wife Jessie, and their son Borys had so many ailments over the years, Mackintosh became much more than "just the doctor." He greatly admired Conrad's work (meaning, he most certainly did read this copy), and in fact he provided Conrad with medical treatment free of charge -- certainly a big "lure" for Conrad, who was always short of cash.~Mackintosh's inventiveness included the Surrey Scientific Apparatus Company (wireless telegraph -- how could it fail?!), in which his friend Conrad invested; in return Mackintosh provided employment for, and generally kept an eye on, Conrad's difficult son Borys. By 1920, the failure of that company (and the failure of "Dr. Mac" and Borys to get along) drove a wedge between Mackintosh and Conrad for the remaining years of the latter's life -- such that the Conrads used a different doctor for his last few years.
