Ein neues Laboratorium zur Erforschung der bedingten Reflexe. Offprint

1911 - Pavlov, Ivan Petrovich (1849-1936). Ein neues Laboratorium zur Erforschung der bedingten Reflexe. Offprint from Ergebnisse der Physiologie 11 (1911). 8vo. 357-371pp. 250 x 168 mm. Original printed wrappers, creased vertically, holes punched in left margin. Inscribed by Pavlov to physiologist Ernest Henry Starling (1866-1927) as follows: "Dem Prof. E. H. Starling mit vielen Grüssen vom Verfasser." First Edition Offprint Issue. Pavlov received the 1904 Nobel Prize in physiology / medicine for his studies of the physiology of digestion, which revealed the part that the nervous system plays in controlling digestive secretions. In conducting his physiological researches, Pavlov introduced the method of long-term or continuous experimentation, which—in contrast with traditional vivisectional methods—allowed him to study the operation of physiological processes in healthy animals under normal conditions over extended periods of time. His investigations of the nervous system’s role in digestion led him to explore the phenomenon of "psychic" stimulation; i.e., salivary secretion prompted by the sight or smell of food rather than by direct contact. In Pavlov’s hands this became a powerful tool for investigating the functions of the cerebral cortex and the physiology of behavior. The most famous outcome of his researches is, of course, the artificial conditioned reflex, in which physiological processes such as salivation are arbitrarily associated with stimuli such as the ringing of a bell.Pavlov presented this offprint, discussing a new laboratory for studying conditioned reflexes, to the British physiologist Ernest Henry Starling, co-discoverer (with Bayliss) of pancreatic secretin (1902; see Garrison-Morton 1024) and co-developer (again with Bayliss) of the theory of hormonal control of internal secretion (1905; see Garrison-Morton 1122). Pavlov had been a strong advocate of the "nervist" doctrine of physiology, which held that the nervous system controlled most body activities; however, Starling and Bayliss’s discovery of secretin, which confirmed the humoral (rather than nervous) transmission of impulses from the intestine to the pancreas, forced Pavlov to rework his theories of digestion (see Babkin, Pavlov, pp. 228-230).         Works

1911 - BAIN, Francis William. Works. London: Methuen, (1911-13). Nine volumes. Slim 12mo, contemporary three-quarter red close-grain morocco, raised bands, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, marbled boards and endpapers, top edges gilt. $1750.Mixed later editions comprising this nine-volume set of Hindu love stories, purported by F.W. Bain to be his translations of ancient Sanscrit manuscripts. Handsomely bound by Bickers & Son.British author of fantasy stories Francis William Bain claimed that the tales he published were translated from ancient Hindu Sanskrit. Bain was for a number of years a fellow of All Souls College at Oxford, and then professor of History at the Deccan College in Poona, British Indiaâ€" presumably being well schooled in both the Eastern and Western traditions. Bain offered the first of these tales, A Digit of the Moon (first published in 1898), as his translation of the eighth part of a 16-part Sanskrit manuscript presented to him by an unidentified brahmin. Argument over the authenticity of Bain’s “translations” raged throughout his life. Each of the stories contains erudite footnotes explaining Sanskrit puns and wordplay that Bain himself confessed he did not fully understand. A contemporary reviewer saw it this way: “Though palpably a pretence, they are graceful fancies, and might as well have appeared for what they really are instead of masquerading as ‘translations.’ No Hindu, unless of this generation and under foreign influence, ever conceived these stories… Moreover, they are of a strict propriety, whereas original Hindu love stories would put Rabelais’s ghost to the blush” (The Nation, 1905). A Digit of the Moon was followed by a number of other stories in the same mode: including In the Great God’s Hair, Bubbles of the Foam, An Essence of the Dusk, Ashes of a God, Mine of Faults, and A Heifer of the Dawn. A fine set, with only light flecks of foxing to fore-edges, elegantly bound. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Emir of Bokhara and his Country

Copenhagen: Gyldendalske Boghandel, Nordisk Forlag; London, William Heinemann, , 1911. Journeys and Studies in Bokhara (With a Chapter on my Voyage on the Amu Darya to Khiva.) Large octavo. Original plum cloth, title gilt to upper board and spine. Large folding coloured map in band inside lower board, numerous half-tone illustrations from the author's own photographs to the text, many full-page. A little rubbed at the extremities, spine a touch dulled, expertly restored at head and tail, pale foxing to the prefatory matter, light browning else, a very good copy with the hinges entirely sound. First Edition. Highly detailed and well-illustrated study of the region by the Secretary of the Royal Danish Geographical Society, drawing on the material accumulated during his command of the First and Second Danish Pamir Expeditions, 1896-97, 1898-99, from which he brought back more than 700 artefacts of ethnographic and scientific significance now at the Danish National Museum in Copenhagen. Olufsen was fluent in Russian and Usbegic, so he was able to conduct his own interviews with natives, employing only a Tajik interpreter with whom he conversed in Ottoman Turkish. In Bokhara the travellers "were welcomed as guests" by the Emir, lengthening their stay, with the result that the present study "can be used as a work of reference on the details of the region's architecture, archaeology, customs, religions, traditional costume, and for its profuse illustration from photographs of ethnographic and handcrafted pieces, monuments and local peoples" (Gorshenina, Explorateurs en Asie Centrale. Voyageurs et aventuriers de Marco Polo à Ella Maillart, pp. 225, cataloguer's translation).. Quite a fragile production, the thin cloth, heavy text-block, and large folding map all contributing to the frail condition of copies usually encountered, this, lightly and skilfully restored, is a very superior copy.

