Being a record of many delightful days spent in touring the Continent by William Kissam Vanderbilt Jr. " This First Edition book measures 7 1/4" x 10 1/4", and is 206 pages long. It contains 67 photographs taken by the author ... many of them wonderful photos of the cars he used for his journey - Renault , Mercedes, Daimler, and Panhard-Levassor. This travel log was privately printed in a limited edition of only 200 copies to be distributed to his friends who were also considering touring Europe by motor car. In this travel diary , WKV describes the actual conditions of the roads, scenery, towns, and Inns. Travel times and distances, and car performance and mishaps are documented. He also writes of his participation in the Paris to Madrid and Paris to Vienne Automobile Races. William Kissam Vanderbilt Jr. was a wealthy Long Island Railroad heir with an intense passion for yachts, automobiles , horses, and eventually airplanes. In the early 1900s, he embarked on overseas travel and exploration , in his beloved automobiles, or on his yachts , and wrote elaborate day by day accounts of his experiences on the roads of Europe, or on the seas around the world. These would become the privately published books he is renowned for. Embossed blue cloth binding with gilt title and border. FARJEON, Eleanor
London Elkin Matthews, 1908. 1st Impression. 8vo. 130 x 200mm. Original grey cloth with gilt tiles to the spine and upper board, uncut edges, 80pp. There are two separate inscriptions by the author, one to her brother dated 1908 and then to Denys Blakelock, dated 1954. One of 500 copies printed. The spine shoulders are rubbed and there is a vertical line of rubbing down the spine itself. There is a little shelf wear and a few light marks and all fore edge corners remain firm and square. Internally, there are two separate inscriptions by the author to the front free endpaper. The first is to one her brothers in the month of publication: 'To my dear Cola / from his loving sister Nellie. / December 1908.' She was known to the family as Nellie. The second is to her great long time friend, the actor (and her biographer) Denys Blakelock: 'And to my dear Denys in commemoration of the "Alcestis" in which he was Leader of the Chorus of Pherae (Third Programme) today July 4th 1954, from his loving Eleanor.' The Alcestis was indeed aired on the BBC Third Programme (later to become Radio 3) at 16:30 on July 4th 1954. The front pastedown bears the ownership signature of Deny Blakelock and there are biro notes at the top of the rear free endpaper. Otherwise, the pages are generally very clean with only the occasional light finger mark. This is Farjeon's first solo appearance in print, one published at her own expense – or more accurately, her mother's, and dedicated to her father. Having paid £37.17s.6d to the publisher, she received gratis one hundred of the five hundred copies printed. … [Click Below for Full Description]

P., R.S.
[Boston?], 1908. Unbound. Near Fine. Original illustration. Pen, ink, and gouache, highlighted with china white. Approximately 11" x 7". One (archival?) tape repair on verso, tipped onto foamcore with two pieces of (archival?) tape, slight age-toning, else near fine. Illustration of the burnt out husks of buildings, with a cat plaintively leaning on the chest of a forlorn dog, apparently wondering where their next meal is coming from. Beneath the image is the single caption "Homeless." The conflagration in question is also known as The Great Chelsea fire of 1908, in Chelsea, Massachusetts, directly across the Mystic River from Boston in which 19 people were killed and 15,000 people left homeless. Wind-born sparks were carried from a fire at the Boston Blacking Company that was thought to be under control, but which spread to the many wooden frame buildings of the neighborhood. Prodigious nationwide relief efforts resulted; hopefully some of it made its way to the abandoned and forlorn house pets.

London: John Murray, 1908. [Military Strategy] FIRST ENGLISH TRANSLATION. First edition, octavo (19 x 13cm), pp.132. Publisher's green cloth with gilt titles and red decoration to spine and upper. Light spotting to endpapers, and light rubbing to cloth. Near fine. The first attempt to translate fully into English the two most important of the Seven Military Classics anthologised in the eleventh century AD by Emperor Shenzong of Song. Everard Ferguson Calthrop (1876-1915) was a gifted artist and linguist at St Paul's School before joining the army. He was sent out to Japan following the signing of the Anglo-Japanese Alliance in 1902 with 100 other officers to lean the language and gain an understanding of Japanese culture. Serving as Language Officer (1904-08) and military attaché (1914-15), he was considered one of the best integrated of the British officers, taking a keen interest in the strong military traditions of Japan, which (as he notes in the introduction) venerated Sun Tzu and Wu Qi with even greater fervour than China itself.

