[Romero, José María]
Mexico: Impresión privada, Talleres Graficos de Ed. Aguirre, 1908. [4],105,[3],168,[2],78pp. plus two photographic plates (including frontispiece). Publisher's red cloth, stamped in gilt and blind. Moderate shelf wear, corners bumped. Small dampstain to upper left corner affecting boards, titlepage, and top edge of text block (no text affected). Small hole in upper margin of p.77 (second range), text only slightly affected. Very good. A flowery but fascinating biography of Cayetana Grageda de Romero (1835-1905), written by her widower, José María Romero. Romero presents a woman unusually independent for her time, and who was seemingly gifted at everything she did: obedient daughter, devoted mother and wife, solemn Catholic, successful actress, gifted nurse, and dedicated obstetrician. Romero sets the events of her life against the backdrop of the formation of the modern Mexican state, including ongoing war as well as political and social upheaval. Some of this social upheaval was due to immigration, which Romero wrote about as a senator, culminating in a report critiquing unchecked Asian immigration into Mexico. At the same time, Romero was a strong supporter of Mexico's indigenous population and advocated for their noncoercive integration into the Mexican mainstream and protection from exploitative labor practices (Romero, pp.180-90). Perhaps not coincidentally, Cayetana was mixed race, and Romero emphasizes that she is a "modelo de la mujer criolla de su época y clase social en México" ("model Creole woman of her time and class in Mexico") (p.9). Romero had quite th … [Click Below for Full Description]

E.M. Forster
Edward Arnold, London, 1908. Hardback. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Scarce 1st printing in publisher's original red cloth with titles in gilt to front board and spine - there is moderate fading to spine and titles remain perfectly legible; bumping/rubbing at spine ends with a pin head sized indentation towards bottom end; also bumping at board corners and moderate rubbing to joints. The binding remains firm and square. Internally no inscriptions with some residual glue traces at half-title gutter and a little light spotting to prelims and pastedowns; some tearing to front ep gutter but no movement; possibly ffep not original but has some age. Schumpeter, Joseph
Leipzig, Verlag von Duncker & Humblot, 1908. Lionel Robbins’ personal copy. One volume in 8vo; pp. XXXII, 626; contemporary private cloth binding, a bit soiled, spine with slightly rubbed black gilt lettering-piece, name of Lionel Robbins in his hand on front free endpaper, handwritten dedication to upper margin of title “To Lionel, Georg. Wien, September 1927”, inside very few of Robbins’ markings and some paper slips with his handwritten annotations tipped in, else clean and crisp, a very good copy from the private library of L. Robbins. Rare first edition. This early work established Schumpeter’s fame as an outstanding figure of the younger Austrian economists. It was probably conceived during his days as a graduate student and written in Cairo. It is a brilliant statement of general equilibrium theory, making clear both what static theory could explain and what it could not. GREY, Zane
New York, March 1908. Letter. Folds from mailing, still about Fine, with envelope. A three-page AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED as "Pearl" (Grey was born Pearl Zane Gray) to his wife "Dolly" on three sheets of illustrated New Grand Hotel stationery with envelope postmarked March 1908. Grey discusses his rotten position: "I'm afraid I can't have Outing publish my book until everybody's got good and ready to let me.... And I, like an idiot signed that paper, which legally gives them the right to my photographs. Why didn't you or Murphy see that? If they don't choose to use the story & pictures I can't get the book published at all. It's most damnably sickening. I don't know what to do.... For a measly little hundred dollars I have about queered my chances.... Murphy says it will work out allright [sic]. I hope so, but tonight I can't see anything but black. Will be on the mountain tomorrow." Zane Grey decided to become a writer just five years before this letter when he wrote a fishing story that appeared in RECREATION MAGAZINE. Outing published Grey's third book, THE LAST OF THE PLAINSMEN, in 1908 complete with Grey's photographs. It was based on a trip Grey made out West with Col. "Buffalo" Jones in 1907. This trip was the turning point in Grey's life, but his book about Jones and his experiences in the Grand Canyon was not successful. It would be a few more years before Grey became a success with RIDERS OF THE PURPLE SAGE. An outstanding early letter revealing the torment of a struggling writer.

