Phillips was Secretary of the Pennsylvania State Educational Commission. BTW is responding to a letter which apparently asked for his views on the matter of separate race schools in Pennsylvania.         [Photo Album]: Philadelphia and Portland Limited Express

Philadelphia. 1908. Oblong octavo. Measuring 5" x 7". Black cloth photo album with "Photographs" stamped in gilt on the front board. A collection of 21 sepia toned photographs measuring 3.5" x 5" with captions. The album is very good with a crack in the center gutter, containing about fine photos. Images of a boat trip on the Philadelphia and Portland Limited Express around 1908, collected and captioned by Lemuel Sponagle, who claims the journey made "one stop only". The photos capture the travelers as well as the captain and men working aboard the vessel at the wheel, in the rigging, and looking at the sea via binoculars "locating a light ship," all in beautiful photographs taken by Sponagle, presumably an enlightened amateur photographer. Included are two photos of a woman, one her sitting with her back to the camera wrapped in a heavy coat captioned, "lost in thought." Also included are photos of passing ships captioned, "touring up the Delaware," and "our assistant down the Delaware." A unique archive of photographs from the early 1900s displaying travel by boat in wonderful quality photographs. .

        Renault 1908

Paris: M.M., 1908. Hand-coloured pochoir print. Very good condition apart from some minor foxing in the margins and a 1" tear in the lower margin. This is the Coal-Shovel nosed Renault, which was very popular and successful in 1906 and 1907. In 1908, the car was less formidable, but could reach speeds of 100 miles per hour. Hungarian Francois Szisz drove his last race for Renault in 1908, in this beautiful car.`The Gamy-Montaut prints document various historical events in the early history of transportation, including Power Boat Racing, Motorcycle and Motor Car Racing, Motor Car Touring, Zeppelins and Tennis.Having observed the rapidly growing interest in cars and racing during the early years of motor cars, Ernest Montaut produced his first motoring prints in the mid-1890s, and by 1897, his drawings were pictorial records of the many races in France. Montaut's work was extremely well received in the Paris of his day and was shown in the fashionable shops of the Rue de l'Opera and Rue de la Paix, as well as in the better galleries.Marguerite Montaut, Ernest's wife, joined him in his work producing not only racing prints but also developing a fine series of aviation prints commemorating such events as the first flights on the early European mail routes. While Marguerite Montaut's works were occasionally signed "M. Montaut", she also used the name "Gamy", an anagram for Magy. The Gamy-Montaut prints were all produced by the pochoir process in which the outlines for each image were drawn onto lithographic stones and printed. Using these uncoloured prints as a template, elaborate stencils were cut for each colour. Water-colour was then brushed onto the image through the stencil. The colouring process was quite complex, with each print taking several days to produce. It was also quite labour intensive, and the studio of Gamy-Montaut therefore employed a group of trained artists, including Nevil and Campion, to assist in the colouring.

Vertical crack to spine skilfully repaired, minor loss to lower wrapper along joint restored; an excellent copy.         The Fifth Queen Crowned.

London: Eveleigh Nash,, 1908. A Romance. Octavo. Original red cloth, titles and decoration to front board and spine gilt. Endleaves rather tanned, boards a little marked, spine faded and rubbed. A very good copy. First edition, first impression. With his signed presentation inscription on the front free endpaper to his first wife, "Elsie Hueffer affecly [sic] from Ford M. H. 26th March MCMVIII". Elsie's importance in Hueffer's development as a writer is easy to understate. However his progression from the middle ranking early efforts to the masterful and enduring work of genius that is The Good Soldier owes more than a little to her support. The third of Hueffer's Elizabethan novels.

Shakespeare's Comedy of the Tempest [WITH ITS ORIGINAL DUST-JACKET]

Hodder and Stoughton, London 1908 - Large quarto (11 1/4 x 9"). XXIV, 143, [1]pp. Original illustrated dust-jacket over gilt-stamped blue cloth, with gold lettering to spine and front cover. Illustrated half-title. Tissue-guarded tipped-in frontispiece. Red- and black-lettered title page within decorative frame. This splendid illustrated edition of William Shakespeare's "The Tempest" is magnificently illustrated throughout with 40 tissue-guarded tipped-in color plates by renown French-born artist Edmund (Edmond) Dulac (1882-1953). Dulac's style shows some obvious influence of Arthur Rackham, "an influence that eventually traveled both ways, as the two artists were probably influenced by Swedish illustrator John Bauer. However, unlike Rackham, who was making a transition from the old color process , in which a black ink line was needed to "hold" the color and hide the effects of misregistration of the color plates, Dulac started with the new, more accurate process which allowed him to work without the ink lines, which he did for many of his early works, working largely in watercolor and gouache. He eventually came to use outlines more as a nod to the expectations of the market than a technical limitation." (For more information, see: Charley Parker's "Lines and Colors: Notes and Comments on visual Art").Sporadic tiny chipping and creaseing along edges of dust-jacket. Binding slightly rubbed along edges. Paper edges foxed. Some foxing and offsetting to very first and very last leaves. Dust-jacket and binding in overall good+ to very good, interior in good to very good condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
