Osiris and the Egyptian Resurrection ( 2 volumes ).

Medici Society, London 1911 - Hardcovers. Small 4to. Two volumes. xxxvi + 404pp & vii + 440pp. Original red cloth with decorations in blind, blind titling to upper board, gilt titling to spines. Color frontis in both vols., 4 photogravure plates and 2 folding plates to Volume I, numerous drawings in-text to both volumes. Budge's massive study of ancient Egyptian belief in the afterlife, and in particular the worship of Osiris. The First Edition was published by Philip Lee Warner under his own name, with an unspecified number of copies appearing under the 'Medici Society' imprint. The which was a sort of "book club" founded in 1908 by Warner and Eustace Gurney, with the express aim of making works of great artistic and literary importance available to a wider public by issuing them at as low a price a commercially feasible. As far as we can ascertain the two issues were issued more or less simultaneously in 1911, with the only differences being in binding, title page, and the color frontis (which in the Warner-imprinted issues are folding.) Spine ends bruised and a little rubbed with a few tiny tears at upper spines, corners lightly rubbed, page edges a little darkened with a few spots of foxing, early and later pages lightly and unevenly browned. Overall a tight, bright VG+ set. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Stories From Hans Andersen

London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1911. - One of 100 Copies Printed on Japanese Vellum Signed by Edmund DulacA Unique CopyIn a Handsome, Unrecorded Variant Binding[DULAC, Edmund, illustrator]. ANDERSEN, Hans [Christian]. Stories from Hans Andersen. With Illustrations by Edmund Dulac. London: Hodder & Stoughton, [1911].Edition de Luxe, limited to 100 numbered copies printed on Japanese Vellum and signed by the artist, this copy being no. 20. Large quarto (12 1/8 x 9 3/4 inches; 309 x 249 mm.). viii, 250, [2] pp. Mounted color frontispiece, with descriptive tissue guard printed in black, and twenty-seven mounted color plates (included in pagination). Plates framed with thick pale green line border and accompanied by guard leaves printed in pale green with stylized pineapples on the recto and border of snowflakes above descriptive caption on the verso. Text pages with pale green snowflake borders at top and bottom. All leaves framed with double pale green lines.Original dark chocolate brown pigskin pictorially stamped with three-peacock design and lettered in gilt on front cover and spine, with Hodder & Stoughton gilt-stamped at spine foot. Top edge gilt, others uncut. Endpapers printed in pale green with repeated design of stylized peacocks. A stunning copy, unique, and arguably the finest copy of the De Luxe Edition. The binding and endpapers do not conform to Hughey's description, and appear to be unique to this handsome copy. As she notes, the pigskin binding, ("brandy colour," not dark chocolate-brown, as here), should only have two thin gilt rules as frame, gilt lettering, date 1911 on spine, and white endpapers, not illustrated as here and in the trade edition. We contacted her for insight. Having seen only two copies of the Edition De Luxe, William Randolph Hearst's and another viewed at a Washington book fair, she reports:"So, where does your copy fit in? And when was it bound? I tend to think it was done close to original printing time, November 1911. There were a lot of oddball copies done then. The title was sold very quickly - all sold by December 1911. The fact that your endpapers are paper available at the time [to the trade edition] tends to date it.It is possible that someone or firm had this done for your copy #20. Your copy's binding design on front cover is clearly an adaptation of the endpapers but I do not think by Dulac as it does not appear in any of his other editions of Hans Andersen's work. Someone may not have liked the plain cover."If that's the case, we'd like to thank them. This special copy is the better for it.Hughey 27.

BASILE, Giambatista. Stories From the Pentamerone. Selected and Edited by E.F. Strange. Illustrated by Warwick Goble. London: Macmillan and Co., 1911. Edition de Luxe, limited to 150 copies. In the incredibly scarce dust jacket and with vellum unusually clean and bright this copy is, without question, the finest copy we have ever seen and the only one in the original printed dust jacket."Goble was strongly influenced by Japanese art and by Chinese paintings, his colour washes are extremely subtle and stroked on with the brush, his compositions consciously oriental, He worked almost entirely for publishers like Messrs. Black and Messrs Macmillan who were specializing in colour plate books" (Houfe, p.318).Manney Sale, Sotheby's October 11, 1991, lot 150. [Attributes: First Edition]

