Five Niagara Falls photos, all signed and or inscribed by Jennings at the reverse

1911. 1st Edition. Photo. Good. Five Niagara Falls photos, all signed and or inscribed by Jennings at the reverse. Measurements: Each is 10" x 8". Condition: Very good, some losses and creasing. In this set there are three similar prints made of of the foot of the American Falls. Three are prints of the same image each with different exposures and thus visual effects.Notes on the reverse of two of these prints give some details;1) made with 8 x 10 fixed focus Aero camera2) F11 speed 1500 f Sharp from 5ft to clouds 8 x 10 feetInteresting insight into the technical side of Jennings photography while at Niagara Falls. Only one of the photos of all in these has a date which appears to be 1911. Given is near disaster miss by not boarding the Titanic in 1912 and sea travels the Niagara Falls trip may have been earlier. Some uncommon photos taken by Jennings. The photos of Niagara Falls are excellent examples of Jennings photography beyond Philadelphia and an important part of Jennings personal history and profession. Provenance: From the estate of Lois C. Jennings, wife of Ralph Jennings Sr. who was the son of William Nicholson Jennings (1860-1946). W. N. Jennings was both a scientist and photographer who made important strides in the area of scientific photography. He was the first person to take aerial photographs of lightning. Jennings won the prestigious John Price Wetherill Medal of the Franklin Institute in 1930.Why was Jennings in Niagara Falls beyond wanting to take photos of one of the seven wonders of the world? Jennings full story with this trip to Niagara Falls and his contribution to the fingerprint industry may not be written. William Jennings is credited with being the first person in the United States to record his own palm prints years apart to test their persistency. After hearing a lecture at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia in 1887 he recorded his prints. In 1937 he again recorded his prints and saw they did not change. Jennings did not publish either of the recordings until 1939. An interesting side note is that this was Jennings only connection to the fingerprint industry.

        Peter and Wendy

London: Hodder and Stoughton,, [1911]. Illustrated by F. D. Bedford. Octavo. Original green cloth, spine and front board lettered and decorated in gilt. Frontispiece, illustrated title page and 11 plates. Spine rolled, minor stain to boards, tips a little rubbed, contents slightly foxed. A very good copy. First edition, first impression, of the expanded adaptation into novel form of the story first made popular in the 1904 stage play. In 1906 Barrie sanctioned the publication of Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, extracted from The Little White Bird and illustrated by Arthur Rackham, but he reserved for himself the task of turning his theatrical success into a novel. It tells for the first time in book form the familiar story of the stage version, with Peter as an older child flying off with Wendy and the other Darling children to battle Captain Hook and his pirates, and Barrie added a final chapter to the book in which Peter returns for Wendy years later, when she is grown with a child of her own. The stage play itself was not published until 1928.

General Lazelle 5pp. Manuscript commenting on The American Civil War

Georgeville, Quebec Province: Henry LAZELLE, 1911. No binding. Very Good. Remarkable military perspective written with a powerful pen.Autograph Letter Signed. Georgeville, Quebec Province, August 31, 1911. 5 pp. 7¾ x 10". The aged General pens an essay/letter which begins My Dear Mr. Norris. What follows is what reads more as an essay on the Civil War. Superb content throughout: "The experiance (sic) of several years in charge of the publication of the records of the Rebellion convinced me that the history of the civil war can never be fairly written with good result as they are not traced to their real sources - campaigns may be described and battles gloried or mourned over, but minor fundamental can never be measured…Spotsylvania Court House and Kenesaw Mountain were unnecessary exhibitions of the slaughter of men - Chancellorsville of a great blunder by a half intoxicated Commander who provided neither scouts nor screen of cavalry…" HENRY MARTYN LAZELLE (1832-1917) Military officer. First commanding officer at Fort Bliss, Texas; Survived two severe chest wounds from fighting Mescalero Apaches in 1859. P.O.W. for over a year in the Civil War. Brevetted major in 1864. In 1887, Lazelle was in charge of the publication of the official records of the Civil War. As colonel of the Eighteenth Infantry, he was again in Texas, as commander at Fort Clark, from 1889 to 1894. In April 1904 he retired as a brigadier general.

        The White Peacock

New York: Duffield and Company 1911 - First edition, first printing, second issue, with cancel title page with copyright date 1911. Publisher's pale blue cloth, with peacock illustration to the front board in white and dark blue, lettered in white. A good copy, with some wear and rubbing to the extremities, toning to the spine, faint vertical crease to the spine, some soiling and light spotting to the boards and spine, rear hinge cracked but still holding securely, some spotting to the page edges, otherwise bright and fresh interior. A presentable copy. Roberts A1.a2 The White Peacock is D. H. Lawrence's first novel and contains many of the themes that he would explore more fully in his later works. As with many of his novels, Lawrence heavily edited this text before its publication, preferring to rewrite new versions rather than alter the original; The White Peacock was rewritten three times from when Lawrence began writing the first draft, which bore the original title "Laetitia" in 1906. The text is set near Eastwood, where Lawrence was living and teaching as he began writing The White Peacock, and tells the stories of three young couples whose relationships are inexplicably intertwined with one another. The plot is set against the backdrop of the industrialization of England and explores how modernization affected the relationship between urban and rural areas. Notably, Lawrence drew much inspiration for The White Peacock from Maurice William Greiffenhagen's 1891 painting The Idyll, which depicts a shepherd embracing a young woman in a lush poppy field. Indeed, the characters are engaged with The Idyll in the novel both directly, by admiring and drawing inspiration from the painting, and indirectly, by essentially enacting the sexual energy and gender roles embodied in the artwork. Further experiments with liquid helium. C. On the change of electric resistance of pure metals at very low temperature etc. IV. The resistance of pure mercury at helium temperatures.Leiden: Eduard Ijdo, 1911.

