London Committee of Deputies of Jews
[no publisher], 1908. Good. 9/28/2010. Typescript manuscript. 16pp. String-tied maroon crocodile textured wrappers with hand-titled paper label. Numerous tears and moderate loss to the wraps but with only light toning to the interior pages except for last page which has some creasing, overall very good. This memorandum was prepared by the London Committee of Deputies of Jews, a group formed in the mid-18th Century to safeguard the interests of the Jewish community, and given to Sir Edward Grey, the longest tenured British Foreign Secretary. The memorandum outlines various violations by the Romanian government to the Convention of Paris (1858) and the Treaty of Berlin (1878). It was likely written in reaction to the previous year's Romanian peasants' revolt in which over 10,000 people were killed and the origin of which was falsely blamed on the Jews. A notable document of European prewar Jewish solidarity and reaction to anti-Semitism.

Harry Houdini - The Unmasking of Robert-Houdin - 1908 U.S. first edition published by The Publishers Printing Co. Inscribed by Houdini to the front endpaper in the year of publication: "With compliments of the author Harry Houdini May 19 1908". The book is reasonably firmly bound in the publisher's light brown cloth, lettered and decorated in white and black, the corners and spine ends are bumped, there are small tears to the cloth and the boards are somewhat rubbed and faded with minor marking. The text block is slightly toned, marked and dusty with cracking at points. Houdini's detailed, meticulous and slightly bitter history of magic, bitter in so much that as the title suggests each trick described is one for which Robert-Houdin claimed the credit of invention, and the disillusioned man, who used Houdin's name as the basis of his own stage name, is anxious to re-claim the credit for the true originators. Copies inscribed in the year of publication are uncommon. [Attributes: First Edition]

Zane Grey
UK: Outdoor Publishing, 1908. VG-: page wear to first five pages of text at page edge. Some edge wear to spine cloth. Zane Grey, The Last of the Plainsmen, Outing Publishing Company, 1908, 1st ED., 1st PRINT, original book in a high quality Facsimile dust jacket. Book signed & inscribed by the subject: Charles Jesse "Buffalo" Jones (1/31/1844-10/1/1919 ) to Major Henry T. Buckingham (5/28/1830- 1/25/1916)--fellow Kansas pioneer and Kansas newspaper publisher who participated in the Pike's Peak Gold Rush; Interesting "association copy," for very serious collectors. Jones was 2nd only to Buffalo Bill Cody as a plainsman and was the first game warden of Yellowstone National Park. Wyoming. Richly illustrated book with photos by Zane Grey. Buffalo Jones, was one of the last of the famous plainsmen who troad the trails of the old West. Killing was repulsive to him and the passion of his life was to capture wild beasts alive. In this thrilling story of a hunting trip with Jones, Zane Grey speaks first hand of the great man's courage and prowess. How he roped the ferocious cougar and took it, clawing and spitting, back to camp. How he nearly captured White King, the glorious leader of a herd of wild mustangs. And how the party made camp under the Aurora Borealis and hunted polar wolves. This trip with Buffalo Jones was likely the most important exploration he [ Zane Grey] undertook providing a wellspring for his later writings on the American West. [Attributes: First Edition]

London: Methuen & Co, 1908. Please see full description and photos for details on this rare first edition. The Wind in the Willows BY Kenneth Grahame Published by Methuen & Co., London; 1908 First Edition/ First Printing. Frontispiece by Graham Robertson. Book Condition: Very Good This lovely copy of the children's classic is bound in it's original blue/green cloth boards with pictorial gilt designs to front board and spine. The top edge of the pages is also gilt, whilst the others are uncut. There is some marking and wear to the boards and edges. The spine is on the weak side, and the cloth has split on the bottom of the front spine edge. With a little tlc and some repairs this would be a Very Good copy of this children's book for a very reasonable price. Inside, the cracking to the spine is visible inside the front board, and there is a gift inscription to the front free endpaper and some spotting and toning to the pages as to be expected of a book this age. There are a few faint pencil marks to the first page, but the other pages in the book appear to be free from marking and in very good condition. Due to the damage to the spine, the binding is a little on the weak side, but with repairs this could easily be remedied. In all, this book offers the ideal opportunity to gain a First Edition, first printing of a rare and highly valuable children's classic, subject to some minor restoration. As such, it is the perfect investment for any book collector and will be a beautiful book to pass down through the generations, as this classic children's tale is sure to be much loved f … [Click Below for Full Description]