[Nevada Photographica]
[Various places in Nevada, including Dayton, Carson, Reno, Mound House, 1908. Very good.. 100 photographs, most approximately 3 x 5.25 inches. Oblong quarto. Original black leatherette covers. Some rubbing and wear, particularly at foot of spine. Contents solid, with glassine interleaves, and extensive manuscript captions on black card stock mounts. Images crisp and clear. A photograph album containing exactly one hundred excellent images, the preponderance of which focus on traveling in Nevada during the 1900s. The photos compiled here document life in Nevada in 1907 and 1908 in several towns, including Virginia City, Dayton, Carson City, Reno, and Mound House. Indeed, there is a particular focus on Mound House, as the compiler of the album apparently had a connection to family there, and several of the final images of the album are portraits. Other views of Mound House include the train depot and additional town architecture, as well images of ranch and family life. There are also images of industry, including mines in Virginia City, a mining camp in Ramsey, and a mill in Dayton. Interspersed are images of local life, including a short series of images of an elderly Asian woman apparently named "Old Holly" near her shack and an image of a Japanese water carrier at the Mound House rail depot who is labelled the "Mound House Water System," as well as images of flooding and recent damage from the Carson River in Dayton. The initial portion of the album, approximately thirty images, contains images from stops made in Philadelphia and Mount Vernon. Nevertheless, the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gomez, Eusebio
Buenos Aires: Juan Roldan, 1908. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. 242 pages. Text in Spanish. A criminologist describes criminal activities and criminals in Buenos Aires, with chapters on professional criminals, thieves and loan sharks, prostitution, pimps (the "parasites of prostitution"), vagrancy, faith healers, and of greatest current interest, homosexuality. Gomez first traces the history of homosexuality to Greece and Rome and then discusses its treatment under law in the early 20th century. He switches from Spanish to Latin when he needs to explain various terms, such as sodomy ("inmissio mebri in anum"). He summarizes the views of Karl Heinrich Ulrichs and Richard Krafft-Ebing and appears to entertain the idea that there might be two kinds of gay people, those who choose the lifestye and those with innate tendencies. Regardless of origins, Gomez has no shortage of perjorative adjectives, which do not need repeating here, to describe the gay community in Buenos Aires. This opening theoretical section includes lesbians and other LGBTQ elements, but his detailed observations that follow address only people born male. Remarkably, he presents queer people on their own terms, reproducing photographs of transgender women with their chosen names, but unfortunate captions, like "Sara, invertido sexual" and "La bella Otero, pederasta pasivo." Gomez also quotes them at length. Myosotis, who uses feminine adjective endings to describe herself (e.g., "soy atenta" [I am attentive]), is quoted at length, but begins by saying that what Gomez finds … [Click Below for Full Description]

Teichmueller, Hans (Early Texas Judge
Von Boeckmann-Jones, 1908. FIRST EDITION. Hardcover. Small folio. Bound in original publisher's brown boards, upper cover decorated with a large vignette of acorns and oak leaves (signed "M.T."), recent brown morocco spine. Excellent, attractive copy. Very good. ¶ EARLY TEXAS JURISPRUDENCE AS PRACTICED BY ONE OF THE ORIGINAL GERMAN IMMIGRANTS. "Hans Teichmueller (1837-1901), judge and lawyer, was born in Braunschweig (Brunswick), Germany, on March 7, 1837, the third son of an army officer. At the age of fourteen, after several years of private training, he attended a boarding school where he had intended to study theology. He later gave up this idea to become a cabin boy on a steamer to New York. While in New York he stayed with a German lawyer who tried to persuade him to remain and study law. Not long afterwards Teichmueller returned to Germany and entered the gymnasium of Blankenburg in the Harz Mountains. The sudden death of his father a few years later made it impossible for Teichmueller to secure a university education, so he came to Texas to join his cousin, Arthur Meerscheidt, who lived on a farm in Fayette County. On June 16, 1858, Teichmueller married Augusta Kellner, whose father, a modern-language teacher, had taught him English when he first arrived in Fayette County. The Teichmuellers had five children. For a few months they farmed near Highhill in Fayette County, before moving to New Ulm, where Teichmueller studied law and taught school. His duties as a teacher exempted him from military service, but he served for about half a year as secretary of a militia a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Romero had qui … [Click Below for Full Description]

