        Sensitive Plant, The

1911. One of the Most Sumptuous Gift Volumes of the Year"Publisher's 'Deluxe' Binding"The Cover Design is a Thing of Beauty"[ROBINSON, Charles]. SHELLEY, Percy Bysshe. The Sensitive Plant. Introduction by Edmund Gosse. Illustrations by Charles Robinson. London / Philadelphia: William Heinemann / J.B. Lippincott Co., [1911]. First U.K. Robinson-illustrated Deluxe edition, a Heinemann "Xmas Art Book" that originally sold for 15 shillings. Quarto (10 3/8 x 7 3/4 in; 264 x 195 mm.). xii, [4], 17-127, [1] pp. Eighteen full color tipped-in plates, including frontispiece, with captioned tissue guards. Small color, halftone, or black and white (some full page) illustrations to each page. Publisher's 'Deluxe' binding of full vellum over boards, front cover and spine elaborately stamped and lettered in gilt, pictorial end-papers, top edge gilt. In the scarce original pictorial dust jacket with just some very minor rubbing at extremities. Small, neat and inoffensive ink stamped signature on half-title and title-page. Housed in the original green cardboard slipcase with the color illustration from page 61 on front panel. A tight, bright, and fine copy of this generously produced volume."No more tastefully illustrated book of verse could be desired than the elaborately artistic edition of Shelley's " Sensitive Plant,"edited by Mr. Edmund Gosse, illustrated with much richness of coloring and gracefulness of design by Mr. Charles Robinson, and imported by the Lippincott Co. Mr. Gosse's introduction throws new light on the " Lady, the wonder of her kind," who played the part of "an Eve in this Eden " where grew the sensitive plant. Drawing upon Medwin's notes to a never-published second edition of his life of the poet, he tells us that this paragon of her sex was a certain Countess of Mountcashell, an Irish lady about fifty years of age, of sufficient unconventionality to be welcomed by Shelley and his company as a congenial spirit. The notes on this lady and the editor's gleaning of facts concerning the mimosa pudica, or sensitive plant, celebrated bythe poet, are interesting. The illustrations, large and small, accompanying the slender thread of text, form the conspicuous feature of the book, and make it one of the most sumptuous gift volumes of the year. The cover design is a thing of beauty..."(The Dial, December 1911). "This book... with... supplements in colour in addition to page designs by the artist is sumptuous in effect" (The International Studio, January 1912).

HILL TOWNS OF ITALY; with PLAIN TOWNS OF ITALY - The Cities of Old Venetia [Two volumes, finely bound by the Rowfant Bindery]

Houghton Miffin, Boston 1911 - "Hill Towns" was originally published in 1903. This copy is a later printing, available from Houghton Miffin contemporaneously with the 1911 first edition of the author's "Plain Towns." The pair of volumes are offered as a set, in matching fine bindings: contemporary three-quarters bindings of navy blue crushed levant morocco over marbled paper covered boards, with four raised bands on the spines. The titles and author's names are lettered in gilt between the upper and lower pairs of bands, in the larger space at the center, there are extraordinary pictorial onlays in four shades of tan and brown leathers. The high quality of these bindings, brilliantly executed using the finest materials is confirmed by the stamped identification of the Rowfant Bindery on the verso of each front free endpaper. This renowned firm had roots in the project initiated by Robert Hoe and members of the Grolier Club in New York, unhappy with the woeful state of the art of fine binding in America, to establish the Club Bindery in an attempt to make available to Grolier Club members luxury bookbindings that could rival those crafted by the European binders. Several English and French-trained binders were brought to New York to begin work around1895. In 1897, Robert Hoe was instrumental in bringing Leon Maillard to the bindery from France. The temperamental Maillard turned his exceptional finishing skills to the production of wonderful and expensive bindings for Hoe and other collectors. The Club Bindery was dissolved in 1909, after Hoe's death. The staff was drawn to Cleveland by the prospect of working for the active collector-members of that city's Rowfant Club. (The tools of the Club Bindery were sold to another firm in New York as part of the Hoe estate in 1912). The designer and finisher from the Rowfant Bindery responsible for these matched bindings has based the pictorial onlays on the designs of the handsome original cloth bindings in which these books appeared from the publisher. [The earlier "Hill Towns" had a decorative cloth binding designed by Adrian Iorio, an assistant to Will H. Bradley. The later "Plain Towns" was a product of the Decorative Designers studio]. The masterly vignette on the "Hill Towns" spine depicts a typical building of the region, in onlays of tan and two shades of brown, with outlines in black. A sense of the building's setting on a hill is neatly conveyed by the simple geometric sweep of the wall and path leading to the door. The scene on the spine of the "Plain Towns" uses a similar palette, and shows vernacular buildings with their tile roofs in two shades of tan, glimpsed through poplar trees with a hill behind, using two shades of brown. This pair of bindings are executed in three-quarters morocco, and may not have been commissioned by a member of the Rowant Club -- (there is no groundhog candlestick device, just the tiny letters "ROWFANT BINDERY" stamped at the upper corner of the verso of each front free endpaper). Most likely, this handsome pair represent a relatively scarce subset of the 1051 Rowfant bindings -- in which the best American binders of their time were attempting to save the Rowfant Binders firm with superior commercial work to supplement the commissions from Rowfant Club members. Alas, in 1914, the firm's brief existence came to an end, less than five years after its Cleveland incarnation opened. Some of the staff including Gaston Pilon formed their own firm as Book-lover's Bindery in Cleveland, and thus struggled along for four more difficult years. Some of that staff subsequently moved back to New York and plied their trade as "The French Binders." The brilliant finisher, Leon Maillard, who learned his trade from his father Charles Maillard in Paris at Cuzin's, and then worked with Gruel and as master finisher with Marius Michel before Robert Hoe lured him to New York to be master finisher for the Club Bindery, was known as sullen and moody, even when things were going well.         The Lair of the White Worm

