[TSIOLKOVSKY DEFENDING HIS IDEAS] Zashchita aeronata [i e The Defence of the Aeronat]

Kaluga: Izdaniye avtora; E.T. Archangelskaya, 1911. 12 pp.: ill., photos. Original illustrated wrappers. Fine. Very rare pre-revolutionary brochure in mint condition. Konstantin Tsiolkovsky (1857-1935) is a man whose ideas made the space exploration possible. In the 1910s he has already proven that it's not impossible to send some kind of operated apparatus into space, also he calculated the speed and conditions of such travel. His ideas were too ahead of their time and he met a little support. He was producing different projects of aerostats, aeronats and dirigibles trying to find the one that would fit his calculations. He had to publish the project using his own money in his native town of Kaluga and send brochures out to scientific societies and individual scientists. This brochure is one of the early projects of Tsiolkovsky. In this brochure Tsiolkovsky defended his ideas. He gave concrete examples of how his works didn't meet public's approval but 2-3 years later different physicists were proving him right. He continued to promote his version of aeronat made of metal. In this book he provided specific technical and engineering characteristics of his space vehicle.

At the Back of the North Wind

Blackie, UK 1911 - 1st Edition Thus 1911. Twelve Full page colour illustrations by Frank C Pape and seventy six black and white drawings. This new edition is the first thus with Pape's colour plates keeping Arthur Hughe's illustrations in the text. A wonderful and un-common edition. Hardback, publisher’s blue cloth with orange, blue and white designs to upper board and spine, colour onlay to upper board, top edges coloured, 12 colour plates (on coated paper), 76 in-text drawings, 391 pages. Approximate size 8 x 5.4 inches (20.3 x 13.7 cm). Printed by Blackie & Son, Glasgow.George MacDonald’s celebrated fantasy At the Back of the North Wind was first published in book form in 1871, with 76 haunting illustrations by Arthur Hughes (who would also go on to illustrate MacDonald’s The Princess and the Goblin, published the following year, in 1872). The story – which revolves around a boy named Diamond and his adventures with the North Wind – includes the fairy tale Little Daylight, subsequently also published as an independent work, or added to other collections of MacDonald’s fairy tales. This particular copy is an early reissue of Blackie and Son’s new edition of 1911, featuring all 76 of Hughes’ line drawings from the 1871 book – including his famous depictions of the North Wind, in Pre-Raphaelite style – plus twelve delicate colour plates by Frank Pape. The Art Nouveau binding is typical of Blackie in this period, complete with stylized Glasgow rose. A beautifully illustrated book – here with the contents very well preserved for age. Book is very good+ with quite bright gilt decorative giltwork. Edges lighty rubbed more so at the spine tips. Contents good. Plates all present but not all paginated in the oorrect places. Plates in very good order. The very rare wrapper is good++ and quite bright. Small loss to spine tips, edges and corners. Edges rubbed, nicked and with a few small closed tears. Wrapper age toned.         Album collection of original photographs. Tripoli, Ain-Zara, Henni, Sidi Mesri, Sidi Abdul-Gelil, etc., Nov. 1911-June 1912.

1911. Oblong 8vo (225 x 162 mm). 156 vintage black-and-white prints, various formats, mounted on sturdy green scrapbook leaves, all captioned by a contemporary Italian hand. Original tan cloth with "Album" printed on front cover. Intriguing photo collection, apparently assembled by one of the ten thousands of Italian soldiers that poured into Libya in November 1911. Italy had declared its war on the Ottoman empire in September 1911, when the young kingdom was wracked with economic and social problems and colonial expansion seemed the answer. The largely unknown north-African country was fancifully depicted as rich in minerals, well-watered, and with a population hostile to the Ottoman Empire and friendly to the Italians. While the invasion of Libya was planned as little more than a "military walk", the operation soon encountered strong resistance from the local population, and when Arab cavalry nearly annihilated the Italian expeditionary corps in October, the troops were quickly enlarged to 100,000 men. The "Guerra di Libia", a significant precursor of WWI, is noted for numerous technological advances in warfare, notably the use of armoured cars and airplanes, often regarded as the earliest examples of aerial warfare: Italian dirigibles and Blériot-type planes performed reconnaissance missions and bombed Turkish positions. In the Treaty of Ouchy, signed on 18 October 1912, the Ottoman Empire surrendered Tripolitania, Fezzan, and Cyrenaica to Italy. - The present collection shows Italian troops in their positions, at camps and fortinos, and with their ordnance, horses, and "war dogs", as well as Eritrean Ascari soldiers, Meharists on camels, the local Arab population (as well as local Jews, Sudanese, etc.), bedouins, Tripoli street and market scenes, the port of Tripoli, views of the city, oases, desert expeditions, funerals, the railway, etc. No armoured vehicles are visible, but many army automobiles and - at the distance, a mere speck near the horizon - "in alto un dirigibile" (over the Tripoli port, March 1912). - Photos variously show strong fading or good contrast, frequently with some glue shading. Altogether complete and well-preserved.

