More ghost stories of an antiquary.

London Edward Arnold 1911 - First edition, 8vo, 24pp. advertisements, contemporary ownership inscriptions to front endpapers, original cloth with title and bat designed blocked in black, some minor marking and edge-wear. The sequel to the author's Ghost Stories (1904), a ghoulish collection of tales primarily designed to be read aloud in the traditional fashion. Montague Rhodes James was a respected specialist in apocryphal writings and medieval manuscript, with an impressive career amongst the dusty halls of academia, not least as director of the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, administrator for King's College and Provost of Eton. However, he is primarily remembered for ghost stories such as these, with their wonderfully eerie atmosphere and malignant spirits. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

THE HAMPDENSHIRE WONDER. Signed By The Author

Sidgwick & Jackson, Ltd, London 1911 - This rarity of science fiction is signed by the author. One of the first novels to involve a Wunderkind. The child in it, Victor Stott, is the son of a famous cricket player. This origin is perhaps a reference to H.G. Well's father Joseph Wells. The novel concerns his progress from infant to almost preternaturally brilliant child. Victor Stott is subtly deformed to allow for his powerful brain. Bound in the preferred dark green boards with bold gilt spine lettering. Author's second novel. A very good plus to near fine book with the original dust jacket, also near fine with shallow chipping at spine crown. A very bright example of this rare jacket [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Contains 87 sepia toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 2" x 3" and 5" x 7", without captions. Album is very good with some edgewear with near fine photographs.A photo album kept by an unnamed woman while she was attending Briarcliff College in Briarcliff Manor, New York from 1910 to 1911. The album shows the year of 1910 to 1911 with photos of the women participating in a cooking class, various theatrical performances, and posing around the campus. The theater was a huge part of the women's time at the college and featured many historic reenactments using Native American scenes and Middle Eastern costumes. One photo shows the women in various costumes, some of them dressed as men, clowns, and one in black face, with a hand drawn poster that says "Roasted Puppies" in the background. The women are also shown enjoying the seasons from ice skating in winter to picnicking in spring. One photo displays the women as a group playing mandolins and guitars. Another photo shows a small group of girls sitting in a field with rifles in the foreground.A nice collection of photographs representing a women's college in 1910 displaying the creativity and quirkiness of its students.

Das Graphische Werk Emil Noldes bis 1910

Julius Bard. Hardcover. Berlin, 1911. Quarto, 140 pp. The first volume in the series. Original woodcuts throughout. Number 391 of an edition of 435. A very good minus copy with excellent, bright contents. Chip to paper at head of spine of about 1/2 x 1.5 inches, affecting the lettering at the end of the title. Very tiny creases to corners of some upper pages, closed tear to outer paper on the lower portion of the rear outer hinge of the spine, very faint intermittent foxing to contents. Nolde married Danish actress Ada Vilstrup in 1902 and moved to Berlin, where he would meet collector Gustav Schiefler and artist Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, both of whom would advocate his work later in life. He spent a brief time between 1906-1907 as a member of the revolutionary expressionist group Die Brucke (The Bridge), and as a member of the Berlin Secession in 1908-1910, but he eventually left or was expelled from both of these groups - foreshadowing of the difficulty Nolde had maintaining relationships with the organizations to which he belonged. He had achieved some fame by this time and exhibited with Kandinsky's Der Blaue Reiter group in 1912, supporting himself through his art. This book contains beautiful Expressionist woodcuts by Nolde. A very nice example. Please contact us for additional pictures or information. . Very Good. 1911. First Edition.

        Jennie Gerhardt

Harper & Brothers, New York 1911 - 433 pages. Dreiser's second novel. The title character is a poor young woman who has a child by a US Senator who dies soon after. The novel follows the title character as she tries to find love and stability as a single, unwed mother in the post-Victorian era. First edition (first printing) with error on page 22 and the author's full name on the spine. This copy shows mild shelfwear but is lacking the jacket. It is, however, inscribed by Dreiser, 'For Harry Ruby from Theodore Dreiser.' The recipient may be a Jewish American songwriter with that name. Early novels signed by Dreiser are uncommon.
