Autograph postcard signed "Bartók" to Richard Wank, a piano student of Bartók's in Budapest, dated February [1911]

      - "Although he earned his living mainly from teaching and playing the piano and was a relentless collector and analyst of folk music, Bartók is recognized today principally as a composer. He is now considered, along with Liszt, to be his country’s greatest composer, and, with Kodály and Dohnányi, a founding figure of 20th-century Hungarian musical culture." Malcolm Gillies We would like to thank Professor Peter Laki of Bard College for his kind assistance in the cataloguing of this item. Bartók writes to change the time of his student's lesson, from Thursday to Saturday at 9, and send greetings. Uniformly browned, slightly lighter around margins, most probably from an earlier matting; partial postmarks to both recto and verso.

THE DOOR IN THE WALL. Illustrated with Photogravures from Photographs by Alvin Langdon Coburn.

Mitchell Kennerley, New York & London 1911 - Folio, (iv), 153, (i) pp., with 10 tipped-in hand-pulled photogravure plates printed under the supervision of Coburn. Newly bound in linen-backed paper over boards, with the original titling in facsimile on the upper board, and printed paper spine label. The gravure plates are rich in tone and have left transfers on the opposing page as is usually found. The original front free endpaper and half-title page show a mottle pattern from an early inlaid printed item, and there is an occasional spot of foxing to a blank margin. Otherwise, this a very good copy on French hand made paper with types and decorations designed by Frederic W. Goudy and set by Bertha S. Goudy. There were 600 copies of this book printed but only approx. 300 have the full complement of hand-pulled photogravures, the others are either lacking plates or were completed with plates printed by aquatone, a halftone process. This copy is one of the three hundred that contains all plates in hand-pulled photogravure. THE TRUTHFUL LENS #184. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Anne of Greene Gables

Boston: L.C. Page, and Company 1911 - Illustrated by May Austin Claus and William Anton Joseph Claus. First edition, first printing of the first book in the author's Avonlea series. Publisher's ribbed light teal cloth, with gilt lettering to the front board and spine, illustration of a woman's profile to laid on the front board. Very good, with some wear and rubbing to the extremities, minor toning to the spine, some rubbing and light soiling to the boards, inner hinges discreetly repaired, light spotting to the endpapers, otherwise bright and clean interior. A sturdy and presentable copy. Housed in a custom maroon slipcase. Anne of Green Gables is a story about a young orphan girl, Anne Shirley, who is sent to live on a farm on Prince Edward Island with a family who had intended to adopt a boy. Montgomery drew much of the novel's setting from her own childhood experiences living with her grandparents on the eastern coast of the island. Like her readers, the author was quite taken with the jovial character she had created and wrote multiple sequels to this first installment of what would become a beloved children's series.         More Ghost Stories of an Antiquary

Edward Arnold, London 1911 - First edition, first printing with the ads. pp. [i-iv], v-vii, [viii], [1-2] 3-274, 24, ads pp. 1 vols. 8vo. The second work of fiction by the distinguished scholar, educator, administrator and antiquarian who was one of the greatest ghost-story writers of all time. Had he not written in the genre, Rhodes, born in 1862, would have been remembered as a writer and expert on apocryphal literature and medieval manuscripts, as director of Cambridge's Fitzwilliam Museum, a noteworthy administrator of King's College, and Provost of Eton until his death in 1936. Instead, we know him as a masterful narrator who 'surpassed most writers of ghost stories in the eeriness of his atmosphere, the individual and peculiarly creepy quality of his plots, and the vindictiveness and maligancy of his ghosts." (Kunitz & Haycraft, Twentieth Century Authors). Among the seven extremely creepy stories in this volume is the frequently anthologized tale, "The Tractate Middoth." Bleiler, Supernatural Fiction, p. 279 Original pictorial gray cloth (upper board with a bat in flight), front and spine panels stamped in black, Arnold imprint at foot, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. Minor rubbing. Near fine pp. [i-iv], v-vii, [viii], [1-2] 3-274, 24, ads pp. 1 vols. 8vo First edition, first printing with the ads. [Attributes: First Edition]

Album de Poemes Tires du Livre de Jade.

The Brook, Hammersmith: Eragny Press, 1911. Illustrated with seven large round wood engravings, a device and initial and eleven small initials designed by Lucien Pissarro and engraved by Lucien and Esther Pissarro, printed in gold and in colours. Small 4to., original full soft jade-green kid, bound in the Japanese manner being tied with brown silk cord, upper cover with title and ornament blocked in gold. An unusally good copy with only very mild darkening to the spine. Pissarro's masterpiece in response to Japanese influence of which Lucien wrote, it "gave me particular pleasure to produce". He used Japanese vellum since it could be used dry, thus avoiding the problem of gold sticking aggressively to wet paper and demonstrating the Pissarro's extraordinary skill as printers.

Autograph letter signed „In tiefer Liebe Dein Freund".

