A MIDSUMMER-NIGHT'S DREAM, ILLUSTRATED AND SIGNED BY ARTHUR RACKHAM, IN PUBLISHER'S VELLUM-GILT

London and New York: William Heinemann and Doubleday, Page & Co., 1908. Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Large quarto (11 1/2 x 9 1/16 inches; 292 x 231 mm.). [6], 134, [1, blank], [1, printer's slug] pp. Original full vellum, titles and pictorial decoration to spine and image blocked in gilt to front board and top edge gilt, others untrimmed, silk yellow ribbon ties. Signed limited edition, number 82 of only 1000 copies, with 40 tipped in colour plates and numerous black and white illustrations throughout by Rackham and signed by him."Within twelve months appeared Shakespeare's A Midsummer-Night's Dream, De la Motte Fouqué's Undine, and the Grimm brothers' Fairy Tales, all very different in quality and feeling, as demanded by the texts, but all of extremely high quality. The Dream was, of course, an almost perfect setting for Rackham's devic imagination -- perhaps only bettered by the opportunity of The Tempest -- with the result that some of the fairies, elves and goblins he created for this play are among his finest colour images, and almost all the plates echo perfectly the mysterious interweaving of lightness and depth in this great work. Many of the formal plates are exquisite, whether they depict the principal events of the main theme of the story, such as the translated Bottom with his ass-head mocked by tree sprites, or the night-rule of Titania's haunted grove, those incidents within the subsidiary action, with details hardly dreamed of by Shakespeare, such as the gnomish knife-grinder in a motley group of fairies. Some of the floriated headings for the Dream are the finest of Rackham's line at the time, as for example the heading vignette for Act One, Scene One, which with typical Rackham irrelevance spreads its tendrils over the page, and into the text, ignoring the fact that the setting is supposed, according to Shakespeare, to be the Palace of Theseus, and throwing us immediately into a tangle-wood Rackhamerie, with mice, pixies and a sleeping maiden." (Fred Gettings. Arthur Rackham, pp. 117-123). Latimore and Haskell, p. 32. Gettings, p. 177. Riall, p. 87.<br style="">Some spotting and marks to boards, which are nevertheless uncommonly unbowed, internally some very minor spotting to tissue guards, but overall an excellent copy. With the illustrated ex-libris of H.C. Drayton (designed by Stanley Anderson) to inside front board.  A fine copy, quite scarce in such lovely condition.

By 1888, this publication "was the most renowned magazine in photographic sciences. Any invention or scientific progress in this magazine meant that it was a validated device or process. This was due in part because of its behind the scenes editor, Joseph Maria Eder, then the foremost source and teacher in photographic sciences to the degree that the quality of this paper's articles had a canonic character." Encyclopedia of Nineteenth Century Photography, p. 1095.Originally published as PHOTOGRAPHISCHE CORRESPONDENZ; in 1902 the title changed to PHOTOGRAPHISCHE KORRESPONDENZ.         [Photo Album]: Philadelphia and Portland Limited Express

Philadelphia. 1908. Oblong octavo. Measuring 5" x 7". Black cloth photo album with "Photographs" stamped in gilt on the front board. A collection of 21 sepia toned photographs measuring 3.5" x 5" with captions. The album is very good with a crack in the center gutter, containing about fine photos. Images of a boat trip on the Philadelphia and Portland Limited Express around 1908, collected and captioned by Lemuel Sponagle, who claims the journey made "one stop only". The photos capture the travelers as well as the captain and men working aboard the vessel at the wheel, in the rigging, and looking at the sea via binoculars "locating a light ship," all in beautiful photographs taken by Sponagle, presumably an enlightened amateur photographer. Included are two photos of a woman, one her sitting with her back to the camera wrapped in a heavy coat captioned, "lost in thought." Also included are photos of passing ships captioned, "touring up the Delaware," and "our assistant down the Delaware." A unique archive of photographs from the early 1900s displaying travel by boat in wonderful quality photographs. .