Sport on the Setit. The Narrative of a Sporting Trip along the Rivers Atbara and Setit

Canterbury, UK: Cross & Jackman, 1911, 1st edition - Crown 8vo. With a rifle borrowed from Powell-Cotton, the author journeyed along the banks of the Sudan’s Atbara and Setit rivers. Cobb and his hunting partner bagged an elephant as well as trophy waterbuck, roan and greater kudu. A most difficult little book to find, probably due to a small printing run by its Canterbury publisher [Czech, African Big Game, 2011, p. 64]. Original slate blue cloth with gilt titles, spine lightly darkened but titles very legible. Light soiling to fore edge. Tiny wear spot to edge of rear board. A little light foxing to prelims. Illustrated with photo plates. A very good+, tight copy of a very scarce work. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Faras-Nama-E Rangin or The Book Of The Horse

Bernard Quaritch, London 1911 - Solid copy in olive cloth boards, frt bd ruled in gilt with ornate blindstamped image of man riding a very ornately dressed horse, holding a falcon on his right arm. The gilt title on spine is legible, but barely: An Urdu Treatise on the Horse imprinted at the head, Translated by D. C. Philllott in center of backstrip and 1911 in gilt at foot. TEG, others trimmed. Cloth mottled and discolored on periphery, concentrating at the foot of spine. 1/2 in tear in cloth at frt and rear gutter, with cloth pulled and frayed only at head of spine. Bd tips bumped with rub at frt bd fore edge, others showing color loss but no rub through. Book now sleeved in heavy archival, removable mylar. All in all a very presentable copy of a very rare treatise on horsemanship dating back to 1200 BC. Endpps age toned, vintage Oxford bookstore sticker on frt pastdn. Provenance of this volume is from the library of Dr. William Lay, former MFH of the Oakbrook Hounds, IL. and bears his name/addy stamp on both endpps and pastdns, and one personal stamp on the lower margin of one inner page affecting no type. Frt hinge fine, rear inner hinge paper has a 2 in. crack in the center of the page, but all pages holding fine. Only the tissue guard on the frontis is half detached, plate is secure and going nowhere. 19 pg intro followed by 83 pgs of text. Frontis glossy plate and two line drawings in the text. Translated from the Urdu by Lieut.-Colonel D. C. Phillott, F.A.S.B. Secretary and Members Board of Examiners Calcutta; Fellow of the Calcutta University; Editor of the Faras-Nama of Hashimi, etc. Translator has dedicated this book to The Lord St. Davids In Memory of Bygone Days (as printed, not handwritten). Book was printed for Bernard Quaritch, 11 Grafton St, London by Norman and Son, Floral Street, Covent Garden London and bears a lovely acorn/oak leaf BQ crest on last page. From the translators intro: No Eastern treatise on the horse would be complete without a reference to some of the traditions regarding its origin. The present treatise, written by an Indian Muslim, deals with the Indian horse chiefly from a Muslim point of view. But, before giving an account of the Muslim traditions regarding the horse, I am tempted to say something gathered from Hindu writings. Phillpott then goes on in his 19 pg intro to discuss the very particular details of what a quality horse should look & behave like. He also shares the Hindu mythology of the four origins, castes or types of horses. By Hindus, horses are divided into four great castes: Brahman, Kshatriya, Vaishya, and Shudra. The horse that buries its muzzle up to the eyes when drinking is a Brahman; that which paws the ground while drinking is a Kshatriya; that which sucks in the water is a Vaishya; and that which shies at water and backs from it is a Shudra. The Brahman horse is brave in battle; the Kshatriya horse, even if it breaks down by riding, bears its master to the end of the stage; the Vaishya horse gallops and shies; the Shudra horse is a coward in war, throws its master in fight, and flees away, terrified. Just a brief sample of the fascinating reading within. Chapters include: Intro/ Reason for Writing The Book/ On the Points (WASF) of Horses/ On "Feathers"/ Traditional Defects/ On Spavin, Etc/ Eyesores and Defects/ On the Colours and Marks in Horses/ The Five Common Defects/ On the Best Breeding Districts (KHET) in India/ To Ascertain the Age of a Horse/ On the Treatment of Diseases/ The Treatment of the Foal/ On the Eight Forms of Colic (Kurkuri) and their Treatment/ Tetanus (Chandni-zada, adj., and Chandni, subs.)/ Chest-Founder (Chhati-band or Sina-band, adj.)/ Canker of the Foot/ Miscellaneous (4 chapters)/ On Ratib, Halwa and Khir/ Conclusion/ Appendix A: Signs Language and Jargon/ Appendix B: Miscellaneous Notes and Receipts from Various Indian Sources/ Appendix C: Vocabulary of Technical Terms.         Lettre autographe signee.

