Government of Formosa, Report on the Control of the Aborigines in Formosa

Government of Japan, Taihoku, Formosa 1911 - Printed in Japan by the Toyo Printing Company, Tokyo, green blindstamped cloth with gilt lettering on the spine, 8vo (6 1/4 x 8 3/4 in. - 15.9 x 22.5 cm), text in English, 45 pages of text and tables, 3 maps and an additional 100 pages of black and white halftone plates. Japan gained control over Formosa (Taiwan) in 1895 as a result of the Japan-China war. A major undertaking by the Japanese government was to understand and exercise authority over the nine "aboriginal" groups or tribes inhabiting the island of Formosa. This report documents that activity. The major aboriginal groupings/tribes were the Tiayal, Saisett, Ami, Bunun, Tsuou, Piyuma, Tsarisen, Paiwan and Yami. Early in the book there is a nine color coded map which shows the distribution of these nine tribes/groups. ~ Condition. The book is in Good+ condition. The boards have some rubbed areas and spots where there is light puckering under the cloth. There is some looseness in the signatures at the middle but the hinges are solid and binding strong. All plates, maps and tables are present. The maps are in near fine condition with no tears or staining. On a free front paper is tipped in a card reading "With the Compliments of Rimpie Otsu, Superintendent, Bureau of Aboriginal Affairs, Government of Formosa, Taihoku, Formosa." ~~ More information, to include digital pics, available on request.

Souvenir of the First British Naval Airship, 1911.

N.p. [?London], n.d. c. 1911 - A small printed card, approx. 140 x 90mm., printed to both sides on "IOCO", in very good condition. The Mayfly was designed as the first airship - HMA No. 1 - of the British Navy, and was to that date the largest airship in existence. Construction began in 1909, and by February 1911 the first static trials took place in the Barrow-in-Furness Naval Construction Yard. Further tests followed before a full flight trail on the 24 September 1911. It seems that, as Mayfly was being moved from the hangar, a severe gust of wind, coupled with mishandling errors, resulted in undue strain being placed on the frame; Mayfly snapped at the centre, and the two halves fell into the waters of Cavendish Dock. The project was subsequently shelved The present apparently unrecorded "Souvenir" provides details of the ship, though not of her fate. One side of the souvenir prints some technical details of the ship, and a small paragraph states "As this little bit is part of the very limited available amount of the actual material used, it will in years to come be of unparalleled historical interest." On the other side is printed an image of the Mayfly, above the words "This is a 'little bit to spare' of 'Ioco,', the fabric used in the construction of the ship. It is made in Scotland by the IOCO PROOFING CO., Ltd., Fraser Street, Bridgeton, Glasgow, whose fabrics have been tested and proved to be the most suitable waterproof material in the world for 'Land, Sea or Air.'" The last few lines on this side of the souvenir direct the reader for more information about the airship to "All the World's Airships" by Fred T. Jane, with the publisher's details (Sampson Low & Co., London), but it is not clear whether the publishers were responsible for the printing of this souvenir.

1911. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1911. 1 preliminary page + 4 pp undated ads. Original red cloth. First Edition of Edith Wharton's best-known book, a grim novella sited on a bleak Massachusetts farm. "As in THE HOUSE OF MIRTH, the central problem is that of the barriers imposed by local convention upon an individual whose happiness depends on rising above them" [OCAL].~This copy's leaves have a gilt top edge, and the word "wearily" is printed properly at the bottom of p. 135. Both copies with gilt top edge and copies with plain top edge appear with this word both perfect and battered: therefore, although it is generally assumed that "wearily" became battered during the 6000-copy print run (though it's possible it became battered and was then fixed), one cannot assume that the 2500 copies with gilt top edge were printed or issued earlier than the 3500 copies with plain top edge. In any event, this is a nearly fine copy (two early signatures on the front paste-down). Garrison A19.1.a.

        Mémoires. L'intervention française au Mexique

Librairie Emile Nourry, Paris 1911 - 3 volumes. Volume 1. vi+314 with frontispiece and plates; volume 2. 372 pages with frontispiece and plates. volume 3. 518 pages with frontispiece and one plate. Royal octavo (9 1/4" x6 1/4") Bound in quarter leather with gilt lettering to spine and raised spine bands; marbled boards. Preface par M. le Cte de MoüyFirst edition. Mémoires: L'Intervention Française au Mexique by Charles Blanchot. This very rare memoir by Charles Blanchot was aide-de-camp to General Bazaine, Supreme Commander of French Forces in Mexico during Mexico's Second Empire. There is so much in here that has never seen light in either Spanish or English, for instance: the powerful if behind-the-scenes role of Doña Juliana de Gómez Pedraza, widow of Manuel Gómez Pedraza, and the vicious if, as Blanchot suggests, unfounded rumors circulating in Mexico City about Bazaine in 1866-7. Blanchot, who married an American of French origin in Mexico City, also offers a detailed and lively portrait of Mexico City society at the time. Condition: First signature of volume one detached with some edge wear along the fore-edges, title to volume two detached, binding edges and hinges rubbed, spines darkened. A good copy of a very rare and scarce work. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[Original Team Portrait Photograph of an African-American Baseball Team]: Grace Presbyterian Base Ball Team Champions Presbyterian Brotherhood League Season 1911

[Chicago]: H.T. Webb, 32 S. Clark St.. 1911. Mammoth plate silver gelatin portrait photograph. Image size approximately 19" x 14.5" on 22" x 19" thick card mount. Hand captioned beneath the image: "Grace Presbyterian Base Ball Team Champions Presbyterian Brotherhood League Season 1911." Toning and small nicks on the edges of the mount only, lettering is rubbed but easily readable, the image is fine. Spectacular portrait of 15 African-American men, all but three in uniform, with trophy, mitts, and a catcher's mask. One of the three men in street clothing is on crutches, all members of an African-American amateur baseball team from Chicago (references to the photographer Webb appear in various Chicago sources; he also seems to have photographed some of the Chicago White Sox players). Grace Presbyterian was established in 1888 as a storefront African-American church that existed until around 1917. The Presbyterian Brotherhood was a men's club meant to promote masculine Christianity. We have been unable to determine whether the Presbyterian Brotherhood League was segregated or not. Chicago had a vibrant African-American culture after the First Great Migration. While we have been unable to identify individual players, the professional black baseball teams of Rube Foster were thriving in this period, and further investigation is probably warranted. An unusually large and aesthetically satisfying image. Portraits of African-American baseball teams from this era, especially mammoth plate images, are rare. .
