        Harmonielehre (First Edition)

Leipzig / Wien: Universal-Edition, 1911. First German Edition (and correct first). Published before Schonberg began work on his 12-tone [twelve-tone] system in 1922, he was a traditionalist and friend of Gustav Mahler, to whom this book is lengthily dedicated. This book hints at the concepts in harmony that would later dominate Schonberg's work, a transition that would become a major influence on the expressionist movement not only in German music, but also in poetry, art and cinema. & & Very Good in original pale green Art Nouveau-style wrappers. Neat cello tape repairs at the crown and heel of the wrapper, wear along the outer edges of same, slight roll to the spine. Overall, a bright, clean copy of a rare musical document.

Report of Researches Made in Great Britain and America for Clarence Moore, Esq. [with:] Swift's Genealogy

[N.p., London?, ca. 1911] - Monumental genealogical manuscript volumes recording the descent of Clarence Moore, of Washington, D.C., who died aboard the S.S. Titanic in April 1912, and his second wife Mabille, daughter of Edwin Carleton Swift of Prides Crossing, Massachusetts. They were married in 1900 and had four sons: Edwin Swift Moore (born 1901, died in childhood, 1907); Jasper Moore (born 1905); Clarence Moore (born 1910); and Lloyd Moore (born 29 November 1912). In addition to the detailed genealogical reports, the volumes include extenisve extracts from historical documents and records in England, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Maryland. The Swift Genealogy, William Swyft of Sandwitch and some of his descendants 1637-1887, includes 1296 entries and concludes with a family tree for Mabille Florence Swift. The researches for Moore were conducted by "Hester Dorsey Richardson and Albert Levin Richardson, experts in Original Research, of Baltimore, Maryland". The Moore pedigree is updated through 1926, noting that Mabille married again in 1915, to Aksel de Wichfeld of Maribe, Denmark. Clarence Moore (1865-1912), a banker and sportsman of Washington. D.C., and M.F.H. of the Loudoun Hunt and the Chevy Chase Hunt, had travelled to England to buy a pack of hounds, and sailed for home on the Titanic. Survivors reported Moore's heroic conduct. He lowered women and children into the lifeboats and refused to take a place in the boats. A beautiful and imposing genealogy (S.S. TITANIC) 2 vols., Folio. With two full page watercolor heraldic drawings in first volume: Arms, Crest and Badge of Clarence Moore; Armorial Bearings of Edwin Carleton Swift; both signed Archibald G.B.         The Army of God Knows Where

Chicago: The American Asphaltum & Rubber Co.. [1911]. First. First edition. One sheet folded and ribbon tied to make four pages. Very light pencil name, light edgewear, still a just about fine copy of this attractively printed pamphlet. The only known copy of one of Damon Runyon's first separate publications, a poem printed by an asphalt company, and dedicated to "Our Civil Engineers." The poem originally appeared in Bohemian Magazine in Boston, probably in 1910. A report of this separate publication was printed in Volume XLII, the January-June 1912 Municipal Engineering Index. The poem is also reprinted in Runyon's acknowledged first book, The Tents of Trouble, a volume of poems in flexible boards published in 1911. His best known book, Guys and Dolls, was not published until 1931. Whether this volume precedes the poem's appearance in The Tents of Trouble (making this his first book), or follows that but precedes his next publication, Rhymes of the Firing Line (making this his second book), we are unable to determine. But we can locate no additional copies of this pamphlet and it is clearly rare. .

The great success of the tale encouraged him to produce others in the same vein of romantic adventure, with increasingly deft depictions of fantastic but nonetheless carefully conceived imaginary scientific wonders. The Voyages continued with Le Voyage au centre de la Terre (1864; A Journey to the Center of the Earth), De la Terre à la Lune (1865; From the Earth to the Moon), Vingt Mille Lieues sous les mers (1869-70; Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea), and L’Île mystérieuse (1874; The Mysterious Island), in which he foresaw a number of scientific devices and developments, including the submarine, the aqualung, television, and space travel. Verne’s novels were enormously popular throughout the world; one in particular, the grippingly realistic Le Tour du monde en quatre-vingt jours (1873; Around the World in Eighty Days), generated great excitement during its serial publication in Le Temps and remained one of his most popular works" (Merriam-Webster’s Encyclopedia of Literature).