The Roycrofters (Roycroft Press), East Aurora, 1908. First edition thus. Large, thick octavo (three inches thick). An apparent unrecorded Roycroft edition (not in McKenna or elsewhere located) of his book published in the preceding year by the New York publisher, G. P. Putnam & Sons. The book is bound by the Roycrofters in half brown pigskin with embossed lettering on spine and two large bands with embossed borders, and dated with the Roycroft seal at the foot of the spine, 19 (seal) 08. As well, the binding bears a large leather brown buckle (sewn) and attached through the boards, with brass fixtures attached. The buckle works perfectly. Frontispiece etchings, superb illustrated initials throughout. Spine somewhat rubbed as typical with this kind of pigskin. Overall near fine copy of an extremely rare and important Roycroft item which presents his famous Little Journeys to the Homes of Good Men and Great for the first time in one place under the Roycroft imprint. [Romero, José María]
Mexico: Impresión privada, Talleres Graficos de Ed. Aguirre, 1908. [4],105,[3],168,[2],78pp. plus two photographic plates (including frontispiece). Publisher's red cloth, stamped in gilt and blind. Moderate shelf wear, corners bumped. Small dampstain to upper left corner affecting boards, titlepage, and top edge of text block (no text affected). Small hole in upper margin of p.77 (second range), text only slightly affected. Very good. A flowery but fascinating biography of Cayetana Grageda de Romero (1835-1905), written by her widower, José María Romero. Romero presents a woman unusually independent for her time, and who was seemingly gifted at everything she did: obedient daughter, devoted mother and wife, solemn Catholic, successful actress, gifted nurse, and dedicated obstetrician. Romero sets the events of her life against the backdrop of the formation of the modern Mexican state, including ongoing war as well as political and social upheaval. Some of this social upheaval was due to immigration, which Romero wrote about as a senator, culminating in a report critiquing unchecked Asian immigration into Mexico. At the same time, Romero was a strong supporter of Mexico's indigenous population and advocated for their noncoercive integration into the Mexican mainstream and protection from exploitative labor practices (Romero, pp.180-90). Perhaps not coincidentally, Cayetana was mixed race, and Romero emphasizes that she is a "modelo de la mujer criolla de su época y clase social en México" ("model Creole woman of her time and class in Mexico") (p.9). GREY, Zane
New York, March 1908. Letter. Folds from mailing, still about Fine, with envelope. A three-page AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED as "Pearl" (Grey was born Pearl Zane Gray) to his wife "Dolly" on three sheets of illustrated New Grand Hotel stationery with envelope postmarked March 1908. Grey discusses his rotten position: "I'm afraid I can't have Outing publish my book until everybody's got good and ready to let me.... And I, like an idiot signed that paper, which legally gives them the right to my photographs. Why didn't you or Murphy see that? If they don't choose to use the story & pictures I can't get the book published at all. It's most damnably sickening. I don't know what to do.... For a measly little hundred dollars I have about queered my chances.... Murphy says it will work out allright [sic]. I hope so, but tonight I can't see anything but black. Will be on the mountain tomorrow." Zane Grey decided to become a writer just five years before this letter when he wrote a fishing story that appeared in RECREATION MAGAZINE. Outing published Grey's third book, THE LAST OF THE PLAINSMEN, in 1908 complete with Grey's photographs. It was based on a trip Grey made out West with Col. "Buffalo" Jones in 1907. This trip was the turning point in Grey's life, but his book about Jones and his experiences in the Grand Canyon was not successful. It would be a few more years before Grey became a success with RIDERS OF THE PURPLE SAGE. An outstanding early letter revealing the torment of a struggling writer.

[Nevada Photographica]
[Various places in Nevada, including Dayton, Carson, Reno, Mound House, 1908. Very good.. 100 photographs, most approximately 3 x 5.25 inches. Oblong quarto. Original black leatherette covers. Some rubbing and wear, particularly at foot of spine. Contents solid, with glassine interleaves, and extensive manuscript captions on black card stock mounts. Images crisp and clear. A photograph album containing exactly one hundred excellent images, the preponderance of which focus on traveling in Nevada during the 1900s. The photos compiled here document life in Nevada in 1907 and 1908 in several towns, including Virginia City, Dayton, Carson City, Reno, and Mound House. Indeed, there is a particular focus on Mound House, as the compiler of the album apparently had a connection to family there, and several of the final images of the album are portraits. Other views of Mound House include the train depot and additional town architecture, as well images of ranch and family life. There are also images of industry, including mines in Virginia City, a mining camp in Ramsey, and a mill in Dayton. Interspersed are images of local life, including a short series of images of an elderly Asian woman apparently named "Old Holly" near her shack and an image of a Japanese water carrier at the Mound House rail depot who is labelled the "Mound House Water System," as well as images of flooding and recent damage from the Carson River in Dayton. The initial portion of the album, approximately thirty images, contains images from stops made in Philadelphia and Mount Vernon. Nevertheless, the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gomez, Eusebio
Buenos Aires: Juan Roldan, 1908. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. 242 pages. Text in Spanish. A criminologist describes criminal activities and criminals in Buenos Aires, with chapters on professional criminals, thieves and loan sharks, prostitution, pimps (the "parasites of prostitution"), vagrancy, faith healers, and of greatest current interest, homosexuality. Gomez first traces the history of homosexuality to Greece and Rome and then discusses its treatment under law in the early 20th century. He switches from Spanish to Latin when he needs to explain various terms, such as sodomy ("inmissio mebri in anum"). He summarizes the views of Karl Heinrich Ulrichs and Richard Krafft-Ebing and appears to entertain the idea that there might be two kinds of gay people, those who choose the lifestye and those with innate tendencies. Regardless of origins, Gomez has no shortage of perjorative adjectives, which do not need repeating here, to describe the gay community in Buenos Aires. This opening theoretical section includes lesbians and other LGBTQ elements, but his detailed observations that follow address only people born male. Remarkably, he presents queer people on their own terms, reproducing photographs of transgender women with their chosen names, but unfortunate captions, like "Sara, invertido sexual" and "La bella Otero, pederasta pasivo." Gomez also quotes them at length. Myosotis, who uses feminine adjective endings to describe herself (e.g., "soy atenta" [I am attentive]), is quoted at length, but begins by saying that what Gomez finds so abhorrent is perfectl … [Click Below for Full Description]