On a method of making visible the paths of ionising particles through a gas With: On an expansion apparatus for making visible...

London: Dell Publishing, 1911-1912. "The Most Original Apparatus in the Whole History of Physics" Wilson, Charles Thomson Rees (1869-1959). (1) On a method of making visible the paths of ionising particles through a gas. In: Proc. Roy. Soc., series A, 85 (1911): 285-88. Plate. (2) On an expansion apparatus for making visible the tracks of ionising particles in gases and some results obtained by its use. In: ibid. 87 (1912): 277-292. 4 plates on 2 leaves. Together two whole numbers, 8vo. London: Harrison & Sons, 1911-12. 255 x 179 mm. Orig. printed wrappers, very slightly worn, pencil notations on back wrappers. Fine copies. Boxed. First Editions. Wilson received a share of the 1927 Nobel Prize for physics for his invention of the cloud chamber, which makes visible the tracks of ionizing particles. Wilson's device, which Rutherford called "the most original apparatus in the whole history of physics" (quoted in Magill, p. 344) became standard equipment in physics laboratories, and made possible numerous important discoveries in the fields of particle and nuclear physics. "The phenomena discovered empirically by Wilson may, briefly, be explained as follows. When air saturated with water vapor is suddenly cooled by an adiabatic expansion, it becomes supersaturated. In this condition, condensation into droplets will occur, provided there are nuclei present. Dust particles allow drops to form immediately, so Wilson carefully eliminated all gross matter from his apparatus. Negative ions act as nuclei at an expansion ratio of 1.25 (fourfold supersaturation) and positive ions become nuclei at 1.31 (sixfold supersaturation)" (DSB). Wilson constructed his first cloud chamber in 1895, and in 1910 designed an improved model with better illumination which allowed results to be photographed. In March 1911 Wilson was able to observe the track of an alpha ray by condensing water drops onto the ions produced by its passage, describing his results in "On a method of making visible the paths of ionising particles through a gas" (no. 1 above). No. 2, Wilson's classic "On an expansion apparatus for making visible the tracks of ionising particles in gases and some results obtained by its use," published a little over a year later, contains "some of the best photographs of alpha-particle, beta-particle and X-ray tracks" (Magill, p. 343). The French edition is the least complete edition. Otto Kerner gives the following comment why the French edition sometimes has less plates: 'Nous avions réservé toutes les planches pour Le Moult, mais il n'avait pas l'argent pour les payer et enfin nous les avons maculées'.The set is composed as follows:Faune Paléarctique:Vol. I: pp. viii, 380 with 89 plates (complete and all published); Vol. II: pp. 479, with 56 plates (complete and all published); Vol. III: pp. iii, 511, with 75 plates (complete and all published); Vol. IV: pp. v, 479, with 25 plates (complete and all published).Supplément:Vol. I: pp. vii, 404, with 16 plates (complete and all published); Vol. II: pp. vi, 312, with 16 plates (complete and all published); Vol. III: 26 plates, (no French text was published and only the 26 plates appeared); Vol. IV: 26 plates (no French text was published and only the 26 plates appeared).Faune Americaine:Vol. V: pp. xi, 1141, with 203 plates (complete and all published); Vol. VI*: pp. 1-600, with 198 plates (all published of the French edition); Vol. VII: pp. 1-156, with 57 plates (all published, the text was not completed); VIII: 16 plates (all published, no text appeared, only the 16 plates).Faune Indo-Australienne:Vol. IX: pp. xii, 1210, with 177 plates (complete and all published); Vol. X: pp. ii, 1-663, with 104 plates (all published of the French edition); Vol. XI**: pp. 1-296, completed with the German edition pp. 297-496, with 57 plates (all published); Vol. XII: pp. 1-44, with 17 plates, (all published of the French edition).Fauna Africaine:Vol. XIII: pp. 615, with 80 plates (complete and all published); Vol. XIV: pp. 600, with 80 plates (complete and all published); Vol. XV: pp. iii, 1-22, with 30 plates (all published of the French edition); Vol. XVI: 16 plates (all published, no text published of the French edition).*Volume VI is all published of the French edition, the copy has been completed however with the English text, which runs from page 600-1451 (the numbering of pages of the French and English and German edition is the same) and has 3 more plates than the French edition.**Of volume XI we offer pages 1-296 of the French text.         Peter and Wendy