Honfleur, 10.

        Peter and Wendy

London: Hodder and Stoughton,, [1911]. Octavo. Original green cloth, spine and front board lettered and decorated in gilt. With the dust jacket. 12 monochrome plates. Cloth a little darkened to the edges, upper tip of the front board slightly bumped; an excellent copy in the faded, ragged and partially defective jacket. First edition, first impression. The origins of Peter Pan as a literary character were somewhat protracted. Barrie had found fame as a writer of prose, initially with Scottish story-collections such as Auld Licht Idylls and A Window in Thrums, and then a sequence of novels that established him as a leading novelist of the 1890s. The character of Peter Pan first appeared as a book-within-a-book in his London story-collection The Little White Bird (1902), by which time Barrie was increasingly turning away from prose to concentrate on drama. His two plays of that year, Quality Street and The Admirable Crichton, were both successful but eclipsed by the enormous success of Peter Pan, which opened on 27 December 1904 and broke all previous theatrical records. In 1906 Barrie sanctioned the publication of Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, with the text extracted from The Little White Bird in which Peter is a seven-day-old infant, and illustrated by Arthur Rackham. Barrie reserved for himself the task of turning his theatrical success into a novel - Peter and Wendy. It tells the familiar story of the stage version, with Peter as an older child flying off with Wendy and the other Darling children to battle Captain Hook and his pirates, but Barrie added a final chapter to the book in which Peter returns for Wendy years later, when she is grown with a child of her own. The stage play itself was not published until 1928.

        THE CRUISE OF THE SNARK

1911. Illustrated. New York: The Macmillan Company, 1911. 6 pp undated ads. Original blue-grey cloth with affixed front cover illustration. First Edition, which consisted of only 4,265 copies. Jack had planned for his and Charmian's voyage on this 45-foot ketch (costing him at least $30,000) to be a seven-year one -- but diseases (especially yaws) and financial crises reduced it to a two-year fiasco (1907-1909). Illustrated with his own photographs, this book is a compilation of the accounts he sent back to the magazine that had helped fund the boat's construction.~The foreword to his account of the voyage, THE CRUISE OF THE SNARK, was very revealing. "The ultimate word is I LIKE," he confessed. "It is I LIKE that makes the drunkard drunk and the martyr wear a hair shirt; that makes one man a reveler and another man an anchorite; that makes one man pursue fame, another gold, another love, and another God. Philosophy is very often a man's way of explaining his own I LIKE." Yet what of a man who wanted drink and revolution, revelry and intense study, fame, gold, love, and faith in mankind all at once, as Jack did? He could only try to do everything simultaneously, at the waste of his energy, at the eventual cost of his life. I LIKE is the cry of the child, not the voice of the grown man, which is I ACCEPT. [Sinclair]~As in all copies, the title leaf is a cancel. This is a fine, bright copy (one small edge-chip in the rear paste-down) of a book tough to find in this condition. Sisson & Martens p. 58; Blanck 11929.

WHEN GOD LAUGHS and Other Stories

1911. New York: The Macmillan Company, 1911. 4 pp undated ads. Original olive cloth decorated in light green and orange. First Edition of this collection of twelve short stories, illustrated with six plates. The edition consisted of 3,758 copies, a relatively small number for Macmillan's printings of London's works. Included is "The Apostate," which would subsequently be published separately by socialist presses. Two others, "Semper Idem" and "The 'Francis Spaight'," "were ghoulish in their lip-licking over throat cutting" [Sinclair]. This book was published during Jack's last period of relative happiness, while he and Charmian were ensconced as landowners on their "Beauty Ranch" -- after his return from the disastrous Snark voyage, and before his decision to construct the "Wolf House."~This is a bright copy of this attractively-bound book (a Decorative Designers production); it is in fine condition, essentially as new. Sisson & Martens p. 52; Blanck 11926.