The Cuala Press,, Churchtown, Dundrum [Ireland]: 1911 - First edition. One of 350 copies. This copy SIGNED by Yeats on title page where he has crossed out his printed name in ink and signed beneath it, "W B Yeats." John Millington Synge (1871- 1909) was an Irish playwright, poet, prose writer, collector of folklore, and one of the co-founders of the Abbey Theatre. He is best known for his play "The Playboy of the Western World," which caused riots during its opening run at the Abbey. He suffered from Hodgkin's disease, a form of cancer which at the time was untreatable. He died just weeks shy of his 38th birthday. Yeats says of Synge, "He was a drifting silent man full of hidden passion, and loved wild islands, because there, set out in the light of day, he saw what lay hidden in himself."

33 x 43 Cm. 2,4 Kg. Gewicht in Gramm: 2400 [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Osiris and the Egyptian Resurrection ( 2 volumes ).

Medici Society, London 1911 - Hardcovers. Small 4to. Two volumes. xxxvi + 404pp & vii + 440pp. Original red cloth with decorations in blind, blind titling to upper board, gilt titling to spines. Color frontis in both vols., 4 photogravure plates and 2 folding plates to Volume I, numerous drawings in-text to both volumes. Budge's massive study of ancient Egyptian belief in the afterlife, and in particular the worship of Osiris. The First Edition was published by Philip Lee Warner under his own name, with an unspecified number of copies appearing under the 'Medici Society' imprint. The which was a sort of "book club" founded in 1908 by Warner and Eustace Gurney, with the express aim of making works of great artistic and literary importance available to a wider public by issuing them at as low a price a commercially feasible. As far as we can ascertain the two issues were issued more or less simultaneously in 1911, with the only differences being in binding, title page, and the color frontis (which in the Warner-imprinted issues are folding.) Spine ends bruised and a little rubbed with a few tiny tears at upper spines, corners lightly rubbed, page edges a little darkened with a few spots of foxing, early and later pages lightly and unevenly browned. Overall a tight, bright VG+ set. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Stories From Hans Andersen

London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1911. - One of 100 Copies Printed on Japanese Vellum Signed by Edmund DulacA Unique CopyIn a Handsome, Unrecorded Variant Binding[DULAC, Edmund, illustrator]. ANDERSEN, Hans [Christian]. Stories from Hans Andersen. With Illustrations by Edmund Dulac. London: Hodder & Stoughton, [1911].Edition de Luxe, limited to 100 numbered copies printed on Japanese Vellum and signed by the artist, this copy being no. 20. Large quarto (12 1/8 x 9 3/4 inches; 309 x 249 mm.). viii, 250, [2] pp. Mounted color frontispiece, with descriptive tissue guard printed in black, and twenty-seven mounted color plates (included in pagination). Plates framed with thick pale green line border and accompanied by guard leaves printed in pale green with stylized pineapples on the recto and border of snowflakes above descriptive caption on the verso. Text pages with pale green snowflake borders at top and bottom. All leaves framed with double pale green lines.Original dark chocolate brown pigskin pictorially stamped with three-peacock design and lettered in gilt on front cover and spine, with Hodder & Stoughton gilt-stamped at spine foot. Top edge gilt, others uncut. Endpapers printed in pale green with repeated design of stylized peacocks. A stunning copy, unique, and arguably the finest copy of the De Luxe Edition. The binding and endpapers do not conform to Hughey's description, and appear to be unique to this handsome copy. As she notes, the pigskin binding, ("brandy colour," not dark chocolate-brown, as here), should only have two thin gilt rules as frame, gilt lettering, date 1911 on spine, and white endpapers, not illustrated as here and in the trade edition. We contacted her for insight. Having seen only two copies of the Edition De Luxe, William Randolph Hearst's and another viewed at a Washington book fair, she reports:"So, where does your copy fit in? And when was it bound? I tend to think it was done close to original printing time, November 1911. There were a lot of oddball copies done then. The title was sold very quickly - all sold by December 1911. The fact that your endpapers are paper available at the time [to the trade edition] tends to date it.It is possible that someone or firm had this done for your copy #20. Your copy's binding design on front cover is clearly an adaptation of the endpapers but I do not think by Dulac as it does not appear in any of his other editions of Hans Andersen's work. Someone may not have liked the plain cover."If that's the case, we'd like to thank them. This special copy is the better for it.Hughey 27.