Rytírové, pano&#154;i a krásné pastýrky. Kniha pohádek [knights, pages and beautiful shepherdesses].

Olomouc: Nákladem r. Prombergra 1908 - Small octavo (15 × 15 cm). Original pictorial red cloth; 78, [1] pp. Decorative end-papers; thirteen full-page lithographs of stenciled color illustrations and numerous vignettes. A very good copy, printed on coated paper stock, possibly part of a preferential print run, signed and inscribed by the author in 1908; tiny hole to front free end paper and two bookplates (of the dedicatee and his widow) to front pastedown. Scarce book of fairy tales for children, illustrated by Minka Podhajská (1881&#150;1963), a student at the Wiener Werkstätte and later a prominent toy designer. along with Fanny Harlfinger-Zakucka, she belongs to a little-known generation of female students who, though they played a considerable role in the Vienna Secession, have been largely forgotten. Both studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule and published work in the leading journals of the movement, Ver Sacrum and die Fläche. Podhajská&#146;s illustrations show the influence of Adolf Böhm&#146;s course in stenciling: she creates dynamic, yet very delicate compositions by combining negative white space with small stenciled forms. Podhajská also designed toys for the Wiener Werkstätte. after relocating to Prague in 1919, she co-founded the Czech Female artists association in 1921 and in the following years organized exhibitions both in Prague and Paris. Aside from her work as an illustrator, she became known for her stylized wooden toy figures. &#147;rejecting the fin-de-siècle&#146;s oversaturated civilization, Minka Podhajska tapped two main sources for inspiration: children&#146;s drawings and traditional wooden peasant toys (particularly those produced in the Grödnertal in the southern Tyrol and in the Erzgebirge mountains between Saxony and Bohemia)&#148; (see Megan Brandow-Faller, &#147;&#145;An artist in Every Child &#150; A Child in Every Artist&#146;: Art for the Child at the Kunstschau 1908,&#148; 2013). An important, scarce example of Podhajská&#146;s work as an illustrator. KVK, OCLC show only the copies at Yale and Princeton. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

THE PHOTOGRAPHIC NEWS:; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE PROGRESS OF PHOTOGRAPHY

London: Piper & Carter, 1908. First editions. 4tos., variable paginations, occasional photographic illustrations and line drawings. 53 volumes, the complete publication: 24 volumes newly bound in cloth; 29 volumes bound in contemporary cloth. Each volume contains all 52 issues published that year. Several volumes have ownership signatures or stamps. Complete and very good. A complete run of this esteemed publication which commenced in 1858 as a weekly and ceased upon merging with the AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHER in May, 1908 to form THE AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHER AND PHOTOGRAPHIC NEWS. &#11;Edited by W. Crookes, et al. Among the contributors were; M. Guignet, Thomas Gulliver, C. Jabez Hughes, H. Hurst, Farindon Lane, Mathew Carey Lea, T.A. Malone, R. Mason, George Price, Henry Peach Robinson, A.W. Vogel, William Henry Fox Talbot, et al. &#11;&#11;In issue No.10, 12 November 1858, W. H. Fox Talbot presents to the world his first photoglyph, or photogravure. In order to facilitate the inclusion of a photoglyph in each issue, seven different plates and prints were produced, and only the top of each run, was used; this would allow the highest quality prints to be included in each issue. This was a clever marketing scheme, since it encouraged the readers to seek out different prints by buying several issues. &#11;&#11;The first 9 volumes bear the signature of J(ames) B(ooker) B(lake) Wellington, 1858 - 1939, an English scientist and photographer. He worked with George Eastman in New York before becoming a director at Kodak and later he set up his own photographic materials and publishing company, Wellington & Ward. He was a member of the Linked Ring Brotherhood. These volumes subsequently have the stamp on the front free endpaper of Ilford Limited, Rodenside Laboratory. A few volumes bear the stamp on the foredge and endpapers of the British Patent Office. A complete run of this publication is rare. WorldCat locates fewer than 15 complete runs.

