        The Collected Works:

London: Chapman & Hall Limited, imprinted at the Shakespeare Head Press,, 1908. Vol.II: The King's Threshold. On Baile's Strand. Deirdre. The Shadowy Waters; Vol.III: Countess Cathleen. The Land of Heart's Desire. The Unicorn from the Stars; Vol.IV: The Hour-Glass. Cathleen Ni Houlihan. The Golden Helmet. The Irish Dramatic Movement; Vol.V: The Celtic Twilight. Stories of Red Hanrahan; Vol.VI: Ideas of Good and Evil; Vol.VII: The Secret Rose; Rosa Alchemica. The Tables of Law. The Adoration of the Magi. John Sherman and Dhoya; Vol.VIII: Dicoveries. Edmund Spenser. Poetry and Tradition; & Other Essays. 8 volumes, octavo. Publisher's vellum-backed boards, grey cloth sides, gilt titles to spines and sides, top edges gilt, others untrimmed. Four portrait frontispieces in the set. An exceptionally nice set with only minimal rubbing at the extremities and the spines all clean and white, endpapers toned but otherwise internally fresh. Excellent condition. Contemporary ownership inscriptions to the front free endpapers of volumes 5 and 6. First collected edition of Yeats's work, signed by Yeats on the half-title of volume four (very scarce thus), one of the 250 first issue sets in the deluxe quarter vellum binding, with the publisher's imprint on the spines and title pages, from a total edition of 1,060 sets printed at the Shakespeare Head Press. The signature to the half title of volume four reads "W. B. Yeats, Nov 16 1916" - this volume also bears the illustrated bookplate of Lady Violet Leconfield (1892-1952), who married Charles Henry, 3rd Baron Leconfield (1872-1952) in 1911. They lived at Petworth House (shown on her illustrated bookplate), one of England's greatest aristocratic houses, was friend to numerous authors including Alice Meynell, and even co-wrote a book of poems, "A Petworth Posie" (1918) with Rudyard Kipling. Yeats may have been introduced to Lady Leconfield through Wilfrid Scawen Blunt, who was born at Petworth, or through Leconfield's lifelong friend "Ettie" Lady Besborough, who had been attracting Yeats as a party guest since 1911. As a production, this collected edition is regarded as a marvellous piece of publishing (Yeats himself was proud of it, remarking, "I think nobody of our time has had so fine an edition - I believe it will greatly strengthen my position"), collecting, with the poet's own selection and arrangement, a substantially complete corpus (poems, plays and prose) of his first canon of work, before the finding of his later voice.

The Fifth Queen Crowned. A Romance.

London: Eveleigh Nash, 1908 - Octavo. Original red cloth, titles and decoration to front board and spine gilt. Endleaves rather tanned, boards a little marked, spine faded and rubbed. A very good copy. First edition, first impression. With his signed presentation inscription on the front free endpaper to his first wife, "Elsie Hueffer affecly [sic] from Ford M. H. 26th March MCMVIII". Elsie's importance in Hueffer's development as a writer is easy to understate. However his progression from the middle ranking early efforts to the masterful and enduring work of genius that is The Good Soldier owes more than a little to her support. The third of Hueffer's Elizabethan novels. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

48 original photographs of mining activities in northern China, and transport there on the Trans-Siberian Railroad and through Manchuria

1908 - Photographs measuring 2-3/4 x 3-3/4 in. some a little faded. Manuscript captions in white ink in an album with 12 leaves. 8vo. RARE PHOTOGRAPHS OF NORTH CHINA. An excellent group of images documenting a tour though the little known, and rarely photographed, mining districts of northern China. The photographer was likely attached to the Anglo-French Quicksilver and Mining Concession which had claims in the Guizhou province. Among the photographs is an image of Henry Brelich, who was the chief engineer of the Concession.Commencing at Kainsk, the photographer travelled on the Trans-Siberian Railway to Lake Baikal, Harbin, then via Mukden to the coal mining towns of Fushun (the coal capital), Kang-shan and Tung-Hwa. There are shots of mines at Ta-miao-erh-kou, Tung-hua, Ta-maio-kou and Fushun, as well as "Korean Miners at Chi-tao-kou", "Ta-miao-erh-kou Placer, Washing Gold", and "Ssu-tao-chiang coal pits"There are shots of the expedition in action: "Crossing the Hun - tributary of the Yalu", "The Expedition en route outside Mukden." "An accident en route", a group shot of the servants. Then some images of local interest such as street scenes at Mukden and Tung-hwa, the "Shrine outside Ling-kai", "Inn at Kwei-tai-mao-tze", a Manchurian farm. Other images include the floating dock at Lake Baikal, views of the Hun Valley, the Kao-li-mutze-ling pass, and the Loh chuen valley. The group provides a fascinating insight into this remote part of China at the beginning of the twentieth century. Anglo-Chinese Treaty of 1902 paved the way for English developers as it included a revision of existing mining regulations. However, the new regulations, which didn't come into effect until the end of 1907, were such that it proved nearly impossible for any foreign firm to gain a foothold, making this expedition one of the very few to gain a concession. Photographs measuring 2-3/4 x 3-3/4 in. some a little faded. Manuscript captions in white ink in an album with 12 leaves. 8vo

My African Journey, publisher's presentation copy of the first edition, only printing