Deland, Margaret
Boston or Kennebunkport, Maine or Dedham, Mass, 1908. Approximately 95 pages. 8vo & 4to. Very good condition. Approximately 95 pages. 8vo & 4to. An archive of correspondence by the novelist, essayist, and short-story writer Margaret Deland (1857-1945), whose work examined the moral challenges faced by American women at the turn of the century, to James MacArthur, her editor at Harpers. Deland is perhaps best known as the author of John Ward, Preacher (1888), Old Chester Tales (1898), and The Awakening of Helena Richie (1906). The present letters concern works published and in progress, text corrections, payment terms, plot lines, reactions to her books, publicity, etc. Also included are one and a half-pages of the typescript of one of The Awakening of Helena Richie, profusely annotated, and with another sheet of holograph additions and corrections. MacArthur (1866-1909) was a literary advisor and editor at Harper's from 1901-1909, during which period Harpers published several of Deland's works, including Helena Richie, Dr. Lavendar's People (1903), The Common Way (1904), An Encore (1907), and Where the Laborers are Few (1909), and Harpers remained Deland's publisher for the rest of her career. "Throughout her career, Deland's work reflected the dilemmas facing women at the turn of the century and advocated moderation, balance, and individual responsibility as the best responses to the changing social order. Critic Diana Reep sums up Deland's strength as a storyteller and social commentator: 'Her work is a mirror of the relationships, the problems, the moral crises of an a … [Click Below for Full Description]

DAVENPORT Herbert J.
1908. First edition. 8vo (228 x 158mm). ix, [3], 582 pp. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt (extremities rubbed, discreet repair to front hinge, some slightly spattered staining to spine, otherwise very good). Chicago, The University of Chicago Press. A presentation copy, inscribed by the author ?With the cordial greetings of the guilty individual H.J. Davenport? in black ink to front free endpaper. Above the undated presentation inscription is the ownership inscription of the British economist Lionel Charles Robbins (1898-1984), head of economics at the LSE, a fascinating association, bringing together two of the foremost English-speaking proponents of the Austrian School. Some occasional underling and marginal highlighting in black ink. The book that established Davenport's reputation as a leading international economist, being a highly informed critical examination of the major economic doctrines of classical and early neoclassical thought, with an especial emphasis on the marginal revolution. It received a glowing review by Irving Fisher in the Journal of Political Economy, with Fisher writing that: ? the highest value of Professor Davenport's work consists in the fact that it points the direction toward which economic theories are tending. It may be hoped that it will lead others to see the handwriting on the wall with respect to obsolete and impractical theories. At the same time, its careful, historical criticism stamps the newer theories with the hall-mark of legitimate historical development.? [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Jack Yeats
Dublin: Cuala Press, 1908. See listing. RUSH HAWKINS BOOKS A complete edition (84 installments) of "A Broadside," illustrated by Jack Yeats ========== 84 numbers--complete as issued. Dublin: Cuala Press, 1908/15. Folio. Published monthly by Elizabeth C. Yeats and the Dun Emer (later Cuala) Press. Edition limited to 300 copies of each issue. The Broadsides are in their original portfolios. In April 2019 Yeats' "Broadside" was the subject of an exhibition held at the Model museum in Sligo, Ireland. The market has set a valuation for this set at between $11-16,000. They are offered here, in their loveliness, at a significant reduction. ===== A Broadside was issued monthly, for seven years, in an edition limited to 300 copies only. Each contains three original woodcut designs by Jack B. Yeats (occasionally more), of which the first two are hand colored after the artist's design. The third woodcut, which usually occupies a full page, is generally left uncolored. Each issue consists of a single folded sheet 280 x 190mm printed on three sides, the last left blank. Some of the smaller drawings may also be found as Cuala prints or greeting cards, but the majority of the larger illustrations (mostly 125 x 176mm) have never been reprinted. Changes in print technology mean that no modern printer, however expert, could do justice to these plates; hence the original set of Broadsides will remain the only source for this massive anthology of Jack Yeats' graphic art (over 250 drawings). The subject matter ranges from his familiar West of Ireland subjects, to the Cockney life of London, his … [Click Below for Full Description]
