Photo Album]: The Goings on at Briarcliff College

New York 1911 - Oblong quarto. Measuring 10" x 12". Black textured cloth over paper boards. Contains 87 sepia toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 2" x 3" and 5" x 7", without captions. Album is very good with some edgewear with near fine photographs.A photo album kept by an unnamed woman while she was attending Briarcliff College in Briarcliff Manor, New York from 1910 to 1911. Briarcliff College was originally founded as Mrs. Dow's School for Girls in 1903 at Briarcliff Lodge and by 1933 had become a junior college. The album shows the year of 1910 to 1911 with photos of the women participating in a cooking class, various theatrical performances, and posing around the campus. The theater was a huge part of the women's time at the college and featured many historic reenactments using Native American scenes and Middle Eastern costumes. One photo shows the women in various costumes, some of them dressed as men, clowns, and one in black face, with a hand drawn poster that says "Roasted Puppies" in the background. The women are also shown enjoying the seasons from ice skating in winter to picnicking in spring. One photo displays the women as a group playing mandolins and guitars. Another photo shows a small group of girls sitting in a field with rifles in the foreground.A nice collection of photographs representing a women's college in 1910 displaying the creativity and quirkiness of its students.

Das Graphische Werk Emil Noldes bis 1910

Julius Bard. Hardcover. Berlin, 1911. Quarto, 140 pp. The first volume in the series. Original woodcuts throughout. Number 391 of an edition of 435. A very good minus copy with excellent, bright contents. Chip to paper at head of spine of about 1/2 x 1.5 inches, affecting the lettering at the end of the title. Very tiny creases to corners of some upper pages, closed tear to outer paper on the lower portion of the rear outer hinge of the spine, very faint intermittent foxing to contents. Nolde married Danish actress Ada Vilstrup in 1902 and moved to Berlin, where he would meet collector Gustav Schiefler and artist Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, both of whom would advocate his work later in life. He spent a brief time between 1906-1907 as a member of the revolutionary expressionist group Die Brucke (The Bridge), and as a member of the Berlin Secession in 1908-1910, but he eventually left or was expelled from both of these groups - foreshadowing of the difficulty Nolde had maintaining relationships with the organizations to which he belonged. He had achieved some fame by this time and exhibited with Kandinsky's Der Blaue Reiter group in 1912, supporting himself through his art. This book contains beautiful Expressionist woodcuts by Nolde. A very nice example. Please contact us for additional pictures or information. . Very Good. 1911. First Edition.

Pandora.

Barrie. [Illustrated by Arthur Rackham].

Lacci in seta. First edition, 100 copies, good copy. Very rare. Rif. Bibl.: Latimore & Haskell, Arthur Rackham: A Bibliography, p. 39. Riall p. 113.

        The Tale of Timmy Tiptoes.

London: Frederick Warne & Co., 1911 - Sextodecimo. Original green boards, spine and front board lettered in white, pictorial label with illustration to front cover, pictorial endpapers. Contemporary gift inscription to front free endpaper. Boards gently bowed, contents a little cockled. An excellent copy. 27 colour plates. First edition. The first two printings are believed to be identical. The story of Timmy and Goody Tiptoes is the only Beatrix Potter story apparently set in North America - although this is implicit rather than stated anywhere in the book. All the main animal characters are indigenous to North America: grey squirrels, chipmunks and a "large bear", but the waters are muddied somewhat by the presence of Yellowhammers (or Emberiza citrinella, the birds which sing "Little bita bread and-no-cheese!"), whose range includes Europe and much of Asia but not America.         A collection of 82 wooden boards carved on both sides with 820 "labels", five to each side, for herbal remedies used by a dispensing pharmacologist.

Provincial southern China, 19th century. - 12,5 x 35 cm. Some occasional light worming, some slight damage affecting the text of 3 boards. Contained in a Chinese leather travelling trunk. Using imperial measures - metric was not used until after the Revolution of 1911 - these receipts are headed with either the title Chung the Celestial at Chuan-Tuan, or Military General the Protector of the People at Chu-Ling-Shan. There are 'labels' for men, women and children, giving the ingredients and name of the remedy pills, potions or powders to "restore youth" and similar purposes. Chinese medicine is of great antiquity and devoid of any outside influence. Legend has it that the Yellow Emperor, Huang Ti, wrote the first treatise on Chinese medicine in 300 BC. In its present form, the Nei Ching, on which most Chinese medical literature is founded, it is thought to date from the third century AD. The Nei Ching holds that "the blood current flows continously in a circle and never stops", anticipating Harvey by centuries. The Chinese materia medica has always been extensive and consists of vegetable, animal, including human, and mineral remedies. There were famous herbals from ancient times, but these ca. 1000 were collected by Li Shih-Chen in the Pen-ts'ao Kang-mu or Great Pharmacopoeia of the 16th Century. It was revised and reprinted many times in 52 volumes and is still authorative. The use of drugs is to restore the harmony of the Ying and Yang, related to the five organs, five planets, and five colours. Western influences did not occur until the 19th century, but today, with the revival of Taoist temples for healing which began to be tolerated again in the 1970s, and the profusion Chinese chemists, acupuncturists and hydrotherapists in the west, the Chinese can be said to have redressed the balance. The troubled history of the 20th century in China has made the survival of such ephemeral documents, and in such quantity, quite remarkable. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
