Flagstaff: The Coconino Sun, 1911., 1911. First edition. First edition. 13" x 20" newspaper issued by The Coconino Sun of Flagstaff, Arizona, Friday, May 19, 199, Volume XXVIII, Number 25. This newspaper is a descendent of the Arizona Daily Star, Tombstone's Daily Nugget, Arizona Daily Sun, the Mohave Miner, The Coconino Sun was named by Clarkson M. Funston, its editor, to coincide with the founding of Coconino County, with Flagstaff as the county seat. However six months later the name of the newspaper was again changed to the Coconino Weekly Sun. In 1896 attorney Jerome Edwin Jones, owner of the rival newspaper, the Flagstaff Democrat, purchased the Coconino Weekly Sun and merged the two newspapers into the Flagstaff Sun - Democrat. Then due to Flagstaff's nickname being the Skylight City, Jones once again changed the name of the newspaper on November 25, 1896, to the Skylight Kicker, as he promised "to kick higher, quicker, truer, harder and more than any newspaper in the West." However on January 15, 1898, Clarkson M. Funston re-purchased the newspaper and changed the masthead back to the Coconino Sun, which then became the area's dominant newspaper. The newspaper carries news pertinent to northern Arizona and continued to be published into 1978. This newspaper issue being offered for sale is a weekly which was published each Friday of the week and this copy was published on Friday, May 19, 1911. Its contents include news of the territory, news of local citizens and their various journeys and events, the murder of a prominent official, Base Ball Dope, church directory, Probate Court notices, range and market news, advertising, educational articles, lumbering, railroad news, and everything that was fit to print. The importance of this issue is that it shows 72 ranches with over 125 of their brands on cattle and horses. The ranches are from the communities of Canyon Diablo, Ash Fork, Flagstaff, Williams, Cornville, Winslow, Camp Verde, Dewey, Seligman, Maine, Sedona, and Jerome. The six pages are separated and in very good condition.

The Emir of Bokhara and his Country.

Copenhagen: Gyldendalske Boghandel, Nordisk Forlag; London, William Heinemann, , 1911. Journeys and Studies in Bokhara (With a Chapter on my Voyage on the Amu Darya to Khiva.) Large octavo. Original plum cloth, title gilt to front board and spine. Large folding coloured map in band inside lower board, numerous half-tone illustrations from the author's own photographs to the text, many full-page. A little rubbed, the spine lettering a touch oxidised, judicious restoration at the head of the spine, light foxing to the prefatory matter and fore-edge, else very good. First Edition. This copy inscribed by the author on the title page. Highly detailed and well-illustrated study of the region by the Secretary of the Royal Danish Geographical Society, drawing on the material accumulated during his command of the First and Second Danish Pamir Expeditions, 1896-97, 1898-99, from which he brought back more than 700 artefacts of ethnographic and scientific significance now at the Danish National Museum in Copenhagen. Olufsen was fluent in Russian and Usbegic, so he was able to conduct his own interviews with natives, employing only a Tajik interpreter with whom he conversed in Ottoman Turkish. In Bokhara the travellers "were welcomed as guests" by the Emir, lengthening their stay, with the result that the present study "can be used as a work of reference on the details of the region's architecture, archaeology, customs, religions, traditional costume, and for its profuse illustration from photographs of ethnographic and handcrafted pieces, monuments and local peoples" (Gorshenina, Explorateurs en Asie Centrale. Quite a fragile production, the thin cloth, heavy text-block, and large folding map all contributing to the frail condition of copies usually encountered, this, lightly and skilfully restored, is a very superior copy, and very uncommon indeed inscribed.

        The Sensitive Plant

London: Heinemann 1911. 128pp. circa 1911 Black-stamped green cloth cover, decorated by Robinson; the cover is a bit discoloured on the rear panel. Some staining for the fore-edge, and light stain to the base of the prelims. The inside is bright and very pretty, illustrated throughout in colour, both in 18 full-page tissue-protected tipped-in plates and in-text illustrations, and in black-and-white line drawings. Large text, one stanza on each page, is accompanied by a delicate little image. The jacket has some chipx and loss to the head and tail of the spine and the corners, nevertheless a very attractive book. A previous bookseller has noted that this is the 'First Robinson Edition [1911]' I'm not sure about this. There is a version of this edition where the blocking to the gilt cloth is in gilt, so my suspicion is that these may be the sheets of the first edition, but a slightly later issue where the stamping has been downgraded to a dark ink rather thann gilt. Still with it's largely complete jacket, which has kept the boards fresh. . Very Good. Decorative Cloth. 1911. 4to..

THE DOOR IN THE WALL. Illustrated with Photogravures from Photographs by Alvin Langdon Coburn.

New York & London: Mitchell Kennerley, 1911. First ed. Coburn, Alvin Langdon. Folio, (iv), 153, (i) pp., with 10 tipped-in hand-pulled photogravure plates printed under the supervision of Coburn. Newly bound in linen-backed paper over boards, with the original titling in facsimile on the upper board, and printed paper spine label. The gravure plates are rich in tone and have left transfers on the opposing page as is usually found. The original front free endpaper and half-title page show a mottle pattern from an early inlaid printed item, and there is an occasional spot of foxing to a blank margin. Otherwise, this a very good copy on French hand made paper with types and decorations designed by Frederic W. Goudy and set by Bertha S. Goudy. There were 600 copies of this book printed but only approx. 300 have the full complement of hand-pulled photogravures, the others are either lacking plates or were completed with plates printed by aquatone, a halftone process. This copy is one of the three hundred that contains all plates in hand-pulled photogravure. THE TRUTHFUL LENS #184.