Sindelsdorf, 2. II. 1911. - 8vo. 4 pp. Important letter to Maria Franck, his future wife, with a sketch in black ink of the painting „Weidende Pferde IV" (Die roten Pferde), within the text. Marc is describing and illustrating his very large new painting of three horses grazing in a landscape, which is wholly coloured except one corner he has to change, explaining that the colours are hard to describe but that the landscape uses pure cadmium and cobalt blue, deep green and and carmine red, the horses in shades of yellow, brown and violet, emphasizing that the colours are controlled within a strong triangular composition, also telling her of a forthcoming meeting of the Neue Künstlervereinigung München (N.K.V.M) with Erbslöh, Werefkin, Kanoldt and others (".Wir sind blödsinnig neugierig, was sie sagen ").Ich hab noch ein sehr grosses Bild mit 3 Pferden in der Landschaft, ganz farbig von einerEcke zur anderen, angefangen, die Pferde im Dreie[c]k aufgestellt. Die Farben sind schwer zu beschreiben. Im Terrain reiner Zinnoberneben reinemCadmium u. Cobaltblau, tiefemGrün u Carminrot, die Pferde gelbbraun bis violette. Sehr stark modellirtes Terrain, ganze Partien.in reinstem Blau! Kannst du dir das denken? Die Formen alle. stark u. klar, damit sie die Farben aushalten Marc discusses the dispensation needed to allow him to marry Marie, praising the petition that has been prepared by Fromm, inferring that Schnür’s deposition must have been very strange and even comical, and that he feels confident of success.Weidende Pferde IV (Die roten Pferde) [Grazing Horses (The Red Horses)], now in a private collection, is one of a series of three monumental paintings in primary colours made by Marc in 1911, also including Yellow Cow and the Large Blue Horses. Although Marc’s ink sketch clearly identifies the painting here, his description of the colours is different from the final version. However he makes clear his principle of containing the strong colours within a strong formal scheme. Marc had married Marie Schnür in 1908 in a marriage of convenience. However when she divorced him, she laid a charge of adultery against him, which meant that he had to petition for a dispensation to allow him to marry Marie Franck, which he did in London in 1911.

        The Pink Shop.

London: F.V. White and Co., 1911., 1911. INSCRIBED FIRST EDITION WITH SIGNED LETTER. Octavo, pp.312. Bound in publisher's blue cloth, gilt titles to upper, gilt titles and publisher's imprint to spine; lower edge uncut. Inscribed by the author "With all good wishes / Fergus Hume / Thundersley Essex, 11th Sept 1911", and includes a letter which touchingly records the author's desire that all should "act our several parts on the stage of the world", typed and signed by Hume, and dated "24th September 1911"; occasional and marginal foxing. Binding shows well, with minor rubbing to edges, bumping to spine ends, and a slight lean; spotted to front edge. Somewhat of a trailblazer in crime fiction, Hume not only wrote the novel which arguably inspired Arthur Conan Doyle to write Sherlock Holmes (The Mystery of a Hansom Cab), but also wrote a mystery in which the leading investigator is a woman - Miss Perry Toat.

Churchill wrote in his obituary for The Times: "He expected to die; he was willing to die for the dear England whose beauty and majesty he knew…The thoughts to which he gave expression in the very few incomparable war sonnets which he has left behind will be shared by many thousands of young men moving resolutely and blithely into this, the hardest, the cruellest and the least rewarded of all the wars that men have fought." The poet's second book, 1914 and Other Poems, was published posthumously.

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Peter and Wendy

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons. Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 1911. First; First. First American Edition, first issue (simultaneous with the London Harrap edition). The true first is distinguished by three points: 1. Scribner's seal, 2."Published October, 1911" to copyright page and 3. A "$1.50 net" price to the jacket's front cover (later issues priced at $2.50 on the front flap). A fine copy with Peter, Mermaids & the Click-Tock Crocodile to the front and Captain Hook to the spine. First issue jacket repeats the binding images and adds the price. Later editions (though still copyrighted 1911) lack the oddly-placed price to the front of the jacket. Jacket frayed along top with not entirely successful archival repairs from long ago. Book itself is as new: tight hinges and gutters; no owners' names, no bookplates, no sunning nor wear; gilt is bright & clean. "Sir James Matthew Barrie (1860 - 1937) was a Scottish author and dramatist, the child of a family of small-town weavers, and best remembered today as the creator of Peter Pan. He was educated in Scotland but moved to London, where he developed a career as a novelist and playwright. There he met the Llewelyn Davies boys who inspired him to write about a baby boy who has magical adventures in Kensington Gardens (included in The Little White Bird), then to write Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up, a "fairy play" about an ageless boy and an ordinary girl named Wendy who have adventures in the fantasy setting of Neverland. Peter Pan quickly overshadowed his previous work [and was] credited with popularizing the name Wendy, which was very uncommon previously. Barrie unofficially adopted the Davies boys following the deaths of their parents. Before his death, he gave the rights to the Peter Pan works to Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London, which continues to benefit from them." Wikipedia 2016; 8vo ; [ix], 267 pages .

Extremities a little rubbed, some splash marks on spine and lower board, the white from the spine penguin somewhat abraded. A slight damp mark of the top edges is evident, very slightly, in the head margin of a few leaves. Otherwise a good to very good clean copy. ISBN 0708111459 ***Spence 262, Renard 296, Rosove 67.A1. The 'Pourquoi Pas?' was later lost in the Arctic when her boilers blew up; all but one of the crew, including Charcot, were killed. .