London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1908. First edition, only printing. Hardcover. This is a presentation copy of the British first edition, only printing of My African Journey, Churchill's travelogue on Britain's possessions in East Africa, written while he was serving as Undersecretary of State for the Colonies.  This copy is embossed in two lines on the upper right of the title page with the words ?PRESENTATION | COPY.? Churchill?s bibliographer, Ronald I. Cohen, cites 8,161 copies of the cloth-bound British first edition, of which 7870 were sold and ?291 were distributed gratis.? This copy is undoubtedly one of these 291. We have encountered only one other copy embossed thus, and that copy also bore an original publisher?s review slip, corroborating both early and gratis distribution. Condition is good - sound and original, but unlovely. The striking red cloth binding is square and tight with good spine color and only minor wear to extremities, but regrettably heavily soiled and stained on both covers and spine. The contents remain bright with a crisp feel. We find no previous ownership marks. Spotting, endemic to this edition, is very light, with only a few scattered spots within and almost none evident on the page edges. My African Journey is notable, among other things, for being the only one of Churchill many books to contain photographs apparently taken by the author. The 61 photographs of this edition were tipped in rather than bound, so copies should always be carefully checked to ensure the presence of all illustrations and maps.  All are present here, as is the tissue cover at the frontispiece. Of note, the map at page 2 is tipped in as a folding map. The majority of first edition copies of My African Journey we have examined feature this as a tipped in map on a single, unfolded page. This folding map is exactly the same in content and scale as maps in other first edition copies, the difference being that blank one inch margins at the top and bottom of this particular map were left untrimmed after printing, and thus it was tipped into this copy with the top two inches folded over. Given presence of the folding map in a publisher?s presentation copy, we incline to attribute the folding map at p.2 to earlier bindings of the first and only printing. In the summer of 1907 Churchill left England for five months, making his way after working stops in southern Europe to Africa for "a tour of the east African domains."  In early November, Churchill would kill a rhinoceros, the basis of the striking illustration on the front cover of the British first edition of his eventual book.  By now a seasoned and financially shrewd author, Churchill arranged to profit doubly from the trip, first by serializing articles in The Strand Magazine and then by publishing a book based substantially upon them.  In November 1908 Hodder and Stoughton published My African Journey as a book, which was a substantial 10,000 words longer than the serialized articles.  The British first edition is striking, with a vivid red binding and a prominent front cover bearing a woodcut illustration in blue, grey, and black of Churchill with his bagged white rhinoceros.  The red cloth spine proved exceptionally vulnerable to sunning and the lovely books seem to have attracted handling, making wear and soiling the norm.  Spotting is also endemic.  Bright and clean copies are scarce.         My African Journey.

London: Hodder and Stoughton,, 1908. With sixty-one illustrations from photographs by the author and Lieutenant-Colonel Gordon Wilson, and three maps. Octavo. Original red cloth, gilt-lettered spine, titles and pictorial decoration to front board in black, blue, and grey. Publisher's 16-page catalogue at end. Photographic frontispiece, 46 photographic plates, and 3 maps. Small address stamp in blind to frontispiece and half-title. Spine faded, short split to head of front joint but text block sound, small mark to front cover, one loose plate, light foxing to contents, rear free endpaper creased. A very good copy. First edition, first impression. My African Journey was the first book to derive purely from Churchill's journalism, as distinct from his work as a war correspondent. Before embarking he signed an extremely lucrative contract for the publication of a series of articles in The Strand, and for further publication in book form. What Churchill was offered is impressive testimony to his perceived drawing power, at £750 for five contributions he was receiving "more than Kipling, whom The Strand were paying £90 for his short stories; more than W. W. Jacobs, whose rate at the time was £110 for a story" (Pound, The Strand Magazine, 1891-1950). "The result bubbles with Churchill's irrepressible interest in everything new, whether it was the thrill of hunting rhino, the dangers of sleeping sickness, or the engagingly extempore justice of the District Officers" (Woods, Artillery of Words: The Writings of Sir Winston Churchill, 1992, p. 81).

        THE WAR IN THE AIR

1908. And particularly how Mr. Bert Smallways fared while it lasted. With Illustrations by A.C. Michael. London: George Bell and Sons, 1908. 2 pp undated ads. Original blue cloth decorated in gilt. First Edition of this extraordinary tale of a Cockney cycle mechanic who is carried off by a drifting balloon and is then caught up in a surprise German air attack on New York City -- which in turn precipitates the collapse of civilization. Though this book typifies Wells's fantastic "fiction about the future" (and includes a remarkable forecast of aerial warfare), it is perhaps more noteworthy as one of his earliest warnings about "the German menace" -- a topic to which he would devote increased attention over the coming years.~This copy is in Currey's binding "A" (with lettering in gilt on both the front cover and the spine, and with no mounted color plate). This is a bright copy, fine except for one slightly cracked endpaper (free endpapers browned, as always). Wells Soc. 36; Hammond B11; Currey p. 526.

Wien: Verlag von Carl Gerold's Sohn, 1908. First editions. 8vos., variable paginations, with mounted original albumen photographic plates. 43 volumes. This set was acquired from the British Patent Office and bears their stamp throughout. A few volumes show early dampstaining, and thirty-six volumes have been newly-bound in quarter cloth with paper spine label and marbled paper over boards. The remaining seven volumes were bound in quarter cloth with marbled paper over boards at an earlier date. Founded in 1864, and edited by Ludwig Schrank as a periodical from practitioners for practitioners, with an emphasis on composition and the various genres of photography, including the practical aspects of photography as a fine art. By 1888, this publication "was the most renowned magazine in photographic sciences. Any invention or scientific progress in this magazine meant that it was a validated device or process. This was due in part because of its behind the scenes editor, Joseph Maria Eder, then the foremost source and teacher in photographic sciences to the degree that the quality of this paper's articles had a canonic character." Encyclopedia of Nineteenth Century Photography, p. 1095. Originally published as PHOTOGRAPHISCHE CORRESPONDENZ; in 1902 the title changed to PHOTOGRAPHISCHE KORRESPONDENZ. A long and continuous run, lacking volumes for the years 1906 and 1907.
