The Purchasing Power of Money: It's Determination and Relation to Credit Interest and Crises

New York: the MacMillan Company 1911, 1st Edition. () xxii, (2), 505pp. Very good. Octavo. Original green cloth boards with gilt lettering on spine. Slight bumping to head of spine. Toning to head foredge. Ex. Lib sticker on front paste-down endpaper from Oxford University Extension Lectures Travelling Library. Pencil signature of previous owner on front free endpaper. Light pencil and two ink scholarly notations of previous owner, possibly Gerald Meier, in text and back endpapers. One foldout index table, one black and white foldout scale illustration. Textblock is clean and tight. A classic book by one of America’s greatest mathematical economists. This book explains the quantity theory of money. Fisher also explains how changing velocity and prices could cause real interest rates to differ from nominal ones, which shows how monetary forces could produce booms and busts. Furthermore, Fisher held that the dollar's value should be maintained relative to a basket of commodities instead of to gold, effectively making him the forefather of all modern central banks that target price stability. We believe the pencil signature on the f.e.p to read "W.J. Ashley", which could be William James Ashley, the english economic historian. Ashley was a professor at the University of Toronto before leaving to teach at Harvard, where he was the first Professor of Economic History in the english speaking world. This book was previously a part of the Gerald M. Meier library, the Konosuke Matsushita Professor of International Economics and Policy Analysis, Emeritus, at Stanford Graduate School of Business..

Stuttgart, Kernen, 1911-1945. 20 volumes (bound in 27). Large 4to (320 x 248mm). With 1364 chromo-lithographed plates. 21 volumes uniformly bound in half calf, titles lettered in French, 6 volumes in portfolio. A fine complete copy and in some ways a supernumerary copy of the rare French edition of Seitz' 'Die Gross-Schmetterlinge der Erde'..... The German and English edition were both published by Kerner Verlag in Stuttgart. Due to the second World War some volumes remained incomplete. The French edition, however, was published by Eugène Le Moult (1882-1967) and also distributed by him. The plates of all three language editions were printed by Kernen Verlag. The French edition is the least complete edition. Otto Kerner gives the following comment why the French edition sometimes has less plates: 'Nous avions réservé toutes les planches pour Le Moult, mais il n'avait pas l'argent pour les payer et enfin nous les avons maculées'. //The set is composed as follows:/Faune Paléarctique:/Vol. I: pp. viii, 380 with 89 plates (complete and all published); Vol. II: pp. 479, with 56 plates (complete and all published); Vol. III: pp. iii, 511, with 75 plates (complete and all published); Vol. IV: pp. v, 479, with 25 plates (complete and all published)./Supplément:/Vol. I: pp. vii, 404, with 16 plates (complete and all published); Vol. II: pp. vi, 312, with 16 plates (complete and all published); Vol. III: 26 plates, (no French text was published and only the 26 plates appeared); Vol. IV: 26 plates (no French text was published and only the 26 plates appeared)./Faune Americaine:/Vol. V: pp. xi, 1141, with 203 plates (complete and all published); Vol. VI*: pp. 1-600, with 198 plates (all published of the French edition); Vol. VII: pp. 1-156, with 57 plates (all published, the text was not completed); VIII: 16 plates (all published, no text appeared, only the 16 plates)./Faune Indo-Australienne:/Vol. IX: pp. xii, 1210, with 177 plates (complete and all published); Vol. X: pp. ii, 1-663, with 104 plates (all published of the French edition); Vol. XI**: pp. 1-296, completed with the German edition pp. 297-496, with 57 plates (all published); Vol. XII: pp. 1-44, with 17 plates, (all published of the French edition). /Fauna Africaine:/Vol. XIII: pp. 615, with 80 plates (complete and all published); Vol. XIV: pp. 600, with 80 plates (complete and all published); Vol. XV: pp. iii, 1-22, with 30 plates (all published of the French edition); Vol. XVI: 16 plates (all published, no text published of the French edition).///*Volume VI is all published of the French edition, the copy has been completed however with the English text, which runs from page 600-1451 (the numbering of pages of the French and English and German edition is the same) and has 3 more plates than the French edition./**Of volume XI we offer pages 1-296 of the French text. 2 autograph letters signed and 1 autogr. manuscript.

      N. p., [November 1911]. - 4to and 8vo. Altogether (1+1½+1=) 3½ pp. on 3 fols. To the editors of the "Österreichische Illustrierte Zeitung", who had invited him to compose a toast to himself for New Year's Eve: "Einen Toast auf Ziehrer? - During his lifetime, Ziehrer was one of the fiercest rivals of the Strauss family, especially Johann Strauss II and Eduard Strauss. "His rich musical heritage may not be comparable to the Strausses, who dominated for well over a century, but he was more prolific, having composed over 600 waltzes, polkas and marches, which are still performed today. Some of his works are even more Viennese in nature than that of the Strausses. His works are vigorous and forceful, with cheerful melodies written even near the end of the Habsburg dynasty" (Wikipedia). - The manuscript is somewhat dusty and has small inkstains as well as some red pencil notes. An introduction to the theory of statistics