First printing of the first announcement of the discovery of superconductivity, the disappearance of electrical resistance in certain materials at very low temperatures. "Of all the discoveries in condensed matter physics during the 20th century, some might call superconductivity the "crown jewel". Others might say that honour more properly belongs to semiconductors or the elucidation of the structure of DNA, given the benefits that both have brought to humanity. Yet no-one would deny that when a team led by Heike Kammerlingh Onnes stumbled across superconductivity... the scientific community was caught by complete surprise" (P. M. Grant, "Down the path of least resistance", Physics World 24, April 2011, p, 18). In the course of the same experiment, Kammerlingh Onnes and his team also made the first observation of superfluidity (see below). Very rare in original printed wrappers.

"Kammerlingh Onnes's first experiment with liquid helium was carried out on 8 April 1911 [reported in the offered paper]. "The experiment was started at 7am, and Kamerlingh Onnes arrived when helium circulation began at 11:20am. The resistance of the mercury fell with the falling temperature. After a half hour, the gold resistor was at 140 K, and soon after noon the gas thermometer denoted 5 K. The valve worked "very sensitively." Half an hour later, enough liquid helium had been transferred to test the functioning of the stirrer and to measure the very small evaporation heat of helium.

"The team established that the liquid helium did not conduct electricity, and they measured its dielectric constant. Holst made precise measurements of the resistances of mercury and gold at 4.3 K. Then the team started to reduce the vapor pressure of the helium, and it began to evaporate rapidly. They measured its specific heat and stopped at a vapor pressure of 197 mmHg (0.26 atmospheres), corresponding to about 3 K.

"Exactly at 4pm, says the notebook, the resistances of the gold and mercury were determined again. The latter was, in the historic entry, "practically zero." The notebook further records that the helium level stood quite still.

"The experiment continued into the late afternoon. At the end of the day, Kamerlingh Onnes finished with an intriguing notebook entry: "Dorsman [who had controlled and measured the temperatures] really had to hurry to make the observations." The temperature had been surprisingly hard to control. "Just before the lowest temperature [about 1.8 K] was reached, the boiling suddenly stopped and was replaced by evaporation in which the liquid visibly shrank. So, a remarkably strong evaporation at the surface." Without realizing it, the Leiden team had also observed the superfluid transition of liquid helium at 2.2 K. Two different quantum transitions had been seen for the first time, in one lab on one and the same day!

"Three weeks later, Kamerlingh Onnes reported his results at the April meeting of the [Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen]. For the resistance of ultrapure mercury, he told the audience, his model had yielded three predictions: (1) at 4.3 K the resistance should be much smaller than at 14 K, but still measurable with his equipment; (2) it should not yet be independent of temperature; and (3) at very low temperatures it should become zero within the limits of experimental accuracy. Those predictions, Kamerlingh Onnes concluded, had been completely confirmed by the experiment" (van Delft & Kes, p. 41).

"Kamerlingh Onnes's career at Leiden spanned four decades. His central work was the measurement of properties of matter at very low temperatures. Researchers in other countries had recently succeeded in liquefying air (78.6 K), and Kamerlingh Onnes set out to follow them. It was not until 1892 that his apparatus for liquefying air and oxygen was in operation ...With this apparatus, which produced large quantities of liquid air and oxygen, Kamerlingh Onnes pursued research lines following Van der Waals (molecular properties) and Lorentz (electromagnetic properties). In both areas he made crucial contributions. But to reach yet lower temperatures necessary to investigate the simplest substances, hydrogen and helium, a different apparatus was needed. James Dewar had liquefied hydrogen in 1898, and Kamerlingh Onnes needed a new apparatus in order to compete. Because the new method used compressed gases, the safety concerns of the city government had to be addressed, and the first apparatus was not ready until 1905. By the following year, with an improved apparatus, Kamerlingh Onnes was able to produce large quantities of liquid hydrogen (20.4 K), and in 1908 he succeeded in liquefying helium (4.2 K). For this achievement he received the Nobel Prize in 1913. Until 1923 Kamerlingh Onnes's laboratory (named after him in 1932) was the only place in the world where helium could be liquefied.

"With this apparatus, Kamerlingh Onnes was able to reach temperatures as low as 1 K, and eventually 0.83 K. In his investigations of the electrical properties of substances at low temperatures he expected electrical resistance to decrease to a certain point and then increase without bounds. To his surprise, however, he found, in 1911, that it decreased to zero, and that it did so discontinuously when a metal reached a certain transition temperature. The phenomenon of superconductivity remained unexplained until the 1950s" (from A History of Science in The Netherlands, Brill, 1999).

According to van Delft & Kes (p. 43), Kammerlingh Onnes's report of his 8 April experiment was published first in the offered journal, and was reprinted later in the same year in Vol. 13 of the Verslagen van de Afdeeling Natuurkunde der Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen te Amsterdam, although on the first page it is stated that the article was translated from the KNAW. The superconductivity paper is preceded in this issue by a paper by Kmmerlingh Onnes & C. A. Crommelin (120a). "Isotherms of monatomic substances and of their binary mixtures. IX. The behavior of argon with regard to the law of corresponding states" (pp. 1-13 and the plate).

For a detailed account of the work of Kammerlingh Onnes and his research team, based on a study of his original notebooks, see: Dirk von Delft & Peter Kes, 'The discovery of superconductivity,' pp. 38-42 in Physics Today, Vol. 63, No. 9, September 2010.. Pp. 3-5 (second series) in Communications of the Physical Laboratory of the University of Leiden, No. 120, April 1911. 8vo (243 x 165 mm), pp. 13, 5, with one folding plate.