Kenneth Grahame - The Wind in the Willows - 1908 U.K. first edition published by Methuen and Co The book is firmly bound in the publisher's gilt decorated blue cloth, it has been re-backed with majority of the original spine overlaid onto similarly toned material, the rear board shows signs of rubbing and water damage, the corners are bumped and rubbed and there are further minor marks. The text block retains the original endpapers and pastedowns, though with repairs to the gutters and an additional front endpaper of similarly aged paper, it is toned, stained and foxed with several names written neatly to the original front endpaper and a bookseller's label to the rear pastedown. Nice copies are hard to find due to having been read numerous times, this one looks as though it could have been in Toad's pocket when he drove the hi-jacked motor car into the pond, and as such is an awful but not entirely charmless first edition of a perennial favourite. Jack Howard Thorp
Estancia: News Print Shop. In the year 1908 at a local rancher and surveyor by the name of Jack Thorp walked into the cramped offices of the The Estancia News Shop in Estancia, New Mexico, and inquired of the printer about publishing a small book of "cowboy songs." For the past nineteen years, Thorp had sought out cowboy ballads and poems from Texas to Utah, and had even written a few himself. Thorp "made a dicker" that day with the printer, P. A. Speckmann, to print 2,000 copies of his little book for six cents each. The finished volume, a pamphlet really, numbered fifty pages and contained only twenty-three songs. It was the first time a book devoted exclusively to cowboy songs had ever been published, and the credit goes to Thorp for being the first person to take a serious interest in collecting, preserving, and creating the genre. N. Howard "Jack" Thorp is considered the foremost collector and preserver of cowboy songs and poetry. His book titled, "Songs Of The Cowboys" was America's first published collection of cowboy ballads. Thorp traveled more than 1,500 miles in New Mexico, Texas, and Utah seeking out cowboy songs at ranches, immigrant camps, saloons, medicine shows, and variety theaters. He seldom met anyone who could recite all the verses to a particular ballad, but he faithfully jotted down what he could fit in a small notebook. By the end of his journey, he had pieced together such cowboy classics as "Sam Bass," "The Grand Round-up," "Top Hand," "The Gal I Left Behind Me," and "Bucking Bronco." Among the best known is "Little Joe, the Wrangler," written by Th … [Click Below for Full Description]

[ART MEDIEVAL - ENLUMINURES - FRENCH PAINTER XV - JUDAISME] DURRIEU (Paul) 1855-1925 Count Paul Durrieu, born in Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin) on October 2, 1855 and died in La Rivière (Landes) November 24, 1925 is a museum curator and historian of French art. After studying at the Lycée Bonaparte and then at the Ecole Nationale des Chartes (from which he graduated first in 1878), he was appointed member of the French School of Rome in 1879 and then assistant in the painting department at the Musée du Louvre in charge of illuminations and primitive French. He was elected to the academy of inscriptions and belles-lettres in 1907. Jean Fouquet Jean Fouquet (born around 1420 perhaps in Tours and died between 1478 and 1481, probably in the same city), is considered one of the greatest painters of the first Renaissance and the renovator of French painting of the fifteenth century. Trained in the French tradition of international Gothic, he developed a new style by integrating the strong chromatic tones of the Gothic with the perspective and the Italian volumes of the Quattrocento, as well as the naturalistic innovations of the Flemish primitives. His masterpieces are the Diptych of Melun and the miniatures of the Hours of Étienne Chevalier. Recognized in his time, the work of Jean Fouquet fell into oblivion until its rehabilitation in the nineteenth century by French and German romantics, fasci … [Click Below for Full Description]

London. The China Inland Mission. 1908. Color lithographed maps, xii + (index map plus 22 single and double page maps) + 16pp, 13 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches, gilt lettered red cloth covered boards (hardbound). The Index Map of China has a stain with a small piece of paper adhered to it from the facing page (which is the Alphabetical List of Protestant Missions), with resultant damage to that page; neat marginal notes to the Index Map only; the first several sheets of the atlas are beginning to split along the lower gutter (from the tight binding). The binding is worn with splits to the tail of the spine and marking to the front cover. The maps (with the exception of the Index Map are clean and bright). It was hoped that these companion volumes would be ready for the Centenary Conference which was to take place in Shanghai during the spring of 1907. Through unexpected delays it was, however, found impossible, without serious loss to the Atlas, to have the maps ready in time, so the book entitled The Chinese Empire was published first. The Atlas, which is now sent forth … [Click Below for Full Description]

His first collection of stories published in 1901 quickly sold over a quarter of a million copies and henceforth his career as a writer was established. An active participant in social and political debate, many of his writings including Tsar Golod draw on the revolutionary events of contemporary Russia. After initially supporting the Bolsheviks and the February Revolution of 1917 he predicted a catastrophic outcome and died embittered and impoverished in 1919. Thanks to the popularity of Edgar Allan Poe, Andreev's work was translated into English and published in America throughout the 1920s. William Field
London Mc Corquodale & Co, 1908. 31 x 44 inches / 112 x 79 cm. Rare separately issued map showing the railroads of the Republic of Argentina, published in London by Mc Corquodale & Co., for William Field, Secretario de la Oficina de Ajustes. The map captures the industrial and agriculltural growth of Argentina at the end of National Autonomist Hegemony, a period of tremendous growth in the Argentine population and economy, spurred by government reforms and a mass influx of European immigrants. The map is divided by states and shows in great detail, the operating railoads in Argentina at the beginning of the 20th Century, with the various lines identified by different colors. and dashed lines showing projected railroad lines. Several insets show the urban and suburban lines around Tucuman, Mendoza, Buenos Aires, Rosario, San Francisco, and Bahia Blanca, with a larger inset showing the railoads in Patagonia. A note at the bottom indicates that the map includes all operating lines and lines under construction. The map is apparently very rare. We find no recorded examples of the map and no examples in any on line search.
