[Part 1 of] The Golden Bough: The Magic Art and the Evolution of Kings.

London: Macmillan and Co, Limited,, 1911. Third edition. 2 volumes, octavo. Original dark green cloth, titles gilt to spines, large rectangular gilt block of mistletoe tracery on front boards. With the typographical dust jackets. Engraved frontispiece with tissue guard to Volume I. Volume 2 with some dampstaining to rear board and light cockling to front joint, free endpapers slightly tanned. A very good copy in bright jackets with vertical creases where they were once folded inside the books. Part 1 of the definitive third edition of Frazer's classic work of social anthropology. With the author's clipped signature dated 19 February 1921 mounted to both front pastedowns. First published as a two-volume work in 1890 the Golden Bough was expanded to 12 volumes in the third edition (a supplementary thirteenth volume, entitled Aftermath, was published in 1936). "Frazer's true subject is nothing less than humanity's long upward struggle towards an understanding of itself and the world. In Frazer's view that movement towards the light began in earliest times with the priest?king employing magic to compel the gods to do his bidding, followed by a religious stage in which humans admit their powerlessness and now beseech rather than command the gods. Thus for Frazer religion is a necessary stage in mental evolution, but one that is based on mistaken premisses; it has now in turn been superseded by a world-view based on rationality: positive science. In focusing on the pattern of the dying and reviving god that lay at the heart of the religions of the ancient Mediterranean, while never mentioning Christianity, Frazer was more than a little disingenuous. In truth he was engaged all the while in a covert campaign against religion in general and Christianity in particular and may perhaps be seen, along with H. G. Wells, as the most important exponent of secularism in the twentieth century" (ODNB). Scarce with signature.

The Isolation of an Ion, a Precision Measurement of its Charge, and the Correction of Stokes's Law" in The Physical Review, Volume 32, Number 4, January - June 1911, pp. 349-397

BOUND FIRST EDITION OF MILLIKAN'S FIRST COMPREHENSIVE ACCOUNT OF HIS FAMOUS OIL-DROPLET EXPERIMENTS. With this experiment, Millikan established the electron as the fundamental unit of charge. Writing nearly a hundred years later, the historian of science Robert Crease observed: "Robert Millikan's oil drop experiments can leave no-one in doubt that electrical charge is quantized and that modern physics is real, observable, and true" (Crease, Robert. Physics World, 2002, p. 19). The Nobel Prize in Physics 1923 was awarded to Robert A. Millikan "for his work on the elementary charge of electricity and on the photoelectric effect". By modifying Wilson's cloud-chamber technique and substituting oil for water. Millikan was able to observe individual charged droplets of oil for hours at a time, measuring changes in their velocity and determining from his measurements that the electrical charge on any drop was always an integral multiple of e = 1.60 x 10-19 coulomb. Late in 1909 Millikan greatly improved the drop method by substituting oil for water. Because of the relatively low volatility of this liquid, he could measure the rise and fall of the drops for up to four and a half hours. Spraying the chamber with radium radiation, he could change the charge on a single drop at will. His overall results decisively confirmed the integral-multiple values of the total charge. As for the determination of e itself, Millikan found that Stoke's law was inadequate for his experimental circumstances because the size of the drops was comparable with the mean free path of the air. Using the so-called Stokes-Cunningham version of the law, which took this condition into account, by late 1910 he had computed a charge for e of 4, 891 x 10-10 e.s.u. (DSB Vol. 9 p. 396). Not only had Millikan found the value of the charge on the electron, but he had provided convincing evidence that all electrical charge is some integer multiple of an elementary charge e, that the charge was always an integral multiple of an irreproducible value. ALSO INCLUDED: First edition of Child's Law. "First proposed by Clement D. Child in 1911, Child's Law states that the space-charge limited current (SCLC) in a plane-parallel vacuum diode varies directly as the three-halves power of the anode voltage Va and inversely as the square of the distance d separating the cathode and the anode" (pp. 492-511). CONDITION & DETAILS: Lancaster, American Institute of Physics. 4to. 10 x 7 inches (250 x 150mm). 645 pages. Pages 637-634 of the index at the rear missing; no papers are impacted. Ex-libris bearing only an illustrated 'Harvey Mudd College Library' plate on the pastedown; faint stamp on the rear of the title page and miniscule gilt 'Harvey Mudd College' at the foot of the spine. Tightly, cleanly, and solidly bound in brown cloth, gilt-lettered at the spine. Bright and clean throughout. Very Good ++.