1911. London: Frederick Warne and Co., 1911. Original light brown paper boards with arched pictorial onlay. First Edition of these adventures of Timmy Tiptoes (and his wife Goody), grey squirrels trying to get nuts collected and stored up for the oncoming winter. Timmy is wrongly accused of stealing other squirrels' nuts and is thrown through a tree-hole into his and Goody's nut storehouse -- where he gets sidetracked and eats so many of the nuts that he becomes too fat to get out. The presence of chipmunks and a bear in this tale have led to speculation that the author had American children in mind when she wrote and illustrated this book.~Customers could buy TIMMY TIPTOES either in light brown or dark green paper boards, priced at 1/-, or in decorated cloth, at 1/6. This copy is in the light brown paper boards and is near-fine, with only the merest hint of wear at a couple of corners -- highly-desirable condition for fragile paper-covered boards intended for children's use. Linder pp 208-209 and p. 429; Quinby 20. Housed in a magnificent clamshell case that reproduces the pictorial front cover onlay.

Twelve Large Hand-Colored Photographs of Southern California Scenes

Pasadena, California. 1911. Twelve large hand colored gelatin silver photographs. The images measure between 2.5" x 6" and 6" x 8". Each is mounted (or double-mounted) and housed in a fine thick-paper portfolio (measuring between 5.5" x 11" and 11" x 14"), several with an Arts and Crafts style printed emblem that reads: "California" on the front flap. The photos are fine but with some offsetting to the folders. All or most are of Southern California scenes, mostly of Mission San Gabriel and San Juan Capistrano Mission. Other identified subjects are The Old Mill (three miles from the Mission San Gabriel) and San Fernando Mission. Most are Signed on the paper mounts in pencil by: "Fredk. W. Martin," three are Signed in the image in watercolor by the artist: "M. Hulbert." Several are dated 1911. It is likely that several images were also hand watercolored by Martin's wife, a watercolor artist, who began hand-coloring his photographs in 1911. The images are uniformly fine, handsome and pleasing images, presumably sold as souvenirs, from the heights of the Arts and Craft Renaissance in Pasadena. A pleasing collection of images. .

Gesellschaft Der Bibliophilen, Weimar 1911 Halbleder/ Hartkarton Sehr gut 250 Exemplare, hier Nr. 23. 33 x 43 Cm. 2,4 Kg. +++ Stichwörter: Bibliophilie Nordische Literatur Theater Vorzugsausgabe Versand D: 5,50 EUR Bibliophilie Nordische Literatur Theater Vorzugsausgabe

London & Philadelphia: William Heinemann & J. B Lippincott Co., (1911). A quarto bound in original full limp morocco with elaborate design on the upper cover and spine in gilt. Top edge gilt. Eighteen tipped-in color plates by Charles Robinson as well as many vignettes in halftone.A most unusual format for this title, seemingly a publisher's deluxe binding. Dark leather is prone to fading and this copy has had some professional color restoration and the head of the spine is chipped. Still a most attractive copy of a very rare binding for this title.

        A Gallery of Girls

The Century Co., NY, 1911. Near Fine with No dust jacket as issued. First Printing. Hard Cover Publisher's full green cloth, color paste-down on cover. Illustrated with color paste-down on cover, illustrated title page, 39 gorgeous, full-page, full-color plates by Coles Phillips, and 39 cameo B drawings on pages facing the color plates. Printed on thick, glossy stock. Clarence Coles Phillips (1880 -1927) was an American artist and illustrator. He is known for his stylish images of women and a signature use of negative space in the paintings he created for advertisements and the covers of popular magazines. In 1907, Phillips met with J. A. Mitchell, the publisher of Life magazine, and was hired onto its staff at the age of twenty-six. Phillips would be associated with the magazine throughout his life. The work of Phillips quickly became popular with the Life readers. In May 1908, he created a cover for the magazine that featured his first "fadeaway girl" design with a figure whose clothing matched, and disappeared into, the background. Phillips developed this idea in many subsequent covers. Phillips' use of negative space allowed the viewer to "fill-in" the image; it also reduced printing costs for the magazine, as "the novelty of the technique and the striking design qualities masked the fact that Life was getting by with single color or two-color covers in a day when full-color covers were de rigueur for the better magazines". Phillips worked in watercolor and always painted from life; according to his biographer, Michael Schau, "he refused to work from photographs or to use the pantograph." Phillips produced cover art for other national magazines besides Life, including Good Housekeeping, which for two years (beginning in July 1912) made him their sole cover artist. Phillips also created many advertising images for makers of women's clothing, and other advertisers. His series depicting women wearing Holeproof Hosiery products was considered daring for its time. Head, heel and corners very lightly worn, unmarked, tight, square, and clean. All illustrations in perfect condition, bright and clear. NEAR FINE. Color Plates. 4to 11" - 13" tall. (87) pp