London: William Rider and Son, 1911.. FIRST EDITION. PRE-PUBLICATION PRESENTATION COPY TO A CLOSE FRIEND OF THE AUTHOR. Octavo, pp.viii; 324; 325-8, adverts; 16, catalogue. Illustrated with 6 coloured plates by Pamela Colman Smith, 'Contents' leaf is a cancel. Publisher's cloth with gilt decorated titles to spine and front board. Some foxing, spine lightly sunned, otherwise a crisp, fine copy. This particular example was sent by Stoker's publisher (with their 'Presentation' stamp to title) to his close friend James Cruickshank, with the author's covering handwritten letter affixed to flyleaf; 'My dear Cruickshank / I hope you will like The Lair of The White / Worm which the publishers (W.Rider & Son) / sent herewith. It comes out on 7th. I shall / be glad to know what you thought of it. Warmest / rememberances to all / love (?) / Bram Stoker. on Author's personal notepaper, dated 3/11/11. James Cruickshank was a landowner and proprietor of the Kilmarnock Arms Hotel, Cruden Bay, in the Scottish Highlands, where Bram Stoker first stayed in 1894. This rugged coastal retreat became a second home for the author and Cruden Bay would play a prominent part in much of his subsequent fiction; written in the year of his first visit 'The Watter's Mou' is a strange melodrama about smuggling in the harbour town during the first half of the nineteenth century; Stoker name-drops his friend 'James Cruickshank of the Kilmarnock Arms', seen with a sinister companion, described as 'an elderly man with a bald head, keen eyes, a ragged grey beard, a hooked nose and an evil smile'. His next novel 'The Mystery of the Sea', features the landing at Cruden Bay of a grisly procession of wraiths from ships wrecked on the treacherous jagged Scaurs - the hazardous rock range piercing the water along the shoreline. Overlooking the bay are the famous clifftop ruins of Slains Castle, built by the 9th Earl of Erroll (Cruden Bay was also known as Port Erroll until the '30s). Long abandoned, although inhabited and imposing at the time of Stoker's residence, the Baronial mansion and its tower have commonly been cited as an inspiration for the 1897 novel Dracula, the next book written by Stoker at his chosen haven of tranquillity. A lesser-known fact is that the husband of Diana, Countess of Erroll, had an ancestor who married into the family of Drakula, ruler of Walachia, Rumania, upon which Stoker's character is based. A remarkable association, and certainly a strong contender for most significant copy of this title; several copies were presented by the publisher, presumably to a list on the author's behalf, yet we are unable to locate any inscribed copy at auction and note just two others with a similar accompanying letter from the author (1978 and 2016).

        The Tale of Timmy Tiptoes.