New Haven: Yale University Press, 1911. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good binding. Printed in a limitation of 250 copies, of which this is #94, these three chunky quartos are historian Max Farrand's effort to present in toto all of the notes and minutes of the 1787 Federal Convention, which met in secret over nearly four months from May, 1787 until September 17 of that year. This is the most comprehensive record of what can be argued was the most important gathering the our nation's history. Farrand's efforts in this compilation are so significant that the George Washington University School of Law held, in 2011, a symposium "Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Farrand's Records of the Federal Convention". A fourth volumes was published 26 years later, in 1937. A very good set, in the publisher's 1/4 vellum and paper-covered boards. Very Good binding.

1911. Zusammen 6¼ SS. auf 4 Bll. Gr.-4to. (a. d. Br. v. 3. III. 1913). (Bern, 1. XII. [1914]).

        Jennie Gerhardt

Harper & Brothers, New York and London 1911 - 433 pages with frontispiece. Small octavo (7 1/2" x 5 1/4") bound in original publisher's blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine and cover with black design in original jacket. First edition in first state binding and second state text. Jennie Gerhardt was Theodore Dreiser's second novel and his first true commercial success. Today it is generally regarded as one of his three best novels, along with Sister Carrie and An American Tragedy. As submitted to Harper and Brothers in 1911, Jennie Gerhardt was a powerful study of a woman tragically compromised by birth and fate. Harpers agreed to publish the book but was nervous about its subject matter and moral stance. Jennie has an illegitimate child by one man and lives out of wedlock with another - but Dreiser does not condemn her for her behavior. As a requirement for publication, Harpers insisted on cutting and revising the text. Although Dreiser fought against many of the cuts and succeeded in restoring some material, Harpers shortened the text by 16,000 words and completely revised its style and tone. These changes ultimately transformed Jennie Gerhardt from a blunt, carefully documented work of social realism to a touching love story merely set against a social background. Passages critical of organized religion and of the institution of marriage were reduced and altered. Perhaps most important, Jennie's point of view - her innate romantic mysticism - was largely edited out of the text. As a consequence, the central dialectic of the novel was skewed and the narrative thrown out of balance. Condition: Cloth spine lightly sunned with some rubbing, previous owner's signatures to front blank and rear paste down. Jacket panels and spine toned and chipped, tears at jacket joints and edges else a very good copy in about a very good infrequently found jacket. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Haras du Quesnay à M. W. K. Vanderbilt. Juillet 1911 [ Edition originale ]

[Broadsides]: Two Broadsides Promoting Excursions of the Willing Workers Club

New York: Willing Workers Club / Press of The New York Age [and] Willing Workers Club / John P. Wharton Electric Power Printer. 1911 and 1915. Two broadsides. Measuring 6" x 9.25" and 9" x 12". Each with a vignette and several typefaces. Paper of each is toned, small folds, tears or nicks at extremities, small old collection stamp on the backs, otherwise each is near fine. Two broadsides for excursions of The Boyer Lodge, one of the oldest African-American "Prince Hall Lodges" in America, which celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2012. The smaller and earlier of the two broadsides was printed in 1911 at the press of The New York Age at 247 W. 46th St. The Age was the most prominent African-American periodical of the time, closely associated with the careers of T. Thomas Fortune and Booker T. Washington. The Willing Workers Club was a sub-group of the Lodge, here described as traveling as a group to Locust Grove the "...most beautiful grove on Long Island Sound and the largest barge afloat, the Starina, have been engaged. Music will be furnished by the famous New Amsterdam Orchestra."By 1915, the 5th Annual Excursion, it had become a successful and popular annual recreational activity, with the club promoting the jaunt to Forest View Grove on the Hudson. This larger broadside, printed by John P. Wharton, Electric Power Printer at 447 Lenox Avenue, has a small woodcut illustration of a side-wheeler steamship. It claims: "...Our many friends who have gone with us before well remember our beautiful sails and lovely time... Music by the Craftmen's Band, J.R. Borroughs Leader... ." Both broadsides list Chairman William M. Stokes, along with several other committee members and information on ticket sales. Interesting view of African-American Masonry, recreation and transportation history ephemera from the early part of the 20th Century. OCLC locates no copies of either broadside. .

Paris, s.é., 1911. 1 vol. (204 x 135 mm)de 64 pp., broché. Edition originale. ».