Hodder & Stoughton, London 1911 - Until the 1940s, Hodder & Stoughton were famously useless in consistently identifying their first editions -- or identifying them at all. There are no later printings mentioned here, there are 13 glossy B&W plates (if we include both the frontispiece and the facing, glossy title page), and the letter "A" stands alone at the bottom of the first page of text. Eight titles are listed as "By the same author" to verso of half-title page, none later than 1910. And there is NO publisher's catalog at rear. So we're going to brazenly presume we have here the true 1911 first printing, undated. All the glossy B&W plates (some of which could have printed with slightly higher contrast, if it'd been up to us, though tastes do change) appear to be attached where they ought to be, though the plate opposite pg. 144 ("To Die Will Be an Awfully Big Adventure!") shows enough fraying to edges that we suspect it was once loose and has been (competently) re-tipped into place. Gilt devices considerably faded to front board and so nearly vanished from spine that the spine titles are essentially now a blind-stamping. A decorative green bookplate has been glued to front pastedown but it remains blank. Moderate browning to endpapers. Middle of rear hinge is opening, but rear board is still well attached and we have not attempted any repair; call this copy "good," but no better. 267 pp. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        A Gallery of Girls

The Century Co., NY, 1911. Near Fine with No dust jacket as issued. First Printing. Hard Cover Publisher's full green cloth, color paste-down on cover. Illustrated with color paste-down on cover, illustrated title page, 39 gorgeous, full-page, full-color plates by Coles Phillips, and 39 cameo B drawings on pages facing the color plates. Printed on thick, glossy stock. Clarence Coles Phillips (1880 -1927) was an American artist and illustrator. He is known for his stylish images of women and a signature use of negative space in the paintings he created for advertisements and the covers of popular magazines. In 1907, Phillips met with J. A. Mitchell, the publisher of Life magazine, and was hired onto its staff at the age of twenty-six. Phillips would be associated with the magazine throughout his life. The work of Phillips quickly became popular with the Life readers. In May 1908, he created a cover for the magazine that featured his first "fadeaway girl" design with a figure whose clothing matched, and disappeared into, the background. Phillips developed this idea in many subsequent covers. Phillips' use of negative space allowed the viewer to "fill-in" the image; it also reduced printing costs for the magazine, as "the novelty of the technique and the striking design qualities masked the fact that Life was getting by with single color or two-color covers in a day when full-color covers were de rigueur for the better magazines". Phillips worked in watercolor and always painted from life; according to his biographer, Michael Schau, "he refused to work from photographs or to use the pantograph." Phillips produced cover art for other national magazines besides Life, including Good Housekeeping, which for two years (beginning in July 1912) made him their sole cover artist. Phillips also created many advertising images for makers of women's clothing, and other advertisers. His series depicting women wearing Holeproof Hosiery products was considered daring for its time. Head, heel and corners very lightly worn, unmarked, tight, square, and clean. All illustrations in perfect condition, bright and clear. NEAR FINE. Color Plates. 4to 11" - 13" tall. (87) pp

[PRIMERA EDICION]" [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Peter and Wendy

London: Hodder & Stoughton,, 1911. Illustrated by F. D. Bedford. Octavo. Original green cloth, titles and pictorial decoration to spine and front board in gilt. With the dust jacket. Frontispiece, illustrated title page and 11 plates. Armorial bookplate to front pastedown. Boards faintly discoloured, partial tanning to endpapers, edges of text block and margins of text slightly spotted. An excellent copy in a lightly edge-chipped jacket with toned spine panel, short closed tear and some creasing to bottom left corner of rear panel and faint horizontal crease to upper part of front panel. First edition, first impression, first issue binding with the decorations and titles gilt. Peter and Wendy is an expanded adaptation into novel form of the story first made popular in the 1904 stage play Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up. It tells the familiar story of the stage version, with Peter as an older child flying off with Wendy and the other Darling children to battle Captain Hook and his pirates, but Barrie added a final chapter to the book in which Peter returns for Wendy years later, when she is grown with a child of her own. The stage play itself was not published until 1928. The illustrator, Francis Donkin Bedford (1864?-1954), was originally a practising architect in London but changed career paths in the 1880s and "gained a wide popularity in the realm of children's books and as a landscape illustrator" (The Dictionary of 19th Century British Book Illustrators). He worked prolifically until the early 1930s, illustrating English fairy tales and nursery rhymes as well as several Dickens titles, including A Cricket on the Hearth (1927) and A Christmas Carol (1931). His illustrations for Peter and Wendy, at once delicate and full of the story's boisterous spirit of adventure, are generally considered as his greatest achievement.