        Ecce homo (Behold the Man)

Leipzig: Insel-Verlag, 1908. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Nietzsches Self-Congratulatory Masterpiece Explaining: Why I Am So WiseNIETZSCHE, Friedrich. Ecce homo (Behold the Man). Insel-Verlag, Leipzig, 1908. 1 leaf + TPs + 7-154 + [155] = Inhalt + [157] = Exemplar page, Square Quarto. First Edition. Schaberg 61a. $4,000 Released in an edition of 1,250 copies: 150 on Japanese velin and 1,100 on parchment. This copy is one of the premium copies on Japanese velin with gold (rather than brown) ink throughout and with the deluxe binding.Double-spread art nouveau title page illustrated by Henry Van de Velde. Van de Velde developed all his decorative elements from the logic of the curve and reverse curve and by covered surfaces and plain surfaces. This brings the text and the decorations into an ideally close connection with each other (Hofstatter, Art Nouveau, p. 100). Copies were so expensive that it was dubbed the "bank director's edition" (Schaberg, The Nietzsche Canon, p. 185). First edition of Nietzsche's apologia, written as a pre-emptive defense against his interpreters, though not published for almost twenty years after it was written, due to the machinations and the fears of his sister. "I have a terrible fear that one day I will be pronounced holy: you will guess why I publish this book before; it shall prevent people from doing mischief with me. I do not want to be a holy man; sooner even a buffoon. - Perhaps I am a buffoon." To his future followers, he offers the following: "You say you believe in Zarathustra? But what matters Zarathustra! You are my believers - but what matter all believers! You had not yet sought yourselves, and you found me. Thus do all believers; therefore all faith amounts to so little." CONDITION: Very good. Original grey suede boards with embossed circular title on the front cover gilt and again in gilt on the spine. The spine with some darkening to bottom. Light wear to boards.

Edited by W. Crookes, et al. Among the contributors were; M. Guignet, Thomas Gulliver, C. Jabez Hughes, H. Hurst, Farindon Lane, Mathew Carey Lea, T.A. Malone, R. Mason, George Price, Henry Peach Robinson, A.W. Vogel, William Henry Fox Talbot, et al. In issue No.10, 12 November 1858, W. The first 9 volumes bear the signature of J(ames) B(ooker) B(lake) Wellington, 1858 - 1939, an English scientist and photographer.

        Maufra, Peintre Et Graveur

Paris - Floury, 1908 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A review of the work of the early 20th century French painter, etcher, and lithographer. Maufra did not become a full time painter until 1890, having discovered the work of the Impressionists and under the encouragement of his friends. He was the first painter to take up residence in the Bateau-Lavoir, a famous residence for artists in Paris. His style often incorporated many of the techniques du jour, including impressionism and pointillism. He was primarily a painter of landscapes and marine scenes. This work is full of illustrations displaying his work, including many of his sketches. Condition: In the original pictorial card covers, and with the original tissue wrapper. Externally with a little general wear but remarkably sound for its age. The tissue wrapper is intact only at the rear, and is chipped with some moderate loss along the spine. The front part of the tissue wrap has become detached from the rear part, and is inserted between the front cover and front free endpaper. Internally, age-toned towards the edges and lightly spotted at the front and rear as usual. The binding is loosening in places, particularly between the half-title and page 2. Overall: VERY GOOD.

Buchausgabe angeboten. Reihe: Die Malerbücher (ohne Nummer). 12 Lithographien auf genarbten Werkdruckpapier. Im Stein rechts oder links monogrammiert: OK. Format: 28,7 x 24,5 cm. Die Übertragung des Textes auf den Stein: Emil Richard Weiß (Grafiker). Halbleinen Einband etwas lichtrandig, Hinterdeckel gering angeschmutzt, Rücken gut, Schnitt und Seiten leicht lichtrandig, sauber. Keine Beschädigungen, keine Knicke etc, (sehr) guter Zustand.