London: Charles Griffin and Company, 1911. First Edition. Cloth. Very good. 8vo (200 × 140 mm), pp. xiii, [1], 376; 53 diagrams and figures, some folding; ink inscription to title-page; joints rubbed, else very good in publisher's blind blocked red cloth. First editionGeorge Udny Yule (1871-1951) was a prolific writer, but the work for which he is most remembered now is that offered here in its first edition, his Introduction to the theory of statistics (1911). So popular was it as a textbook that it went through a total of fourteen editions.Yule was a student of Karl Pearson, one of the pioneers of modern statistics, and having studied at first University College London and the at Bonn (where he worked with Hertz), he returned to University College to work for Pearson as a demonstrator in 1893. Yule stayed at the College until 1899 when he found work as an examiner. He continued to work in the field of statistics, however, and his endeavours saw him elected to the Royal Statistical Society, winning its Guy Medal in 1911, and serving as president from 1924-1926. In 1912 Yule was given the newly created lectureship in statistics at Cambridge, where he remained for the rest of his life.'Among Pearson's followers, G. Udny Yule introduced in 1900 a parameter Q (for "Quetelet"), to which his name is still attached, for associating two pairs of properties and their negations (for example: from the four, do smoker's tend also to be non-drinkers?). Like Pearson's r, Q lies between -1 (answer "no") and +1 (answer "yes"), and no association is suggested when Q=0. Yule published the first of many editions of his fine Introduction to the Theory of Statistics in 1910 [sic].' (Grattan-Guinness, p. 702).

Notables y extensas notas a pie, algunas bibliográficas. Included is a one-page musical theme for oboe specially composed for the performance by the Portuguese composer Thomás Borba.Afonso Lopes Vieira (1878-1946) was Portugal's best traditional poet of the twentieth century. In 1916 he resigned his post as Redactor da Câmara dos Deputados in Lisbon in order to dedicate himself to reading and to poetry. His home, S. Pedro de Moel, became a haven for artists, musicians and writers. He also travelled extensively in Europe and North Africa, and reminiscences of these travels often appear in his works. The author's earliest published works were written as a student at Coimbra, 1897-1900, e.g. @Para quê?, 1897, and @Náufrago, 1898. From this melancholy phase he passed into a nationalistic one, in which he publicized early Portuguese literature, aiming to "reaportuguesar Portugal tornando-o europeau." During this period he helped prepare an edition of Camões (1928) and edited Montemayor's @Diana, the @Amadis, and Rodrigues Lobo. His Portuguese translation of the @Poema do Cid was published in the periodical @Lusitânia, of which Lopes Vieira served as secretary. He also wrote works for children, e.g. @Animais nossos amigos, 1911 and @Canto infantil, 1912.@Provenance: Colombano Bordalo Pinheiro (1857-1929), one of the greatest and most original Portuguese painters of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centures. Given is near disaster miss by not boarding the Titanic in 1912 and sea travels the Niagara Falls trip may have been earlier. Some uncommon photos taken by Jennings. The photos of Niagara Falls are excellent examples of Jennings photography beyond Philadelphia and an important part of Jennings personal history and profession., Provenance: From the estate of Lois C. Jennings, wife of Ralph Jennings Sr. who was the son of William Nicholson Jennings (1860-1946). W. N. Jennings was both a scientist and photographer who made important strides in the area of scientific photography. He was the first person to take aerial photographs of lightning. Jennings won the prestigious John Price Wetherill Medal of the Franklin Institute in 1930.Why was Jennings in Niagara Falls beyond wanting to take photos of one of the seven wonders of the world? Jennings full story with this trip to Niagara Falls and his contribution to the fingerprint industry may not be written. William Jennings is credited with being the first person in the United States to record his own palm prints years apart to test their persistency. After hearing a lecture at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia in 1887 he recorded his prints. In 1937 he again recorded his prints and saw they did not change. Jennings did not publish either of the recordings until 1939. An interesting side note is that this was Jennings only connection to the fingerprint industry. [Attributes: First Edition]

Studier over metallernes elektrontheori. Afhandling for den filosofiske doktorgrad.

      V. Thaning & Appel / J. Jørgensen, Copenhagen / Hannover 1911 - A fine copy of Niels Bohr's doctorial thesis. "Bohr’s doctoral dissertation, Studier over metallernes elektrontheori(1911), was a purely theoretical work that again exhibited a mastery of the vast subject he had chosen, the electron theory of metals. This theory, which pictures the metallic state as a gas of electrons moving more or less freely in the potential created by the positively charged atoms disposed in a regular lattice, accounted qualitatively for the most varied properties of metals; but it ran into many difficulties as soon as a quantitative treatment was attempted on the basis of then accepted principles of classical electrodynamics."In order to throw light on the nature of these difficulties, Bohr developed general methods allowing him to derive the main features of the phenomena from the fundamental assumptions in a very direct way. He could thus clearly exhibit the fundamental nature of the failures of the theory, which were in fact attributed to an insufficiency of the classical principles themselves. Thus, he showed that the magnetic properties of the metals could in no way be derived from a consistent application of these principles. The rigor of his analysis gave him, at this early stage, the firm conviction of the necessity of a radical departure from classical electrodynamics for the description of atomic phenomena." (Rosenfel in DSB). Bohr’s "thesis had pushed him to the outer frontier of classical physics. It could just be that these experiences encouraged him to push into areas beyond, into the mysteries of quantum physics, as he was soon to do" (Abraham Pais). Rosenfeld, Bohr Bibliography, no. 3; Dictionary of Scientific Biography II, pp. 239; Pais, Niels Bohr’s Times, p. 111; see pp. 107-11) Large 8vo (256 x 180 mm), original printed wrappers, upper right corner very slightly bumped, short closed tear to the lower left corner, very faint rubber stamp (unreadable) to the front wrapper, old price to the half tile, the two announcements of the defense laid in - in all a fine copy in its original state. Eigenh. Brief mit U.

Tegernsee, [Anfang August 1911].. 3¾ SS. auf Doppelblatt. Gr.-8vo. Mit einigen Zeilen eh. Nachschrift seiner Gattin Elsa.. Hand d.