The Mariner's Mirror; The Quarterly Journal of the Society for Nautical Research

02 - Greenwich - The Society for Nautical Research, 1911 Book. Fine. Hardcover. 88 volumes, bound as 59, of theinternational journal of the Society for Nautical Research; an exceptional private run from 1911-2003. The journal has been published since 1911, and is recognised as the leading journal for its subject of naval and maritime history. The European Reference Index for the Humanitiesclassifies itas an INT1 journal (the highest),meaning it enjoys internationally recognised significanceand influence among scholars and esearchers, and is regularly cited by academics all over the world. Covering all periods from pre-hisory to the modern world, this represents an unparalled resource of information on maritime and naval matters. Each volume is replete with illustrations, often including maps, paintings, photographs, and tables. Fold-out illustrations can be found in volumes 4, 5, 11, 14, 16, 17, 20, 18, 22, 25, 26,36, 54, 59, 63, 66, 67, 68, and 70. Many of the early volumes include question and answer sections from readers appended. Many issues are demarcated into their separate quarterly parts, which are bound together with their separate title pages. Volumes 22 and 87/88 have the original wrappers of these quarterly sections bound in. Volumes 75/6 and 77/8 have adverts from the publisher bound in. In the case of 75/76 they are seperately paginated. As a previously private collection, this set is free from any library markings; a run of this length in this unmarked condition is very scarce indeed. Volumes 1-11, 13-14, and 16 are Kraus reprints in the original cloth. Volumes 12 and 15 are the original works in various bindings. Volumes 17-18 and 25-88 are bound in pairs, and along with the single volumes are in the original publisher's cloth. The exceptions are volumes 19, 21, and 24, which are in half morocco and like volumes 12 and 15 are clearly of different provenance. Volume 'XXXVI' is also in a subtly different cloth binding, though it still appears original. Nearly a century's worth of study into maritime and naval affairs, handsomely presented in a remarkably uniform and attractive run. Condition: Volumes 1-11, 13-14, & 16 are Kraus reprints in full cloth. Volume 15 is in full morocco. The 1933, 35, and 38 volumes are in half morocco. All other volumes are in the original cloth with paper covered boards. The Kraus reprints are externally excellent, with almost no discernable wear, and internally are clean and bright and firmly bound. Volume 12 is externally smart though with a little general wear and some light marking to the boards. It has a contemporary ink inscription to the front free endpaper. It is somewhat spotted for the first and last few pages as normal, and firmly bound. Volume15 is a litle rubbed at the extremities and head and tail of the spine. Internally it is mildly age toned but otherwise clean and firmly bound. The 1933, 35, and 38 volumes are externally smart, though with some light rubbing at the extremities and to the spine. The 1933 volume has some small damage to the spine, affecting the gilt date. Internally they are a little more age toned but generally clean, and firmly bound. Their foredges are a little spotted. Of the other volumes, they are mostly externally very smart indeed. Volume 22 has a spotted foredge. Volumes 35 and 45/6 have some marking to their boards. Internally, generally remarkably clean and bright. Volume 20 has some spotting internally. Volumes 87/88 have water damage from page 382 onwards. All are firmly bound. Krauss reprints overall: FINE. Volume 12 overall: VERY GOOD. Volume 15 overall: VERY GOOD. 1933,35,38 volumes overall: VERY GOOD INDEED. All other volumes: NEAR FINE.

Surprisingly, there was hardly any substantial scientific literature in the Russian language available on the subject, which led Urusov to a decision to produce the present work. His initial idea was to simply translate a popular German work titled "Das Buch vom Pferde" by Carl Wrangel, which provided information on all the aspects of horse care, breeding and racing. As he progressed with his work, Urusov started to realize that German text was not be fully applicable in the conditions of Russian climate, local soil and infrastructure. The Urusov's work proved to be extremely successful and useful exactly because the author applied his experience and knowledge and adapted the text to the local conditions and specificity of the Russian breeds.         Henry Bing: Mona Lisa II (Originalzeichnung)

[Attributes: Signed Copy]