London: Frederick Warne & Co.,, 1911. Sextodecimo. Original green boards, spine and front board lettered in white, pictorial label with illustration to front cover, pictorial endpapers. 27 colour plates. Spine rolled, spine ends a little torn, tips very slightly worn, some faint marks to contents. An excellent copy. First edition. The first two printings are believed to be identical. The story of Timmy and Goody Tiptoes is the only Beatrix Potter story apparently set in North America - although this is implicit rather than stated anywhere in the book. All the main animal characters are indigenous to North America: grey squirrels, chipmunks and a "large bear", but the waters are muddied somewhat by the presence of Yellowhammers (or Emberiza citrinella, the birds which sing "Little bita bread and-no-cheese!"), whose range includes Europe and much of Asia but not America.

Expl.Nr.120. - Exemplar der Vorzugsausgabe in sehr guter Erhaltung (Einband minimal fleckig, sonst sehr gut). - \"Warum handgebunden? Important Autograph Letter about Franck and "False Genius"

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. A fascinating and important autograph letter from the French composer, organist, pianist, and conductor to an unidentified friend, revealing his opinions on the music of César Franck and on the nature of true and false genius. Writing on February 6, 1911 from Algiers, where five of his operas had been staged that winter, Saint-Saëns begins his letter by mentioning his educational background: "Did I tell you that I was never in the piano class at the Conservatory, where my teacher [Camille-Marie] Stamaty was not a professor?" After recommending piano etudes by Josefy and Phillipp, he goes on to dissuade his correspondent from learning pieces by Franck (who had died in 1890): "Seeing as the music of Franck is causing you so much trouble to learn, then don't learn it - who's forcing you? In general, I find Franck's music as boring as it is worthy... An artist whose work never laughs is not a genius." Franck, according to Saint-Saëns, is one of "a clan of false geniuses who are poisoning our era." This group, in which Saint-Saëns includes artists Pierre Puvis de Chavannes and Auguste Rodin, do not "dare to descend from their pedestals." A rather damning condemnation of a composer for whom he had once advocated, the letter also shows Saint-Saëns' sense of humor, as he finishes: "Now, if I am talking nonsense, keep it to yourself. For I don't know that Michelangelo ever showed much gaiety; but who would dream of calling him boring?"<br style="">On the letterhead of the Excelsior Hotel, Algiers, dated February 6, 1911. 2 pp. Creases, one small tear on the horizontal crease, some wear to the edges, and light toning; overall in very good condition. 8 x 10.5 inches (21 x 27 cm).  Full translation as follows:<br>"My dear friend,  It seems to me that I forgot to talk to you about the piano. Did I tell you that I was never in the piano class at the Conservatory, where my teacher Stamaty was not a professor? I only ever won the organ prize. -- Regarding the way to acquire a brilliant technique, I recommend Josefy's exercises, published by Schirmer in New York; there are also those by Philipp which are excellent (Paris-Durand.) But all these exercises are intended for those who already have talent. For others, there are the old Czerny exercises which are always good.Seeing as the music of Franck is causing you such trouble to learn, then don't learn it - who's forcing you? In general, I find Franck's music as boring as it is worthy; it's like those honest people whose company would put you off from honesty. I was for it when people were unjustly against it, when people were disdaining it, but now that everyone wants to make it a work of genius, I don't [like?] it any more. An artist whose work never laughs is not a genius. César, along with Puvis de Chavannes and Rodin, is one of the clan of false geniuses who are poisoning our era. They are not Homers, Virgils, Beethovens, Mozarts; even Bach knew how to suit the occasion. The true geniuses know that even if they fail, they [will rise again???;] the false do not dare to descend from their pedestals. Now, if I am talking nonsense, keep it to yourself. For I don't know that Michelangelo ever showed much gaiety; but who would dream of calling him boring?Yours, C. St-S"

Modern audiences are well acquainted with Gaston Leroux's infamous Phantom of the Opera, the tale of Erik, a horrifically disfigured man who lives in the underground beneath the Paris Opera House, where his creative genius mingles - and festers - with madness. First published in 1910, the Phantom's obsessive and consuming love for the beautiful young chorus girl Christine has captivated readers, film goers and musical theater fanatics for over 100 years. The Phantom of the Opera has become the source for numerous adaptations, including the 1925 film starring Lon Chaney and Andrew Lloyd Webber's Tony Award-winning musical.
